Lately I’ve been seeing more paper straws around in restaurants and movie theaters. Fucking Turdeau. So much for Big Business and Science saving us from being who want to ban stuff and not restrict our choices.
Paper straws infiltrated a few places near me. They’re craptastic. Thing is, it wouldn’t be difficult to make a paper straw that worked. You’d just need to coat the whole thing in wax and make it a shade sturdier. That’s assuming you’re trying to provide something of value to the end user, though, and not just virtue-signal your environmentalism through forcing your Luddite preferences on others.
Tell them you have an allergy. The ADA demands they provide you with plastic.
Businesses can no longer hand out straws nor can they leave them out in a dispenser for you to take as you wish. You have to request one from an employee.

We have to take into account that we’re talking about a generation that saw their grandparents live in utter 3rd world poverty to their children now growing up in a mostly-developed economy (on the coast, of course), from being the “sick man of Asia” to getting away with thumbing their nose to the Americans in the Sea of China. Now you’re going to tell these people that “socialism with Chinese characteristics” doesn’t work? If cutting the organs out of religious minorities is what gets you from squat toilets to sex robots, then why are we surprised that rendering Uighurs in mass abattoirs barely registers a shrug from the Chinese populace?

I do think something people seriously overlooked is that these urban businesses are connected to the regime so why would they use this wealth to undermine the regime? And since China is still a one-party state its not like these businesses are free to openly oppose the regime.
And it was assumed that these businesses being dependent on foreign trade would be therefore not be dependent on the regime and willing to oppose it and that the Chicoms would be unwilling to suppress them since this would alienate foreign investment.
Then you got the whole fear of the urban and rural underclass outvoting them if democracy occurred.

Also I recall one of the arguments for why wealth and trade create liberty is that those things are needed for a middle class and a middle class is needed for liberty. My reply was that this assumes that the Chinese Middle Class opposes the Chicoms. Is that actually true though?

In my experience, for the most part, yes. As long as the government provides stability.
This is pretty universal. If your living conditions are not unbearable and your society provides stability you tend to support the system you believe is responsible. And if you read any history of truly unstable times, 30 years war, Taiping rebellion, any civil war or revolution, it makes a great deal of sense. Instability is very bad while it lasts and rarely leads to improvements over the prior system.
So why did European liberalism happen? Living conditions in 1688 England and 1789 France, 1848 Germany, etc. weren’t exactly unbearable.
1847-48 across Europe was largely a reaction to upheaval resulting from rapid industrialization, hardly stability, 1789 France largely grew out of the Monarchy being bankrupt and repeatedly raising taxes on the merchants and peasants, who had grown in power and wealth under the prior Monarchs as those Monarchs undercut the aristocracy, again not stability but an attempt to take away wealth and political power that had been shifted to those groups. 1688 England was a reaction to an attempt to restore Catholicism in England by James. Your examples are proving my point, which is that stability is what people most desire.

This time period is the first time where “cultural issues” seem to be actually relevant to me, personally.
My Libertarian beliefs fit in nicely with culture. Some people win, some people lose. In the end it tended to work out. That scrappy kid could start shinning shoes, open a shoe store, and corner the market on shoes. In the modern world, one can hardly open a small business in a city without begging for permission from the state. I suspect that this may be a unique time in history where those who rail against imaginary “privilege” may have a point. The poor are kept contained, thanks to subsidized housing and food, the middle class, as long as they don’t violate any social norms, are able to maintain their status as long as they make sure their children attend a state subsidized university, and the rich are still in flux where, within three generations, they’ll be poor again.
To maintain that level of status quo, we’ve created a system that keeps people from working their way out of poverty. Want to cut hair? Be sure that you go through the right training. Want to open a bar? Good luck with that.
Glib world, of course, would have no status quo.
As a result of all that, we’ve become a Victorian like society. Cancel culture is the extension of custom and manners. It’s Puritanical. Elitist. Dour. Humorless.
The bright side is two fold. The first is that money always wins in the end. It’s real. Tangible. It’s not about our wants, desire or fate. It simply is. The next reason to be hopeful is human nature. We like to laugh. We want Groucho to make a fool of Margret Dumont. Combine the two, and the anarchy at the heart of the American experiment will always win out in the end.

Khan Academy is one of my goto charities. When I started tutoring my niece in Algebra I went back and relearned it all and was amazed at how much I enjoyed it. The teachers actually enjoy teaching, they explain how various concepts relate and what is actually going on with various formulae as opposed to school where it was all rote do step a then step b and don’t bug me about why that works!
I love that site and use it myself when I wanted to brush up on math a few years ago.
I think the education system is going to have a massive breakdown and subsequent rebirth when everyone realizes that you can get a pretty good education online for free from KA and other sites. Personally, I’m looking forward to it. Fuck these anachronistic universities and fuck student loan debt.
With a free market in higher education, I think we would end up with the majority of it done online with lab sessions for fields of study where hands-on instruction is necessary (auto mechanics, surgical medicine, etc).

I ordered a number of vinyl albums this week. My goal was to fill out my AOR section. Jazz and blues are solid. Punk is waaaay over represented. My lovely better half seems to be obsessed with prog rock or Springsteen. One should be centered, so hence the AOR kick. Here’s the thing. Styx, I’ve determined, is the Nicholas Cage of bands. Are they brilliant? Terrible? Crazy? Delightful? All of the above? It’s driving me to madness. Like Cage, in any of his movies, they can be both brilliant and stupid at the same time. Do I hate their work? Do I love their work? Fuck. I think I listen to their albums just to try to figure it all out.

I’m convinced that anything recorded on analog should be heard of vinyl. God, I sound like a hipster, but damn it, there’s a difference. I have great bose speakers throughout the house. I have lots of great digital tracks. Why does that Bowie album feel so much better when it’s on the record player through the tube amps? Am I fooling myself? No idea. I do know that I can listen to an album on the turntable, close my eyes, and just let it go. Digital, and it’s just background noise. Is it nostalgia? Some weird stubborn streak? Fuck if I know.

Charles Cooke explained that the recording is/was made with the idea it would be played on the prominent medium of the day. So go vinyl for the older stuff, but it’s not better for the more modern recording that was made in the cd or streaming era.

Sounds good. My wife makes banoffee pie fairly often for dessert as my fam loves it. She makes a pretty standard take with crumbled graham cracker base, dulce de leche and home whipped heavy whipping cream. I’m usually avoid sweets but I dig that simple recipe.
