Friday Out of Pocket Afternoon Links

by | Jul 24, 2026 | Cocktails, Daily Links, I Am Lame | 72 comments

I’m out of pocket, but the content mill demands grist. Apologies for any duplicated links.

There was a reason they were sent off world.

Fuck your “federal service”.

I assume there’s shrinkage.

The people who started the barrel aged beer trend continue it.

Didn’t Trump rename the islands?

Obviously, there should be a government program to prevent this, right?

An interesting piece on the shifted Overton Window.

What difference…

With that, I give you the cocktail of the week:

The Paloma

  • 2 oz tequila
  • Grapefruit pop (to top)
  • Quarter of a lime

Yep, I’ve done this before, but it’s national Tequila day, and this is a great summer drink. Quick and easy, a classic highball. I would recommend picking up some Jarritos to get more authentic. Add a splash of the pop to a glass filled with ice, add in the tequila, top with the rest of the pop. Squeeze in the lime quarter and drop it in. Done.

You could fancy it up using fresh grapefruit juice, simple, and soda water… but there’s times that it’s better to go the simple and traditional route.

With that, I hope you have the weekend you desire.

Chase Craig, an innovation brewer and barrel warehouse specialist at Goose Island, aged some imperial stout with apple, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, oats and panela sugar to create 2026 Bourbon County Brand Apple Crisp Stout, mimicking the classic dessert.

This one will either be wonderful or garbage.

The lawsuit filed this week asserted that Florida resident Sean Dale Henry, a member of Gun Owners of America and supporter of Gun Owners Foundation, called the U.S. Virgin Islands’ police department multiple times to apply for such a license.

Florida resident? Not Florida Man? What did he do wrong?

      • DEG

I think that’s OK as long as he’s been drinking and tells his friends, “Hold my beer!” before he does it.

I don’t get the “chilled noodle” thing in Japan. It is however absolutely a thing in summer. Japan goes bonkers for “seasonal” things of all kinds especially food.

      • DEG

I’ve had Sichuan spicy cold noodles. Delicious.

        I know, Chinese not Japanese.

But… I really liked them. If I was in Japan, I’d try chilled noodles too.

Obviously, there should be a government program to prevent this, right?

It seemed like such a good idea to make Charlie Kirk statue “on spec”. What could go wrong?

    • Threedoor

I’m ok with a government plan to stop people from making statues out of “steel and resin.”

      Bronze, marble, granite, stainless steel.

“The Second Amendment doesn’t end at the shoreline,” Luis Valdes, the U.S. Virgin Islands’ outreach director for Gun Owners of America, said in a statement. “Americans don’t lose their constitutional rights simply because they travel to a U.S. territory.”

We need Samoa these lawsuits just to force territories into compliance… or independence.

Your bathroom faucet broke? Don’t worry, that’s a federal program.

According to the still-invaluable The Russians, the way this played out in the USSR was that you got on a waiting list for the government-employed plumber who was in no rush to finish the assigned work when he could make more money by moonlighting for cash under the table, and of course using the government vehicle and parts for his black market business.

    • Fourscore

So, like government medicine in Canada.

When your personal plumbing doesn’t work properly you get on a list to see the person that will get you on the list to see a screener that will sort things out and get you on a list to see a doctor.

Firsters do not penetrate the flesh with foreign objects.

We penetrate your mind. Your soul. With our First.

We all penetrated your mom last night. Repeatedly. At the same time. #firsterbukkake

Bukkake doesn’t involve penetration you fucking noob.

      • bacon-magic

It’s called pulling out. Which is what whoever your dad was should have done.

July 11, 2025, ending the careers of over 1,300 domestic employees implementing U.S. foreign policy at the State Department.

US foreign policy? As in, policy set by the president like the one that fat little colonel started an impeachment over in Trump 1.0? Or like the other kind set by entrenched bureaucrats who do whatever the fuck they want or is in the best interests of the Democratic party operatives?

    • Brochettaward

I was working from home when the message arrived at 11:12 a.m.

Dude was in his underwear with three porn videos on one browser and confidential information on Al Shabaab on the other doing the work of the US taxpayer.

      • Brochettaward

        Final thoughts:
        1. Calls his firing trauma. I missed all the think pieces written by private sector employees let go. Paints trying to get back into federal “service” as a selfless thing he’d do despite the “trauma.”
2.. Where did the cunt actually work? Office of Countering Violent Extremism. What did that unit do?

“Helping local governments, schools, and non-profits recognize early signs of radicalization.”

So, he wasn’t working on anything related to foreign policy in the State Department to begin with. That’s a lie. He was in a department turned inward. He notes that a lot of these employees can’t reapply because the State Department and other agencies are now only looking at internal applicants. They don’t want to rehire these people because they were weaponized political assets of a certain party.

His job was to push propaganda about wrong thinkers. The department was established under Obama which kind of tells the story, don’t it?

I was being generous when I assumed he’d be looking at anything related to a foreign threat or even domestics related to it. The Islamic extremism was like an afterthought I suspect.

      • R.J.

More like a confidential video on Charlie Kirk. As soon as I saw his title, I knew. Fuck that guy.

Self-important people have always bugged the piss out of me.

    • Brochettaward

The “democratic” socialists have totally expanded the scope from just healthcare to food. Mamdani started it openly with his government grocery store nonsense. I’ve run into several of late who will openly argue food is too important to be left to the private sector.

It’s the same incremental bullshit we’ve always seen. When one gets in power, they will inevitably overreach like crazy and destroy the entire idea.

They’ve going all out to prop up Mamdani with the state of NY shoveling money at him for PR. No, it doesn’t make sense for the state of NY or align with any of the bullshit Mamdani or his supporters claim to believe in. But creating the illusion of success will trump helping the actual poors every day of the week. And twice on Sundays.

BREAKING NEWS — The Executive Committee of the Glibertariat, at their annual meeting in New York, has made a change in the official uniform.

No longer will the top hat and monocle be mandatory for all affairs, only the formal meet-ups.

Everyday wear for Glibs will consist of this, in a variety of colors. The official reason given is “It’s a timeless look that needs to come back.”

    Gentlemen, alert your tailors.

    • kinnath

Red suits are disposable and biodegradeable.

    • Brochettaward

I was really hoping for a Hillary inspired Chairman Mao style jumpsuit.

I think it’s time for a dictatorship of the Glibertariat to solve things like this with the sort of efficiency it calls for. Anyone with moderation powers gets the bullet.

      • Brochettaward

Sorry, Moj. It’s for a good cause. You won’t be forgotten, but your family will have to denounce you in a public article.

    • The Other Kevin

It’s practical too. With that color nobody can tell if you Shatner yourself.

I think the part he’s missing in the Overton Window article is that the politicians are able to do this because the average person has become so demoralized that penny ante demagoguery works like a charm. Unmoored voters plus feckless opposition equals the ability to radicalize without consequence.

    • The Other Kevin

We have many, many citizens who are net takers. I learned from my oldest kid and the people she used to live with. They couldn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t be on food stamps. It’s free! And then you don’t have to work full time! It’s a whole sub culture of broken people, and they follow socialists like a pied piper.

      • Fourscore

I see some pretty nice cars lined up at the local Food Shelf.

A few years ago a local food shelf had so much at Xmas time one of the volunteers ended up with multiple boxes. He passed them out to locals, including us, since there is no way to refuse them at the distribution point.

I don’t recall what it was, I seem to remember a big block of cheese, some black & white generic canned goods. Maybe 10-15 years ago.

Another time a neighbor came with extra food shelf Hubbard squash, tried to give one to us. We had dozens of our own that we were trying to get rid of, we turned her down.

      • JaimeRoberto feckful & gruntled

My son used to have to volunteer at the food pantry at our local Catholic Church. Nice cars would drive up. The kids would wait in the car while playing on their smart phones, and they’d drive away with free food. One of the priests was as disgusted as we were, but he said they weren’t allowed to say no.

      • rhywun

        “Not allowed”? AYFKM??

Like someone mentioned the other day, there is no culture shaming such people anymore and there desperately needs to be.

    Shocking

Members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have voted to dismiss Karim Khan as chief prosecutor for alleged sexual misconduct.

Elected the ICC’s third prosecutor in 2021, Khan was suspended last month. The decision to remove him was passed with 82 votes in favour.

The court’s oversight body found in June he had committed a “serious breach of duty and serious misconduct” by engaging in an improper sexual relationship with a junior ICC staff member and seeking to stop her pursuing her complaint.

Khan has repeatedly denied all the allegations against him. His lawyer said he would challenge “the lawfulness and fairness of the decision through all available legal mechanisms”.

What woman could say no to a face like that?

And who has ever heard of a Muslim man abusing women?

      What hogwash.

  17. The Late P Brooks

The entire process, however, goes beyond the fate of a single prosecutor and could reshape the world’s only permanent war‑crimes tribunal.

The misconduct investigation has put the institution under a glaring spotlight, intensified divisions inside it and played out alongside an unprecedented campaign to weaken, and in fact dismantle, the ICC in its entirety.

The fear among its supporters is that the court will emerge weakened and less able to face the gravest global threats.

Strictly on the up and up. Pay no attention to the fakery and fraud behind the curtain.

    • rhywun

an unprecedented campaign to weaken, and in fact dismantle, the ICC in its entirety

I’m not aware of such a campaign beyond one or two troglodyte countries rolling their eyes at the globalist pretense of that crowd.

Abolishing the Senate Might Be the DSA’s Best Idea

Those kei vehicles are pretty neat. I’d like to pick up one in pickup form but the thought of getting hit by a good old Murican SUV has convinced me not to.

      • DEG

There is a small kei truck community here in NH. Every now and then I’ll see one on the road. And, every now and then I’ll see one in the parking lot of one of the gyms I use.

Today went really well. We were pretty dead, but everything went really well. We’re supposed to be really busy next week, so I’m told. I also got my first check, though only 1/2 weeks on the pay period. I’m very, very pleased. Gonna pick up a damn good chicken BBQ pizza and some cheese dip. It’s pretty lovely when I can eat whatever I want. That’s usually true, but I’m extra tiny now. Tightened the belt a notch.

Cubs start now, and I’ve got no plans! Does feel nice to have a weekend with no work nor search. I could get used to this.
