Save the books pt3. Basin

We Spent 2 weeks with the Hualapai preparing for the next stage of our journey. Again the native Indians’ old lore proved invaluable to the survival of the tribe.

There existed geothermal vents around the big mountain they worship and were able to stay warm and dry, if a bit humid, among the lichen strewn rock of the vents. They had always lived in rough stone low houses so they were adapted, say, ready for the troubles. After the exchange of trade goods we learned more of the road ahead.

Until now we had traveled on broken interstate highways but the next step we needed to keep to old trails to avoid poachers. That’s when we learned the fate of the grand canyon.

It was thought to be a great subsidence on the north rim that tore a volcanic rift through the heart of the canyon, spilling magma across the northern basin.

We were ready, our travois and our unhappy mules hitched up, food, clothing and an old timer for a guide, Lasky he was called. He said he grew up in these parts and knew how to get us there so we trusted him, as if we had a choice. Of the few bits of laughter we had were the names of our mules, the Hualapai still can laugh.

We needed to travel to Williams fort at the Hualapai border and head north, close to the great magma lake, a total of two more weeks into the unknown, and hope we make Hopi territory alive. And so we left on a dim morning, into the hills and crags that paralleled I-40. Some of the native plants were doing quite well in the dim, although the once green cactus had turned a pale lavender with the lack of sun, the constant wet was a boon for growth, life finds a way.

We arrived in Williams cold wet and tired. The locals welcomed us with words of warning.

Flagstaff mt. had subsided to the south and was impassable and therefore we had to travel much closer than we hoped to the lake.Lasky said he knew a way, close to the mountain yet far enough away from the hell lake. I was dubious but as the leader my folks would back my play.We set out tomorrow.

      Guessing they want a cut.

      • Brochettaward

That’s usually how these things work.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

As of 2027, they wil have bigger problems….

  1. Brochettaward

Don’t think this has been discussed here. Israel accused of “colluding” to get Trump elected.

I’m rather certain Trump is bought and paid for by the Israelis and that they have a shit ton of dirt on him at a minimum. Real dirt, and not the Russian pee-tape variety that our retarded intel agencies were spreading.

That said, if there’s a narrative I want to die, it’s this notion that there is something abnormal with foreign “interference” in our elections. This shit has always been going on throughout our history and we do the same everywhere there’s a ballot cast.

I’m hoping Trump stays the hell out of the Israel-Iran affair. Let Israel do their thing, bluff a show of force whatever. But stay the hell out of it. When Tulsi Gabbard gets in front of the cameras and says Iran isn’t close to getting nukes, it’s pretty obvious to me it’s a bad look for the America first guy to once again put Israel first.

Iran getting nukes is an existential threat to Israel. But I wager this has more to do with Israel trying to cut off the Iran spigot to their enemies in Palestine. This isn’t our fight.

    • Brochettaward

Also, the story above, if true, makes it laughably obvious how superior Israel’s intelligence agencies are than our three letter agencies. When is the last time you saw our intelligence agencies ahead of the enemy? Or do anything right?

      • Derpetologist

Meh, the Israelis got caught with their yarmulkes off on October 7th. Also, the last great Israeli spy was captured by the Syrians and publicly executed.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eli_Cohen

They’re not better than our guys by much, just way more aggressive, and have better old-fashioned tradecraft. We Americans rely too much on more money, manpower, and technology.

Israeli kill team caught on camera during assassination operation in Dubai:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi5ikOvO7QY

      • Brochettaward

Did they get caught off guard? They had the intelligence supposedly for years that they would be attacked that way, and it was dismissed according to the official story. No shortage of people who think it was intentionally allowed.

      • Brochettaward

I’m not necessarily endorsing this view. But the issue seems to be less of intelligence gathering and more about the analysis of said intelligence.

    • Yusef drives a Kia

Maybe we can lend them a B 2 and let them finish it

    • Ted S.

I think we’ve discussed SugarFreed links before.

      • Brochettaward

It isn’t really a “new” story. More detailed as most of the media yawned or didn’t care about Israeli interference, but this shit was talked about back in 2020.Which the article touches on.

      • rhywun

        The Nation?

        lol JFC.

      • Brochettaward

Someone sent me the link this morning and I said just about the same thing. But everything in it is entirely plausible.

As for Israel, their involvement in 2016 and support of Trump has been known for years. So if this is all legit, it wouldn’t surprise me at all.

    • The Other Kevin

This is not our fight. This is one of my top 3 issues and it’s not what I voted for. Not one bomb.

      • Brochettaward

I’m curious what percentage of Trump’s base are this way. If they could get away with just bombing Iran, I think a majority would go along and cheer Trump on for succeeding.

I think there’s no stomach with open hostilities with Iran from most of his base. I don’t know if Trump realizes that. His dopey ass actually think he’s the one who “invented” America First. His ego is massive enough to believe that he can sell anything to the rubes who voted for him. We’ll see.

      • Derpetologist

Consider how many bombs were dropped on Vietnam, and yet in the end, they won. The Iranians proved during the war with Iraq they are just as stalwart.

In the early years of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, a pond with several sections was built near an area dedicated to martyrs at the Beheshte Zahra graveyard in Tehran. Its fountain spurted blood. It became known as the “Pond of Blood.” Obviously, it was not actual blood but only red coloring mixed in the water.

The fame of this pond even reached overseas, to the point that foreign journalists would strive to take pictures of it.

We were fighting for “regime change”. Rinse and repeat for a few more decades.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Yep, fuck this shit. I voted for that motherfucker three times and if he gets us mixed up in this in an offensive capacity I hope the orange fool gets impeached again.

    • Derpetologist

Netanyahu recently referred to himself as Trump’s “junior partner”. From what I know of Israeli intelligence, they just don’t have the manpower for such a thing. Besides, AIPAC tilts things enough in their favor anyway.

I was briefed at NSA that there are probably spies (Russian, Chinese, Israeli, Iranian) in town , so be careful who you talk to and what you say in a bar. If beautiful women don’t normally talk you and now they are, she could be a honey trap. I heard a similar speech from Army counterintelligence at DLI.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iaR3WO71j4

      • Brochettaward

        Manpower for what, specifically?

      • Derpetologist

They don’t have enough linguists and computer experts, among other things. We give them info, and they do the dirty work.

That Hamas guy they whacked in Dubai 15 years ago? Guess who told them where he was.

      • Brochettaward

So you don’t think they could detect Russia’s hacking campaign before us? Or do you doubt the entire story?

      • Brochettaward

It’s also funny because my brother has a theory that Trump is a tool of the deep state at this point. It’s why the assassination attempt was swept under the rug and so little is known about the would-be-assassin.

If Trump is now owned by the intel agencies, some things start to make sense. I think the truth is probably a lot more straight forward and that Trump and his pro-military persona prevent him from seriously attacking the main instruments of the deep state in the first place.

      • Derpetologist

The Israelis have many enemies, and Russia is way down the list. Their tech guys are as good as NSA but like I said, there aren’t nearly enough of them. That’s why they start looking for promising recruits in junior high.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_8200

Like I said some time ago, I met some ISNU guys who came to my NSA section to brief us on all the cool tricks they’d cooked up. Even so, they relied on NSA Arabic linguists to get things done.

I’m mostly pro-Israel, though they’re basically the 51st state, and an increasingly costly outpost to defend. America should have been more welcoming to Holocaust survivors and the pre-war Jewish refugees. They’d be happier in Brooklyn, I think.

Too late for that. The Israelis will fight to the last man if they have to. But they can’t do that if we withdraw our support.

    • The Other Kevin

One more thing about this… There was a graph going around last week about how there is more diversity of thought on the right vs the left. Here’s your proof. They don’t have disagreements like this on the left.

  2. Derpetologist

The world didn’t end when the USSR got the bomb. Ditto for China, Pakistan, and North Korea.

So I’m not really worried if Iran or any other country gets it. It seems that nuclear weapons help keep the peace.

Nuclear weapon design is not hard. Getting enough fissile material is.

The forbidden joke in Iran was: Khomeini thinks martyrdom is great…for other people.

Iran’s ruling class is not suicidal, though they encourage their people to be:

There was a group of Iranian units in that war called pasdaran, which means boys in Farsi.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP8YSC7_mD0

Sorry, neither Americans nor Israelis will send boys into combat. I just don’t see that happening. And that’s a good thing.

      • Derpetologist

Correction: pasdar means guardian, not boy

My bad. This is what happens when an Arabic linguist tries to wing it with Farsi. Pasran, however, does mean boys in Farsi. Hence my confusion.

Fun fact: the Sepoy Muntiny of India is based on a garbling of the Hindi word sepahi. In Hindi, it means soldier, but it means army in Farsi. Hindi, Farsi, and Urdu have many words in common.

Hindi, Farsi, and Urdu have many words in common.

I’d love to sit down and learn one of those someday.

      • Derpetologist

Go for Farsi, since Urdu, Pashto, and Arabic use the same alphabet. Also, Dari, the common language of Afghanistan, is almost the same as Farsi.

All the Farsi linguists I knew easily passed the test for Dari.

I introduced my mother to Tubi as soon as we got her home from the hospital (had a TV on the wall before she got here). She absolutely LOVES Tubi. She burned through Hunter and now she’s on Scarecrow and Mrs. King.

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/police-question-2-armed-peacekeepers-salt-lake-citys/story?id=122910671

Salt Lake City police are investigating the roles of two self-described “peacekeepers” following a fatal shooting at Saturday’s protest that left one person dead and another injured, raising questions about unauthorized security at public demonstrations.

The two men, who were wearing yellow “high visibility” vests during the incident, were questioned and released as investigators work to determine whether they were appointed by protest organizers, volunteered or were self-appointed.

Neither individual has current or former law enforcement experience, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD).

    • kinnath

According to police, there was no record in the event’s permit indicating the presence of organized or armed security, and investigators are still working to determine the total number of “peacekeepers” present at the rally.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

It does seem like the fuzz would want to figure out who they were and in what capacity they were ther before they let them go on their merry way, especially since they unalived an uninvolved bystander. Weird story.

    • Akira

In high school (probably 2005 or so) for one of those “present a viewpoint” assignments, I got assigned to argue “marijuana should be legalized”. It was probably the one time I actually tried hard on a school assignment because I was quite a big fan of marijuana at the time.

In doing all that research, I was really shocked by how much more dangerous prescription drugs can be (particularly psych meds) and it was one of the big moments of “oh my god, the government LIED to me”.

I went home from school that day and smoked a fat doob.

Mornin, GT. Today is recycling day, on which I am tasked with taking the cardboard and paper to the recycling center, from where they will be carted to a landfill in some remote location (I think they closed Staten Island. Already full of garbage, human and otherwise). Another chilly, rainy day. Is it really June?

      • Gender Traitor

Silly NJ! Here in our little corner of SW OH, we have a separate bin for recyclables, so the trash company (in a separate truck from the trash truck) comes around and takes it to the landfill for us! Convenience for us, and twice as many drivers, so win-win! 😁

      • UnCivilServant

Funny, today is Recycling day here too.

And I forgot to take it to the curb (as far as I have to)

      • Grosspatzer

Oh, I could take it to the curb on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Problem is, Mrs. Patzer gets a lot of boxes from Amazon containing clothing which mostly gets returned to the local Whole Foods because it doesn’t fit. Success ratio for these purchases is about 10%. Two weeks of this would block the entire street. Glass and plastics go out on first and third week.

      • UnCivilServant

        10%?

If I had to return 90% of purchases, I’d find somewhere where I can check the confounding variables first.

Sorry I missed your Sunday night post UCS. One of my favorite recent animes (think I mentioned it here before) is “Gate!: And the JSDF Fought On” – kind of a reverse Isekai concept. After a Fantasy empire invades Tokyo through a portal, the JSDF goes back through the portal and shuts them down hard. Great concept with some fun scenes of Phantoms taking down wyverns, Dark Elves forgetting to check “backblast area clear” with AT rockets, etc. Due to it being a fantasy world, they can’t rely on GPS so they only take older tech through with them – or stuff that they can break down and assemble on the other side of the portal. Also a great commentary on nation-building, JSDF interventions, the media, etc (author is a bit more right-leaning compared to some).

I’ve got a pretty big stack of unwatched stuff from the last couple of years – mostly blu-ray with a few special DVDs. I keep preordering remastered stuff from Deaf Crocodile and other new releases from diabolikdvd or Vinegar Syndrome almost every month. Also…buying more stuff I’ve already seen just to get my hands on hard copies before it gets baudlerized by the next generation, etc. Some items I’m picking up are 4K only…but due to my electricity issues, I’m not sure whether I’ll try getting something compatible here or not – maybe a projector that still has 3D capabilities.

I think I’ve worked around some of my power issues, but I still seem to be randomly popping circuit breakers using devices that worked just fine a day or two ago – pretty frustrating trial and error.

    • UnCivilServant

Have not heard of that one.
