Return of The Swiss Afternoon Links

Summertime, and the Leben ist einfach.

Back from travel, back to work. That means back to the Links, too. Before I get all that started, have you shopped here? No? Why not?! Take care of that, would ya?

OK, so now for some links;

  • I don’t think 100 FBI agents count as a “flood“. [This link has been OBE – apparently the Guard and DC cops are going Fed as well]
  • Interesting. Will have to keep an eye on this one.
  • The end of an era.
  • Swiss companies are very wary of cutting employment in the CH – you get vilified very quickly if you do.

Music – hearing this, you should think of only one thing.

Too bad my 56k modem is in a closet in California… I’d tip my dial up hat in respect to its passing…. (when I moved out in 2000 before I could get DSL and then cable I was using said modem and a script environment on an OS/2 box to be the provider for the rest of the house… ah nostalgia bait…)

Reacting to an article in today’s NZZ am Sonntag about the capacity expansion in the US, Roche added that it does not foresee any impact of the investments on employees in Switzerland and other countries for now. “We have invested billions of francs in our operations in Switzerland and Europe and will continue to do so.”

I wonder if they’re thinking of running out the clock. I.e. delay enough that Trump is out of office and then never make those capacity expansion in the US.

    • SDF-7

I’m not sure I’m getting much more from that than NATO really, really wants a war with Russia. But I knew that already.

They think they do. I wonder how they’ll feel about it when Poland gets a taste of victory against Russia realizes they can probably restore their old borders against the rest of Europe. Make the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Great Again doesn’t make a a smooth acronym, but I’d giggle as they rolled over Germany.

Temporary? Provisional? What does that mean?

Jaelin Carpenter was stressed. Four people on her team of 26 at GE Appliances had learned that their immigration status had changed.

Under former President Biden, they’d been allowed to stay and work in the U.S. for two years, protected by a program set up to help people fleeing humanitarian crises back home. But the Trump administration abruptly canceled that program, revoking their legal status and their authorization to work. Carpenter fielded call after call from her panicked co-workers.

“They were calling me asking me if they’re on the run. ‘Does this mean I’m getting deported today?'” she recalls them asking.

As a team leader on a washing machine line and a union shop steward for IUE-CWA Local 83761, Carpenter was used to fielding all kinds of questions at work. But she wasn’t prepared for this.

Thank goodness she’s a shop steward. That makes her an expert on employment law.

    • Sean

      Deport them all.

      • Bobarian LMD

        For being in the Union.

    • Suthenboy

To pull on our heart strings for temporary workers fleeing oppression they put up an image of a guy who has been here 13 years?

      • SDF-7

Not to mention — “humanitarian crises” in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua… none say “The US is the only place to go!” to me. Plenty of other countries you could have gone to — the PPP program was purely “amnesty rammed up the via the back door….

    • rhywun

“Pray we don’t alter the deal further.”

JFC the hubris. Can you imagine waltzing into any other country and expecting to live and work there forever, no questions asked?

    • R C Dean

      Temporary program ends.

      Women and children hardest hit.

No mention of what countr(ies) they are from. Not that it matters, of course.

Also no mention of the fact that this means four actual American citizens will now have those jobs.

      • rhywun

“But those four actual American citizens are more useful to us as government dependents.”

  11. The Late P Brooks

Carpenter says the four team members were doing some of the most difficult tasks on the line, installing the hoses on the washers as well as affixing the platforms that hold the motors.

“These are people who are on critical jobs,” she says.

    And suddenly, they were gone.

No wonder the economy is crashing. Trump is driving out our most skilled and essential workers.

    • (((Jarflax

The last GE washer I had leaked. Deport away!

      A nation weeps.

  12. The Late P Brooks

Where will we ever find people to put hoses on washing machines? That’s not exactly a skill you’re born with. It takes years of intensive education and training. And don’t get me started on screwdrivers.

    • creech

“Hey, I’m an expert on Pollock and Banksy. How am I supposed to know if you turn a screw clockwise or counter clockwise to tighten it?”

  13. Evan from Evansville

Gotta fly cuz we’re going to eat Indian with my bro’s fam. Focusing on the boys, duh, but I wonder if any Trump misery pours out of the adults.

On my end, new cutie coworker and I chatted over the day. My favorite bit is she also has a very expressive face and appreciates mine with smiles and chuckles. Nothing at all will come of this and I’m not even thinking about it, other than the Positive Distraction Dust she and other interesting people provide. (Many ways to be interesting.)

I’m thrilled I’m off work for another ~55hrs. Fuck the goddamn Brewers. Steve Smith, I’m callin’ for ya. Fuck them for me, the way only you know best. They need to quit winning.

    • SDF-7

I call my past cutie coworker “Mrs. SDF-7″… (well, not literally — but you get the idea). Have a pleasant evening, Evan.

    • Ted S.

We won’t kink shame you if you want to eat Elizabeth Warren.

I think you call that “Coprophilia”.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

My history is a little rusty, but wasn’t Fauxcalingus a Roman emperor?

      • (((Jarflax

        He was only 1/1024th emperor.

Why yes, Fauxcalingus is quite infamous.

Little known fact, his favorite general was Gluteous Maximus, from the rump end of Britain.

      • Beau Knott

Would you like me to tell you her name?
        /if you need a reference, you’re not a glib 😉

People get to keep more of their own money, poors hardest hit

President Donald Trump’s tax and spending law will deal a financial blow to the poorest Americans while boosting the income of wealthier households, according to a new analysis from the Congressional Budget Office.

The hit to poorer families will largely result from the loss of benefits from social spending programs, while much of the benefit to the wealthy will come from tax benefits and cash transfers, according to the CBO.

Won’t someone think of the folks who depend on government handouts?

    • SDF-7

“If we can’t skim our cream from the trough while redistributing wealth, your life will be worse!”

“Music – hearing this, you should think of only one thing.”

Yep. 2026 is a Winter Olympics year, and also a Winter Paralympics year, which means none of the national team players compete in club leagues. So my hockey season becomes interesting. I think this is the 4th one since I started playing? Wow.

I haven’t been to practice all summer, but I went for the first time last night, and wouldn’t you know, one of our Paralympic guys was there. Bad news, I was rusty, but good news, my heard didn’t explode, so that was nice.

  16. The Late P Brooks

Trump’s cancellation of those programs has been challenged in court, delaying his efforts to get people to leave immediately. Also facing legal challenges is Trump’s cancellation of temporary protected status for people from a number of countries. Those protections, in some cases granted decades ago, were aimed at providing temporary relief for people escaping unsafe conditions due to war or environmental disasters. The Trump administration argues that those conditions have long passed, despite ongoing violence and instability in some places.

That’s because we stole their best people. These highly skilled geniuses are exactly what is needed to get those countries back on their feet.

    • SDF-7

      granted decades ago

      providing temporary relief

Anything before the heat death of the universe is “temporary”… :headdesk:

    • rhywun

despite ongoing violence and instability in some places

Oh well that changes everything. Here’s my wallet. Go nuts.

  17. Suthenboy

Y’all got the nostalgia cranked up.
’76 was a hell of a year. TV was olympics, fireworks and parades 12 hours per day (back when tv went off the air at night). The music was amazing and I spent the whole summer in cutoff blue jeans swimming in creeks and talking to bikini clad cuties. I will never experience another year like it.

    • Fourscore

      ” ’76 was a hell of a year”

I carried my duffel bag out of Ft Hood and never looked back. Got some school books and coasted for a couple years.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

“TV”: I still remember the tall ships in the New York harbor like it was yesterday for some reason. Lots of patriotic stuff that people would lose their shit over today but pretty wholesome from what I remember.

    • robc

I made the decision I wanted to see the tricentennial too.

      Another 51 years to go!

  18. SDF-7

Oh yay… “You will have what crumbs we deign to leave you…”

    • Suthenboy

I am sure if they could they would continue to tax the property and destroy property rights at the same time. No doubt there is some reason the state thinks this will mean more money than property tax in some way or other.

    • rhywun

Always wondered why the left is so obsessed with beach access. Beaches suck. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  19. SDF-7

A billion there… tens of billions here… pretty soon you’re talking real British money.

Put the Tower of London back into good service and bring back drawing and quartering for the worst ones and they’d snap back in line. Honestly, they’d probably do better with a decent king in actual charge but Charles doesn’t cut it.

      No.

  20. dbleagle

I got back early this morning from sailing a boat back from Kauai. We raced it over on Friday and finished third for our class. It was a disappointing finish that can be blamed on more wind on the southern route than our rhumb line route and holding off on doing a gybe too long. 11h15m01s for ~100miles of mostly downwind racing.

Coming back yesterday was one of those glorious days that suck somebody into ocean sailing. The usual trip back is beating upwind and takes a bunch more time and is usually wet and batters you. That is why most skippers have a hard and fast rule (except for their immediate family members) if you sail the race you must sail the delivery home. But yesterday was the exception to the rule. The winds stayed around 10kts all day, the seas were under three feet, and the sailing was easy and comfortable. We only took one wave over the rail the 16h35m home. The only thing that was less than perfect was the wind was from the east instead of the usual Trades from the NE so we had to take multiple tacks midchannel so we weren’t below Oahu when we arrived near the island.

One last less than perfect thing was the almost full moon. Last year the delivery was moonless, and we watched the Perseid Meteor Shower all night. Once the moon rose last night, we couple only see a few of the brightest meteors- but the moon rising over Oahu fat and golden was nice.

I crawled into bed around 4am the the Morning Links already had almost 150 replies. Good work people.

    • Spudalicious

      Glorious.

    • Ted S.

I bet when you got back to the pier you had the wildest quay parties.

      • dbleagle

Not much of a party. It was 2am in a small Oahu harbor.

The day after the race we had a heck of a party on Kauai.

    • Suthenboy

Oh well. There is no point in talking to them. They never, ever argue in good faith about anything.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I’m not clear on the details of what Trump is doing. Does he have the power under the Constitution or under the law?

    • Yusef drives a Kia

      But He’s A Historian!

  21. The Late P Brooks

    Or what?

A union representing Centers for Disease Control workers is calling on the Trump administration to condemn vaccine disinformation after the CDC headquarters was targeted in a shooting that killed a police officer in Atlanta, Georgia.

The big picture: The suspect, named as Patrick Joseph White, 30, of Kennesaw, Ga., who died during Friday’s shooting, had reportedly blamed the COVID vaccine for his health issues.

A local division of the American Federation of Government Employees union said the incident “is not random and it compounds months of mistreatment, neglect, and vilification that CDC staff have endured.”

Zoom in: There must be a “clear and unequivocal stance in condemning vaccine disinformation” by the leadership of the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services, which is led by vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the AFGE Local 2883 said in its statement to members.

“Well goddammit, Hot Lips, resign your goddam commission.”

    • Suthenboy

They lied their asses off, forced people to take unsafe and ineffective medicines that likely will have life-long consequences, shut down schools, destroyed businesses, sentenced the entire population to house arrest, forced people to perform absurd, useless rituals, pushed to criminalize critics, destroyed some critics, censored critics and so created a sea of seething anger in huge swaths of the population.

Now they want to censor critics and are crying about the chickens coming home to roost.

Condemn the violence but as for the rest they can eat shit. Scorn is exactly what they deserve. Maybe we should force them to have LYING SACK OF SHIT tattooed on their foreheads.

      • Suthenboy

Oh, did I. mention that was all done because of a virus they themselves created?

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        Suthen,

Pretty much sums up my feelings.

That was so well done that it has been copied and saved for future reference.
