Tuesday morning Links of substitution

I have no idea what Sloopjos is doing this week. Something about Messican ass weed. And lawyers.

Links?

WTF?

I’ll wait for the Pornhub channel.

Erm…

So this happened. Oddly enough, Hamas is the only party not already on board.

My intense dislike for this choice has nothing to do with Trump.

I haven’t been following this story, but this seems significant.

This head fake is aimed at Puty-Put. At least, let’s hope it’s a head fake.

Oh yeah, he hated Mormons.

*A request for content*

It’s beggin’ time again. We can, and will always need content from you good folks. We have some serial content, but would love to have many more individual contributions. Thank you in advance.

Okay, that’s it for me. Have a great day. Peace out, Glibbies.

Something about Messican ass weed. And lawyers.

Their last communication was “Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money”.

    • SDF-7

I thought that was what they were going to name their next three kids…

  2. AlexinCT

    Erm…

Why is it that tolerance involves supporting deviance and stupid shit, every fucking single time?

    • WTF

Well, the nobility have been marrying cousins for centuries.

      • juris imprudent

As if no one ever noticed.

      • (((Jarflax

Hence the prevalence of Kings nicknamed the Mad, and the eventual collapse of monarchy generally.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Yep and eventually you end up with this guy:
        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_II_of_Spain

The occasional 1st cousin marriage isn’t that genetically risky but children of cousins who are the progeny of cousins and etc up the family tree are at great risk.

      • The Last American Hero

You want dragons and white walkers? Because this is how you get dragons and white walkers.

      • UnCivilServant

I don’t want a lame setting. Bring me a better setting.

    • Necron 99

Tolerance only applies to specific people in the victim stack. Now hillbillies… they are just backward cousin-fuckers, lowest of the low, beneath contempt. You know, white.

  3. Not Adahn

NPR’s carefully curated expert said that since all the Arabs an also all the majority Muslim nations were on board, that Hamas would HAVE to agree to the plan. Although I don’t think it actually had all the majority Muslim nations.

    • Nephilium

Did the UK approve of it?

      • rhywun

Or France or Canada or the other 100-odd countries that are officially Hamas supporters now.

      • Tonio

        [golf clap]

    • SDF-7

Since it reads to me as “Hamas needs to pinky-swear to stop being terrorists and gets amnesty”, I expect them to be on board long enough to re-arm.

      • WTF

Bingo. Anything that does not result in the total destruction of Hamas is a defeat for Israel, and a defeat for civilization.

      • Threedoor

        Replace Hamas with Islam WTF.

It’s going to be interesting to say the least to watch a caliphate take over Europe in my lifetime.

      • WTF

        Replace Hamas with Islam WTF.

*Looks at France, UK, Michigan, Minnesota, NYC*

        I stand corrected.

  4. Not Adahn

This head fake is aimed at Puty-Put. At least, let’s hope it’s a head fake.

If you can tell it’s a head fake, it’s not an effective head fake

    /madman theory

    • Muzzled Woodchipper

I’m just here wondering why the article goes through the scary scenarios, when towards the end it’s mentioned that there is a large, long running, planned, biannual NATO exercise happening in the North Sea.

Maybe lead with the most likely scenario? But I guess it’s more important to uphold the narrative of some trigger happy Trump eager for world domination.

      • juris imprudent

        Trump eager for world domination

And their real problem is – he isn’t the right Top.Man for that!

      • Tonio

Fear-mongering and pant-soiling hysteria is all they’ve got. Why you hate Fleet Street tabloids, Chip?

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

The nonfearmongering whole story doesn’t get clicks bud.

      • The Other Kevin

It reminds me of earlier this year when the USS Nimitz was spotted “operating” near Mexico. (Taking out the cartels!) Turns out that was their pre-deployment training, which they always do in that area, and about 5 minutes on Google would have told you that.

  5. AlexinCT

So this happened. Oddly enough, Hamas is the only party not already on board.

Why would Hamas be on board with anything that doesn’t involve brutally murdering Jews?

    • SDF-7

Because diplomacy is the art of saying “Nice doggie” while looking for a rock. We just don’t realize we and Israel are the doggies in this bit of diplomacy.

  6. Not Adahn

I too had a hottie reject me because the LDS church told her too. And yet, I’ve never murdered a Mormon nor torched a temple.

    • Threedoor

She sensed the Morman Siren tactic wouldn’t work on you.

    • Nephilium

There was a girl for which there was mutual interest. Unfortunately, she decided to return to the JWs and go full evangelical style. I was also friends with her older sister (who I found out later was interested in me as well) who was a great singer and enjoyed doing karaoke. The evangelical JW sister would (about once a month) decide to show up and yell at all of us fornicators and drinkers. Last I chatted with the sane sister, they were still estranged (leaving the JW makes you a “backslider”, and you are to be shunned by the faithful).

      • Threedoor

The shunning there is brutal. I worked with a guy that was part of their cult and they excommunicated one of their brothers or sisters (I don’t remember which) from the family.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I pulled a shack job with the daughter of an 7DA pastor for a couple years.

But the only time I was rejected by a religious hottie was a Catholic girl, and it was post-night of temptation. And she was only concerned that I was divorced.

    • SDF-7

(snark) You weren’t wearing your extra special underwear!

(non-snark) I would bet on serious mental illness for this loser with the LDS folks just the fixation that came up in his Magic Hate Ball shaking.

  7. Threedoor

First cousin marriages increase birth defects about 5%. Not a huge increase. Until you do it for every generation, then you end up with Pakistan.

    • juris imprudent

Well the English class system was always on par with India’s, so why not adopt the marriage style of Pakistan?

  8. Nephilium

When was the last time there was someone good for the half time show? I think the last one that was a band I had seen was Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

    • UnCivilServant

There’s a name I have not heard in a long time.

      • Nephilium

I just saw them at a Templelive venue last fall. They routinely play around here for a Christmas show as well.

      • UnCivilServant

The only actual exposure I had to them was when they were a musical guest on Letterman – if that gives you any idea of how long ago it was.

I wasn’t much impressed by their piece, and didn’t seek out more.

      • Nephilium

        UCS:

I’ve seen them at least a half dozen times, first time being an oversold show at a dive venue here (Grog Shop, OG, not new location). I’ve met the band several times, had the lead singer ogle my date’s cleavage (it was spectacular), and at one of their shows helped the girlfriend get a poster signed by all the members of the band.

Swing music and swing dancing did me well in the 90s/00s. A fad out of nowhere that was fun, upbeat, healthy, and relatively organic.

    • Ted S.

Screw the Super Bowl halftime show. Every year the pyrotechnics leave lingering smoke over the field through the third quarter, which has an impact on the game.

    • Rat on a train

When I watched the Super Bowl the television was muted during halftime.

      • The Last American Hero

They played a few decades late and looked old as shit up there.

    • WTF

When was the last time there was someone good for the half time show?

It’s because Obama’s buddy Jay Z has an exclusive deal with the NFL to select the halftime performers. So pissing on the NFL’s core fan base is part of the goal.

    • Drake

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 2008.

    • Gdragon

Tom Petty and Prince were both great. I think that Petty’s halftime show was more recent but I’m not certain.

      • Nephilium

Neither are bands that I would go see, but I can accept them as relatively popular options.

      • Gdragon

I thought the same thing before I saw each of them in concert.

Prince in particular might have been the greatest show that I have ever seen. It was like an enormous all-star funk jam session that just went on and on for hours

      • Gdragon

I was referring to when I saw him, not to his halftime show. But his halftime show was OK too LOL.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Gonna be tough getting them again.

      • Certified Public Asshat

I can accept them as relatively popular options.

I’ve got bad news for you on every halftime show pick. They are all popular.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Dead Prince beats live… (checks the name again) Bad Bunny?

What the fuck kind of name is that shit?

      • UnCivilServant

Dead Prince beats live… (checks the name again) Bad Bunny?

What the fuck kind of name is that shit?

If I had to guess, they wanted the Gayest name that still retained plausible deniability.

    • Threedoor

Last one I watched was U2.
One before that was The Stones.

I only went to the one superbowl party for the time show and the food.

    • R C Dean

One of the best halftime shows ever was before Fox got an NFL contract and counterprogrammed with the Wayans Brothers doing Men on Football.

Lately, Mrs. Dean has been switching over to the Puppy Bowl during halftime. Which is saccharine, but, hey, puppies.

      • Drake

Lately I’ve been changing channels early in the game and never going back.

  9. robodruid

Porn is about to get weird.

    • UnCivilServant

      About to?

Allow me to introduce you to… the internet.

    • Ted S.

      It isn’t already?

    • Not Adahn

Anyone else remember when Jesse introduced us to Boytaur porn?

      • UnCivilServant

I don’t recall him saying anything about anything. Honestly, I’m not sure our schedules overlapped much.

      • AlexinCT

        Da FuQ?

      • Not Adahn

Oh, you just looked it up?

The animated adventures of warty doomcock? guest starting Steve Smith?

      • Threedoor

        That was so hot.

My intense dislike for this choice has nothing to do with Trump.

No, let your MAGA RAGE flow!!

    • Rat on a train

Can I just have general hate of halftime shows?

      • juris imprudent

Even worse, soccer adopting them for their biggest matches (e.g. Champions League final).

      • rhywun

It’s part of the theater. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ridiculous pomp, garbage music, and an extended bathroom break are a time-honored tradition.

    • Mötteli

I googled “most popular song by Bad Bunny” – it was lame as hell. You can just refuse to listen to stuff that sucks without bringing politics into it.

  11. Rat on a train

The WNBA should train in San Ysidro not El Segundo.

    • WTF

Left unsaid in that article: where is the $150 Million coming from? It’s obviously not the WNBA since they lose upwards of $40 Million a year. I guess the NBA is subsidizing this facility as well? But why?

      • SDF-7

Keeping the sex toys off of their courts?

      • Gdragon

“Left unsaid in that article: where is the $150 Million coming from?”

        ———

I left my wallet in El Segundo…

      • rhywun

upwards of $40 Million a year.

        Or “1 kimmel”.

    • AlexinCT

Controlling the media has allowed the left to be outright evil, and then lay blame on the opposition now for decades. It is why the left freaks out about the old legacy media losing it’s monopoly.

    • Rat on a train

From my gated community, it looks fine.

    • Tonio

That article is brutal. Nicholas Kristoff is a propagandist who puts Josef Goebbels to shame.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

His Pinot noir comment is particularly disgusting.

      • Rat on a train

        “Let them drink wine.”

      • Ted S.

Especially since there are lots of better red wines than Pinot Noir.

Back when I was working at a trauma hospital in West Texas (trauma hospitals get crazies, druggies, frequent flyers in their EDs), one of the docs said we could really clean up the waiting room if we just put a Lortab lick (think, salt lick for cows) in front the hospital.

        I’ve heard worse ideas.

      • Nephilium

        Fourscore:

        Not here in Cleveland.

        We’re back baby!

      • Bobarian LMD

Extra fucked up, since I believe it to be a lot harder and a lot more expensive to kill yourself with cocaine.

There is probably a Browns joke here I’m leaving out, but I’ll save it for when heroin takes the top spot.

    • EvilSheldon

That embedded TwiX post did a good job of defining the conflict –

“The left’s activist edge went all-in on the idea that “reality is constructed” – gender, borders, disease categories, speech norms – all can be reframed.

That isn’t new; it’s been brewing in academia since the 60s. What’s new is that those frames escaped the seminar room and began being enforced by HR departments, NGOs, policy, and the threat of reputational destruction.”

What does one do with people who deny the existence of objective reality, but are otherwise sane enough that they can’t reasonably be institutionalized?

      • UnCivilServant

I’d rate denial of objective reality as crazy enough to require treatment.

      • R C Dean

For starters, you don’t hire them.

      • (((Jarflax

Philosophers and scientists pointed out a thing that is obvious on one level, namely that we do not directly interact with reality. We interact with a mental construct created by filtering incomplete and sometimes misleading sense perceptions through a set of mental constructs. What we take to be reality is our individual, and to an extent cultural, set of interpretations by imperfect minds of imperfect perceptions. As we communicate these perceptions back and forth, always imperfectly, we build up ‘social constructs’ which form a ‘consensus reality’.

The problem comes in when people mistake the fact that we can only ever have an imperfect model of underlying reality, and that those models can, and will change, for the idea that we can ignore underlying reality, change the models by lying, ignoring contradictions, denouncing anyone who points out said contradictions, and bring about a ‘new reality’.

    • Gustave Lytton

Portland’s problems are garden variety leftist policies. The pics are just the tip of the iceberg but the real problem is culture. Trump and federalized national guard won’t fix any of that. Unfortunately Kristof is largely right, too.

  12. Rat on a train

Electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle occupancy rules change Tuesday at midnight

The federal law permitting electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to use the HOV lanes without meeting the occupancy requirements expires at the end of the month and the Republican-controlled Congress did not extend the law.

Not only are Republicans taking away subsidies for the rich, they won’t let them abuse HOV lanes.

    • UnCivilServant

Wait – that was a Federal rule?

      • Sensei

I assume if the roads had federal subsidy. Most highways do.

      • UnCivilServant

I just thought the HOV garbage was a bunch of state rules.

      • Rat on a train

It was likely a federal law allowing states to exempt vehicles from HOV restrictions.

    • The Last American Hero

Ours went away about 15 minutes after Teslas made EV’s popular.

      • Rat on a train

Virginia has tiers of exemptions depending on when you first registered your car (-2006, 2006-2011, 2011-) so early adopters (the rich) received more privileges.

“Local California women’s rights activist Beth Bourne protested the policy allowing transgender students access to girls’ locker rooms by stripping down to a bikini at a local school board meeting.

Bourne, who chairs the Moms for Liberty in Yolo County, took part in the Davis Joint Unified School Board meeting on Sept. 18, where she highlighted school policies on locker room access.”

It brings the so-called “pedestrian movement” of postmodern dance – walking, standing, sitting – the sort of movement considered neutral, almost invisible, into collision with the Black body. When a racialised person simply moves, simply breathes in our shared streets, the piece seems to ask, is that ever neutral?

But it is not only the far right’s success in recent elections or the extreme budget cuts that feed into regressive cultural politics. The backlash was there from day one, and as I have sadly realised over the years in various confidential settings, it came from inside the house. It came from many of the people we work with day to day, who would identify themselves as progressive, leftist even, and who would claim to just look at the “quality” of a piece of work, rather than its author’s identity, towards which they think they are, of course, totally neutral.”

In 1960, Brazil was receiving food aid from the US. Today, it is the world’s bread basket. The key was creating a cutting-edge agriculture research institute, Embrapa – an icon of successful science policy that most people have never heard of. 🧵

Embrapa was founded in 1973, after policymakers concluded that the problem in Brazilian agriculture was a lack of useful knowledge. Imported advice from Iowa didn’t help tropical farmers. So – despite Brazil’s low income! – they decided to set up a frontier ag research institute.

Lesson #1: invest in human capital. Embrapa spent 20% of its early budget on sending researchers to US/Euro graduate schools, creating the talent density needed for frontier research. In 1973 only 5 researchers had PhDs; by 1988 it was >1000, most sponsored by Embrapa.

Lesson #2: stay ahead of politics. Embrapa ran ad campaigns advertising its successes, hosted frequent press conferences, mandated researchers give press interviews. Far from the saintly ideal of scientists untarred by public opinion! “Without publicity, we would be dead.”

lesson #3: respond to market demand. Embrapa focused its early efforts on expanding arable land because a big constraint on Brazil’s ag was rising land prices. They also targeted higher price crops. This “induced innovation” strategy gave direction and avoided a fractured focus.

My wife is Brazilian. One thing Brazilians have is a knack for finding other Brazilians. She found a whole group of them, and then a slew more when she started working for a biotech company.

Many, many of those Brazilians we met here were here specifically for the purpose of working with the UKY Ag Program in order to grant farming techniques back to Brazil. There was an entire program devoted to it. Working at the biotech company, she ran the program which essentially sent farmers around the world to share ideas and techniques. The vast majority of those farmers were Brazilian farmers coming to the US. She led the farm tours for years. They went to farms all over the country (world).

Australia want to regulate private tutoring businesses

    Helen Andrews
    @herandrews

People are misunderstanding this story, which is from Australia. It’s about Asian immigration. Sydney selective schools are 80-90% Asian. China banned after-school tutoring in 2021, and the reasons offered in this article are similar.

In fact, China’s tutoring crackdown in 2021 reportedly led some of those education companies to go into the Australian market

From the original article: “Where the majority of kids are in tutoring, the [classroom] teachers don’t bother to even teach certain content because they assume everyone’s done it in tutoring.”

Asian and Western norms about education are incompatible, and it is unclear how this worsening conflict is going to resolve. I wrote about this for Compact:

Math teacher was trained on equity, culture, but not how to teach math

Teacher training at a well-respected university focused on social justice, cultural relevance, students’ psychology — but not how to teach math, an engineer turned math teacher tells Holly Korbey in an interview. “Yellow Heights,” as he calls himself, is the author of Unbalanced: Memoir of an Immigrant Math Teacher.

Yellow Heights was a top math student in China, he tells Korbey. In the U.S., he enjoying working with students in his son’s school math club. After working for Microsoft and then in finance, his startup failed. He enrolled in a one-year master’s in teaching program to prepare for a new career.

Classes focused on justice and equity, supporting adolescent students in their identities, “culturally sustaining pedagogy” and building healthy relationships with students, he tells Korbey. There were classes on the practical part of teaching, but they also focused on culture.

“Teaching for Learning” was “pretty ideological. It’s about cultural background, adolescent development, a little focus on students with disability and how to deal with that,” says Yellow Heights.

“Content Area Methods” wasn’t about math content. “It’s basically about respecting different identities, working in different school environments — very culturally focused.”

The adolescent development course had one chapter on psychology, he says. There was little discussion. The class went on “six chapters dedicated to social issues.”

He estimates that 10 percent to 15 percent of coursework was about math or teaching. It was “a total waste of money, a waste of time.”

Throw off your antediluvian gender stereotypes, men

The road ahead looks grim unless something changes. The future will be built on jobs that demand patience, empathy and steady communication. Teaching, nursing, counseling and care work form the backbone of any strong society. They keep communities together, help the sick recover and guide children into adulthood. They carry respect, decent pay and growing demand. Yet men hold back.

Pride and habit stand in the way. Nursing carries a feminine label. I’ll admit it myself — when I hear the word “nurse,” my mind still drifts to a woman in scrubs. The teaching of small children is dismissed as women’s work.

That instinct feels natural, but it is a learned reflex. It blinds men to jobs that could offer real stability and meaning. And it can’t go on. The shortages grow deeper, the gaps wider and the cost heavier.

This requires a radical rethink. No lectures, no guilt trips — just a cultural reset. Men should feel pride in classrooms and hospital wards — the same pride they feel on construction sites or in boardrooms. These jobs build the future as surely as bridges or businesses. Without men stepping forward, the nation grows weaker, poorer and more unprepared.

Embrace the feminine. That’s how truly strong societies are built.

Yeah, fuck them sewer workers, power workers and garbage men. Teachers and *checks notes* ‘counselors’ are the real ones who keep society going.

Have they been hiding under a rock for the last couple decades?

      Yet men hold back.

Mabye they’re just not interested. Crazy talk I know, since men are just defective women.

They drove male teachers out of schools.

The country is already seeing the rise of sexless young men, drifting without purpose, cut off from work, family and the prospect of building a future. Whole swaths of men risk becoming spectators to prosperity. And history leaves little comfort here: when large groups of disaffected men gather at the margins, frustration festers into something darker — resentment, rage and revolt.

Oh, no the Great Incel Revolt is coming.

    What a maroon.

Maybe something to do with decades of feminist messaging saying that women can do a better job of anything men can do – plus more things that only women can do.

I’m not in the dating market so I don’t really know, but I’ve also heard that with social media, it’s easier than ever for attractive young women to put themselves “out there” and for rich guys to scoop them up into their harem, which leaves a dearth of women who are interested in dating non-rich men in their local area.

    Shakin’ ’em down here, boss

YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit involving the suspension of President Donald Trump’s account following the U.S. Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021.

The settlement “shall not constitute an admission of liability or fault,” on behalf of the defendants or related parties, according to a filing on Monday from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Trump sued YouTube, Facebook and Twitter in mid-2021, after the companies suspended his accounts on their platforms over concerns related to the incitement of violence.

Since Trump won a second term in November and returned to the White House in January, the tech companies have been settling their disputes with the president. Facebook-parent Meta said in January that it would pay $25 million to settle its lawsuit with Trump. The following month, Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter, agreed to settle its Trump-related case for roughly $10 million.

In August, several Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan expressing their concern over a possible settlement with the president.

The senators said in the letter that they worried such an action would be part of a “quid-pro-quo arrangement to avoid full accountability for violating federal competition, consumer protection, and labor laws, circumstances that could result in the company running afoul of federal bribery laws.”

We wouldn’t want that. Would we?
