I have returned from flying to London to watch the Browns lose in the last several minutes of the game. On the other hand, England was not ready for Clevelanders and Minnesotans to arrive. They ran out of most food, and all but one type of beer by the half.
But you don’t care about my woes, so lets get you some links.
For those of you still on Windows 10 (like me), I highly recommend you look into the extended security support. Why should you do this? Do you complain about spam calls, phishing emails, spam texts, ransomware, and botnets? Those are generally run on consumer machines that have not kept up on their security patches.

Wait, venues matter?
Well, it looks like I’ll be pulling for the Indianapolis Clowns next season.
This is close to my house, I’m planning on trying to swing by.
I’ve seen some questionable error messages pop up before, never one this fun,
I’m somewhat confused by how this would get exploited. Lots of games were (and may still be) temporarily pulled from storefronts while companies patch them.
I’m pretty sure that this is cultural appropriation.
Hunter Biden slowly turns into Billy Carter.
I expect this from India, not Brazil.
He was just looking for a picnic basket.
Can I pick the parties?
A beautiful disaster?
Where would he get that idea?
For the cocktail this week, let’s go with something that will take a bit of prep time.
Bone And Bacon
- 8 parts (2 oz) Bacon infused bourbon
- 3 parts (0.75 oz) Amaro
- 3 dashes black walnut bitters
- Beef/Bison broth ice cubes
I told you this one would take some prep work. Now, you could hunt down some off the shelf bacon infused bourbon, or you can make your own. To make your own, you’ll need to do some fat washing. Start with some bacon fat, either store bought (lazy), or cook up some bacon and keep the fat (plus… bacon to eat!). You’ll want the bacon fat liquid, but not too hot. If you cooked the bacon yourself, make sure to strain it to get out the crunchy bits. The amount of bacon fat you’ll need will be dependent on how much bourbon you wish to infuse. Aim for about 2 ounces of fat per 750 ml bottle of bourbon (go ahead and do the math yourself for less). I would suggest doing this in a wide mouth bottle, as it’ll make it easier to remove the solid bacon fat at the end. Let it sit for about an hour, and then freeze it overnight. remove the fat cap (either by scraping, straining, or a combination of the two). Keep in mind, that once it’s infused, you’ll want to store it in the fridge, so the fat in the bourbon doesn’t go rancid. For the broth ice cubes, mix the broth with an equal amount of water, chill in the fridge for 12 hours or so, skim off the fat, then pour into a clean ice cube tray and put it in the freezer. Now that the prep work is done, it’s the easy part… building the drink. You’re going to be using the broth ice cubes as your cooling for this, so fill a pitcher with those broth ice cubes, add the other ingredients, stir until chilled, and strain into a chilled glass of your choice. If you want to garnish it, we’re going big on this, so if you still have any bacon left, you can garnish with that, a pork rib, or you can rim the glass with crushed pork rinds. With those remaining broth ice cubes slowly melting in the pitcher, you could always add them into a bloody bull, a bloody Mary, or a red snapper.
Since I gave you homework, I’ll leave you with that. Hope your weekends go as you like, except for the Stillers fans out there.

Obligatory for you, Neph… glad you made it back just fine.
‘Total disaster’: Some furloughed workers plan to hold garage sales, dip into savings to weather government shutdown
They shouldn’t have to wait until the shutdown ends to get back pay for work they didn’t do.
Wait.
9 fucking days, and they’re already dipping into savings and selling their shit at garage sales?
Bull. Fucking. Shit.
They are so selfless they are willing to work paycheck to paycheck serving us. It almost brings a tear to my eye.
It is bullshit but that wont stop news from spewing thr nonsense.
Pay period ended Oct 4, pay day is Oct 14 and we are getting 72/80 hours of pay, so at most…full check minus $700 on top end.
Ownbestenemy – does that include furloughed employees? Just curious if they may be on a different payout.
One thing that MSM is being very, very vague here intentionally calling government CONTRACTORS as “workers”.
For example Mrs. Sensei had a work for a FedGov contractor and just lost that job. We will eat just fine and never counted on that cash.
Yes cause they were only furloughed on Oct 6th, at least for the FAA
Err…Oct 3 was our ‘orderly shutdown’ day
Muzzled Woodchipper:
They’re our best and brightest.
Just imagine what happens when the interest rates go up, pushing all of their adjustable rate debt up. You know these people are putting everything on adjustable rate debts, and have been balance transferring from one card to another when they can. Then racking the debt back up on the original CC.
I’ve known too many people who operated that way, and thought it was “normal”.
Also, federal employees have something called the Thrift Savings Plan, basically a 401k equivalent and the government matches your contributions up to (IIRC) 5% of your salary. You can take a loan against your TSP balance so anyone who has been working for the government for a few years should easily be able to cover a missed paycheck with a TSP loan. There is a small processing fee, but the interest on the loan goes into your TSP account.
Sush Tonio!! We are victims!
The stepson works for one of the major banks and there have been enough fed workers calling to cry about not being able to pay credit card bills that bank has called a major meeting in Texas next week to discuss how to deal with it . You would not believe the number of six figure earners who are mired in debt, even families clearing $500k per year.
Hopefully they get foreclosed on.
USAA and Navy Federal Credit Union both affer 0% payday loans and a large amount of FedGov are vets…so, no one is going to hurt through this.
Double dippers.
And they still spend like they did when they were drunk PFCs.
Well with my personal situation (Legal Drama [TM]). This is not even a blip.
Lat pay period we were shorted 3 days wages. My family is ok.
TSP loans are a thing.
Hardship withdrawals are a thing.
It turned out that IBM saw this as no laughing matter.
“The following week I received a most sincere letter of apology from the CEO of IBM himself, telling me how sorry he was I had to experience such a thing.”
And since it is IBM, someone probably got fired too.
One of the things we all did on the C-64 was look at all the plain text embedded in applications and games. Pretty soon they obfuscated it with rudimentary bit shifting.
Oh FFS, grow up.
I hope you’re not talking to me.
He was a long, long way from Kumamoto!
And Neph was a long way from various mourning lynx this week.
Or Linux Mint (obligatory Linux snobbery insertion here). 11 definitely doesn’t seem like a real upgrade if you are a more traditional user I think (don’t care about Widgets, AI, ads in the Taskbar, etc.)… though it doesn’t bother me too terribly much usually.
I really should run my Fedora installation more… I just have everything set up how I want it in Windows.
Linux Mint
🙂
I have Windows 10 for tax software. I run it under VirtualBox on Linux Mint. I made the VM’s disk small enough that Windows can’t update itself.
I’ve run Mint and Ubuntu. I’m happy to say the only Unix variants I run now are on two Raspberry Pi. One is a 3D printer server and the other a general device for various back end services like Pi-hole.
Both Mint and Ubuntu were run on the most generic and vanilla hardware I had in my collection. They still required way too much time a terminal fixing crap that broke with updates. I hated my time with it.
I hate MSFT for its enshitification of Windows, but it is far less work to keep running. If I didn’t game and work with devices that need Windows for updates and the like I’d just fork the money over for a Mac Mini and be done with MSFT.
While Linux is getting better for gaming support, it’s not quite there enough for me to completely make the switch.
We can hope for a SteamOS that actually is useable for day to day stuff one day.
Out of curiosity, what games have you been having trouble with? Maybe it’s that I’m a heavy steam user, but I’ve been shocked at what I can get to run effortlessly on my linux hardware– I’ve installed windows 11 on another partition, but much to my surprise have yet to find a game that doesn’t run on my linux OS.
Admittedly, I’m not playing anything online that requires anti-cheat…
Holy crap… a “standing” type ruling I can actually agree with… next dogs and cats will start living in Sin (if they can keep Tidus from doing his Jecht Shot at all hours, I suppose) or something…
Fed up, I disconnected my Win10 box and hooked up the Win7 machine. And don’t get me started about my Win11 laptop.
Hell, I miss XP.
I have a Win 7 device that that’s still alive because it has MS Media Center and the ability to decrypt CableCARD TV from Fios.
My problem with Win 7 is that none of the major browsers support it anymore for encrypted video from services like Netflix. The minor browsers still support current encrypted site certificates on Win 7, but I expect this isn’t going to last forever.
At this point if it came between a PC with a Linux variant or Win 7 – I’d very regretfully take the Linux box. See my comments above to SDF-7 for how I feel about Linux.
The next person who says “defend democracy” in my presence gets a lead sandwich.
It won’t do any good. They’ve already been eating lead paint.
You mean wall candy?
While that’s unfortunate about the tutor, Ms. Avila-Thomas will now have the time to work with her daughter on her dyslexia.
Also, surprised that AFGE and AFSCME don’t have shutdown funds, as other unions have strike funds.
PubSec unions dont operate like private unions
They grift even harder and vote blue more reliably.
They should all be turning big rocks into small ones.
I enrolled for the extended updates. Thanks!
Not a problem. The less compromised machines out there, the better.
“Democrats should remind local, red-state voters they still need two parties”
We could turn that around and say “Republicans should remind local blue-state voters they still need two parties”. Take a look at California.
Pass.
That’s different!
My first question on reading it, can I pick the parties?
(Which is how I labeled the link. In my defense, it’s been shite day at work.)
We did not turn the dems into radical leftists. Someone needs to remind them, Roger.
More than half of the precinct committee members when I started in my local Republican precinct were democrats. Most didn’t even try to hide it.
The scare has fueled nationwide angst as many people avoid gin, vodka and cachaça — the base of Brazil’s beloved caipirinha.
I smell a plot by Big Rum to increase their market share.
If they’re trying to nudge me into buying more rum, they’re way too late. I have more different bottles of rum in my home bar than of any other spirit – well, actually tied for first with single-malt scotch at the moment, but I got a gift bottle there.
How a German Second World War torpedo fuse works. There is an ad at the beginning of the video. Go to roughly the 1:50 mark to skip the ad.

Defending democracy against an authoritarian challenge may require political priorities that are fundamentally different from the standard playbook for winning elections.
I’m just going to assume it goes downhill from there.
furloughed workers plan to hold garage sales, dip into savings to weather government shutdown
DIP INTO MY SAVINGS?!!!!
*rends garments, gnashes teeth*
No, they didnt. That’s bullshit. Maybe they should learn to code.
You cant have my tax money for illegals.
Editors,
I have dropped an article in the hopper.
These euphemisms are odd
I’m pretty sure he means anal.
Thanks. I’ll take a squint at it.
The RIFs begin…

Free to speak
Still, for the first time in awhile, Monica Gorman is upbeat.
“I’m feeling energized, honestly,” says Gorman. “It’s felt for so long to me like federal workers have just been screaming into a void.”
Gorman works at NASA and is a member of the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers (IFPTE). She spoke in her personal capacity and not on behalf of the government.
Long before Congress failed to pass a funding bill, the Trump administration essentially started shutting down the government bit by bit, Gorman says. At NASA, entire offices have been shuttered, including her own at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. She had been using data science to predict the cost of future NASA missions.
How much does it cost? Too much. Shut it down.
Now, the shutdown has given her hope that some in Congress may be willing to assert their Constitutional authority over spending and push back against some of the sweeping cuts.
“To see people in Congress taking a harder line, I feel like we’re finally being heard now in a way that we weren’t before,” she says.
Finally Congress will take its responsibility to spend the nation into penury seriously.
That’s nice. I’d like to see Congress assert its Constitutional authority over spending in order to cut it.
What constituency is there for that?
“In the last two years, Jerry Seinfeld has broken from his typically apolitical public persona to become a vocal supporter of Israel in the wake of the October 7 terrorist attacks … Seinfeld made further anti-Palestine remarks. “‘Free Palestine’ is, to me, just—you’re free to say you don’t like Jews. Just say you don’t like Jews,” the comedian said, per the university’s student newspaper The Chronicle.”
Good on him, and extra-good on him for being careful to never be political in his comedy. I hadn’t heard about this, and normally one would, a famous Jewish comedian going to Israel after Oct 8? Oh, that’s why it was released by the uni student newspaper. Great example of Blue’s ‘silence being violence.’ Their purposeful omissions allow the cultist pro-Hamas to fester in their own bullshit, always eventually to spark.
See also: TMITE purposefully not showing Biden’s obvious decline. Ya know, I’d like to hear a crescendo of folk *angry* that they got taken for a ride, believing in Blue’s bullshit. However, I know that won’t happen. People have far too much invested in it. It’s religious. And predictable.
*Oct 7.
Seinfeld said he talks about it in private, but not for Work. I’m glad the bullshit flooded over, I s’pose. Folk need to hear it, and YEP! The KKK is at least *honest* about their hatred. Even this Hoosier ‘respects’ that. Jim Jones got his start here, kinda actually doing good work with blacks in Indy. Funny, how all the ‘best’ grifters hone their craft in ’emotionally popular’ environs. (Don’t want to add *too* much thought, after all.)
Seinfeld? The notorious anti-dentite? The guy who cavorts with neo-nazi O’Brien?
It’s “anti-Palestine” to point out their repeatedly-stated goal of the destruction of Israel? OK, then.
*reads*
Holy shit the whole thing is dumpster fire of leftist bullshit.
Sarah Kobrin, who has worked at the National Cancer Institute for nearly 22 years, says the Trump administration’s repeated attacks on the federal workforce have brought government workers closer.
“They have made us much, much stronger,” she says, speaking in her personal capacity.
I have to be here because I am here.
What have you accomplished in those two decades? What possible reason would anyone have to listen to you?
“They have made us much, much stronger”
LOL
22 years and you haven’t cured cancer?
You’re fired.
“I move papers from my in box to my out box. I am invaluable.”
Whew Trump’s age is really coming out in his voice
We can’t have that! The only acceptable shutdowns involve making sure the people are in pain, not government workers!
The difference in tact is telling. When Democrats want to grandstand about government shutdowns prompted by republicans they make sure the only services cut are those that will be rely by everyday people.
When republicans wants Democrats in some pain, they fire government workers.
We are not the same.
Thing is, those RIFs were drawn up in April or so…all following OPM and Union contracts.
Good luck fuckers
The same federal workers who have been like 90% in the bag for Democrats for decades? Those “political pawns”?
“Free Palestine” and the pro-Palestine movement as a whole are not inherently antisemitic, as many around the world have argued, including prominent anti-Zionist Jewish figures.
Oh, okay.
They don’t want to kill all the Jews in the world, just all of the ones in Israel.
And any others that they run into outside an embassy, or being athletic in Munich, or taking a cruise they decide to hijack, or on an airplane they hijack. But they only insist that all the ones in Israel die, the others can go on living until they happen to be somewhere they’ll be noticed.
“I want to kill all the Jews and 1 clown!”
“Why the clown?”
“See? I knew you didnt give a shit about Jews.”
Some of their best friends are Jews.
I got a usb switcher with a button on a cable for the switching. It’s the KV part of a KVM really.
Sooo much easier to switch between the windows box and the linux console (for stuff that doesn’t work over SSH() when I’m not mixing up which keyboard and mouse is hooled up where.
KM, KM, sorry. Keyboard Mouse, no video.
Blarg.
