Saturday evening Links

Well, the wedding has come and gone. It was quite an experience. It poured rain all day, until God gave us a five hour window to get it done. And then the skies opened up to a torrential downpour to make up for it. All in all, it was an exceptional wedding and everyone had a marvelous time. Now to get the newlyweds ready to move to the Gulch and work in our dungeons. They will be a breath of fresh air after several years of incompetent employees.

Links?

Um. No. And you can tell he’s a New York “Republican”.

Ima chalk it up to “message sent”.

Meanwhile, in the other war, Putin keeps getting his ass handed to him. Crooks that surround themselves with crooks eventually realizes they’ve been crooked.

Womp, fuggin’ womp.

Womp, fuggin’ womp.

That’s a fine kettle of fish.

Time to pull our troops out.

Hakeem continues to beclown himself as he tries to remain relevant.

Our friend Animal has become quite prolific over at RedState. It doesn’t surprise me one bit the arsonist trial ended in a mistrial. There shouldn’t have been a fire to rekindle.

Okay, that’s it for me. I have a bunch of nuthin’ to do this afternoon and it’s time to get to it. Peace out, Glibbies.

Prosecutors claimed the demonstrators were part of “antifa” and filed a broad terrorism charge against them, allowing the Trump administration to claim they had successfully convicted antifa terrorists. The actual terrorism charge the government got a conviction on, however, is not connected to ideology.

Who knew that shooting a federal law enforcement officer in furtherance of leftist ideology wasn’t connected to ideology?

conditions in Haiti are “a humanitarian and political disaster”

I don’t give a fuck. But thankfully, I am not a citizen of that country.

Were I any of those that are in the groups wanting to get into the US I’d be doing my damnedest to do whatever it takes.

I probably couldn’t pass as a Haitian. Chinese or Mexican but I could learn to wash dishes or whatever.

Has anyone gotten Rumble videos to embed in WordPress? I tried several ways on my drone article and it’s not worked.

    • UnCivilServant

Oh, since I dropped the notice to TPTB on the ded thread – the Drone article can go anywhere in the schedule where an article is needed it’s standalone.

    • Tonio

I don’t use Rumble, so I don’t know. Are you using the insert block / video / insert from URL?

      • UnCivilServant

I tried that – WP just said “LOL, Video Not Found at URL”

      • Tonio

Okay. That’s not something I can fix. The only work-around I can think of is to upload the videos to YouTube.

We don’t have the storage to host videos in our WP Media Library.

      • UnCivilServant

I put a link in the article, it’s not vital that it be embedded, I just figured it’d look better if it were.

“Of the 350,000+ lawful Haitian TPS holders, roughly one-third work in our healthcare system,” he continued. “Immediately shutting off TPS will create a crisis in our hospitals, nursing homes, and in the I/DD [intellectual and developmental disabilities] community.”

We have plenty of low-value workers sitting idle. They’ll take up the slack. It’s not like you need years of training to be a bedpan jockey.

    • Tonio

      ^This.

And the departure of the Haitians will also free up housing that could be occupied by those healthcare workers moving to Springfield for jobs.

In the dead thred, someone posted a link about Scott Weiner getting kicked out of the SF trans meet up. In a tweet within that link, Weiner is referred to politically as “center right”. LO, fucking L

    • Sensei

Makes sense as I never see anyone vaguely right wing referred as anything but “far right”.

Well he is both Jewish and not commie enough so he does not fit into today’s Party at all.

      • Ted S.

Schumer graduated from Harvard Law School in 1974; immediate ran for the NYS Assembly; went from there to the US House in the 1982 election, and from there to the Senate in the 1998 election. Hasn’t had a real job in the productive sector in his life.

      • Raven Nation

I don’t know all the details of what’s going on in NY, but Schumer strikes me as one of absolute worst people in America. So, zero sympathy for him.

I think I offended my Oklahoma Reddit Cliche. She texted me the other night all panicky about a situation and she did not like the advice I gave. She did not want advice. She wanted me to say she was totally justified in feeling the way she was feeling. I told her we could talk about that when we got her crisis solved. You have two bad choices. Choice 2 is marginally more wise than Choice 1. This was, apparently, not the correct answer.

Look, little girl. Don’t ask me to help you solve a crisis, then go off on a tangent and expect me to follow just because you don’t like the curtain pulled back on reality.

  12. DEG

DenverJ and Threedoor, if you are out there, from the dedthred on the Free State Project.

Full disclosure: I moved to NH in the late 90s before Jason Sorens wrote his Free State Project essay for The Libertarian Enterprise. I helped out the LPNH for a few years, then got away from politics. I took the FSP pledge, and when the vote came, voted for states other than NH. I stayed away from politics other than signing ballot access petitions, reading reason. Then the Rona Panic (see the Too Local News stories) happened

The original pledge to move to a state the project votes on and work to build a freer society activated when 20K people signed it. That was in 2016 if I remember. To my knowledge the FSP only claims 6,000 have moved to NH. The new FSP Executive Director, Eric Brakey (full disclosure: I’ve met him twice, I’m not sure he would remember me, and I like what he’s doing), has started an initiative to find supporters that have moved to use them as a marketing tool for the FSP.

NH won the voting for the state to move to. The vote was in 2003 if I remember correctly. I think Wyoming was in second place.

The movers I know are a mixed bunch from all over the country.

Libertarians in NH moving into the Republican party started at about the time Sorens wrote his essay. In 2016, when the pledge activated, I wasn’t very involved with politics so I don’t know how many libertarians were masquerading as Republicans in the state legislature at that time; however, I know it was a number greater than zero with some of them having lived in the state at the time Sorens wrote his essay.

NH was one big advantage for making political change: Ease of getting elected to the state House of Representatives combined with almost every bill in the legislature getting a vote before the full chamber (i.e. killing in committee is very, very rare). There are 400 state representatives for a state of roughly 1.3 million (roughly one state representative per 3200 people). I am active in politics nowadays but not hugely active (in other words, there are people far, far more active than I am). I am on a first name basis with a few state representatives.

I’ll say the plan is working better than I originally thought it would (see my disclosures). There is still a lot of work to do, but at this point, if I’m going to be on the East Coast, I’ll be in NH, FL (I was a DeSantis supporter in 2024), or PA (family reasons).

    • rhywun

I appreciate the work but TBH politics is (obviously, for those who know me) not why I live where I do.

Although I’ve visited NH a couple times and it’s nice there.

Less than zero desire to live in the current hot topics, FL or TX. PA… maybe.

      • DEG

I think PA is sliding downhill though I wouldn’t write it off yet.

    • Threedoor

I was surprised to learn about how large the NH house was a couple years ago. That certainly makes inroads easier.

6000 is a pretty big chunk of people. It would be interesting to know how many families and actual gross number of people that would be.

Wyoming would have sucked. The weather alone and the distance from major cities would have turned most away.

Idaho has a small house and like Wyoming the LDS control a sizable portion of the local and state politics. Likely less for Wyoming. Here in OD you’re never going to be governor without being LDS. They made damn sure Janice McGeechin was ran out of state politics, too conservative and Christian.

      • DEG

It would be interesting to know how many families and actual gross number of people that would be.

I don’t have number and I doubt the FSP has numbers.

I know FSP members sponsor family events every now and then. There are some with families, some of which with young kids. A handful have adult kids some of whom live in the state and are libertarian or libertarian friendly.

      • Threedoor

Lots of bills due in the Idaho house and senate in committee. I know Dan Forman. He’s one of the most conservative guys in the ID senate. The Boise ruling class is known for ignoring his bills. Again, conservative and Christian, he can’t call the southern ID reps and dems ‘Brother.’

Our population is larger than both NH and WY as well making positive change harder.

We’re also 2/3 state and fed owned land. And so many of the self described conservatives will fight tooth and nail to auction off a single acre of land. With the massive influx from the west side I’m pretty sure we’ll see even softer republicans and eventually a democrat mayor, the later population in the Boise area seems to be growing fast.

      • Spudalicious

        And part time legislature, ftw.

      • DEG

Every legislative session in NH we have about 1000 or so bills filed. The legislature is in session for a few months a year.

      • Threedoor

        That certainly helps Spud.

      • DEG

Building up a group like the NH Liberty Alliance might help. If you think you might want to do that or know someone that does, contact me at thorby455 AT proton DOT me and I can put you in touch with some folks that can help.

      • Threedoor

There is the Magic Valley (twin falls area, 10 hour drive from me) Liberty Alliance. They bring out the hate. Looks like there is one up north but from what I can see of their FB page they are focused on being NIMBYs and not anything resembling Liberty minded ideas.

I’m out of the loop as I’m banned from the top two social media sites.

      • Gustave Lytton

First time I drove to Boise, I saw Ralph Smeed’s billboard on I84 outside of Caldwell and was impressed. Sadly he’s passed and Idaho Free Foundation got skinsuited into a Republican fringe group.

  13. Q Continuum

“a Fourth of July protest last year”

“protest” = “using fireworks to lure officers out and then try to murder them”

I’m no lawyer, but I do believe there’s a concept called “lying in wait” that guarantees premeditation and is considered a severe aggravating circumstance.

I could try to find a more dishonest article than that one and I’m sure I’d eventually be successful, but it would take a while.

      • rhywun

  15. Evan from Evansville

Fun bit about S Korea still giving a fuck about their leaders NOT fucking ’round. (I’m not sure if the early ones deserved it. I’ve forgotten what I knew about Park Chung Hee, whose eldest daughter, President Park Geun-hye, was Prez when I was there. Much scandal.

The list ends much nicer than I thought. When I was first there only one had not been kicked out, one way or another.

Syngman Rhee (1948–1960): Ousted by popular uprising, died in exile. Oooh!
Yun Bo-seon (1960–1962): Ousted by military coup.
Park Chung Hee (1962–1979): Assassinated while in office.
Choi Kyu-hah (1979–1980): Ousted by military coup.
Chun Doo-hwan (1981–1988): Imprisoned for treason and corruption; pardoned.
Roh Tae-woo (1988–1993): Imprisoned for mutiny and corruption; pardoned.
Kim Young-sam (1993–1998): Completed term; unpunished. WOAH!
Kim Dae-jung (1998–2003): Completed term; unpunished. WOAH!
Roh Moo-hyun (2003–2008): Committed suicide during a corruption probe. …OH!
Lee Myung-bak (2008–2013): Imprisoned for bribery and embezzlement; pardoned… oh?
Park Geun-hye (2013–2016): Impeached, removed, and imprisoned for corruption; pardoned. ….oh, really?
Moon Jae-in (2017–2022): Completed term; unpunished. Huh.
Yoon Suk Yeol (2022–2025): Impeached and removed after declaring martial law. Yeah. That was kinda fucking nuts.
    Lee Jae-myung (2025–Present): Incumbent president.

So there ya have it. My take is modern Koreans, with their cultural (legit) patriarchy still in place, along with homogeneous unity – Took the Constitution seriously. If I recall, which I don’t, the early coups were against legit corruption of the executive. Now? Looks like they’ve softened.

    • rhywun

And all of that is pretty “clean” by Asian standards.

      • Evan from Evansville

Ridiculously clean! The culture and people demanded accountability. They didn’t excuse (much) of that bullshit. Remarkable, what they’ve accomplished in their 80 years as a nation. IIRC, the North was richer until the South until ~1979 cuz of the Ruskies. I got there in 2010, so the memory of that was fresh. Explains a lot of the hagwon, private academy, industry. (Not all, though.)

Kids dropping their phones off with the principal as they got to my last school (2021-’22) was blessed. No fuss. Kids just did it.

Grandparents much be… uh… no idea what they’re thinking, what with ‘modernity.’ “I USED to be with It! Then they changed what It was! Now what I’m WITH, isn’t It! And what’s IT is weird and scary! And it’ll happen to YOU!” <– Legit, Iron Rule territory, with that Truth.

TOO LOCAL NEWS: NH State legislators with big mileage reimbursements

The lawmakers who serve in New Hampshire’s all-volunteer state Legislature famously receive a nominal salary: just $100 per year. But that doesn’t account for the bulk of the public money these 424 elected officials get for doing their job.
State senators and representatives also receive mileage reimbursement to cover the cost of traveling to and from the State House in Concord. While their base pay has remained unchanged since 1889, their mileage rate has increased over time and now stands at 72.5 cents per mile, which can add up quickly.
In total, as of June 12, the Legislature had paid out $1.7 million in mileage to 417 lawmakers since the current two-year term began in December 2024, according to records analyzed by the Globe. While most had received about $3,300 or less in mileage, 24 had accumulated more than $10,000 apiece.

    • Spudalicious

      That’s called hiding a raise.

    • rhywun

Kick in a couple bucks a month each towards their internet bill. There is no reason to be anywhere in person.

      • DEG

Remote sessions came up during the ‘Rona Panic.

The state senate went full remote.

The state house went remote for committee meetings and committee hearings on bills. The remote hearings turned into a bit of a shitshow. Session days were in person. The reason for in person session days? Cost for video conferencing software that would support 400 people plus allowing public viewing was more than the Legislature wanted to pay.

Since the panic ended, the Legislature went back to doing everything in person.

      • rhywun

If the cost is less than paying for the mileage, do it.

In EvLand, I bought a suit at Nordstrom Rack today. (It won’t be worn as one.) Light grey. Kinda nice, up my style-alley. And shoes. And a shirt. (Oh, and socks! (But no tie!)) And other dark brown pants I quite like. I did fairly well, frankly. I’m a 36(S), I discovered. Suit $160, marked down from $400. (All? Ouch, but no stress purchases, at all.)

I also did something really dumb, in hindsight. Helped out crazy-ex. We’re also gonna watch a ballgame tomorrow at her place. I’ll not be pissed if that doesn’t happen. Gonna do more research and learnin’ for my Monday interview. Curious, curious. Will be strange leaving the house all dressed up.
