AI Music

AI is gonna terk mer jerb! Well, maybe it should. For the last 26 years I’ve had a song stuck in my head. A song that doesn’t exist. I have been adept at writing since I was a child, but music is a foreign language to me. I can’t wrap my head around it. A guitar doesn’t make the same sounds as a french horn, how is that the same note? So I don’t get that shit and I never will.

Despite this lack of being able to understand anything about it, I have written lyrics since I was a teenager, the songs stuck in my head. I have a certain kind of voice, as those of you familiar with the cartoons will know; and I have been friends with a lot of musicians in my life. All of these musician friends were eager to team up and use my lyrics and my voice and then…nothing. I was never able to get any of my musician friends to actually turn any of this into music.

I got together once in college with some musician friends and we were going to start a band and they loved my lyrics and I sang the songs to them and they loved them. But then they started talking about how I wasn’t singing it in time and so they couldn’t write music for it. I got no fucking idea what that means. If I can sing in that rhythm you should be able to play in that rhythm.

I had a kinda relationship kinda with this stripper who played guitar, she loved my lyrics, loved my voice, thought it was awesome…couldn’t write a song to go with it.

I paid $96, worth it to get it out of my head finally, to SUNO to make an AI version and it took less than a minute, and is almost exactly what I’ve had stuck in my head for 26 years. That $96 is for a one year subscription, so I can get all this shit out of my head. 26 years of this fucking song no one else can hear being stuck in my head and AI did it in less than a minute. Sorry musicians, AI terk yer jerbs. It’s not the death of jobs, it’s the death of gatekeepers. Countless people who understood music over the last 26 years could have helped me do this, but they didn’t.

At least AI won’t take your gerbil.

First impression: You’ve got a nice voice, for the style. Oh. Fakery is fakery. Uh. Wait. (How much did you AI the voice?) But it works. It’s not my go-to music but it sounds good. Lyrics work well.

The uncanny valley is distressing as we, I drive into it. Drummer, here. Drum machines were the vanguard robots in this takeover. No biggie and actually awesome. Drummers are kinda expendable. Spinal Tap was right about many things. I never really had a problem with drum machines. They’ve always just sounded different, worked in their own spot. But ‘soulless,’ without feel, I s’pose. I could tell when they were poorly done. Programmed, synthed, whatever back then. (Now? Uh.) Having said that, Radiohead’s electronic stuff works (through King of Limbs) for the song and feel. They are great in their own space.

Our happy dive into Skynet is kinda based on this. It elevates the human, doing what we couldn’t do without help. And other humans. Hrm. So it’s fantastic. It really is. (And they’re working on artificial wombs and all sorts of shit to dehumanize us, with our eager consent.) Where are my sex dolls?! Cuz when those get even close to OK, society will end.

The convenience and legit ‘makes life easier’ shit is what rankles me, cuz of course I go along with it. But I’m an uneasy driver into the AI beyond. My car’s kinda Mad Maxy on this road. Needs more flame thrower guitar solos on my hood, but I’ll think of something.

    Well done, OP.

No idea who is singing but that doesn’t sound like CP.

Me, I dream synth melodies. Always have.

I can’t do lyrics for shit so if I ever stumbled into a music career somehow it would be like a Tangerine Dream revival band or some shit.

My only clue was the stripper said he had a lovely voice. So at least he *does* sing. I pondered that for a while, ‘specially considering his ‘normal’ voices.

The AI likenesses shit is a legal shitstorm, already afire. Mr. Alright Alright Alright is damn wise to somehow trademark his entire license. Everything can be faked. We really are through the looking glass.

DNA is too easily taken for verification. An implanted chip and code, likely. All secured in a govt facility that promises to never leak it or use it in any way one wouldn’t like. Nosiree. But it’ll make logins so much easier!

It is weird. Nerdier people than me have probably thought this through but at the very least I have in mind the fact that no video, picture, or audio can ever be used in a court of law again.

      • Fourscore

I’ve thought about that as well, Rhywun.

    • CPRM

The whole thing is AI, I think I might be able to use my own vocals, but I haven’t played around with that yet.

    I sang the songs

    Did you write the songs?

CPRM, there are a lot of things I don’t understand and music is at the top of the list. A musician will say “Key of G” and all the guitarists start tuning their guitars. No idea how the piano player or any other musician “reads” music.

I like to listen to music, though these days I may not hear what others are hearing. In grade school I remember the teacher with a pitch pipe, if that’s the right word, and the other kids would start singing.

    You are not alone.

AI won’t kill art for the same reason photography didn’t. Photography pushed abstract art ahead, but the traditional styles remain.

The most popular forms of music have been written according to formulas for a long time:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY8SwIvxj8o

Another question is who owns what. If I make a picture with AI, am I the artist? Well, painters use paint, brushes, etc made by other people. AI is just another tool. Musicians play instruments someone else designed and built. Writers rely on tropes that have been around for thousands of years. If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.

Look, I created it last week.

It goes back way further than band members v songwriters for ‘creation,’ but it’s a curious legal dilemma. I sure as fuck don’t wanna be put together from random pictures and be shown assassinating someone. (Well. Most people.)

Currently, I’m still in the ‘it’s icky’ camp. Cuz you can fake way better docus/etc of the Grand Canyon than ya could actually make if humans were there actually doing it. AI art isn’t wrong, it’s not bad, it’s useful and pretty. But from the 30k feet above view, it icks me out.

Forgery, counterfeiting, and methods for detecting it have been around for a long time.

My favorite examples are the intentional errors in dictionaries and maps to deter plagiarism.

One easy way of telling if someone used AI to write something is to put hidden characters (same color as the background) in the question and seeing if the answer mentions or is affected by them.

That led me down a fun rabbit hole. This fun Karl Fuchs bit got me thinking, about what he was sending the Soviets: “As much information as he had available about the development of the implosion bomb, a topic he worked on substantially in a technical capacity. This included its theory, dimensions, components, and the justification for it being worked on (the fact that reactor-bred plutonium cannot be used in a gun-type design, something that had caught the United States by surprise in mid-1944). This included a “a sketch of the bomb and its components, with important dimensions indicated”, as well as detailed information about the “urchin” neutron source (initiator) of the plutonium bomb, on which he was credited as a key inventor.”

It’s fun to think, you’ve got all this intricate info about shit that very, very few people would actually ‘understand.’ It’d be fun to add some math that led to large 80085 as a ‘copyright’ trick and to get some middle school laughs.

      I’m a very serious person.

It’s a good song, CPRM. Before there were songs, there were lyrics. Before there were lyrics, there was poetry.

Hmm. Are you sure music didn’t evolve before language?

you might be onto something CP

      • Evan from Evansville

For sure. Cooing melodies certainly came before the lyrics. Reminds me of the Far Side where people can interpret what dogs are saying. It’s just a bunch of dogs barking with speech bubbles coming out:

“HEY!” “HEY!” “HEY!” “HEY!” “HEY!” is all they’re saying πŸ™‚

Mamdani hosts anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil and his family at Gracie Mansion for Ramadan

I don’t believe for one second that “hizzoner” is the pious Muslim he claims to be so much as a ratfucker communist bent on pushing his agenda in your face and daring you to object.

    • Evan from Evansville

NYC is fucked. Mamdani immediately blamed white supremacists while openly ISIS fucks are throwing (shitty) bombs in Manhattan. Their strength yoked, Mamdani is thrilled to unleash his useful idiots.

I suppose I’m happy NYC was pissed off enough to cause some ruckus at the Khomenei vigil. I hope they realize how fucked they are.
(They don’t.) I hope I’m wrong. (I highly doubt it.)

      • rhywun

I still like NYC enough to hope they come to their senses. Hell, I lived there (willingly!) for 25 years.

IMHO this is a sign of broken politics. I do not believe for one second that a majority of New Yorkers support his sick platform but as long as politics are a zero-sum game between Team A and Team B nothing will change.

The other lyrics I AI’d into songs can be found here. And as I didn’t make it clear in the article, it’s the AI singing, I think I can use my own vocals but haven’t played with that yet.
