Saturday evening Links

We’ve had a week of unseasonable warm weather the last week, to the point that I felt obligated to do one more pass through the garden. Yeah, I’m processing 35lbs of tomatoes this weekend. But we are headed into the ’60s next week, with rain forecast. An excellent garden season is coming to an end. I estimate I harvested around 120lbs of tomatoes off of two plants.

Links?

From my formal HazMat training, there are three kinds of “booms”. Boom, Ka-Boom, and Ka-Fucking-Boom. This was definitely in the latter category. I’m looking forward to reading the report, to see why there was such a large quantity of explosives in one building.

But we were told it wasn’t that bad. You mean…Joe lied to us?!?

I’m not sure why anybody gives a flying fuck about what Laura Loomer has to say about anything. Yes Laura, Qatar is going to get a hangar and some housing at Mt. Home AFB to train on the F-15s that we sold them and taught them how to fly years ago. Central Command is also located in Qatar. Nothing to see here, move along.

I’m thinking Xi overplayed his hand here.

Gaza Hunger Games begin.Time to posture and settle grievances.

In my veins.

Stop! I can only get so erect. Okay, I’m kidding. I hope they’re just warming up.

“Everybody does it!” No, I have never lied on a mortgage application. That’s how you go to jail.

That’s it for me. I have to go tear some stuff out of the garden before the rain. Peace out, Glibbies.

We should send the Qataris to Nellis. They’d love Las Vegas.

    • rhywun

I must be missing something. Why are we BFFs with them? I know they throw a lot of money around but a lot of that money funds terrorism and other anti-America activities at e.g. elite colleges.

      • Spudalicious

Because they let a major hub of US power set up in their country.

  6. Fourscore

I got my SS yesterday, someone must be working.

I was at a birthday party today for a classmate. Some woman walked up and asked if I was ,(insert real name here). I was the named person. I asked her who she was (is) and she told me. This was a cute girl, 2 years younger, that I had never spoke to, not once, in high school. She was a townie, I was a bumpkin from North of the river.

Now I hadn’t seen her for 70 years and had never talked to her ever but I guess just being alive was enough to make her curious. How she would ever recognize me I have not idea, I certainly would not have recognized her.

I did see a few others that I knew and recognized but I had seen them along the way, funerals mostly.

    • DenverJ

Thank you for sharing that story. For some reason it touched me. You seem blessed.

    • Trigger Hippie

“How she would ever recognize me I have not idea, I certainly would not have recognized her”. Have you ever considered the possibility that you’re just that damn sexy?

  7. Gender Traitor

Jeeminy criminy! Based on what that filmmaker is saying about Tish James’s apparent inability to get a mortgage without lying about it, if the Feds screw up this case, one or more of them need to be busted down to night court.

    • Plinker762

I probably over valued my snowmobile when I was applying for a commercial loan. I hope the feds aren’t after me.

      • Gender Traitor

If only there were independent sources lenders could consult regarding the fair market value of real property or of vehicles. Such a shame they have no choice but to take the borrower’s word for it. 🙄

      • Gender Traitor

I’m super cereal guys! Somebody could inspect* the property and look up the records of what similar properties have sold for…

You’re right. That would never work. 😞

*Disclaimer: NOT the same as a home inspection.

      • DEG

        They’ll be called “praisers” right?

      • Gender Traitor

Except when they come back with a value the seller doesn’t like. Then they’re called names I am loath to repeat. 😳

  8. Shpip

Gilbert also explained how James misrepresented her occupancy to get favorable mortgage terms. “My colleague Sam Antar pointed out that Letitia claimed that would be her primary residence. It was actually rejected by the bank nine times. The tenth time, Letitia says, ‘That’s gonna be my primary residence.’ It gets approved, and that was illegal ‘cause she got the mortgage and lower interest rates because she’d be the primary resident.”

It’s curious that so many of OMB’s state-level tormentors are so… intensely mediocre, with a big dose of hubris-driven law flouting.

Similar story with that Des Moines school super. What is it with these people?

    • rhywun

What is it with these people?

They’ve never been held accountable before so they had no reason not to flout every law under the sun.

  9. DEG

Still, cuts to the revenue-collection agency mean that Democrats’ efforts to increase government spending in the short term could backfire, with the ability to collect increased revenue diminished.

Somehow, I think that ability is not diminished at all.

    • DenverJ

I also would debate the use of “short term”.

    • Brochettaward

No, they won’t be. And Israel will fuck-up by funding the Hamas rivals who will eventually turn on them if they were to ever gain power. Rinse cycle and repeat.

      • Aloysious

At this point I’m ready for hamas to be replaced by new faces. They’ll probably still be murderous goatfuckers, but maybe they won’t all have a face that looks like a dog’s asshole.

Mom is going camping with Colin and the three boys (unsure about SiL) from Sun through Friday, staying at three or four sites along their route. That means I’m the Point Man for Dad. We’ve got a neighbor walking the pup in the morning, and a nurse -aid coming to help him out while I’m at work. He’s doing much better, but he’s still quite a bitch about it, at least internally. He’s good at not throwing *any* shade, tho. Mostly an internal struggle, feeling pathetic being helped.

Cubs tied with the Brewers in the 4th inning of their elimination game. I grew up playing, plus a batting cage in our back yard, but this year alone, I’ve likely watched ~100 games. Likely a bit more than that? Lots of (time) investment. I *really hope it doesn’t go 15 innings like the Seattle /Detroit game. *fingers crossed*

    • rhywun

Checked in a couple times during hockey intermissions and the Cubbies were like the Keystone Kops out there.

I have no dog in this fight. Go somebody!

      • Evan from Evansville

As that post being processed, that ugliness transpired. Odd, sloppy defense from a normally solid Cub-crew.

        I lack confidence.

It’s impressive that the neighbor has a sound system that I can hear from my front porch. I’m out here bopping along to some Mexican music. I didn’t even know I had Hispanic neighbors.

    • Threedoor

      Or it it polka?

      • trshmnstr

It’s in Spanish, so I assume not polka. I can hear it in my bedroom now, which is a bit less amusing than on my front porch.

      • Threedoor

Het over there and get a few cervesas

      • DenverJ

There is a huge amount of Hispanic and Spanish polka.

      • DenverJ

Especially in Northern Mexico. Most Americans don’t understand the large influence German and Czech, even a little Polish, had on Mexico.

    • rhywun

I don’t hear neighboring sound systems so much as yelling mental patients and meth-heads.

There is one guy that spends his days loudly whistling and throwing shit at traffic. Thank god Winter Is Coming so I can close my windows.

      • trshmnstr

My nearest neighbors are cows, so when we leave the windows open we wake up to moos if the roosters are off their game.

If the party is happening where I think it is (based on the direction of the fireworks), the sound is carrying a half mile or more through dense woods most of the way. Thats some legit amplification.

      • rhywun

the sound is carrying a half mile or more through dense woods most of the way

        That’s… nuts.

Kind of defeats the purpose of moving away from people. 😛

      • trshmnstr

My thought exactly! I don’t mind, it’s like a taste of living back in the suburbs for a night. Almost nostalgic. I’m sure my reclusive next door neighbors are none too happy.

      • rhywun

If it weren’t for the gullible permissive attitudes toward drug addicts and the mentally ill, it wouldn’t really be much different in “the city” because there are unspoken rules on how you are supposed to behave. So yeah, I like to bitch but it’s not as bad as I make it seem sometimes.

Special note for Sean and Shpip, I had my brother’s kids harvest my peppers before frost got to them. One ’40 oz’ paper bag of Reapers and one ’40oz’ paper bag of Ghost. Also small ziploc of the Tepins. Pretty good harvest for the small planter I have.

    • Shpip

Nice. My datils and reapers are taking forever this year.

Mrs F is becoming more Minnesodan as time passes. In days not so long ago we had some sort of tiny hot, hot, home grown peppers. She froze a bunch and would eat an occasional one as a garnishment. As time has passed I rarely see the peppers brought out for inspection.

My tastes are bland and extra bland. I’m certainly not going to eat any thing spicy.

        Good luck with yours.

      • DrOtto

Appreciate the sentiment. Mine’s old enough. If they can take just the leg and he can live a few more years, that’s the plan. If it’s metastized, we decided to let him go till he seems in pain, then let him go.

  23. groat scotum

What is it it convert to Christianity from nothingness? How does one feel Immanence out of nothing? And if I do find faith, whatever that means, am I just a false believer for falling into faith out of literally nothing, ex niliho, as it were?

How do I atone? How do I begin to atone for what I’ve done?

    • groat scotum

I know the answer. There is no answer.

    • Threedoor

      Joining, believing.
Not sure if there is a historical term.

Atone, Jesus said to go and sin no more. I’ve always liked the path that is belief first then repentance and walking the faith with the word as guide.

You dont come to him clean.
You come as you are and then get better. No one would have salvation if they had to be sin free first.

      • groat scotum

I don’t believe. I want so badly to believe. I want to feel immanence. But it’s elusive.

      • trshmnstr

I don’t believe. I want so badly to believe.

I got word today that a good friend of mine and a brother in Christ died last night. I spent many Tuesday nights sitting with him and lending an ear to his earnest desire that his adult children would repent and believe. However, no matter what he did, no matter what he said, he knew that he couldn’t reason them or cajole them into believing. They had to find it on their own. They had to confront their own failures and either lean on their own understanding or return to their roots and lean on God.

Likewise, there’s nothing that I can say or do that will cause a eureka moment where God just makes rational sense to you. I can’t zap you with a faith that erases the difficulties you have. I have no access to fairy tale magic.

That said, there is a deeper spiritual truth that exists. We’re not just stuff. There is a change that comes with the faith, albeit for most it is a gradual change, a change first in soul, and later in mind and finally body. It’s a growth, not a change per se, like exercising a muscle that hasn’t been used in a long time.

As my brother in Christ knew very well, we can be advocates, apologists for the faith, but we can’t drag anybody across the finish line, much as we’d like to. You’re welcome to join the community. Nothing holds you here eternally if you don’t want it to. We don’t sell timeshares, and you’re allowed to leave at any time if you just don’t believe it all.

      • Spudalicious

        Peace.

    • trshmnstr

How do I atone? How do I begin to atone for what I’ve done?

You don’t. You can’t. How does the broken computer fix itself? How does the lame horse win the race? They don’t.

The beauty of the Gospel promise is that you don’t have to. The single most prolific writer in the New Testament made a career of killing Christians. If his sins were atoned for on the cross, so are mine and yours. That doesn’t make light of the depravity, it makes clear the depth of sacrifice on the cross.

      • groat scotum

Thank you for your time and I’m sorry to have taken any of it. I’ll try to be considerate.

Someone else here mentioned it years ago, but here goes:

In the movie version of the show, Nightmare at 20,000 Feet‘s main character was played by John Lithgow.

Fast forward to the TV comedy Third Rock From the Sun. Lithgow is an alien (from outer space, not some third world shithole) who’s living in the U.S. He gets a visit paid to him by his boss, who is conveniently played by Shatner.

Lithgow’s crew greets Shatner at the airport and inquires about his flight. When Shatner describes seeing something horrifying on the wing, Lithgow replies, “The same thing happened to me!

And that, my friends, is what we call an inside joke.
