Birthdays: April 28 (probably should have had this one in my last set of links), a great singer from perhaps my favorite Australian musical act of all time; April 30, one of the best wicket-keepers of all time; May 5, one of the toughest Australian Rules players of all time, who suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in this tackle but played out the game;
This week in Antipodean history (in UCS approved order):
- 1813, May 11: explorers Blaxland, Wentworth, and Lawson set out on the expedition which opened some of the most productive land in the world to agriculture and sheep-raising.
- 1820, May 3: first European plough used in New Zealand
- 1829, May 2: Swan River Colony (now Western Australia) established.
- 1897, May 3: first female doctor registered in New Zealand
- 1897, May 10: first female barrister/solicitor in New Zealand appointed.
- 1945, May 11: Charles Upham receives his first Victoria Cross (I wrote about Upham a few years back).
- 1927, May 9: Australia’s imperial capital officially open for business
- 1955, May 1: first New Zealand combat airstrike since the end of WWII, as part of the Malaya “Emergency.”
- 1964, May 2: last electric tram runs in New Zealand.
- 1988, May 9: new parliament house opened in Australia
- 1995, May 13: New Zealand yacht Black Magic wins the America’s Cup.
Antipodean News:
- New Plymouth has California disease, and is contemplating odd solutions
- Climate change, New Zealand style.
- At least one guy criticizes the nanny state
- Idiots in Cars, New Zealand style
- It’s a risk they take, but still a tragedy.
- As Spud posted on Saturday, Australia returned a left-of-center government in a landslide. If you want to kill a few brain cells, try this page. There are no end of reasons being proffered for the result (Trump is one). I have no special insights but, when the opposition claims they can manage the economy better by spending the same amount of money on different things, well, not much of a choice. Added benefit: because the Libs got skunked, there would have been pressure on their leader to stand aside but the added bonus is he lost his seat in Parliament. So, we get a leadership contest. These are usually more vicious than the regular election (yes, I know, parliamentary systems are dumb).
- In news that should surprise, well, nobody hybrid vehicle sales slump. Any guesses as to why?
- Higher ed administrators in Australia are learning from their American counterparts.
- Wanna buy a farm? (bigger than Rhode Island)
Today’s music, is from the first birthday boy’s second album. Voted the third-most Australian song of all time (and one of my all-time favorite lyrics, “He believes in God and Elvis, he gets out when he can, he did his time in Vietnam, still mad at Uncle Sam”).

But coalition partner ACT says the proposal is hastily drafted, simplistic and unworkable.
When has that ever proven to be an impediment?
Police confirmed a vehicle came off the road on Mill Rd, hit a fence and then went through the roof of a house at high speed.
Police told Ruby they thought the car was going at least 180km/h at the time of the crash.

Renowned Northern Territory cattle station Benmara has been listed for sale on behalf of Hartree Partners with price expectations of around $40 million.
That’s only about $25 million in USD.
I looked it up on a map. It’s kinda isolated. Probably a good compound location.
“Do you want the government to solve every problem?”
Is this a trick question?
Probably a better question is “do I think they can solve any?”
Cause if they could solve every problem.. I guess great. Be my guest.
1945, May 11: Charles Upham receives his first Victoria Cross
As opposed to that weasel, CPL Timothy Upham.
“Why American automakers can’t make cheap cars.”
Can’t, or won’t?
Honest answer- they have intentionally shifted from volume to margins. Which is nice, nd all, but eventually they are going to find out they have slit their own throats.
Nice of you to consider the hemispherically challenged.
They are turning cars in to fucking smart phones. High tech, high gloss, function be damned.

How’s the Southern Cross from there?

Higher ed administrators in Australia are learning from their American counterparts.
There should be a strict pay scale. No university president should make more than ten times what an assistant professor makes. That seems fair to me.
We tried solving that problem by creating a strict pay scale for state employees….then we find out the president boss lady at LPB is raking in 880,000/yr.
Benmara station…not like the surface of the moon as I suspected but not far off either. How many acres needed for one cow?
Here we measure cows per acre. Plus…Australia. No thanks.

When will Trump declare that it’s because of him an American Pope has been selected?
10… 9… 8… 7…
Why not? He’d be blamed if an American wasn’t selected.

The Mises Institute release a short video on REAL ID not being good.
It’s REAL bad?
I seem to remember some kind of referendum on the Real ID thing a few years back and they were told “not no but fuck no” and now all of a sudden here it is.
Do I remember incorrectly?
I don’t recall ever having the opportunity to express my opinion about it in the form of a vote.
Pleb!
Pretty sure this was originally supposed to be implemented decades ago.
Referendum on REAL ID? I don’t remember any such thing.
I remember lots of states passing resolutions opposing REAL ID. I think most states did.
DEG: Yes, maybe that is what I remember. No matter, they were told NO.
No matter, they were told NO.
I don’t think that’s accurate. I believe they were told your citizens won’t be able to access any federal facilities or things we control, even if they’re paying for all of it. And that’s a lot of nice funding you got there; would be unfortunate if anything were to happen to it.
And, as we all know, that stick of funding and services withheld at the the federal level is perfectly great and grand. In certain circumstances. For certain purposes. Other purposes or circumstances? Why that’d just be an assault on democracy, apple pie, and your mom’s hoo-haa.
They just gave me one when I renewed my license.
I was duped!!!
I will get one when I renew even though I already have an alternate from TSA’s list of acceptable identification.
A study has found New Zealand’s slice of the ocean is absorbing more heat than any other.
Mount Doom is, like, right in the neighborhood.
I thought the extra heat in the ocean was hiding in deep water?
“all the heat that people are pumping into the climate system” – Yeah. I was raised on a farm dude. You seem to think I dont know horseshit when I smell it.
Is this an appropriate occasion for ‘Oh NO! Anyway….’ ?
Utah Mammoth.
I do like the logo.

Shooter Glibs, I need some advice.
I have acquired a shooting belt, some single stack magazine holders that fit my 1911 mags and a temporary holster into which the 1911 fits. There is one problem – when I try to draw the pistol, the holster clip comes off the belt rather than giving up the pistol.
It will be a few weeks before my properly fit holster that can’t be pulled off the belt arrives. Is there an easy fix to the holster not giving up the pistol Other than buying a new holster?
If this is for a competition rig, adjust the holster retention to the lowest setting possible. You are (hopefully) not going to be defending gun grabs at the steel match.
I can offer better advice with a picture of the holster and belt, where they attach.
I just found the solution. I was able to remove the offending clip and thread the belt through the nylon band where the clip was attached to the holster originally. Now it can’t come off the belt whilt the belt is fastened. Draws much easier now.
Have they considered not letting bums camp in public? It feels like that used to work.
Recent history has me wondering if there is something inherent in the process that just results in dumb-shit lefties floating to the top.
Yes. It’s a government.
Is there an easy fix to the holster not giving up the pistol Other than buying a new holster?
Could you attach the holster to the belt with something like tyraps so it can’t come free? Close off the end of the clip so it can’t slip off the belt?
Watching the latest batch of keffiyeh fans playing hooky at Columbia and once again I find it interesting that they are almost 100% females.
There were 78. I’m surprised.
Out of what 20,000 or more students? Getting a bit tiresome at these tiny groups of Marxists attracting so much attention – it’s almost like the MSM approve.
What you did there. It was understood. And they were probably virgins too.
Quillette did a piece on the radicalization of young women.
I am reminded of that charming young lady Linda Sarsour who frequently during warm months led crowds in aggressive chanting, around the corner from where I lived in NYC for many years.
Oct. 7 happened weeks after I moved upstate and I could not be happier to not be around that anymore.
Meanwhile. NYT
Didnt all the ones from last time get arrested? Is this a new batch or same ones released and back again?
My guess, marxist/Soros DA cut them all loose five mins after booking.
“For NVES to succeed, it must be supported by holistic policy settings that assist consumers to move to zero and low-emission technologies, including continued investment in recharging infrastructure,” Mr Weber said.
“In order to continue to signal our obvious virtue, we must throw good taxpayer money after bad.” — Fixed it for ’em.
I remember the East German engineer that helped design the Berlin Wall. When asked why he did it – “We had to keep people in. We were losing too many people to the west. We had to keep them here to show them that communism works.” <— This as he way laying in his death bed after the collapse of east Germany and the fall of the wall.
For NVES to succeed…policy settings to 'assist' customers….Yeah. I know what that means. In order for this commie bullshit to succeed we have to force people to use it. Now, define 'succeed'.
"Everybody is using it!"
"Yeah but you said you would shoot them if they dont"
"We are assisting them to choose with holistic policy incentives"
We here have been repeating ourselves for months or more about waste and corruption. Gets dull. Needs documenting though.
In order for us to continue our racket, that is.

Pope Leo agrees. Apparently he is cast from the same mold as Francis.
But he won’t have an accent…?

So how does Real ID not contraveneh the 10th Amendment? (Rhetorical at this point; no need to supply all the precedents and other spurious arguments.)
I dunno but when I went to apply for one, they told me I had to travel to an office an hour away to interview for it.
I said fuck that, and months later the paper is claiming that my local office will handle it.
Said fuck it again. I have to fly, I’ll think about it.
What I’m curious about is the requirement at fed offices. That seems blatantly unlawful to me. How am I supposed to allow muh government to service me if I can’t approach it?
I think there are exemptions for courthouses and day to day government operations places, could be wrong though.
lol Of course.
Almost like the whole thing is a joke.
I’ve *heard* (no guarantee of accuracy) that you can still fly without one but you’ll just be subject to “extra screening” (hope you brought your own lube).
Rhy, doesn’t NY DMV handle it?
Apparently some NYS DMV offices are more equal than others.
It may already have happened, but I’d love to get a readback from the Cathglibs on Neo Pope Leo.
Is the Church going to start paying for child gender surgeries? Are we expected to give up Western Civilization for the sake of Gaia and BIPOC immigrants?
Will Lizzo be playing a Stradivarius with her asshole while Leo is doing lines of a tranny’s tits during his first official Papal orgy?
I’d watch that for a dollar!
$1.25
Inflation.
He seems a bit lefty but less so than Francis.
Still falls for the klimate nonsense but doesn’t care for the gays. Strongly against abortion and capital punishment.
For gun control. 🙄
“gun control”
All that sell your cloak and buy a sword shit doesn’t make the Holy Catholic Church money apparently.
