The predictions for the winter here in Manly Time has been below average temperatures. As a result, it’s a sunny 51 degrees today, and there’s not a lick of snow on the mountains. The local ski resort would normally be getting ready to open, and now it will be sometime in December. Whaddya gonna do?

Never change, Shit-cago.

“Right leaning” in the UK means not communist.

The only interesting thing about this story is that it’s on the “Left leaning” Media-ite site.

Yes, the two sides of the Establishment Uniparty don’t usually mingle in the public eye.

Womp womp. You lost.

Sam steps in.

Where’s Michelle with a sign when you need her?

Never change, Alabama.

Okay. That’s enough for me. Time to go work on my tan. Peace out, Glibbies.

So I missed it if it was discussed in-depth here, but I’m struggling to come up with any particular explanation for why Trump reclassified various professions as not professional to exclude them from various federal loans. The list of those chosen definitely has one thing in common – career paths chosen by women. Is this an actual legitimate case of women hardest hit in the modern world?

    • R.J.

You missed your own movie night too. Sad, I was.

    • RAHeinlein

Most of those are ultimately relatively low-paying and have extremely high enrollment levels. Either way – those professions are still eligible for $20,500 student loans annually. These degrees as graduate studies should be classified as a Professional Student – these people are just taking money to fund their lifestyle.

I read the article and comments. Glad it went over well, and excited to see Song Of The Song. Thursday nights just aren’t a good time for me. It’s also No First November and I have to be careful that my chakra does not leak. My powers are so incredible that they sometimes cannot be channeled.

    • Gustave Lytton

Looks like arbitrary bs. PharmD, JD, OD, theology or chiroscamster are professional degrees by statue but PA or DNP aren’t?

Under that plan, the newspaper would have been overseen by Jeff Zucker, the former president of CNN. But the takeover was blocked amid political outcry over foreign state ownership of British media assets.

They might make the state owned BBC look bad.

Yes, the two sides of the Establishment Uniparty don’t usually mingle in the public eye.

My initial thought was that it was really poorly played on their part. You invite Trump/Vance and hope they don’t show so you can call them classless. Instead they refused to do so out of some sort of misguided spite and made them look like the good guys who are truly separated from the Washington establishment.

Combine that with the recent talk about the Bush’s trying to revive their dynasty and, yea…

The swamp just has no fucking idea how they are actually perceived by most Americans.

    Speaking of BBC journalisming

Following bitter rows, the UN climate summit COP30 in Belém, Brazil has ended with a deal that contains no direct reference to the fossil fuels that are heating up the planet.

It is a frustrating end for more than 80 countries including the UK and EU that wanted the meeting to commit the world to stop using using oil, coal and gas at a faster pace.

But oil-producing nations held the line that they should be allowed to use their fossil fuel resources to grow their economies.

And we all had such high hopes.

    • Grumbletarian

How dare these nations refuse to embrace poverty for the masses so these private jet-setters can preen about their superior morals!

    • Spudalicious

That entire conference was gross and obscene. They cut a nine mile swath through the Amazon rain forest to build a highway, and then cleared even more of the forest for the convention center. For a conference on climate change. Fucking scumbags.

    • rhywun

no direct reference to the fossil fuels that are heating up the planet

Because that is a fantasy belief and the jig is up?

    • creech

The real “high hopes” of the delegates were probably fulfilled: party hearty, drink top shelf liquor and wine and drugs, gobble fine food, get laid by Miss Universe-level talent, network and get insider tips to make their next millions.

  7. Brochettaward

Regarding Texas redistricting, there’s nothing Earth shattering to add. Some court wants to rule they’re excluding black voters while ignoring the complete disenfranchisement of conservative (and mostly white) voters in deep blue states.

The left trying to claim the moral high ground here is almost up there with them claiming to be the ones fighting for justice in the Epstein scandal as if their side didn’t spend years dismissing there was any there there until they could tie it to Trump.

    • Spudalicious

The purported purpose of the redistricting was to address the massive influx of hispanic residents over the past five years. You know, to make it more racially equitable.

  8. Gustave Lytton

Cannot get local cranberries anymore. Still being grown but retail is all Canadian and Wisconsin. Fuck that horseshit.

    • Ted S.

You have to let them linger.

      • R.J.

        Lingerberries?

      • Bobbo

        GONG!

    • DenverJ

The GF traveled 45 to go to the closest Trader Joe’s today. Came back with many yummy things. One was a container of cranberries, which she promptly shoved into an over-full fridge and shut the door on. It was a mess. They looked good as I was throwing them away, though.

      • Bobbo

We got fresh cranberry orange stuff from the deli, gladly avoiding the door slam

      • rhywun

My small town has a Trader Joe’s and it seems to attract exclusively Chinese female graduate students. I’ve never been to one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

Whole cranberries don’t have to be refrigerated. They are so acidic it takes a long time for them to start to go bad. They kept so well that in colonial times they could be shipped via sailing ship to Britain and still be edible on the other side of the water.

    • Aloysious

I thought The Cranberries were from Limerick, Ireland.

    • Ted S.

Are you allowed to share the reason why?

      • Ownbestenemy

Cause im ineligible to receive bonus for taking scheduled and approved leave

      • Ted S.

        Oh, yeah, that.

I’ve got my own irritating bonus story. Work instituted a monthly performance bonus scheme. When my supervisor messaged me how much of a bonus I’d earned for October, the gross amounted to somewhere between six and seven hours pay. So over the course of the year if I hit the same bonus I’d get the equivalent of about one extra paycheck before taxes. Not a lot, but an extra 3.5% or so is nothing to sneeze at. Now, from when I’ve worked overtime I know how much gets withheld. After the 401K and various taxes it’s a bit under one-third, which sucks. But, on the bonus check, I got a shade under 53% of the gross bonus. NYS took out about 10.8% in income tax, which is the rate you’d pay if you make over a million a year, and even if this were treated as daily pay, it still wouldn’t put me in a tax bracket like that.

The only saving grace is that I was going to owe anyhow since I’ve got CDs and mutual funds that pay untaxed dividends that my normal withholding only partially accounts for. So I’m probably still going to owe, but just a bit less.

      • Gustave Lytton

Bonus/one time payments are withhold at a higher rate than periodic payments. IRS has lowered it to be more in line than it was in the past. Sounds like NYS is still doing it at the max rate.

And you still only pay at the same tax rate on April 15, bonuses are not taxed higher.

      • Ted S.

It’s my money, and I want it now. I don’t want the state to have it.

      • Gustave Lytton

        Thank Milton Friedman.

  12. Brochettaward

I’m hardly any expert in the field of oil drilling, but it really blows that these decisions are left to the whims of whatever party controls the White House. Exploration and exploitation of found reserves can take years, can it not?

Maybe it’s easier to make some short term gains than I realize, but it just seems like a fruitless venture when you know team D will get pack in power and close the whole thing down. And we haven’t even touched the inevitable legal battles that are going to result which means none of it will likely be touched until Trump is nearing the end of his second term.

The odds are that the pendulum swings back in 2028 and D’s take back power.

The crazy shifts in policy on things like this are no way to run a country. The Dems benefit here because even if a R gets into power for some time, you’d have to be crazy to invest resources into this knowing that it will all be for nothing when the other side gets in. The ratchet will ultimately move one way over a long enough timeline.

    • rhywun

Funny how it was fine when Norway got rich on offshore oil but god forbid any American state do so.

California leaders “blasting” something tells me that thing is a good idea. On the bright side, the klimate krisis konsensus is rapidly falling apart so maybe the decision will stick this time. Or next time.

    • Threedoor

It’s massive investment in time and money.

Beyond that I don’t know much.

I do know that the deep water horizon was where it was at because of regulation. They shallower part of the gulf was locked up by the nimbys so they could only explor and drill deeper.

Family dinner out and the 12yo brought a friend. Cool, but both of ’em never engaged in any conversation with the others. Also normal, but their eyes were glued to their phones under the table. I strongly disapprove of kids having ’em so willy nilly. Not going to be good. To his credit, he was excited to go camping this summer, for a couple nights when no tech was allowed. (I couldn’t attend but was told.)

The 5yo had more fantastic Us time.

Biggest slap today was my engine light going on. Dammit. ’17 Kia Sportage, just got it two months ago. Engine looks fine and no other warning lights. Checked the gas lid and there was some liquid there, so maybe it wasn’t shut all the way? That apparently can cause it. Well. That’s gonna be something to address.

I’ve got a draft submitted, ‘Where’s Walgo?’ Just need to sort the layout and maybe a touch or two, here or there for punch. Will be at least three parts and am excited to share the weird, wild world of the aisles.

    • Threedoor

OReily auto or autozone will usually scan it for you.

      • Threedoor

I could but it’s not worth the drive.

      • Evan from Evansville

@Threedoor: The OBD-II scanner? I’ll see if Walmart Auto can do it while I’m there. Hopefully it’s a ‘Put Tape Over Yellow Light’ Problem.’ That would be an Injection of Convenience I’d rather appreciate. Otherwise, the nearby Autozone will be my go-to. I’m fairly confident it’s not a serious

That font looks like a lot of work. At that point, I kinda see the logic of just adding your own letters.
