Tom and Jerry
- 1 part dark rum (1 ounce)
- 1 part cognac (1 ounce)
- 1 teaspoon Tom and Jerry batter
- Whole milk (heated)
Yeah, I’m giving you a tough one, but this should last you through the rest of the year. This is a favorite of mine, and predates eggnog. To make a small batch of the batter (which you can buy), start with three eggs, separated. The whites get beat with a dash of creme of tartar until stiff peaks form. The yolks get mixed with a cup of sugar, a half ounce of rum, and a dash of vanilla extract. Fold the whites into the yolk mixture, and keep refrigerated. To make the drink, take a mug, warm it with boiling water (which is tossed out), then add the ingredients together, mix completely, and garnish with grated nutmeg, clove, and allspice.

That old-time Smithereens stuff was great. I first saw them in 1987. I don’t know about going to see them now with a stand-in for Pat DiNizio though.
So, today didn’t go well. I took my car in for maintenance because the headlight died and I knew a few things were needed. It goes up on the lift and… there’s issues that even I can see need addressing.
So, I’m in a rental looking at $3-4k in repairs to parts that keep the car going in the right direction. And while I’m getting the paperwork done for the rental, it decides we’re going to have our first whiteout snowfall of the season. So I get to drive back to my house in a new car I’ve had no acclimation to in whiteout conditions. Thankfully, the worst of my difficulties were in finding environmental controls and a bit of irregular accelleration/decelleration as my muscle memory gave the wrong force to the pedals.
Parallel parking was interesting because it has one of those stupid dial shifters and by reflex I kept reaching for the upright I’m used to. I just waved my hand above the dial and when I didn’t find anything remembered the dial… then I did it again a few seconds later when I went to pull forward into the proper spot.
Yay.
I hate those dials.

Muscle memory- the Tracker Testarossa™ is a stick shift, and what I drive during the week. Both of our other cars arent. Often I get in one of them and try to push in a clutch that isnt present.
I do that at least once in every rental I get for work travel.

I vaguely recall getting absolutely blasted on their barley wine years ago, but all I’ve seen for quite awhile is the Dead Guy. I actually have a growler with the Dead Guy logo (see, infra, re: blasted on barley wine), and it glows in the dark, even.

What I recall is that, as the drink cools, people knock it back, so serving hot boozy drinks is a good way to get everybody effing hammered.

Yesterday was a bit nuts, but it went quickly. That’s good. Since ‘Friday’ now means ‘Thru Monday,’ today may be busier, which would be interesting. Munchkin got a serving/ help gig at a mostly old-folks place in MN. She hasn’t started yet and is pissed for several reasons. That should go well, but at least something.
