  1. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

All right, all right, I will start working on a new post today.

  2. Threedoor

Oh crap I’m in WY right now.

      • Sean

        😀

      • Threedoor

Come and get me big boi!
I’m across the freeway from the original capital cupola.

      • R.J.

Jeez, don’t say that! At the least the dude can leave a 3 foot diameter poo pile in your vicinity to express his displeasure if he can’t catch you.

  3. JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

How do we know that STEVE SMITH will honor that card?

    • STEVE SMITH

      HIM HONORABLE RAPESQUATCH!

      • Ownbestenemy

        Uh huh…

    • (((Jarflax

Look at it this way. If you meet STEVE without the card you get raped. If you meet STEVE with the card and he honors it, you don’t get raped. If he doesn’t honor it you’re no worse off than without the card.

      • ron73440

Should be fine as long as you’re not in RI, WY, or Guam.

        Sorry about your luck threedoor.

That is an odd collection of places where it is invalid though.

      • (((Jarflax

I think STEVE SMITH was barred from Guam due to the risk of an especially energetic rape tipping over the island.

    • rhywun

Buh bye. Can you stay there permanently and spare us from more tedious, performative agitprop?

      • Gustave Lytton

        Weren’t they always so?

      • rhywun

No idea. I have never paid that any attention.

it has become unsafe for our guests to visit the country

How is it unsafe? Please be specific about what you think is going to happen.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

The nice thing about being on the “right side of history” is that you don’t need to get into specifics.

If proggies are trying to shame me, staying in their own country is the wrong way to go about it…

    😥

I’m getting lighter, but I still broke my chair. How the *bleep* did I bend the castor posts?

    • Sensei

Do the posts put castor oil in some way on the casters?

      • UnCivilServant

No, they connect the wheels to the legs of the chair.

      • UnCivilServant

And pollox on you poking at the speling errrers.

      • Sensei

I make plenty of spelling / typo errors. I just thought that one a bit humorous.

I enjoy that Beta Top Man Nate Anderson managed to make a guitar effects DSP political.

To illustrate some of the sounds on offer, I wrote a little song about a dirtbag billionaire who makes rockets, gets chased off the Earth by angry locals, and ends up crashing his ship into the Moon out of despair. It’s called “Master of the Universe.”

Beta Nate aside if you are a guitarist with $1,500 you don’t know what to do with this seems a good purchase.

I still remember the look on that Admiral’s face when he said, “We don’t anticipate that.”

I also remember his office tried to cover for him and claim he meant adding that many people would be a tipping point, expecting us to forget he made a tipping motion with his hand and he said the word capsize.

After eight rewrites and three complete topic changes, my first shooting article is done. I’ll send it in tonight.

    • ron73440

Cool, I look forward to reading it.

    • Suthenboy

“…eight rewrites and three complete topic changes…”
Welcome to my world. My desktop is cluttered with 1/2 to 3/4 articles that always seem brilliant when I write them but after two weeks read like a HS sophomore wrote them, at least to me. I think some of them are 5 or more years old.

      • EvilSheldon

It’s nice to know that my ADHD isn’t alone. 😄😄😄

I do keep a file on the home server with all my half-formed thoughts, notes, and semi-abandoned articles. If nothing else, it’s a fertile mine for ideas.

    Electric flying taxis

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved eight pilot programs that will allow a handful of companies, including Archer Aviation (ACHR), Beta Technologies (BETA), Joby Aviation (JOBY), and Wisk to start widespread electric aircraft testing as early as this summer.

The three-year program, which will span 26 states, is designed to ensure U.S. companies lead the way in next-gen aircraft used for personal travel, regional transportation, cargo logistics, and emergency medicine, Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in remarks Monday.

The pilot program, known as the Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program, was announced last year through an executive order by President Donald Trump in an effort to speed up development of the futuristic aircraft.

    Welcome to the future!

    Global warming

In the second quarter, ski resort net revenue decreased $53.2 million, or 4.7%. As expected, Vail Resorts mainly attributed that change to “unfavorable weather conditions.”

“This has been the most challenging winter across the Rockies that we have ever experienced with the lowest snowfall levels in more than 30 years for our Colorado and Utah resorts, combined with warmer temperatures, resulting in reduced terrain throughout the quarter and into February,” said Katz in the release.

    ——-

Still, Katz said Vail Resorts was pleased with the “strength and stability shown by our operating model” amid the tough season, calling the fall off in lift revenue “modest.”

Like other companies in the business of selling ski passes, Vail Resorts aims to get skiers to commit to a pass or tickets in advance. Epic Passes for the 2026-27 season went on sale earlier this month.

That approach can smooth over variability in the weather. If skiers pay for their skiing before the winter starts, bad snow years have less of a financial impact.

Fuck Vail Resorts. I can’t help thinking they have destroyed skiing with their innovative thinking and massive overeinvestment in the Disney-fication of what once were known as “ski areas”. Walk up to the window (if such a thing even exists anymore) and ask for a lift ticket; $300. They want everybody to buy a pass because it’s easier and better for Vail Resorts.

In a similar vein, last night I did my taxes using TurboTax.

Which I have consistently used for the last 10 years.

This year they forced me into Turbotax online, because they don’t support Windows 10 on the desktop version. The online version won’t let you see your forms until you file.

Immediately, it was $20 more than last years version. At about every third prompt, they tried to upsale me to a better version or pay for an ‘expert’ to review my work. Eventually, I entered everything and at the last step, they informed me that I HAD TO use the premier version (because I had sold some stock at a loss).

They offered me the upgrade for more than the software cost on Amazon. I raged and screamed at the sky and eventually got a real person who was able to credit me the cost of the original purchase and threw in a 20% off coupon for my woes.

Bottom line: TurboTax is the STEVE SMITH of tax software. DO NOT BUY.

      • Plinker762

So you are not their Turbo lover?

      • rhywun

I’ve been doing it online for 10 or 15 years. Express1040 or something. Yeah they try to upsell like crazy but otherwise decent enough. I don’t recall a separate “premium” version but I don’t need anything fancier than the regular 1040.

I am concerned this year that SSA keeps throwing disability money at me after I went back to work full time months ago and I have no idea if I am supposed to report it – they have not sent me any sort of tax form.

      • Bobarian LMD

SSA disability? My wife did not get her form this year either. She had to go onto the website and download.

      • Fourscore

I did my Turbo Tax a couple days ago. I had a big tax bite because of some capital gains from some property sales. I’m never sure if I’m right or

not but Mrs F says that’s the IRS’ problem. Let them figure it out. I haven’t seen the TT bite show up but I’m sure they will bump me. At this

juncture all want is to be finished.

      • rhywun

Ah so there IS a form? Interesting. Thanks for that info.

I haven’t spent a dime of it because I was assuming I have to pay it all back. Who knows.

“lowest snowfall levels in more than 30 years ”

Here’s my advice for stock investors

I guess I could check to see what NOT to do.

    • Suthenboy

You know those people that are always overly excited and pushing you to invest in ‘the next big thing!’?
“Hydroponics man! You cant lose! All you have to do is give me $$$$$! It’s a sure thing!”
They seem so excited but deep down you know he has a long string of being wrong and is probably just looking for money to pay off his gambling debt. That is your average stock advisor.

Never buy on margin, Buy S&P or something similar and count on it paying your children. Dont go into it with the gambler’s mentality.

    • slumbrew

Perhaps that’s the sort of thing the Ig Nobel folks were referring to.

      (narrator: it was not)

  14. The Late P Brooks

    Buy S&P or something similar

    I don’t buy indexes. I buy companies.

    • DrOtto

I did a combination of both and my individual picks routinely out did my passive index holdings, but now that I’ve essentially hit my retirement goal, I’m transitioning to indexes and cash since I’m trying to build a year of income in cash before calling it quits I can’t take the big swings like I used to.

    • Fourscore

I’m a mutual funds guy. Seems to be working.

Now I’m trying to get everything into an up-date-trust. Those guys don’t work for free either. I’m hoping I’m close to done.

  15. The Late P Brooks

It’s like a streaming subscription – it’s not for your benefit, it’s for theirs.

Speaking of which, I happened to be looking the other day. What could possibly make a streaming service worth a hundred bucks or more per month?

    • rhywun

That’s more than I pay for cable and internet combined. Which has everything I watch except the premium movie channels and the more niche sports channels.

Yeah, I don’t have any of the streams but I’m old and on my own and there’s nothing compelling for me there.

  16. Derpetologist

I think Trump was looking to repeat the success(?) of Venezuela with Iran. Unfortunately, by bombing Iran, he made every Iranian who protested the regime look like an idiot. Sooner or later, Iran will test a nuclear weapon which will make the US and Trump look even more foolish. Every country that wants to be free of US interference has a very strong incentive to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran has grassroots opposition to the regime, but no leaders. All of them were systematically imprisoned, exiled, or killed long ago. The regular military can’t launch a coup because the IRGC is loyal to the mullahs and is stronger.

Trump’s best move at this point is to declare victory and stop the bombing, but I don’t think he will do that.

    • Drake

I thought that’s where he was going this morning. Then Senators coming out of a DoD briefing today think he’s serious about ground troops.

Who knows? Maybe there’s a plan under all the bs.

      • Fourscore

I get the impression that even FOX News is beginning to have questions.

    • Suthenboy

      Wow. Is that real?

      • Sensei

Yes. They deleted it after being called out on it.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I bet the original version said “abnormally warm weather due to climate change”, but the editor made them take out the climate change reference and didn’t want to be bothered to fix the rest.

      • rhywun

        Incredible, isn’t it?

      • Suthenboy

        That is really something.
“That lie was too blatant even for our audience. We are not ashamed but at least we know the limits on the horseshit we can get away with.”

    • EvilSheldon

I’m sorry about that. But hey, at least they aren’t Kawasakis!

      • Bobarian LMD

I love kawasaki motor in my zero turn. Better torque and fuel economy than the B&S in my last mower.

  17. The Late P Brooks

    Fantasists

World leaders have tried and failed to curb climate change by appealing to nations to act for the common good. Now, the Iran war and its costly energy crunch have some experts wondering if selfishness and nationalism may be a more likely way to save the planet, by boosting support for homegrown renewables over imported fossil fuels.

Bombed refineries, disrupted shipping channels for oil and liquefied natural gas and skyrocketing fuel prices should point even the most reluctant leaders to a cleaner fossil free future, hope some experts.

But others are dismissive, noting the same speculation emerged, and then quickly flopped, as recently as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That prompted some European nations to replace gas with even dirtier coal.

“Just wishful thinking,” said Stanford University climate scientist Rob Jackson, who tracks global emissions of carbon dioxide.

Whycome nobody listen to salvationist eggheads?

    • rhywun

      Bomb Iran for Gaia!

      Well… that’s a new twist.

the same speculation emerged, and then quickly flopped, as recently as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That prompted some European nations to replace gas with even dirtier coal

If only Europeans would just toss themselves off bridges in greater numbers, the rise of the oceans would begin to slow and our planet would began to heal.

      • Bobarian LMD

If they throw themselves off the bridge, they’ll displace water and cause the tide to rise.

        Composting.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

But will they all yell “Kelp!” after hitting the water?

    • Beau Knott

This nicely covers some of the other fantasist elements in ‘energy independence through “renewables”.’

    • Suthenboy

Let me guess…this Jackson fellow gets paid to do that.

*at least not until batteries make a giant leap in charge density or a huge drop in weight

If somebody has invented an ultralightweight battery, I missed the announcement.

    • Suthenboy

There is a relationship between protons and electrons. We can overcome it.

*I am picturing Manbearpig raising both arms to part a sea of….oil?…Moses style. Instead of a staff he has one of those little sparkly fairy wands, the kind two year old girls get on their birthday*

The whole thing is so absurd all of mankind should be ashamed.

  19. UnCivilServant

So, apparently, I didn’t buy a buffer tube. So I ordered one. In the paperwork it’s marked as a “Restricted Firearm Part”. Of all the things in this build, I am most confident I could make a buffer tube. It’s a metal tube closed on one end and threaded on the other. Doesn’t exactly take a master machinist to put together.

    • UnCivilServant

Yes, I know a lot have a ‘rail’ for the multiple positions of adjustable stocks to click into. But that’s an optional feature.

    • EvilSheldon

I’m gonna go ahead and demand pics of the finished product. When it’s finished.

      • UnCivilServant

I was planning to write something up talking about the stupid rules written by stupid people.

      • Suthenboy

        It is spelled e-v-i-l .
Of course stupid, insane and evil come as a set, just different mixes of each.

  20. PieInTheSky

x these days is full of discussions about braless au pairs and i do not see anything about it here.

    • Suthenboy

Now see….I wasn’t going to say that.

  21. The Late P Brooks

Braless au pairs? This looks like a job for Sydney Sweeney.

  22. The Late P Brooks

This nicely covers some of the other fantasist elements in ‘energy independence through “renewables”.’

We all know those “renewable” energy generators come straight out of the magic hat.

  23. The Late P Brooks

“lowest snowfall levels in more than 30 years ”

They can’t go back forty years, because that will put them in the “this is end of winter as we know it” years.
