Don’t Forget Mother’s Day Friday Afternoon Links

FCBD was a success, although the younger nephew slept in and didn’t come along. The elder nephew has decided to try out the old timey candies that were available at the candy store. Next year he may be wanting to do the midnight release, if it happens. This week, the girlfriend and I got to catch Mac Sabbath and run into some old friends. But you lot don’t care about this, so let’s get to the links…

If you’re the one burning books, you’re the asshole.

So, is this raising awareness, or spreading microplastics? I’m not sure which is supposed to be more important.

Fear us! FEAR US!

How dare the Catholic Church say there are things that are more important than the state?

Between this and this, I think I know why conclaves are going faster.

Well, this seems a good use for AI LLMs.

A hard hitting, thought provoking piece.

If this is you’re biggest nightmare, you have a really safe and soft life.

Can’t they just plug into the wall?

Meh.

“When judges act as partisan hacks, it is important to condemn their conduct.”

I blame the [checks notes] parents.

What could possibly go wrong with this?

For the last cocktail in this cycle, we’re going to a nearly forgotten (except the holidays) style of drink: The Flip. These go all the way back to the 1600s, and were originally heated with a hot poker. Now, they’re generally served warm or cold, and include a whole egg in the recipe. The six cocktails I went through these past several weeks were from the book the Cocktail Codex (which I should write up a review on if I can get off my ass). The core concept of the book is that all cocktails can be broken down into variants of six basic cocktails. I have some issue with the way they categorized them (they stated that they were not cocktail historians), but overall it was an interesting book that introduced a couple of concepts to me.

The Flip

  • 2 ounces spirit/fortified wine
  • 2 teaspoons demerara sugar
  • 1 whole egg

Start by chilling a coupe or cocktail glass. Add the ingredients to a shaker (no ice), and dry shake them for 10-15 seconds to combine and froth. Add ice, and shake again to chill. Then double strain into the chilled glass. Double straining (for those unaware) will require two strainers (this should not be a shock). Use your standard hawthorne strainer on the shaker, and run it through a fine mesh strainer. The double strain is used more for drinks with raw egg, dairy, or require brilliant clarity. The double strainer is to clear up any congealed proteins, chunks, or ice bits. It’s not a requirement, but it’s a nice touch to add.

Let’s go into the weekend, and enjoy it.

I really want to like Mac Sabbath but I can’t get past how terrible their singer is.

“If this is You Are biggest nightmare”

What, is this some kind of ironic nightmare?

    • rhywun

You joke now, but the next time you visit a national park and it looks like a KKK convention because Trump canceled diversity – you won’t be joking then.

      • The Other Kevin

It’s amazing how many people still don’t see the clear signs we are living in the second 1939.

      • J. Frank Parnell

First they came for the young adults from diverse backgrounds working summer jobs in national parks…

“How Ohio became a hotbed of white supremacism”

Whew, thanks Ohio. My teammates keep giving me a hard time about the KKK’s history in Indiana.

Got some good news the other day. Our youngest is supposed to be home this week, but the airline offered here a $20 voucher to change her flight to Sunday. Mrs. TOK is not aware of this change, so she’ll get a nice Mother’s Day surprise.

Hope the rest of you have or provide a nice Mother’s Day.

  5. CPRM

What library lets you check out 50 books when you haven’t returned the 50 you already checked out?

    • Rat on a train

They were happy someone was checking out books.

  6. UnCivilServant

I’m going to go off topic early to complain about the fact that there are too many different 1911 ‘standard’ magazines out there. Since the stores want to cater to everybody, they have at most 1-2 of any given standard, or are sold out. Finding the ones that fit mine gets frustrating. That’s before accountging for the 10 Billion 9mms out there flooding the shelves.

    • UnCivilServant

Yes, I know I can buy online – But they’ll arrive too late.

      • Spudalicious

If you want to spend a little bit extra, Wilson Combat mags are the best I own.

    • Suthenboy

this has always been a problem. So many 1911 mags and so many of them almost work in any given pistol.
Buy one, try it. If it works in. your gun go back and get a dozen.
I have a couple of five gallon buckets full of ones that work in the colts, dont work in the timbers and vice versa.

      • UnCivilServant

I know the Sig ones fit, but nobody has more than at most 1 in stock retail. Online, they’ll eventually show up. Test fitting some others at a cooperative store found that, no, they don’t like to fit.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Will it take standard (ha!) Colt magazines?

But, in all seriousness, this should be how to judge any 1911 knock-off: will it take standard off the shelf mags? I have a box full of standard 1911 mags, all of which work on my gun. The mag is the best feature of that model, because it is easy to load and it always works.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Hmmm… doesn’t look like they do, which is weird, at least to me. If they do, let me know, and I will send you a few.

So long as Black people received special consideration, Thomas argued, they would be dismissed as “second rate.”

Behind the scenes, that’s exactly what White House officials said about him.

    Source: trust me bro.

    • The Other Kevin

An anonymous source familiar with the White House’s thinking?

    • juris imprudent

The author of that piece’s wiki bio includes this:

Though being a social liberal, he champions unrestricted freedom of speech for all, including conservatives.

Awfully white of him to be so generous.

  8. JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

That Guardian article is really something.

“Elon Musk and Steve Bannon have taken to Nazi-style salutes in front of large audiences…”

“Members of American white supremacist groups, including Patriot Front and the California-based Rise Above Movement (RAM), have traveled across Europe to take part in public marches and distribute propaganda…”

“A Slovakian teenager who killed two people outside a bar popular with members of Bratislava’s LGBTQ+ community in October 2022 was radicalized in part by California- and Idaho-based leaders…” I remember being in a bar in Bratislava in the 90s where a bunch of skinheads were hanging out with their dog, which they had trained to bark loudly at the word “Gypsy”. I don’t think they needed encouragement from the US.

    • juris imprudent

No one in the world ever did anything bad until Trump and his Nazi minions!!!

  9. The Late P Brooks

As prominent supporters and members of the current administration such as Elon Musk and Steve Bannon have taken to Nazi-style salutes in front of large audiences, the tentacles of a resurgent American white supremacism are stretching around the globe, often with deadly consequences.

    Cut it the fuck out.

  10. Shpip

The boy has shown no immediate symptoms, but Wong and her husband are currently arranging comprehensive medical assessments with pediatric specialists seeking one who will support a claim for delayed neurological, developmental, and physiological effects.

How to go from “briefly annoyed parent” to “chiseler” in one fell swoop.

Someone should tell her that she’s going about this the Wong way.

    • Gender Traitor

If he’s not graduating from high school at the age of 12 with competing full-ride scholarships to Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and CalTech, he was obviously hopelessly incurably brain-damaged by that sip of wine!

    • Suthenboy

      Yep. Parents are grifters.

    • ron73440

If the incentive is there, I am sure she can find a Dr. that will support her claim.

*Spoiler Alert: The incentives are there.

  11. Raven Nation

So many things to say about The Hill piece on Clarence Thomas. But, in case you’re in any doubt as to the author’s credibility:

“And nobody on the Supreme Court got a bigger boost from identity than Thomas. If you don’t believe me, simply listen to the man who chaired his Senate confirmation hearing: “Had Thomas been white, he never would have been nominated,” declared Joe Biden, who would later displace Trump from the White House. “The only reason he is on the court is because he is Black.”

Yeah, if Biden is your source of authority, just give up now.

    • rhywun

      There, I said it.

      Stunning and brave.

    • ron73440

Well, to be sure, he is an expert on unqualified nominees being put forth because of color and or sex.

  12. The Other Kevin

Ladies and gents, we have our next martyr!

“The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove himself from the ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon. He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.”

    • Dr Mossy Lawn

He is maneuvering in the primary for NJ Governor. Needs to show his true blue credentials.

      • DEG

Yep. He’s in the middle of the pack as I understand it and has had a recent drop in polling numbers.

    • rhywun

You’d think the many crime victims in his shithole city would be more worthy of concern than a bunch of illegal aliens but then you wouldn’t be up on today’s Democratic Party.

      • The Other Kevin

I wonder how Trump is polling with minorities these days? This was a big issue with black voters. I can’t imagine shipping off the migrants that were taking over their communities would be unpopular.

  13. The Late P Brooks

    For UnCiv

    1911 mags

    Maybe for the future.

    • UnCivilServant

While 7 is classic, the Sig version came with 8 round magazines. I don’t know if the two are the same height or interchangable.

  14. The Late P Brooks

“The only reason he is on the court is because he is Black.”

Now do Katanga, or whatever she calls herself. Where did they find her?

  15. Suthenboy

Library books – another false flag?

Plastics – How plastic is related to global warming (?) and our health. Our health? Yes, it greatly improves our health in a myriad of ways. At least he got that right. That is what he means, right?

White Supremacy – I got as far as Elon giving the nazi salute and tapped out. I cant believe I made it that far.

Washington has a law requiring priests to rat out from the confessional? Why am I not surprised. Yeah, WA can go fuck themselves.

The conclave thing, I have no idea what that means.

Thomas? Not sure what to make of that. I will take him, DEI or not. That is probably one of the only things Bush did right. I will give him the Iraq war too.

No more smokey bear in a tutu? What ever shall we do?

AI uses electricity. Electricity is generated by fossil fuels. How is that a dirty secret? Now do electric cars.

    • rhywun

Yeah, AI uses a LOT of electricity. Nice to see the left catching up with the reality that unicorn farts aren’t going to cover it.

  16. Grummun

Hilliard, of all places, is an internationally-significant breeding ground for white supremacy?

  17. DEG

The new contextual natural language conversational tool contrasts sharply with manually typing arcane commands into a terminal to analyze crash data, which is the established modus operandi of a professional software engineer, even in 2025. Svnscha goes on to assert that the new open-source tool, available as mcp-windbg on GitHub, can go deep. The AI runs a “simply amazing” array of WinDBG/CDB commands, boosting productivity and eradicating a once tedious task.

    Huh.

mdb had this for years and didn’t need AI for it.

    • DEG

Maybe my memory is fucked and I was thinking of scat. It’s been a long time since I did Solaris kernel work.

  18. rhywun

Should the man return to the Beachwood Library, he will be trespassed.

    Ouch!

  19. rhywun

So, is this raising awareness, or spreading microplastics?

I appreciate people who make it immediately aware that they are an asshole so I don’t have to waste my time acknowledging them.

  20. The Late P Brooks

While 7 is classic, the Sig version came with 8 round magazines. I don’t know if the two are the same height or interchangable.

Sarco has 8 (and 15) round mags. Series 70 GI stuff. The 8 rd mags just hang out of the mag well.

  21. The Late P Brooks

We should ask AI how to power AI data processors.

    • UnCivilServant

      Turn humans into bioreactors.

      • rhywun

Yeah, I don’t think we’re going to like the answer they give.

      • slumbrew

Yes, machine intelligences would definitely want to maintain billions of humans in some sort of hydroponic setup that couldn’t possibly return more energy than it consumed.

Definitely wouldn’t want to use nuclear power, especially if you DGAF about the waste.

(The plot of that movie doesn’t hold up under the barest scrutiny)

      • UnCivilServant

Some genetic engineering may be required.

Also, LLMs are software, they are not actually intelligent.

      • slumbrew
    • Suthenboy

Trump is a free speech champion? Am I getting that right?

      • Sensei

Certainly more than China’s Winnie the Pooh.

  22. The Late P Brooks

Nowhere is life more U-shaped than in San Francisco. The city’s idealistic youngsters believe that they will start the next big artificial-intelligence company, and are willing to put up with high costs and crime. Successful boomers live in enormous houses in Pacific Heights and sit on company boards. Gen Xers, in the middle, have neither the idealism nor the sinecures. Only 37% are happy with life in San Francisco, compared with 63% of Gen Zers, according to a poll in 2022 by the San Francisco Standard, a local paper. Many have little option but to live in Oakland—the horror!—if they want a big house.

    Move to Austin.

    • UnCivilServant

The commiefornians would rather be robbed and murdered than move to Texas.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

I was robbed and killed 5 minutes after I got back to Ca. Death sure is nice and sunny.

      • UnCivilServant

You can’t fool me – you died from Net Neutrality.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        I got better……

      • Suthenboy

I lost count of all of the things that have killed me. It is getting a bit boring, all this apocalypse and dying stuff.

  23. Yusef drives a Kia

Homeless zombies running the streets.Aren’t gangs wayward dogs coming around to kill your cats? This world’s getting terrible

  24. Ownbestenemy

Got the whitepaper on the FAAs grand plan. Totally disconnected from the pie-in-the-sky and unicorn farts speeches over the past couple days.

The paper really is just a continuation of past projects (that do modernize) and some newer stuff that…stretches the truth of where we are and where want to be.

Overall, this NextGen 2.0, the search for more money and really some much needed upgrades.

    • rhywun

I thought of your post when I happened to catch Fox talking out its ass on this stuff yesterday. One of the painted faces was like, “This computer used to be white… now it’s off-white – that’s how old it is!!”

    • rhywun

      Latin… classy!

  25. creech

I was shocked, on a just completed road trip in eastern Virginia and North Carolina, to not see even one Confederate flag. I guess all the racists moved to Ohio?

    • Nephilium

Well, when I was younger there was an infamous one painted on the roof of a barn visible from I-71. I forget when I first noticed it was gone.

      • rhywun

There was a guy who was briefly famous in my old Brooklyn neighborhood for hanging one on his balcony – it was visible from miles around. Someone managed to get him to talk and I’d swear it was one of us.

  26. Evan from Evansville

Conversation with me and someone in a FB community. Whatcha think?

Lede of his OP: “One of the problems people debating MAGA types (they’re not “conservative”) is that their quips and ignorance is easy and short, while intelligent responses are long and require the other side engage honestly and understand. Upshot: Maga diehards are very hard to reach and aggressively try not to understand. Against this, reason and evidence are difficult prospects.”

Me replying to an agreeing post, rejecting his idea the US is suddenly coming to an end:
    “Trump is a 90s Democrat.
The US is still the largest economy in the world, 3rd most populous nation and 4th largest by size. We have the only Blue Water navy in the world. We’re still a big deal for a reason. Hence, the US $ as a global benchmark.”

Other dude to me: “what aspects of his politics or behaviour makes you say he’s a democrat from the 90’s? do you mean like Bill Clinton?”

Me: “He didn’t start any wars; pro gay marriage WAY before Obama; isn’t anti- abortion (SCOTUS isn’t Trump, and even Ginsburg thought Roe Wade was a bad case for abortion); his boisterous TV personality; he has a different strategy for NAFTA -like trade.

Clinton was solid for 3 reasons: Fall of Soviet Union; rise of internet w econ; AND in ’94? Reps took Congress and Clinton (THANKFULLY) was unable to get much DONE. (No uni healthcare, for example.) Great timing. Great for America. DC isn’t supposed to be overlord of all.

And Dictator Trump? Uh. He’s focused on *cutting* Executive spending and authority. Bastard! Reducing his own power! *GASP! Lefties fret!*”
    —-

I do find it tedious, but it’s a chance to practice boiling thoughts down to target the audience. Poking their cognitive dissonance is a massive plus. So is politeness and clarity.

@Neph: Thanks for taking the time to post links. Much appreciated.
