Swiss has announced that it is Slim Pickens in the post hopper. So this is an Emergency Post.

If you are seeing this, the posts are at a critical level. Please, stop me from posting crap. Post something people actually want to read. For now, enjoy the best memes from the last meme war I had with Bethannica, one of our once proud commenters, now a damn dirty lurker:

Remember, where there is a a post emergency you will find….

Please write soon. Before I have to post again.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Thanks to those who have contributed (especially R.J., as he has managed to help despite being ever so jammed up with things to do) – I can get us through this week and next. I will be setting a new time slot, on Sunday late afternoon, for UCS’ next series of reviews.

    Emergency

The crew of a cargo ship carrying 3,000 vehicles to Mexico, including 800 electric vehicles, abandoned ship after they could not control a fire aboard the vessel in waters off Alaska’s Aleutian island chain.

A large plume of smoke was initially seen at the ship’s stern coming from the deck loaded with electric vehicles Tuesday, according to U.S. Coast Guard photos and a Wednesday statement from the ship’s management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime.

    ——-

The crew initiated emergency firefighting procedures with the ship’s onboard fire suppression system. But they were unable bring the flames under control.

Spontaneous combustion engines are the future!

      Bonus – Chinese made EVs.

    • EvilSheldon

Alkali fires are no fucking joke. That steel-hulled cargo carrier may well burn to the waterline.

      • Suthenboy

        And sink.
Are the watermelons going to protest about the environmental damage? Should be easy enough to change their signs from Stop Oil to Stop Electric.

โ€œThere may be hard calls to make in policing that rule, but this is not one,โ€ she wrote.

Unless you are the SC of Wisconsin. It’s a tough call for them.

Oh? What the wise Latina is missing is that every single 2A case that has come before them is an even bigger slam dunk but they dont seem to be able to manage that. It’s almost like they are selective in their interpretation of law. Most of the time the SC looks like a panel of Humpty dumptys to me.

    This just in

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed fellow Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as her first choice for New York City mayor, putting her high-profile mark on a primary where he has surged among progressives.

The lefty firebrand unveiled her preferred slate in the June 24 primary in an interview Thursday with The New York Times. She said she will rank Adrienne Adams, Brad Lander, Scott Stringer and Zellnor Myrie in that order after Mamdani. Adams, the City Council speaker, was also endorsed Thursday by Rep. Yvette Clarke as her No. 1 choice, POLITICO reports exclusively.

โ€œAssemblymember Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack,โ€ Ocasio-Cortez told the Times of the candidate whose district and platform overlaps with hers. โ€œIn the final stretch of the race, we need to get very real about that.โ€

Ocasio-Cortezโ€™s endorsement is among the most highly sought for liberal Democrats nationwide. The Bronx and Queens House member, whose national reach has widely expanded since her hometownโ€™s last race for mayor, will help Mamdani present himself even more clearly as the favorite among the non-Cuomo contenders.

He can save NYC from the rapacious fascist oligarchs and make it a truly wonderful place to live and work.

Update: My mom has an apartment and is moving in on June 26.

My capacity for logistics has been stretched to maximum this year, and it’s not even close to over with.

    • The Other Kevin

Thanks for that little glimmer of hope. I love that things are moving forward for you. We’ve decided to prioritize getting my oldest her own place over getting a car. Our town has a nice cheap little bus service that she can use to get around. She’s not happy about that plan, but oh well. Middle kid has somehow survived a few years walking and biking around town.

      • Mojeaux

That’s probably a good idea. Walking everywhere (probably should think about a bike also) will be very beneficial.

    • Ted S.

How long until Cunty Aunt Susie is dragged kicking and screaming out of the old place?

    • ron73440

      Awesome to hear Moj.

The house sale is still on schedule?

      • Mojeaux

House is under contract, but doesn’t close until July 2.

It was originally to close on June 2 and the buyers had offered to allow Susie and Millie to live there until July 2 free of charge (well, $1,500 refundable deposit).

Susie said, “I need to sleep on this. I don’t want to make any rash decisions.”

Susie’s daughter [Heather] said, “What’s to think about? You get your money, you get to live rent-free for a month, and have that whole month to find a place to live and buy if you want to.”

Next day, Susie decides that “I’m uncomfortable living in a house someone else owns, so I want to close on July 2.” ๐Ÿค”

Heather’s like, “Uh, that means you won’t have any money to find a new place to live.”

        Susie: [Stubborn silence.]

Heather went home. I like to imagine she threw up her hands.

SOOOOOOO Susie had the closing date changed from June 2 to July 2, and told Mom if she didn’t agree, MOM was the one holding things up. ๐Ÿ™„

Her wants (besides keeping the house):

โ†’ buy a house within their ward (congregational) boundaries
        โ†’ refusal to rent

        Her problems:

โ†’ there are no houses for sale within the ward boundaries
โ†’ the few houses available for sale in the general vicinity are way above what she can afford
โ†’ a bank is probably not going to give an 80yo woman with no collateral, a house under contract, with insufficient income to support a mortgage for what prices are around here now
โ†’ she is solidly refusing to believe any of this (as per usual)

This woman lives in some la la land I don’t understand. In 80 years, has she NEVER been stymied by the world in general and other people in particular?

Anyway, at the beginning of all this Millie was fussing about what to do about all their stuff. They were going to sort through it and take what they want and take the rest to Goodwill.

I told her to hire an estate sale company, let them catalog it all, take what you want to keep, let them sell what you don’t want to keep, and they’ll haul the rest off and give you a check.

“NO.” ๐Ÿ˜’ Gee, could you have THOUGHT about that for more than a millisecond?

Anyway, this is how they’ve both conducted this entire affair, and I honestly am completely discombobulated by this refusal of two very old women to conform their plans and expectations to reality. They can be looking straight at a Zillow listing and not believe that price applies to them, then be all *shocked Pikachu* when someone tells them it DOES, and then whine about “why weren’t we told???”.

Given my numerous distractions this morning I was unable to comment on –

Tranny’s being fans of communism. They think communism will advance their agenda. It wont. It is the other way about. If the commies prevail the trannies will be the first ones shot.

Violence against trannies….they dont happen to mention in the report who is committing these atrocities? They never do. Three guesses who it is 99.999% of the time.

There was one more but I forgot what it is. I am distracted with my scheme to make a lemon-basil cream sauce with asparagus and chicken. I think I am low on heavy cream.

This is one more way in which China is playing us, and one of the reasons why some people want to ban TikTok. In China they aggressively censor pro-trans content, and push math and science videos to their kids. Meanwhile in America they promote trans content and other things that mess with our society.

I don’t think China wants to take us over, they just want to erode our society so they can be the only super power. And there are plenty of dumb Americans to go along with that plan.

Ocasio-Cortez, 35, and Mamdani, 33, share progressive values in addition to the parts of Queens they represent. She also represents parts of the Bronx. He has rallied left-leaning, younger voters with his call for free and fast bus service, a freeze on the rent and a push to tax the wealthy.

One of the things that sucks about practical rifle training – if I shoot my AR15 at the same pace I shoot my pistols, I’ll damage it in short order just by getting it heat-soaked.

I have two identical copies of all my match and carry guns, so that if one of them breaks I’m not out a month of competition or practice getting it fixed. For rifles, I’m coming around to the belief that you need to have two identical training rifles so that you can put 4-5 magazines through one, then switch to the other one while letting the other one cool down.

  9. ron73440

I will carry my good news from this morning over here:

I am so tired of being in this hospital

So far no bleeding, but I have been living off of broth and jello for the last few days

They are giving me soup for lunch and if I have no problems, a regular dinner

If there are no problems a couple hours after dinner I can go home tonight

    • ron73440

      Also, a question:

Would Goody’s headache powder cause colon bleeding?

I rinse my nose daily with NeilMed sinus rinse, but still get sinus headaches often.

Goody’s is the only thing that can handle those and while I don’t exceed the max dose, I do take it probably 3-5 days a month.

      • EvilSheldon

Goody’s is Acetaminophen and aspirin, and those are both blood thinners. It probably wouldn’t have caused the bleeding, but it could have contributed or made it worse.

      • kinnath

        Ingredient Purpose
        Acetaminophen 260 mg Pain reliever
Aspirin (NSAID)* 520 mg Pain reliever
Caffeine 32.5 mg Pain reliever aid

        Asprin perhaps

      • ron73440

It does list stomach bleeding as a side effect, but not colon bleeding.

        Maybe that’s a distinction without a difference.

      • Sensei

        Ingredient Purpose
        Acetaminophen 260 mg Pain reliever
Aspirin (NSAID)* 520 mg Pain reliever
Caffeine 32.5 mg Pain reliever aid

I know aspirin can cause stomach bleeding. I don’t know about further down the GI tract. It’s also a blood thinner so not ideal if you are bleeding.

      • kinnath

        Stomach bleeding warning:

This product contains an NSAID, which may cause severe stomach bleeding. The chance is higher if you:

        Are age 60 or older
Have had stomach ulcers or bleeding problems
Take a blood-thinning (anticoagulant) or steroid drug
Take other drugs containing prescription or non-prescription NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or others)
Have 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day while using this product
Take more or for a longer time than directed

      • Beau Knott

In my decidedly not-an-expert opinion, 3-5 times a month seems unlikely to cause problems. But if it’s an NSAID or compounded with NSAIDs, it’s certainly possible. NSAIDS are hell on the digestive tract, sadly. Tylenol is a piss-poor substitute, but it’s the only alternative. It has its own problems, too.

      • EvilSheldon

“Tylenol is a piss-poor substitute, but itโ€™s the only alternative. It has its own problems, too.”

Yeah, like if you enjoy a drink, you should not be using Tylenol. That combination badly fucks up your liver.

Whisky and opiates are the only really safe and healthy painkillers. Although probably not at the same time.

      • ron73440

I know it might not be the cause at all, but I might just deal with the pain of my headaches from now on.

This was a such a horrific experience I have no desire to repeat.

      • Suthenboy

My advice, for what it is worth: Stop taking it.
At your age that is too high a dose.
I have RA and took NSAIDs for years. I ended up with some serious gut bleeding having the same symptoms you are having and the same treatment. At one point the doc told me between the liver damage and the bleeding it was a toss up as to whether I made it or not.

*disclaimer – alcohol contributed to the problem.

      • ron73440

        Stop taking it.
At your age that is too high a dose.

        That’s about where I am.

They live like royalty and contribute exactly nothing to society. They are parasites and a waste of skin.

  13. The Late P Brooks

What if he’s not completely crazy?

What the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found in one report was that recently passed legislation in the House of Representatives is set to increase deficits by $2.4 trillion over the next decade if it is signed into law.

The second report examined Trump’s tariffs and found they could reduce primary deficits by $2.8 trillion over that same time frame โ€” but with a significant assumption that current duties stay constant and in place even after Trump is scheduled to leave office.

It’s significant assumptions all the way down.

But at least they admit it could be a legitimate source of revenue, instead of reflexively shrieking about the end of the world as we know it.

    • The Other Kevin

The problem is always that these are always multi-year estimates, and you are virtually guaranteed a future administration isn’t going to stick to the plan.

      • Rat on a train

CBO, what if we backloaded the difficult steps to year 10?

      • ron73440

My favorite was 10 years of revenue balanced against 5 years of estimated expenditures so they could say ObamaCare was revenue neutral.

      • Rat on a train

I believe the imbalance was to get Ocare under $1T over the decade. It also assumed many taxes that were never implemented or were repealed (Cadillac plans, medical devices, penaltax, …).

      • kinnath

They made Ocare work by FedGov taking over the student loan program and using that “income” to balance the costs of Ocare.

    • Suthenboy

What I have found is that all talk like that and all of those numbers signify nothing. Zero. Nada. You might as well listen to a mule bellow.

      • The Other Kevin

If they cut the budget by $1T this year and for the next 3 years, that matters. Outside of that, as you said, it’s nothing.

      • Rat on a train

The CBO is GIGO. If you tell them to assume something, they do. They overestimate revenue and costs because they don’t factor in behavior.

      • Sensei

Rat – Exactly. And if Congress stipulates a number they generally accept it with little to no pushback.

        For example a 95% confidence interval results in X = $100m + – $25m standard deviation

That means for a revenue item you use $125m and for an expense number $75m. Both point estimates are equally valid, but it is absolutely unrealistic.

    • Jarflax

Tariffs will in theory reduce imports and generate revenue, but they can only do one in inverse proportion to how well they do the other, and, just like every manipulation of the market by the left, the real devil is in the unseen consequences.

  14. Suthenboy

I would also like to toss in that Slim Pickens is someone I admire. One of his hobbies was making black powder rifles…i.e. gunsmithing and he was quite good at it. Every great once in a while I notice one come up for sale. I dont see any just now.
