The Hat and The Hair Animated: Rerun ep 64

by | Jul 16, 2025 | Hat and Hair | 83 comments

This is an episode that exemplifies my writing style. I don’t write the stories, the characters do. Sure I might have an idea of what I want to make, but once I sit down and start writing the characters just start talking. As far as I can remember I sat down to write an episode about Donald’s stupid kayfabe rivalry with DeSantis. Then the Hair starts talking about his past and the Hat cuts him off because he doesn’t give a shit. Perfect character moment brought about by the character and not the writer.

Well, I identify as someone who grew up in the declivity!

I identify as someone who grew up in poverty. Son of a single mother, two hungry mouths to feed, deadbeat dad. Kraft blue box Mac and cheese was $0.25 per box. Off brand was even less. We bought off-brand and gussied it up. My mom worked a full time job as an accountant at a failing YMCA, a second job at JCPenny, and a third job as accountant for a YMCA Camp.

That has dominated my spending habits. I hate debt. I want quality things , I’m not willing to pay for cheap shit, and I am willing to pay for quality. I am not willing to go into debt for unserious things.

      • rhywun

        Muh brother from another muther.

Except mine had four hungry mouths to feed. But I also have zero debt.

      • Suthenboy

        Good morning all.

Zero debt here as well. What you are describing Nick is called ‘wisdom’.

      • Grosspatzer

Huh. Raised by single mom and abuela until mom remarried when I was 9. Also debt free, it helps that my kids were smart enough to earn academic scholarships.

That bit about railing Hope Hicks was projection, wasn’t it?

“Perfect character moment brought about by the character and not the writer”

I hear this from you writer people a lot and I gotta call BS, You are your characters, all of them, if they sat sommat it’s because you thought they should say sommat. There is no magic, Jiminy Cricket does not exist.

    • CPRM

There is proof the Hat and Hair exist in Glibs Gulch, ask OMWC.

    • (((Jarflax

People’s minds have a lot going on under the level of conscious awareness. Things bubble up that can sometimes come as surprises. So, yes, you the writer ‘are’ all your characters, but no, that doesn’t mean they can’t surprise you.

I meant to post this the next time UCS makes some flippant remark about slaughtering foreigners. Perhaps it will quench his blood lust.

The above is also relevant to the war in Gaza.

    • Derpetologist

I’ll add that I don’t mean this as a personal attack. It’s just that I’ve gotten tired of hearing soft, spoiled, weak Americans fantasize out loud about Republican Space Rangers effortlessly annihilating dastardly “moose limbs” with their sonic electronic ball breakers.

Derp, you made a statement that Hamas will ultimately defeat Israel, and I’m just curious how you define defeat for Israel and how you think that will be achieved. Realistically at any point in the foreseeable future.

      • R C Dean

        I have the same question(s).

      • Derpetologist

Hamas wins if Israel stops attacking them, and at some point, they will. Permanently.

The IRA didn’t need to conquer the UK to win.

The Arabic text at the end of this Hamas airborne assault propaganda video says (paraphrasing):

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Gaza/Palestine is not Northern Ireland, which was your direct comparison, if I remember correctly.

Had Israel kept the settlers there for a few centuries, you might be able to make a case for it, but with the pullout several decades ago now, that thread is no longer viable. NI has had British “settlers” there for long enough to be quite rightly considered natives and have, at the same time, strong connections to the motherland. It is that long term connection that differs from Gaza, were the settlers never made such a solid connection. And that connection is what makes the NI issue so thorny.

I cannot say who will defeat whom, as this is such a singular situation. The best analogy would probably be India/Bangladesh, but after just as long a period as Gaza and related issues has settled down. Most likely, the Palestinians will always be a thorn in the side, as they have no way of actually defeating Israel, and I doubt Israel will commit actual genocide, with would be the only way to solve this problem.

      • Derpetologist

The Israelis won’t genocide Palestinians because they’d be genocided 5 minutes later.

So the war in Gaza is not genocide, terrible as it is. More like the siege of Vicksburg.

However awful anyone thinks the Israelis are, they are allowing food and medicine to enter Gaza.

It’s part of their plan to build the world’s most moral concentration camp:

Former Israel PM says planned ‘humanitarian city’ in Gaza would be a ‘concentration camp’

PragerU: IDF is the world’s most moral military
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN1MkAGuVyY

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Calling Gaza a concentration camp is, to put it lightly, silly. Gaza has two other borders, both of which have been closed by those countries, not Israel. If anything, Gaza is a autonomous zone, and will most likely remain so. And unless the Palestinians get serious about their actual future, and not the mythical future, it will stay that way.

Several times, most recently the Oslo accords, Israel has tried to jettison the area, but the PA refuses to go that way, as then they have to live up to that actual future. In NI, GB hasn’t left, has no plans to leave, and never will. Israel is the same.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Israel pulled out of, and removed all settlements in, Gaza in 2005: https://www.britannica.com/event/Israels-disengagement-from-Gaza

By the way, what happened in ’67? Oh, yeah, the Six Days War. That was the third of the Arab-Israeli wars, and one in which, again, Israel took land from the counties who attempted the destruction of it as a state. They did install settlements in 1970, but, again, dismantled them in ’05.

Whoever put together that bit of stupidity you are flashing is simply a propagandist. Interesting that you fell for it.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

You can believe whatever you would like, but an AP video does not show a home being torn down in a war zone becoming a new settlement, nor does a propaganda video, no matter what it says.

Seriously, Derpy, critical thinking, how does it work?

      • Brochettaward

You’re both rather propagandized if you ask me. Zwak is ridiculously pro-Israeli and thinking that Hamas is going to ultimately win anything against Israel is ridiculous to me.Even if we are just defining it as the loss of no more land, that’s not Hamas’s goal now is it?

      • Derpetologist

IDF: she was killed in a boating accident; yeah, that’s the ticket!

        ***
Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) was an American nonviolence activist and diarist.[1][2] She was a member of the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement (ISM)[3] and was active throughout the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. In 2003, she was in Rafah, a city in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli military was demolishing Palestinian houses at the height of the Second Intifada. While protesting the demolitions as they were being carried out, she was killed by an Israeli armored bulldozer that crushed her.

The Israelis won’t genocide Palestinians because they’d be genocided 5 minutes later.

By whom? Iran is a wreck militarily, and they were the biggest threat.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

The Israelis wouldn’t be genocided by anyone but they would lose all support, maybe not in the short term but in the long term, which would cause them to slowly fail. They’ve shown a surprising amount of effectiveness but without the US propping them up they’re not in a great position.

    • R.J.

Sorry. Sleep is for the weak and I am weak tonight.

I think it says something about the bias of “public” broadcasters that the top story that ORF (Austria) is running with is the death of a stage theater director.

    • Ted S.

I mean, as I type this the guy isn’t listed on Wikipedia’s obituary page (granted it’s not the English-speaking world) but the GovSec class really has a bias about what they think everyone is supposed to care about.

Kinda like the US media going on about the Met Gala.

Mornin’, GT. We dodged a bullet Tuesday – serious flooding 5 miles north of here and 20 miles south. Just a bit of rain here, also it looks like the local DPW cleaned up the debris in the brook that runs through the woods behind my property. Out for a walk yesterday, brook was bone dry.
