Presidents Day Afternoon Links

by | Feb 16, 2026 | Daily Links | 81 comments

The Big Swiss Machine now gives us “President’s Day” off. I think we had all narrowed our gaze at the folks in Switzerland, due to the vast number of days off they get, and then scowled northward at the Leafs, who have invented stuff so they have a day off, at least, every month. Since we make all the munniez, they decide to throw a sugar cube to us toiling beasts.

Now, I find the day a complete farce – when I was a mere youth, we had BOTH Lincoln’s (Illinois – Land of Lincoln) and Washington’s birthday off. Dag nabbit!

But they squished them in with retards like Carter, Wilson and Biden now. Gah.

Anyways, lets do some Presidential links;

Music.

I honestly never thought they would do away with the penny.

My thought was to go the opposite direction and make them out of copper again so that at least a little bit of the US currency was based on an actual commodity.

    But what do I know.

Fiat rules, just loop off a zero.

Thell come for the nickel next but be fun I g for the next zero with the dime.

    • SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

I believe one big reason was that they were losing money hand over fist making them.

The government worried about losing money? WTF?

The penny, and all coinage in general (including dollar bills on up) is a service that the government should provide for the citizenry. Period. No different than the postal service.

IMO the reason reason behind it is a slow incremental push towards digitalization.

      • Threedoor

The post office should be auctioned off.

  2. Bobbo

The British need to be taught how to round up things? No wonder they’re doomed

  3. rhywun

the vast number of days off they get

Our European friends/clients basically just ignore us for a month or two in summer and the last month or two of the year, so we don’t try to get anything out of them.

  4. rhywun

Hey, even the Swiss have one!

Is xe just a figurehead like the German Bundespräsident?

  5. Gender Traitor

Folks still commenting on the AM Lynx are wondering how anyone is able to comment on this page. Do you have to be posting via mobile? (Only way I’ve been able to.)

    • DEG

      Testing. Brave on mobile.

I noticed all the tags are displayed in a list that I had scroll past in order to get to the post.

      • Chafed

Me too on Chrome and what I can see has odd formatting.

  6. slumbrew

If the browser is narrow enough, it works ok for me, so portrait mode on my iPad is functional but not landscape.

    • Sean

      Aha!

Shrinking my browser window moves stuff around enough to comment.

    • DEG

Testing…. brave on desktop with a narrow window.

      Huh. Maybe.

      • DEG

        There go the avatars….

      • DEG

Though I’m back to posting at my normal width.

    • R.J.

So far everything looks normal again on iPhone with Brave.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Ditto Safari (landscape) on iPad.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

      You also have Conan books.

      This is best in life!

And Mulder and Scully Mexican candles.

      • Threedoor

I live in a decent personal timeline.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        And Stossel.

      • Threedoor

Most of the books on the shelf I have read.

The big pile on the floor that just fell over…. Not so much.

Office has needed a deep cleaning and reorganization for a long while.

  7. kinnath

Hey look. Make a very skinning window and I can see stuff.

  8. Rat on a train

It may be an issue with the header.

    • kinnath

yes. The header is a hundred individual lines on my browser.

      • Rat on a train

When I F12 and hide I can read and comment.

      • Tonio

“When I F12 and hide I can read and comment.”

        These euphemisms.

I have groveled before webdom and am performing the appropriate propitiations.

      • (((Jarflax

Does an F12 car even have an engine, or is it a Flinstones foot powered car?

    • Aloysious

Getting a good header is always a goal in life.

The official federal holiday is Washington’s Birthday. Lincoln was dropped.

  10. Grumbletarian

That write-up of Wilson seems pretty damn accurate.

  11. WebDom

I’m working on it! Something somewhere updated and it borked us.

    • Gender Traitor

Thank you! At the moment, NOT maximizing your browser and narrowing the browser window seems to make the page usable for the time being (and/or possibly using mobile.)

      We appreciate you!

    • Aloysious

      Thank you.

If you need someone flogged, we all volunteer.

    • DEG

Back to normal for me now.

      Thanks WebDom!

    • Threedoor

It’s been working for the last hour or so.

  12. SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

Fully operational now! Thank you very much!

    • Gender Traitor

Oh my gosh! It does! It’s a Presidents’ Day Washington’s Birthday-But-Not-Really miracle!

      • Gender Traitor

        It does is (fully operational)!

  13. Gustave Lytton

    RC- sorry, got called away.
Lack of uniforms or even uniformity. Wearing plate carriers and tactical gear negates any “undercover” claim
    Unprovoked assaults
Poor use of pepper spray and crowd control (see AngryCops for this)
Inability to perform basic police tactics such as taking people into custody by physically unfit agents
Traffic stops from non-police vehicles, not even unmarked cars

All is just downright stupid and plays into the opponents hands. It’s either incompetence or insider sabotage to end any sort of meaningful deportation before it starts.

    • Evan from Evansville

Agreed. Admittedly ignorant, I lean towards the incompetence of ICE agents suddenly called in to do something I don’t think they were meaningfully prepared for. I think Good was a bad shoot, with zero possibility of ‘stopping’ the active threat in the moment. Panic fire, though landing in her forehead. (Well. Can’t shoot the *car* and stop the threat, but, uh, killing her won’t really either. She’s not coming at you with a fucking katana.)

Understandable shoot, but not good, IMO. But that’s the situation the Left is purposefully encouraging. Especially school walkouts, like Carmel High is very proud of having the other day. Younger kids would draw FAR more attention, but older kids are more likely to kick start a violent police response. More evil. Ya send teenagers to the Bolshevik front lines on the streets, not kindergartners. (Old folk with signs and whistles are such good cheerleaders! I can feel the pride swelling within me!)

They *really* want more martyrs before midterms. That’s the best I can explain it. Historically predictable evil. Yay.

    • rhywun

      plays into the opponents hands

I want more deportations like any other red-blooded white supremacist bigot but I have to give the left credit for their diligence in amplifying every fuckup to their advantage. I guess it helps to have the entire MSM on your side but still.

  14. Aloysious

wrt pennies, my local Fred G. Meyer, owned by Kroger, stopped giving out pennies as change months ago.

Whether you are owed one or four pennies as change, they round up to a nickel.

I wonder if anyone has complained. I’m going to have to ask.

    • Tonio

Complain? I’ve switched most of my Kroger purchases to cash just to fuck with them. Because I never lose money on a cash purchase, and 9/10 I make a couple of farthings, in addition to the expense of maintaining cash accepting / dispensing terminals.

    • creech

My experience with Aldi is they give you a nickel in change if they owe you any pennies.

    • rhywun

I only pay cash to avoid CC fees when it’s under 5 or 10 dollars here and there. No problems with pennies yet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • Gustave Lytton

That’s better than most retailers. They round on the change and pretend that the prices are set randomly rather than can be gamed by the setter.

Another price increase from that smarmy idiot Bessent.

  15. Evan from Evansville

Many weeks later, apparently FedEx is interested in me. Curious, but not desirous, I tried to look further. Uh. Huh. I had to update my availabilities, but they only have starting shifts beginning between 3am-5am. Well. I’m doing part of that now, and this place is only offering up to 20hrs.

Why the shit would anyone want that? (Desperation, yes.) But damn. Well. If they wanna pay me $100+/hr, sure! (Kinda, probably not?)

Thanks to Tonio and others for helping get the site further flowing.

    • DrOtto

Shit, he was one of the good ones.

  16. Sensei

Woodrow Wilson typically wins a “near great” rating from historians, but for what? As president he was a racist who rolled back civil rights protections and eviscerated civil liberties. His aggressively imperialistic foreign policy brutalized America’s neighbors. His foolish determination to make Washington the deciding power in Europe’s terrible and unnecessary killfest cost thousands of American lives and ultimately made possible the far more devastating World War II.

So typical NJ boy, even though he wasn’t a native.

  17. Tonio

ACHTUNG! ATTENZIONE! LISTEN UP, YOU APES: Webdom has [redacted] the [redacted] and the website is hopefully back to normal, for everyone. For some values of “normal.”

And we are absolutely, positively, serious, when we ask you people to not put out thimbles of whisky (or whiskey) for the squirrels, no matter how cruelly they beg.

    Please report.

    • Ted S.

I’m too damn cheap (or poor) to put out the good liquor for the squirrels.

    • rhywun

      Fast alles funktioniert! 🙂

Except Monocle is broken now 🙁

      • Gender Traitor

I noticed that, too. I’m hoping it’s as easy as deleting and reinstalling…unless you’ve already tried that without success.

      • kinnath

I haven’t tried reinstalling it yet. Post here if it works.

      • Gender Traitor

OK, somebody say something so I know whether it works!

      • Gender Traitor

        : (

Oh, well! Not a huge deal. If someone could give trashy or slummy a heads-up next time they appear, maybe they can take a look at it.

      • rhywun

What the… now I got the number of new comments in parens without having to reload as before, but it wasn’t working earlier. Spooky!

      • rhywun

Ahh… except when I do reload they’re all marked read and it shows “0” unread.

Happy to be their beta tester cuz the recent enhancements have revolutionized my workflow. (OK… saved from needless reloads.)

      • slumbrew

        I’ll take a look.

      • Gender Traitor

        Thank you, slummy! : )

      And for me.

      • R.J.

Same! Looks like its old self.

      • DEG

        Looks like its old self.

Sortof. It looks like we lost the blue highlighting of new comments.

      • rhywun

And the scrolling to my posted comment is weirder than before – prolly a WP change.

    • Evan from Evansville

      Word. On Chrome.

Sober people being arrested for DUI

Sober drivers are being arrested for DUI across 22 states, with blood tests later showing no alcohol or drugs in their systems, a WSMV4 investigation has found.

Police reports, lawsuits and news articles show the problem of sober people being arrested for DUI extends far beyond Tennessee, where more than 2,500 people have been arrested for DUI whose bloodwork later showed no alcohol or drugs.

    • cyto

If you watch civil rights activists youtube channels, this is no revelation.

They always use boilerplate language –

“I detect a strong scent of alchohol”.

      “Eyes appear glassy”

Body cam fails to confirm these spoken observations.

Field sobriety tests are only used to gain information to use for conviction. Not to clear things up. They will routinely watch perfectly normal actions and claim to see evidence of impairment.

Never agree to a field sobriety test. Always demand a breathalyzer or blood test if it comes to it. Also demand the entire thing be recorded and that they never turn off their cameras or microphones.

      • cyto

There is one case, captured from start to finish on camera, sees officers lie to arrest a college kid. (I think. Maybe law student?) They claim to smell alchohol. He demands breathalyzer and blows zero. They arrest anyway. (Pretext was failure to dim high beams in a timely manner)

At the station they bring in a “drug recognition expert” to interview him. He is quite clearly in no way impaired.

The “expert”, showing Michael West levels of skill, determines that he is under the influence. Charges continue.

        He demands a blood test.

Much later, the results of the blood test comes back negative.

This is why cameras are critical and police “expert testimony” should come with a giant grain of salt.

      • rhywun

Honest question – if you’re driving dangerously or like an idiot but you’re sober… can an honest do anything to stop you?

      • Tres Cool

One night after leaving the bar, I got pulled over by a dyslexic cop.
He tried to give me an IUD.

      • cyto

Sure. Reckless driving is a thing.

        Improper lane change
        Tailgating
        Speeding

There are rules prescribing most things we would deem “driving like an idiot”

        Even driving too slow

“Impeding traffic” is often a feature of cop watch videos, as they grasp for charges against someone stopping to film a traffic stop

    • juris imprudent

Note: Links are not opening up in a new tab, just overlaying the Glibs tab.

And what is the disincentive for falsely arresting someone? I assume there are other incentives in play, including tow/impound fees?

      • rhywun

No here. Links still defaulting to a new tab.

      • cyto

I watched a video tonight where an acknowledged bad cop arrested a guy for running a stop sign.

He refused to hand his papers over, simply holding them up to his window. (Legal under that state law)

For contempt of cops, they arrested him, towed the vehicle, charged him with resisting arrest, no proof of insurance.

        He filed a complaint.

        Lieutenant investigated. Found everything good.

Body cam demonstrates his report repeated lies.

So we file a complaint against the IA lieutenant.

Chief investigates and says “all good” since the guy pleaded guilty to the stop sign.

Which was irrelevant to the complaint.

And may have been refuted by the camera (nuance… van was stopped in front of him, but way in front of stop line. He was at stop line, and went right after the van without moving and stopping again)

Anyway, guy was looking for a lawyer who would take the case. Clear abuse of authority and sworn false statements. But… guy has no resources and getting someone to bankroll small city justice and then live there?
