I am just not feeling it today, ladies and gentlemen.
Understandable. Even if you’ve never served, Memorial Day is a bit like Yom Kippur, in that it’s not really the sort of holiday to which you should attach a “happy” greeting. It’s particularly somber in light of the face that every life lost in American military conflicts for the last 3/4 of a century was an utter and complete fucking waste.

All good, Swiss. It’s revealing that WWII is the last war people can ‘feel proud’ of. Also predictable, is how the ‘endless wars + their unpopularity’ is a big reason for such.
Dad was born in ’49 and was on the threshold for conscription, but he was able to skirt by in the Reserves. He hates that war, but is embarrassed when people think he was *in* the army. He makes a point to let them know he didn’t go.
(If he had, I’d never have been born.) His stories from Basic in Ft. Leonardwood are fun. He got pulled from dumptrucking cuz he held the bed up while reversing and ripped open a significant part of the loading bay. He was taken off dump truck duty.
Also fun, he describes the Drill Instructors as being as nasty in any flick. But! When he was with you in the bunker to hand-toss grenades, he became the most sincerely nice person in the state. ‘Asked us about our families!’ Afterward, Cunt Switch re-activated.

I swear to God, if I were king for a day I would have the following “suggestion” for every Christian who wants to post a bible verse on social media to support their politics:
1. You must memorize Bastiat’s quote about socialists & the state
2. You must re-read Bastiat’s quote immediately before you post
3. Once you post, you must explain how your quote complies with Bastiat’s view
I don’t f**king care if it’s about “family values” or “caring for the least of these.” The kingdom of God does not demand that you use the blunt power of the state to get your way in public policy.

on May 26, 2025 at 4:17 pm
Agree Pat. But, since it’s neither required nor precluded then suggesting that ending a specific government program amounts to “not supporting family values” or “not caring for the poor” is un-Christian is a misapplication of scripture.
Or to put it another way, arguing that the state MUST do X because the bible requires that Christians do X is poor interpretation. It suggests that the person who opposes the given state action is acting in a way contrary to the faith. And I find that unacceptable (in the same way that, when I was ambivalent on abortion, I rejected the argument that a Christian must be aggressively pro-life).
Making a case that the state MAY do X is perfectly fine and can be debated by people with good intentions on either side without questioning their faith.
Hearing one group of Christians suggest that Christians who voted for Trump or Harris need to “explain” themselves, as Christians, is offensive and stupid.
Pat
on May 26, 2025 at 4:47 pm
More or less true, I’d say, although there’s definitely black and white areas where supporting a particular ideology or even candidate could reasonably call your morals into question. But the appropriate remedy is outlined in Matthew 18. Then again, Paul wasn’t too shy about throwing people out of the fold for their indiscretions (such as 1 Corinthians 5 or 1 Timothy 1:20). I’d like to think he might have picked a better venue that Facebook for church discipline though.
Seems sketchy, OTOH, why was this a federal case and not handled at the state level?

This article never even once tried to present the argument for this guy’s innocence. There’s no second side to this story. They outline the accusations against him and just leave you wondering what evidence had to exonerate himself that he wasn’t allowed to present.
So hell if I know if this guy deserved it, but you guys have already noted the red flags.
In an interview with the Dwarkesh Podcast earlier this month, Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out some bleak-sounding plans for the future of human interactions. He explained that while the average American has ‘three people that they would consider friends… the average person has demand for meaningfully more, I think it’s, like, 15 friends’. Zuck’s solution to this? Artificial intelligence.
Zuckerberg concedes that AI ‘probably’ won’t be able to replace real-life connections with other human beings. But it could, he thinks, help us feel less alone, should AI be the only option available. He points out that plenty of people are already using large-language models (LLM) to mimic romantic relationships or act as virtual therapists.

The definition of “friend” is a key element here. Some people have huge rosters of people they barely know that they call friends. They might work at the same place, see each other maybe twice a year, or circle jerk each other on social media, etc. I wouldn’t call people I’m vaguely aware of online or at work “friends,” myself. In terms of tight friendships, I’ve got maybe 2-3 at any given time, and don’t really want more. Definitely gets exhausting.

Indeed, that is a title I do not give out lightly. It implies something more than just “someone I can hang out with”. I can hang out with a whole bunch of people who I don’t know well enough to merit such a lofty title.
But then again, Zuckerberg doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who is really capable of human interaction. His software hasn’t reached the level of sophistication required.

INDYCAR announced post-race technical inspection penalties for the entries of No. 27 and 28 of Andretti Global and No. 90 of PREMA Racing following Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.
Under the new finishing order, Andretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood are 31st and 32nd, respectively. PREMA Racing’s Callum Ilott is 33rd.
AJ Foyt Racing’s David Malukas is second to Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou with Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward is third.
During post-race inspection of car Nos. 27 and 28, INDYCAR discovered modifications to the Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) covers and cover-to-A-arm mounting points with unapproved spacers and parts. According to the INDYCAR rulebook, EMS covers must be used as supplied. Additionally, these modifications provided the capability of enhanced aerodynamic efficiency to both cars.

During INDYCAR’s routine inspection of the front wing assembly of PREMA Racing entry No. 90, the car failed to meet the minimum endplate height and location specification.
