Had an incredible time with The Boys (and parents) at Holiday World. They’ve really upped their game with several new coasters. It’s an astonishing place and a good time had by all. “Thunderbird” is an especially cork-screwy ride, launched with a non-gravity boost of acceleration. We went on that one several times. The line was oddly short on that one, with my honest hypothesis being it was a longer walk away through the forest. (The Indiana woods is a beautiful sight from a few hundred feet. Me and forests, kindred spirits, (for some reason)).
However, just got home and my alarm goes off in five hours. I *may* have caught a wink or two in the car, but the morning will be rough. I wasn’t able to have a single catch-up day with my sleep over my weekend, but it’ll have to do. It is quite nice having a gig in the morning where not too much is at stake.
I’ve got a submission in that touches on a funsy writing project, but I’m also coming ’round to the idea of writing my own story. It’s my most obvious ‘In,’ and it is an interesting one. No worries on the sub, however, as I quite purposefully ensured it’s light, with no medical bummer to sap the reader.
Nice. After 13 months on disability it is really hard for me to show up at work at 8AM every day now ugh.
Tomorrow I get a bonus shift at 8PM too whee! OK it should be brief but at least I was able to argue against a 10PM slot during which I might be uh, less sober.

(We have a running joke with one of the attendants at the grocery’s self-checkout, as we still have to get carded when we buy NA to prove we’re old enough not to drink.)

Carded for NA beer? Speaking of beer, NYC says hold mine. In 2008 I was in the PA bus terminal and went to a kiosk to buy a pack of cigarettes. The nice south Asian gentleman behind the counter asked for ID, pointing to the sign showing that one must be at least 18 to purchase tobacco products. I was 55 at the time, didn’t know whether to be flattered or upset. I settled for flattered.

My father is an engineer. Way back when bell bottoms were cool he worked for Parson’s Mining. He was listening to one of his colleagues complain about having to design parking lots for a project they were working on and he ribbed the guy about shitty parking lots. “Oh yeah? You think it is easy? You do it then. ”
He is a very competent engineer so he took the guy up on it. He had to redo it about five times because he kept screwing it up. Apparently designing the streets and parking lots that everyone complains about is tougher than it looks. There are a million things to take into account that you dont see coming.
I suspect writing law is a lot like that. To compound the problem….look at who has the job.
On the topic of parking lots, I like the feature I’ve seen in a lot of WalMart lots where there’s a walkway between the parking spots so you’re not competing with cars going in and out of the place. So it’s lane – parking spot – walkways – parking spot – lane. They could improve the flow getting in and out though.
It’s hard trying to anticipate and regulate human behavior. You can probably just about manage to get it good enough in very limited areas like, parking lots and building atriums, with a lot of study and experience. As the realm you are trying to manage increases in size, variety, or population arithmetically, the complexity increases exponentially. At the scale of even a small nation it’s beyond any hope of even rough control. To bad no academic or politician is able to understand this.
I’m about goddamn tired of tossing and turning starting at 3am. The temperature regulation in this room sucks. Even a thin blanket = too hot, stick even 1 foot out and freezing. The pillows they have in this bed suck too. They’re either too long (fuck a king size pillow), or too square like a couch pillow.
I just want a decent nights sleep again.
