I could get my CDL from the local technical school for less than $2k. I don’t want to take that route, but it’s nice to know I have that option. There was an Australian trucker glib for a time.
Right now it’s a toss-up between teaching and welding. I’m pursuing both and seeing what happens. I dropped off some math tutoring business cards with the USMC recruiter today. It was the first time I’ve ever seen a solo USMC recruiting station. They must do that in certain areas. Appalachia is the bread and butter for USMC, kind of like the South is for the Army.

Class A CDL is only getting harder and more expensive to get. Do it, keep your medical current and you wo t regret it.
When I was 18 I got a CDL, called a commercial or chauffeur’s license at the time. It was a written exam, in addition to a regular driver’s exam., followed by the a driving test in a routine car. I forget the cost, probably about 3 bucks.
My buddy and I did it ’cause we were temporarily unemployed and the testing could be done on a Saturday. Never had a need for it, ever, so it expired
while I was dressed in my finest government issue attire.
The federal CDL didn’t exist until late 91/92.
Many states didn’t bother with the Chaufeers lisence. I think that was mainly an east coast thing.
