“George C. Scott as Scrooge is better than any English actor.”

– juris imprudent

Don’t even start disagreeing with this. It’s an iron law that George C. Scott was the best Scrooge.

Links?

And here I thought the prisoners were more intelligent that their British jailers. Oh well.

An apt reply might be, “gfy, read the Constitution”.

Trump isn’t starting a war in Syria. He’s continuing what he started in the first term. Now here, he’s sending a distinct message.

So I guess this is a thing.

Along with a new woman in my life came her 19 and 22 year old children. It’s an interesting dichotomy in that they have more stuff and do more things than I could ever afford at that age, but still think they’re not better off than previous generations. Marvelous children, but this is a generation that has no frame of reference on what things were like not that long ago. I’m trying to do a little redirection with these two, with some positive results.

I’m detecting a micro penis here.

Yeah…no. What the fuck is wrong with New York?(I know, rhetorical).

Fix, or not, it was a good beat down.

Okay, that’s it for me. Peace out, Glibiies. Have a great Christmas.

Venture capitalists want to build their own tech utopias, and have been cutting deals with governments, mainly in lesser economically developed countries, to start building luxury towers and golf courses in de-regulated zones where, in some cases, they get to decide what’s legal.

It is “borne out of a dissatisfaction with the current political systems,” according to Mark Lutter, founder of the non-profit Charter Cities Institute

Zarouri is one of around 200 women to have accused Negre, a former human resources manager, of having spiked their hot drinks to belittle them.

They say he watched his female interviewees writhe in pain, some to the point of relieving themselves in front of him.

I was told there would be no kink shaming.

Whatever you do, don’t try to understand their position or consider for a moment that they have experienced things that you haven’t or know things that you don’t. You’re definitely in the right here and they need to defer to your knowledge and wisdom, so please continue to be blithely dismissive of their opinions.

  5. The Late P Brooks

We spend a lot of time dissecting politics in terms of beliefs – the what – but I think a neglected part of our political differences is whether we know how these things feel.

Appeal to emotion. At least you didn’t stoop to fuzzy thinking.

They described feeling that the basics of a middle-class life — owning a home, providing for the children, dining out occasionally — seemed unattainable or required unpalatable trade-offs.

    *dabs tear*

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

But I need a dozen subscription services, the latest iPhone, and all those plushy toys that guy was pictured with.

    • DrOtto

Unpalatable trade offs – not being able to have Starbucks every morning (and I don’t mean the grocery store shit, it tastes different without the tears of a barista’s broken dreams in it.) Having to live in an icky starter home with linoleum for flooring instead of hardwoods, tile or marble flooring or worse, renting an apartment for several years before buying said starter home. As if.

      • DEG

I don’t mean the grocery store shit, it tastes different without the tears of a barista’s broken dreams in it.

Those tears are what makes it taste so good!

That, and the barista might be good looking.

        HEY! It happens.

On a serious note, I’ll grant to younger folks that government programs like Cash for Clunkers and government spending leading to inflation have fucked up the economy in many ways. But those ways apply to everyone, not just young people.

      • Threedoor

The grocery store cold brew is better.

    • rhywun

I shared a roach-infested shithole in Queens with a buddy for seven years until I was able to move out on my own in my 30s.

When I left there was a hole straight thru the kitchen wall to the outside.

      Behold.

LOL I attached those street number stickers myself in 1998. That window AC on the top left looks like the one I left in my bedroom window when I moved out.

None of the buildings over three stories you can see to the left or right existed when I lived there. And someone added some new siding. Nice.

    • Grumbletarian

“Upward mobility is sort of dead,” said Gray Thurston, 27, an electrical engineer in Philadelphia, who earns about $90,000 a year. His parents are baby boomers. “My parents’ generation did great. Everybody I work with at that age has big retirement accounts, are taking vacations and own multiple houses. Good for them.”

And everyone knows they bought those multiple homes in their 20s while they were on one of the many vacations they take a year while the rest of their monstrous paychecks went into their IRAs, yup yup.

  12. rhywun

they are contending with an economy that has grown increasingly unequal in recent decades

At least I didn’t have to wade too far into that NYT pile of garbage to get to the real issue.

    Envy.

    What a fucking surprise.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Maybe my opinion is influenced by living in California, but the cost of housing is a real problem. But few in the media want to talk about how immigration has increased demand and regulations have stifled supply.

      • rhywun

SF was outrageously expensive when I lived there in the 90s. People figured out how to deal.

I can’t really comment on whether it’s getting worse since I’ve moved around a fair bit and I always live in expensive shitholes.

  13. The Late P Brooks

Along with a new woman in my life came her 19 and 22 year old children.

    Being alone ain’t that bad.

    • Spudalicious

They have absolutely no reference to economic hardships, thus inconveniences trouble them.

    • Spudalicious

I can’t believe you don’t like the story.

I don’t believe a word of the “wooden box for children with disabilities” article.

Accusations and not a shred of proof. “Just so” appeals to past trauma.

    Red meat for NYT readers.

      • rhywun

        Who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I would like them to answer if it would have been any better/worse if it wasn’t “special needs” and/or “native Americans”. Maybe offer some better alternatives for problem children. Instead we get emotional manipulation.

      • Spudalicious

Yeah, a quick search found a number of different local outlets reporting on the story. But it’s another “wait and see” situation.

Prospera already has some 1,000 residents living in what appears to be your typical upscale gated community with its own beach and golf course. Some of the financing comes from mega-investor Peter Thiel, but it was founded by Erick Brimen, a Venezuelan money manager.

Prospera has been talked about in libertarian circles for a while. It’s come up at FreedomFest and I think also the Tom Woods show.

Oliver Janssens made multiple millions out of cryptocurrency and was able to purchase 4-square-miles of property on the Caribbean island of Nevis. He hopes to sell 1,000 units per year with one ambition: Making it a family friendly retreat.

Bonus: the St. Kitts and Nevis citizenship by investment program.

There will be a park that is larger than Central Park, and each neighborhood will be centered around a local shopping street,” the spokesperson added.

Sounds like The Villages, but in California, so I expect it will be no bueno.

db: On that beer Mexican Sharpshooter reviewed: Dammit, if I had known about that before Thanksgiving, I would have stopped in Mifflinburg as I was in Central PA for a bit.

    • juris imprudent

Apt description – it’s a good two hours from me and I don’t live near anything.

      • DEG

I was in the Philly area for most of Thanksgiving. One day I was up in central PA. If I had more flexibility, I would have let you know I was in the area.

      • db

Bummer. Next time I’m at the store I’ll see if they’ve made a new batch. Most of their beers are seasonals; you can only get them each for about 3 months a year. Makes you anticipate them more, I guess.

  16. DrOtto

From the billionaire article on setting up cities article “…Friedman, who was a pro poker in the early 2000s.” So, he banged hookers or was a male porn star?

    • Chafed

Either way, sounds like a cool guy.

  17. Gender Traitor

I don’t have an opinion on the merits of any of the multitude of Scrooges. I just know there was an animated adaptation of A Christmas Carol when I was a kid in which Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come creeped me right out. 😳 (I had a fairly low threshold of creep-out when I was little. The “Johnny Smoke” anti-smoking PSAs gave me the heebie-jeebies. 😨)

      • Gender Traitor

No, this one played it pretty straight. I remember Mr. Magoo (kinda,) but not him as Scrooge.

      • R.J.

There have been Scrooge stories warped around every character imaginable, including Magoo. At one point in the early eighties it almost became a rule like Rule 34.

      • Ted S.

And for a title I mentioned in the previous post, The Passions of Carol is a porn retelling of the story, with a female editor of a Playgirl-type magazine treating her employees badly, only to learn the true spirit of Christmas. (As one of the IMDb reviews says, “Why do all of her Christmas memories involve hardcore sex?”)

    • Threedoor

      Didn’t involve Disney ducks?

It’s an interesting dichotomy in that they have more stuff and do more things than I could ever afford at that age, but still think they’re not better off than previous generations.

Luxuries are cheap, necessities are not.

If you have $1k, you can buy a new phone, or you can be 4% of the way to a late model used car.

    • Ted S.

My first smartphone back in 2015 cost about $130 for the phone and the first month of a plan.

When I replaced it in 2022, I think I spent about $160 for a bigger phone with more memory.

      • trshmnstr

The smart kids do that too. The less smart ones spend a grand on a phone because they feel hopeless about saving $30k for a car or $100k for a down payment on a house.

    • rhywun

I remember into my 30s there were still multiple levels of cold cuts at the supermarket deli counter. Young people like me bought the cheap ham or turkey and it was sort of edible.

I haven’t seen a range of choices like that in many years. It’s all the most expensive brands now.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Well, at the *counter*, sure. Oscar Mayer is still in the cold cases with the weenies.
