How can you still talk about guns after the awful Graz shooting ? You Americans popularized school shooting and bear all the blame.

Yeah, if I want to get into CO I’ll need to buy a second gun+optic. I’d rather not drop the $2k to do that.

I just bought myself a huge 16oz. OC fogger from Fox Labs, to keep in the car.

Contemplating a 9mm PDW of some kind, but there are storage and deployment considerations that make this kind of thing difficult. Also, I don’t really want a Flux Raider because of the drop safety concerns…

Thanks New Jerseyans. 1/3 of you Dems decided to select Mikie (in a six way primary race) to run (and presumably win) as Governor in November. Now I have to watch another five months of her ads about how she going to kick Trump’s and Musk’s asses, while passing out unicorns and rainbows to everyone while cutting taxes, protecting social security, and being an all round progressive pinko. She’s in office only because she “drove out” a RINO congressman in 2018. Sometimes – at least here on the East Coast – we have to suffer a RINO in order to prevent something even worse.

    • Sensei

Tolerating RINOs is how NJ became the solid blue state that it now is.

      • R C Dean

Pretty much where I am, Sensei. RINOs demoralize the non-lefty constituencies and pave the way for lefties to take power.

Frankly, if a Republican majority isn’t going to do anything I want, I see no reason to vote for them. Now, that doesn’t rule out voting against leftists, but I’m close to done with the whole uniparty kayfabe.

    • KSuellington

I’ve never been to NJ, but in my mind it is shitty California politics with shittier weather and more proximity to NYC.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Basically NYC without the cultural cache and it smells worse.

      • Sensei

I live there and that’s what I’ve always described as being. It thinks it is CA, but without the beautiful scenery and weather.

The coast is beautiful and I grew up there, but the season only lasts from June to September and mid summer is hot. There are mountains and woods in the northwest, but not nearly in size or scale of CA or other places in the US.

      • Sean

One day soon, with global warming, NJ will be under water.

      • Chafed

        That’s a good summary.

Those who govern us are characterised above all by their intellectual thinness.

The speech was at its heart about ‘progressive realism’, a daft idea that Labour’s head honchos have got into their heads by way of something they call ‘foreign policy’. The essence of the concept is, more or less, cakeism. It involves aligning a hard-nosed focus on the national interest with progressive goals, the idea being that Britain can somehow (try not to laugh) lead the world to a better future by demonstrating that all of the ‘current things’ Establishment figures believe in (Net Zero, open borders, AI running the show, etc.) are not just achievable outcomes but are actually better than any other alternative. The UK will become a progressive utopia and will demonstrate to other countries how wonderful life could be if they became progressive utopias too. And this will achieve the UK’s interests, because we are interested in sunshine, rainbows and lollipops, and a world in which every country is a progressive utopia will be one of sunshine, rainbows and lollipops in abundance.

But in any case the Cabinet seems to have committed themselves to it, and Lord Hermer’s speech was about the legal aspects of the concept. In short:

British leadership to strengthen and reform the international rules-based system is both the right thing to do and the only truly realistic choice.

Progressive realism, you see: Britain will become the best-in-class at abiding by the strictures of international law. And in so doing it will ‘lead’ other countries into doing the same thing, and thereby make the world a better and safer place. Aligning progressive ideals with the national interest, you see – sounds great, doesn’t it? Get Vladimir Putin on the blower.

The snag is that there are some annoying people getting in the way of the realisation of this ambition – knuckle-dragging recalcitrants who don’t believe in the ‘international rules-based system’

    https://newsfromuncibal.substack.com/p/literal-nazi

    • rhywun

knuckle-dragging recalcitrants who don’t believe in the ‘international rules-based system’

Like Russia, China, probably India, most of Africa, most of Asia… so about 3/4 of the world’s population.

On the global warming front (again I blame you fuckers) Bucharest had one o dem one every 100 years rainstorms (last one was in 2019) and I can say damn… that was some rain…

    • Not Adahn

It has rained every weekend here (save one) since November. This Saturday it’s scheduled to rain again.

      • rhywun

I can’t believe it’s not raining now. Seems like we’ve been under a “flood watch” for weeks.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

        Damn Globo Warning.

  11. PieInTheSky

On the global hipster nonsense front (and here I absolutely blame America you spread this shit), we had a gay pride parade here in Bucharest. The talent (aka the cis-tits on display) was weak, but there were plenty of Palestinian flags cause off course there were.

    • UnCivilServant

I thought we killed USAID funding for that garbage.

      • PieInTheSky

well the rot has started. It will find a way.

    • rhywun

“Pride parades” have been infested with leftism for a couple decades here. Therefore it is another required stop on the Democrat circuit.

The big college down the road had selected a new president. He came from a flagship State U. up north, had the right credentials, and was the unanimous choice of the search committee and the university’s Board of Trustees. All that was needed was the rubber-stamp approval of the state college Board of Governors.

Then people took a deeper look at the guy.

Gators aren’t known for being particularly agile, but they managed to dodge a bullet here.

    • Sensei

Better still it appears he didn’t give enough notice to his prior institution of higher “learning” to be guaranteed a return to a tenured full professorship.

The Gator board was all in however.

    • trshmnstr

Ono, that was almost quite unfortunate.

What is the line? Don’t break the law asshole?

I mean, you’re here illegally. Watch your P’s and Q’s. It’s not complicated shit. They probably could have afforded the shit they’re buying if they’re anything like the illegals who steal down here.

      • Chafed

This is the dividing line on illegal immigrants. Behave lawfully while you are here and I’m glad to look the other way. Steal some stuff and you can go back where you came from.

      • Pope Jimbo

The fire and brimstone speech they gave Mrs. Holiness and I about keeping our noses clean while her application for a green card was being processed was pretty impressive.

And we were married and going through the process legally.

If Mrs. Holiness (or even I) had been convicted of shop lifting while that application was being processed, I doubt she would have been given her green card.

      • Pope Jimbo

        Chafed:

I’d add, “Don’t get on the govt dole” as well as “Don’t commit crimes” to the conditions where I’d look the other way.

      • trshmnstr

I’m over it. I don’t care if you keep your nose clean. If you’re here illegally, do the right thing and go home.

If you’re not a blight on our society, we won’t punish you when we find you, but you will be deported in accordance with your immigration status. If you’ve been up to no good, you will be charges with immigration crimes, serve your punishment, and then be deported.

        At the very least, I-84.

Albany TV news basically covers almost nothing south of the 518, although we’re also largely ignored by the NYC TV stations. Most of the cable systems in Ulster County had the NYC channels but not necessarily the Albany channels.

      • UnCivilServant

So, we’re all talking the same general area.

I know opinion varies, I’ve changed my mind on where to draw the line a time or two.

When I was in college, there was an Upstate NY Usenet group. It was founded by people from Western NY who didn’t fit in on the Great Lakes group, but considered themselves not Upstaters. Western NY is a thing.

The men forced women to get on those lifeboats because they assumed they were too weak and delicate to handle treading water in the freezing Atlantic waters for a few hours, so really, it’s yet another instance of men oppressing women.

AerCap can recover over $1 bln, UK court rules in case over jets ‘lost’ in Russia

That meant the lessors could recover from their “war risks insurers”, rather than under a broader all risks clause, as the cause of the loss was “an act or order of the Russian government”, Butcher said.

In the previous thread someone was asking about wraps for a car. I had the roof wrapped on my car over 5 years ago and it still looks great. My car was struck by a UFO while driving to work one day. The object struck about two inches back from where the windshield meets the roof line and left a gouge about 3 inches long and 1/4 wide down to bare metal. It soon began to rust. I attempted to fix it with touch up paint where I was successfull in making it look 10x worse. I blame the white platinum tri-coat metal flake paint which is damn near impossible to match with a touch-up paint kit. I took the car to 3 different body shops for estimates, the cheapest which was $1400. They all told me that the entire roof would need to be repainted. Screw that. This led me to a place that does auto wraps and I was quoted a price of $285 to have the roof wrapped in 3M gloss black vinyl. The car looks better with the wrap.

    • Sean

      Thanks.

    • ron73440

I imagine they treated the rust so it’s not eating the metal behind the wrap?

I almost went with a wrap when I got my truck repainted, but I didn’t want to have to redo it every few years.

    • R.J.

He ran the MN GOP out of business. I’m glad he’s not doing well for the national Dems.

  18. Pope Jimbo

Now Trump has done it. He’s forced the Boy Mayor of Minneapolis to take responsibility for police reform himself!

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says the city intends to honor the consent decree addressing police reform that was proposed after George Floyd’s 2020 murder, despite its recent dismissal by the federal government.

Frey signed an executive order Tuesday, saying the city is “committed to police reform, even if the Trump administration is not.”

After the Floyd Fiasco, the Biden DOJ came in and found systemic racism all through the cop shops in Mpls. They came up with a consent decree and tried to force it through the courts during the last days of Biden’s administration. It failed to get judicial approval though.

It is interesting that the City of Minnepolis which has been run by uber proggies for decades needs the Feds to “force” them to do more progressive stuff. You’d think that they would be able to reform the cops any which way they wanted.

    • Chafed

It’s only important to reform your police force if it angers Trump. Otherwise, it’s fine to let the shit show continue.

    • Ted S.

To be fair, Mayor Frey does need to move on.

      • Pope Jimbo

If Frey was a normal man, he would have gone full MAGA and started taking scalps after being forced to do a walk of shame by protesters after he said Defund the Police was stupid.

Also, if Frey were an adult he would have worn adult clothes when speaking to the crowd.

    • Rat on a train

Consent decrees can bypass democratic processes. They get what they want but can shift blame.

    • R C Dean

Well, good, then. Sounds like there’s no reason for the feds to be involved, then.

  21. Mojeaux

All right, well. I was forced to upgrade my Win10 to the latest version, which I haven’t done in years because Windows breaks my shit. However, *I* broke my shit and thus, I was hoisted on my own petard. (Yes, yes, the evidence I was hoisted on a petard is out there driving and working and earning money and being young adults.)

Right now I’m scheduling backups for Macrium and setting restore points, which I also failed to do. I would be living in my little enclosed garden if I hadn’t decided to delete all the non-Roman fonts FROM THE REGISTRY. Look, I have never had a registry accident before. What could a few missing fonts possibly do??? A lot. The answer is, a lot.

I’m probably going to have to figure out how to turn off Windows nagging me to upgrade to 11. *sigh*

    • Pope Jimbo

I feel your pain. A year or so ago, something was updated on my Win10 box and now anytime it boots (or comes out of deep sleep) it hangs with an error about not being able to find a TPM device. No shit, my laptop is old and doesn’t have a TPM chip.

I’ve been living with it because it is a dual boot machine and I normally boot into linux which isn’t constantly rebooting. Now that I’m retired and have extra time, I was foolish enough to contact Dell support for help in figuring out what is going on.

Ugh. I got lectured by a guy who used works like “descripted” (meant encrypted) and “reeving” (receiving I think) because I wouldn’t encrypt my entire hard drive with bitlocker (it is already installed!!! narrator: not on old Dells).

I too am thinking of doing a factory restore to see if that brings back my laptop.

The last PC laptop I liked was the Sony Vaio. Last apple laptop was the 17″ macbook pro.

      • Pope Jimbo

I also have a tablet with a bad factory image on it, so when I did a factory restore on it, I basically bricked it. I’m going to have to find a way to side load a new image on it.

I hate having too much time on my hands. Too many bullshit things like this that I used to be able to ignore.

      • UnCivilServant

Something I learned recently – it is apparently possible to use the port the TPM chip connects to to access a fully functional ISA bus.

“No rice??? In Japan???” she then questioned, referring to the country’s ongoing shortage of the grain, itself caused by a triple-combo of inflation, poor crop performances, and increased demand due to the recent surge of tourists. “Meanwhile, Japanese students are getting scholarships—which they have to pay back. To put it bluntly, that’s debt.”

My in-laws had a lot of fun blaming me for eating too much rice. Despite the fact that I barely ate any. I don’t hate rice, but I also don’t love it like they do. I had a niece who loved just eating plain white rice and that is it. To her, it was the best thing in the world.

      • UnCivilServant

Your niece is sick and needs help.

      • Akira

I’m ethnically half Japanese, and I actually like brown rice better. What I’ve picked up on is that I’m maybe one of twelve people on Earth who feel this way, and everyone else can barely choke the stuff down. My Dad attempted to eat brown rice on the advice of his doctor to get more fiber and whole grains, but the best he could ever do was mixing some brown rice into his white rice.

      • Nephilium

        Akira:

I’m full round eyes, but I prefer brown rice to white (and enjoy wild rice as well). I’m also apparently one of the few guys in the world who likes sweet potatoes as well.

I’m also apparently one of the few guys in the world who likes sweet potatoes as well.

      • Pope Jimbo

        Akira,

Mrs. Holiness will switch over to brown rice on her occasional health kicks. I don’t hate it.

I am just much more of a bread guy. My Japanese family was appalled by my desire for just bread and cheese. Not some crappy cheese sandwich, but good cheese with hunks of good bread.

Guess what you can’t find in Japan? Good cheese and good bread. (OK, you can find it if you really, really look).

      • Akira

Oh sweet potatoes are da bomb. I never personally cared for the whole “marshmallows and brown sugar” treatment that they usually get, but I put them in a lot of stews and occasionally eat one baked. Good stuff.

There are all kinds of methods that YouTube food scientists do to make actual crispy sweet potato fries (since they don’t lend themselves to getting crispy) but I haven’t gotten around to trying them yet.
