Friday Scent of Grape IC Afternoon Links

The Browns are on top of the AFC North. I repeat, the Browns, the CLEVELAND BROWNS, are on top of the AFC North. Local media is already talking about games getting flexed into prime time, while ignoring that our offense looks sadder than a WNBA fan athletic competition. But you don’t care about my petty sports fandom (it’s kind of a big deal here), so let’s get to the links…

When the Saints… go marching in…

Oh when those Saints go marching in.

For the Brewers, there’s good news, and bad news.

This was not OMWC. Do we seriously need to start assigning chaperones to visitors?

If you wanted a start into looking into how casks are made, this is solid.

An end of an era, or putting down the wheezing old pet? For reference, Neverwinter Nights still has active players.

Maybe the kids are alright, I’m personally happy about the rebound of pinball.

Refusal of air conditioning is ‘climate change’.

Look, they’re just broken.

/queues up music

Rioters… less intelligent than Yinzers.

I can see both sides, but I’ll default to the owners of the house.

(((They))) will lead you astray!

With all of that, let’s get to the drinks for the weekend. In honor of the Saints going to gay Paris to stomp the Stillers (hopefully), let’s highlight a drink from there

Sazerac

  • Healthy pour of rye
  • Small amount of absinthe
  • Bitters (Peychaud to be traditional)
  • Sugar cube
  • Small amount of water (optional)

Now, for those who know a thing or two about a thing or two will notice that this looks to be a twist on the Old Fashioned, and they would be correct. Originally, the drink was made with brandy, as it was more popular due to the pernicious French influence. The Peychaud’s bitters called for also originally hail from New Orleans. I won’t tell if you use a different bitter though. The absinthe is traditionally a wasteful rinse, a dropper bottle or misting bottle are much better options to integrate a small amount into a drink than a rinse. This drink is usually built in a mixing pitcher instead of built in the glass (as the Old Fashioned is). So, to build this. rinse (if you must) your serving glass with absinthe, mist if you can, or add a couple of drops in with the bitters. In the mixing container, put in the sugar cube, 4 dashes of bitters, and about half a teaspoon of water (optional). Muddle that sugar cube in with the bitters, and you’ve made a simple syrup (you can use about a quarter ounce of simple instead), add ice, and 2-2.5 ounces of cognac, brandy, or rye, Stir to combine, strain into the chilled glass with the rinse of absinthe, and express and garnish with a lemon twist.

With that, I’ll let you get to the weekend. Let’s go Saints, Bengals, and Browns!

Wasteful? My God, man, what do you think I do with the absinthe, pour it down the sink?

The drink sounds good, except for the lemon twist.

This is important, because one talking point I hear is that these riots are not unique, and that violent protesting is as French as beurre on a baguette.

So what you’re saying is the French are uncivilized savages.

That article was all over the place but made some good points. The only takeaway I got is “France is fucked.”

How many times I was called a conspiracy theorist by some dopey lefty for saying she married her brother.

And the stunner of all stunners is Biden’s DOJ just refusing to do anything even after the fraud was proven.

    Russia Russia Russia

The Russian government has launched a covert online influence campaign to sway public opinion and undermine both Democrats and Republicans sympathetic to Ukraine ahead of the midterms, two key Democratic lawmakers warned Wednesday.

Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.) and House Intelligence Committee ranking member Jim Himes (D-Conn.) told reporters Wednesday that the findings on Russia were detailed in a classified report on foreign election interference sent to their offices by the U.S. intelligence community earlier this week.

“It’s a carnival out there,” Himes said of Russia’s digital efforts, which he said aim to generate “a sense of chaos and anarchy.” According to Himes, Russian disinformation operations cover a range of topics, from sowing distrust in U.S. institutions to questioning the validity of voting machines.

As if we need any help from the Rooskys to undermine confidence in American political institutions.

In contrast, French oak’s cell structure requires that the blanks be cut in a particular orientation radiating outwards from the log’s center. If not cut properly, the resulting cask will leak. Creating non-leaking French oak stave blanks requires the logs to be split into thin triangular wedges that are then trimmed into rectangles. As a result, much less of the log is used relative to American oak.

Even their damn trees are inefficient…

Researchers modeled heat-related deaths for different age groups in 854 European cities during repeated heat waves in June, July and August and found that 50,391 people died from warmer temperatures, and of those, 32,619 died because of the extra heat caused by the burning of coal, oil and gas, according to a study in an upcoming issue of Nature Health.

Our model confirmed the assumptions we started with. SCIENCE BITCH!

It’s funny how the Online Right ridiculous such studies when they’re used to push global warming, but immediately accepts them if it’s to say Europeans are backwards for not having air conditioning.

Meh, everyone likes data that confirms their bias. It’s just important to remember that includes researchers.

For those who arent using AI at work. .

This new agent based AI is really cool. I am still struggling to find a car for the kids, so I am giving AI a chance. Meta has Muse. My first interaction with it was to have a conversation about what kind of car, what my priorities are, operating expenses, insurance..

It set up some agents that run automatically every day. They check for cars that match a couple of scenarios, check to make sure the title is clean, find out if it is still available if it fits my criteria and then alerts me if it finds a good deal.

It seemed so cool I let it look for a basement bargain on the earbuds I like. I lost one the other day and wont pay retail or even sale price to replace it. But if it finds it on clearance…. it can actually buy it for me if I let it.

Grok can do the same thing now.

    Getting really cool.

Interesting, inasmuch as I work for a company that does chat-based lead gen for auto dealers, and we get periodic spikes in these weird chats all using the same template, asking the same question, but for different vehicles, citing a specific VIN, and do not respond after the initial message, which includes a name and phone number. I’d bet that’s probably what’s happening in those cases.

      • cyto

        Cool.

AI says that auto dealers are using AI to scrape listings and snap up all of the private seller good deals.

        Do you guys do that?

Not our division, but our corporate overlord (Reynolds and Reynolds) does. My former boss moved from Virtual Retailing at our company to their Curator product team, which is a “Unified Intelligence Engine” – or IOW, a CDP that centralizes data across all dealership operations for better analytical insights. One of which is actually targeting customer vehicles for acquisition based on age, service history, their credit, purchasing history, etc. Basically, get them in the dealership to sell or trade it before they even think about listing it.

    • Ownbestenemy

I’ve setup a little exploration development environment with two separate AIs with agents doing different things. It is quite amazing

The DeLongs said they have been trying to work with the township for more than a year, submitting layouts, trying to get the right permits, and attempting to work with fire, law enforcement and code enforcement. They said that effort did not prevent the violations from being issued.
    […]
The violations are all related to zoning, focusing on non-residential type use on a residential property.

🙄️ I could see if people are parking in the neighbor’s front yard or something, but Jesus Christ… just enforce the law if that happens.

    Another non-existent problem

“When a federal court determines that material misrepresentations are being made about a State’s election rules, an injunction to prohibit that conduct does not contribute to public confusion, it prevents that very problem,” Jackson wrote in her solo dissent.

While New Hampshire’s federal representatives are Democrats, Republicans run the state government. Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed a bill into law this year that prohibits the use of student IDs for voting.

A New Hampshire-based nonprofit called Coalition for Open Democracy sued the state over the law, which the group said needlessly burdens young voters under the guise of trying to solve the “non-existent problem” of nonresident voter fraud.

    Vote early. Vote often.

Oct 22 (Reuters) – A US law that bans the manufacturing of switchblades for sale or distribution across state lines violates the right to keep and bear ‌arms under the US Constitution’s Second Amendment, a federal appeals court ruled.

I didn’t know we actually had a federal statute banning switchblades – I assumed they were state and local.

    • kinnath

Someone posted the actual law the other day. It banned shipment of switchblades via USPS.

I bought one 5 years ago and had it shipped interstate. I came UPS or FedEx, but not USPS.

    • Sensei

Earlier discussion said it seems mostly that it applies to using the USPS to ship.

Students are specifically prohibited from voting in New Hampshire

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the sole dissenter in a new Supreme Court order that green-lit New Hampshire to fully ban student IDs for voting during November’s midterm elections.

In the order, Brown concluded, “I respectfully dissent because—even, and perhaps especially, when an election is looming—I would not disturb a clearly justifiable federal-court order issued to ensure that the public receives accurate information about a State’s electoral processes.”

New Hampshire passed a law earlier this year that said student IDs were not an acceptable form of identification to get a ballot, the Associated Press (AP) reports.

There is now no way a legal resident of New Hampshire currently attending school can provide proof of identity and obtain a ballot.

    • Grumbletarian

It was an 8-1 decision in favor. Is Newsweek suggesting Kagan and Sotomayor have gone full MAGA?

  16. The Late P Brooks

“We applaud Justice Jackson for her dissent, in which she stands for the Constitution, the right to vote, and a rational application of Purcell. We will continue to vigorously litigate this case in the defense of the fundamental right to vote of young voters across New Hampshire,” the statement read.

    Fuck off, you hyperventilating twats.
