Saturday evening Links

Searching for “rain” brought up this buxom lass. I just went with it. Rain and early winter have arrived in Manly Time, just in time for me head to the Gulch and…rain and early winter. Sigh.

Links?

I use CarPlay and I like it. Seems like a dumb decision, but I don’t design cars.

You want SkyNet? This is how you get SkyNet.

Oh, noes! Yes, I’ll take saturated fat over sugar, and other processed carbs.

Please, please, please, please, please.

Oh, noes! Not illegal BASE jumping!

Oh, that’s right. It’s hurricane season.

I think SPACE SMITH just busted a nut.

That’s one.

Okay, that’s it for me. Gotta finish chores before heading East Monday. Have a good evening. Peace out, Glibbies.

I may have already used this one but, yeah.

“I am not done,” she said. “I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it’s in my bones.”

    “I am unemployable.”

  2. Overdecadent Kulak

Already asked this, but didn’t get a response:

Anyone know if the Discord is still active/have a link to it?

Don’t want to keep spamming this, but would be really cool to catch up over there, if it’s still around.

    • Spudalicious

      I’ll pass it on.

      • Overdecadent Kulak

        Thanks!

      • Overdecadent Kulak

        @spudalicious

        Got anything for me?

      • Spudalicious

Neph below has the only info. Looks like it was an early flash in the pan? Or not.

      • Overdecadent Kulak

Will dig around the forums more, but no luck on my first (admittedly, non-exhaustive) attempt.

If anyone is a participant/has the link, would be very grateful for an invite/share!

      • Overdecadent Kulak

If not, might post this same comment on a busier links post later this week, as long as that’s alright with the mods!

(Not trying to spam, just would be cool to reconnect with the old gang!)

      • Overdecadent Kulak

Also, anyone know if Holger (the Dane) is still around at all?

      • (((Jarflax

I am a member of the Discord, but never use it. email me at my user name minus the ((( @gmail and I will send you a link

      • (((Jarflax

Or friend me Jarflock is my user name and I can invite you

      • (((Jarflax

    • Gustave Lytton

Think so? But I’m not on it. Maybe try searching the forums for the link?

      • Nephilium

Not 100% sure, but I believe the Discord group had mostly split off long before the forums got started.

    • Ownbestenemy

I had just dropped out of the discord two weeks ago, otherwise would have tossed an invite.

It was active from what I can tell and completely different from here

      • Overdecadent Kulak

Know if Vyrhus and John Titor are still over there?

      • Threedoor

        Dumb question.
        What is a discord?

      • Nephilium

        Threedoor:

        A real time chat group.

Generally based around a gamer community, but a group spun up from early adopters here.

      • Threedoor

        So like AOL
Chat from the bad old days?

      • (((Jarflax

Vyrhus is active, John Titor is a member

The rash of illegal BASE jumping — greeted by cheers and whoops from the climbers suspended at various stages of the 3,000-foot monolith — has become a symbol of the overstretched defenses of the National Park Service during the first weeks of the shutdown.

“The most BASE jumpers I have ever seen in 30 years and 60 seasons on El Cap jumped off on a single morning and it was eight guys,” Zabrok said. “Never seen anything like it.”

An epidemic of lawlessness not seen since Dillinger.

    • dbleagle

Go for it BASE jumpers. As long as you don’t fuck up and peel a climber off of El Cap.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Eh, it isn’t like no one has died climbing El Cap. This way is no better or worse.

      • dbleagle

A climber splatting because they or their partner fuck up is just part of the price of admission and every climber up there knows it.

Having a third party kill you would suck.

The last time I climbed El Cap we were rudely awakened right before dawn by what sounded like a large rockfall coming our way. With fast pumping hearts we were desperately trying to find the rock to see if. or what, we needed to do. A short distance above and to the east of us I heard the distinct sound of a parachute opening and a shouted “Fuck yeah!” After our hearts returned to their chests, we watched the BASE jumper steering for, then landing in El Cap Meadows. He quickly gathered up his gear, jumped into a waiting car and departed before the Feds could arrive.

The most popular route up El Cap is “The Nose” and it is just a very short way west of the most common BASE jump off point which is where “The Wall of the Early Morning Light” tops out.

Like I said, if BASE jumping is your thing, enjoy it. Just don’t scrape me off the rock if you fuck up.

      • Threedoor

        Dbleagle, damn straight.
If your actions hurt yourself that’s on you.

Hurt someone else that pisses me off.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I rode motorcycles for 30 odd years, and this always sounded about the same.

Also, managed the bookstore in Merced back in the late nineties.

    • Ownbestenemy

People being free? What is this? America?

  4. Gustave Lytton

Branch took out the power this afternoon. On generator now. Once I turned on the fuel shutoff. Or turned the shutoff off?

  5. Ownbestenemy

Volunteer donation to military pay actually warms my heart.

    • (((Jarflax

    • Rat on a train

It’s a trap to get the US military classified as mercenaries.

      • Threedoor

Blackrock was cheeper and more effective than the military.

  6. Ownbestenemy

House OBE is fine…riding savings always sucks but you all in private sector do it when jobs dry up or layoffs occur.

My ire is with the government that claims I am expected to work regardless of pay status. I do it cause not once, but twice rose my hand to serve the people.

That said, I am also responsible to myself and family and know that I am a pawn when needed and know my pay can be cut or withheld at any CR or even true budget debate.

Know this, fly into Cincinnati, the system will run and are available to Air Traffic to use.

We all are not shit heads looking for government comforts but following the technology and jobs where they reside

Thank you for your attention to this matter

    • The Gunslinger

We flew Grand Rapids to O’Hare to Savannah this morning and had smooth travels. Kudos to you and your coworkers 👍

      • Ownbestenemy

From what I gather, our counterparts in Air Traffic are pissed news is claiming they can end this if they just call in sick.

That said, they are just following procedures at this point so no shortcuts, fuel saving routes, etc.

  7. UnCivilServant

Oh, noes! Yes, I’ll take saturated fat over sugar, and other processed carbs.

Food is bad for you, stop eating.

    • (((Jarflax

It’s not the food that kills you it’s the oxygen. Breathing leads to oxidation, and that produces all sorts of horrible toxins your body has to process.

If GM wasn’t already on top of my I will never buy another vehicle from them list, this would put them there.

    • Threedoor

Yeah. We had a ford with their own design GPS and tech suit. Terrible.

The GM GPS is bad too.

      Just let people upload Garmin.

  9. The Late P Brooks

“I think for the most part, people are respectful,” Winstead said. “We all love our parks and want to see them, you know, stay open and not get sold or leased out to oil and gas.”

They should sell El Capitan to Rio Tinto for a gravel pit.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris said that her time in politics has not come to an end, offering her strongest indication to date that she would consider a third presidential run.

I can see her running again. She’s not getting the nomination.

    • Ownbestenemy

She has been conditioned to believe she doesnt need votes, just vibes

    • Suthenboy

She squandered the donor money egregiously. I would be shocked if they gave her more trunkfuls of cash to throw to the wind.

      • creech

Even if she’s on her knees begging?

      • DEG

Creech, on the 2026 Maine US Senate election: According to Ballotpedia there 1 independent, 3 Republicans, and 10 Democrats running. The primary is in June 2026.

      • Overdecadent Kulak

They threw the last election intentionally, there’s really no other way to read it…

The donors figured out that TDS is a lot more lucrative than actually being in power, at least, that’s my theory

Riders on the Storm is my favorite Doors song. Not even close.

    • Spudalicious

I think I agree with you. In certain moods, “This Is The End” takes first place.

      • dbleagle

Even today, every time I hear “This is the End” I flash onto the opening of “Apocalypse Now”, truly one of the great tone setting scenes.

      • Spudalicious

        Affirm.

      • Fourscore

Spud, the Gulch for the winter or just for a visit? Just curious.

      • Spudalicious

Just for two weeks. That’s usually the longest I stay. It’s about two months a year.

    • Evan from Evansville

I really like their first album. Jimmy needed to eat more, and he wasn’t a great poet, but he was cute with a great look and I do like his voice. Ray Manzarek is by far the most interesting piece to their sound. Very cool shit.

“Katie Porter’s Ex-Husband Breaks His Silence, It’s As Bad As You’d Expect.
-Katie Porter is a “master manipulator” who embodies everything wrong with politics today, according to her husband of 10 years.
Matthew Hoffman, 50, told The Post the hotheaded liberal contender for California governor is a bad choice to run the deep blue state.
Referring to video clips that exposed Porter’s volatile temper and hostile treatment of staffers and journalists, he said, “It’s about time” they came out.
“The amount of staff she goes through. The horrible things that she says [about others] … those aren’t fabrications,” he warned The Post outside his home in Portland, Oregon.’

Watched the interview clip where she refused to answer follow-up Qs and was, quite simply, a very unpleasant person to the interviewer. As my general nature, and especially if I’m On Camera or having Serious Talks, I make damn sure I don’t *add* negativity, and easily manage to not respond to any introduced by anyone else. Put your Best Face on. It’s not fucking challenging.

When you’re a shitty human, especially when you’re somehow *used* to feeling like you’re God’s own pearl, apparently it is. No one here is surprised.

    • rhywun

I fail to see much behavioral or temperamental difference between her and 99% of all other politicians.

No, she’s a bad choice because… well, I don’t know her politics but she is a California Democrat and thus very likely a socialist.

  17. DrOtto

*Cadillac CUE enters the chat, then abruptly freezes and reboots* Yeah, good call GM, what could possibly go wrong?

  18. Mojeaux

I don’t use FB much at all. I can’t deal with seeing my friends go stark raving mad from TDS, say stupid shit about other issues, and act like if you don’t agree, you’re going to hell.

But today, I needed to message a friend and as soon as I open up FB, what do I see? My friends going stark raving mad from TDS and saying stupid shit and acting like you’re a bad person for disagreeing.

    • (((Jarflax

I get a lot less of that since Charlie Kirk was assassinated. I finally gave up on my stay friends despite politics policy and blocked everyone cheering.

      • Fourscore

Friends visiting last week wanted to watch Jimmy Kimmel.

I went to bed and I guess they did too, they left early the next morning, after breakfast.

      • (((Jarflax

I am not yet to the point of dropping friends for watching stuff or just being lefties, but cheering the assassination of a man for daring to debate leftists is a bridge too far.

    • rhywun

I pretty much dropped out of my old circle of friends around the time of the election of 45, and not because politics but it probably saved my sanity.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I am right there with you, Mojeaux. I use Marketplace, and occasionally see posts from people I know, and it is the same thing. I grew up in the heart of liberaltopia, I know I am the outlier of that group. I still like these people, and I respect their politics, and know they aren’t for me.

      So, I just ignore it.

  19. Mojeaux

All right, people. I am on the Zooms, and I’ll hold the fort down for a while. Last night’s seems to have been pitifully attended. Have we grown out of it after 5 years?

    • DEG

Speaking for myself, I have. I have had no interest in joining. I’d rather meet people in person or chat in the comments.

    • Threedoor

      I just started.

  20. Suthenboy

Laying in bed trying to go to sleep and a nagging question popped in my head – that link this morning with the ‘nazi’ dressed in full uniform harassing the girl…were his swastikas drawn with poop?
At least we finally have proof that there really are fully uniformed true nazis goose-stepping around in public beating up girls.

    • rhywun

      Nah, just some edgelord asshole.

My attention was drawn more to the frothing gibbering madness coming from so many young ladies these days that I didn’t pay much attention to that dork.

      • Suthenboy

        you catch my drift, right?
        It was staged.

      • rhywun

        It was staged.

        Who knows.

I’m increasingly ignoring crap like this because you can’t believe anything anymore.

    • Fourscore

I thought it was a costume party that he was trying to crash. What would have been funny if he’d had a friend in a US military uniform,
they could take turns holding the gun on each other.

      She was harassing him.

    rain and early winter

Here in Gulch East East, I do wish fall would be more than a blip between summer and winter. Only because I like to open my windows and it’s already too cold.

    • Fourscore

We’re a little cool, heat in the mornings. I don’t want to go out if there’s frost on the grass. That’s kryptonite for me, from past experience.

    • Beau Knott

Likewise in mid-Michigan. Real Autumn would be nice. Instead we got (late Autumn, then mid Summer, then late Autumn) repeat x 3. Now waiting on the first hard freeze, which my allergies would deeply appreciate.

  22. Sean

I’d like to thank Plex for feeding me pro abortion loving PA judge ads…ALL FUCKING DAY. I’m voting to fire those motherfuckers very, very soon.

    • rhywun

I hear election day is soon but I have no idea if there is anything to vote for where I live now this year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  23. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

It is bad enough that I have to root for the Dodgers, but if they lose to Canadians, this will truly be pathetic.

    • rhywun

You don’t have to root for the Dodgers. I mean, what the hell is wrong with you.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

        Dude, they are playing Canadians!

        Canadians!

      • rhywun

lol The Blue Jays probably have more American players than the Dodgers.

  24. Chipping Pioneer

    • Evan from Evansville

The continuation of a really good pitcher’s duel?

  25. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

So, that Maine Kampf dude, the guy running for Senate? That is a total trial ballon, see if they can get the Dem base to vote for someone who could go and split off votes from the right. But, with the number of D’s running for the spot, I don’t think so.

    • dbleagle

      LOL. Consider “Maine Kampf” taxed.

  26. Mojeaux

Derpy is in the Zoom snoring, and has been for an hour, and I can’t wake him up and no one can mute him because only Neph has the power.

    • rhywun

      lol

      I didn’t know what I was missing.

    • Evan from Evansville

Hahahaha, that’s hilarious. Zoom’s are hard unless there’s a specific topic. Active sleep isn’t one of them. Short of Hedy Lamarr or something, I’m not sure how long of that I wanna watch. (Listen. Cherish.)

I infrequently have much to talk about, or much *new* minus my own out-of -body experience Oct 6. Derp and briefly chatted about it. Turns out I had 2.5 or maybe 3 seizures that day and an ER visit I only have a couple mental snapshots of. On the still mulling over front, my biggest update is a thought about an hour ago of looking into more remote work. I’ve done a couple 6-week contracts grading 4th grade standardized tests (‘essays’), but something non-contract is the goal. Remote work was put off cuz keeping me out of physical work environments opens up nasty possibilities, but more cuz it keeps me away from society. Also true: At Walmart, plasma centers and glorified after-school babysitting, folk in America really don’t socialize at work. (Crush is an exception in large part because of her chit chat joviality.)

Important exceptions: The Hispanics and Ethiopians+ at work always sit together and chat at lunch and on the job. Reminds me of expats in Asia. Ya kinda have a secret language, especially if you talk fast enough and add some slang/ character, and you’ve got a built-in, ready-made community right there, even if you didn’t know anyone before, you’re all going through the ‘exact’ same cultural (and professional) shifts.

Fascinating to see it over here first-hand.

      • Threedoor

I’ll talk to anyone about just about anything.

  27. Derpetologist

Sorry I zoned out on Zoom. I’m on half dozen medications including injected, long-lasting antipsychotics.

I don’t expect to rejoin the workforce until I finish off the month supply of pills they gave me.

Oh yeah, and I figured out the 42 thing from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Gist: many if not most animals have a life cycle that is either prime (17-year locust AKA cicada) or whose factorization is three unique primes. The unique primes of 42 and 70 are 2, 3, 7 and 2, 5, 7 respectively.

Just about everybody reproduces for the first time by the age of 42 and 70 years is about the maximum human lifespan without modern technology or medicine.

“time when half the staff is furloughed and the park gates are wide open. These are not furtive leaps. The two parachutes — one black, one white — drifted down on a sunny Friday morning, floating over the heads of tourists and climbers already lined up in the valley, before alighting gently in the meadow.”

    nah. Bullshit.
    Change my mind.

Something to mine for Halloween sound. If you’re into creepy laughter anyway and strange sounds.
    Tod Dockstader, Luna Park.
The most frightening music I’ve ever heard, and a personal favorite, is Mr. Dockstader’s Apocalypse 1-4. Maybe you had to grow up in the 50s and 60s to really ‘get it’, but it’s a masterpiece of musique concrète.

    • Fourscore

Many years ago, about 50 or so, I made a continuous play tape for a reel-to-reel tape player. Recorded at 7.5 IPS and played back at 1.75. It was the most terrifying moaning imaginable.. Little kids were afraid to come in my yard, the Moms were laughing but the little tykes were terrified. I’d have to turn it off and turn the outside lights on to move the candy.

‘Course my almost teen aged kids loved it.

      • Beau Knott

        Good on ya!
        Tape manipulation is fun.

    Hey Knott

Thanks for the Raven Scholar recommendation in the what are we reading a few months back. One of my libraries had it on 7 day loan special. It was pretty good

  33. Trials and Trippelations

Headed off to Hot Springs NP today. From what I hear they closed the visitor center, but it isn’t a park you can “gate off” so all the trails and spring fountains are accessible.

The internet say the town of Hot Springs has the NP passport stamps, so that’s nice
