You are not fabulously wealthy. I deal with people all the time whose net worth is measured in the tens of millions. I know exactly why they live here. Their kids don’t go to shitty schools, they go to incredible private ones. No one craps on their front steps, the bums are kept off their street. They can eat out in a different fancy restaurant each nite if they want. Two weeks in the winter they go ski the Yellowstone Club. Maybe this year they go to French Polynesia for ten days. And then it’s back home to where they can hang out with other high net worth earners and maybe sit in the front row at an MLB game or an NBA game. The rich want to be next to the other rich and have experiences that their money can afford them.
It is funny — because my fantasies if I had that kind of money are mainly building a house so I could be pretty much left alone with my family.
Well, and maybe learn how to handle a decent sized ocean going boat so said family could take an extended cruise…
If I came into lottery type money myself I’d probably be pretty close to what you are talking about SDF. Large acreage where I could hunt and fish on or next to and a ski resort within an hour drive. Although I’d maintain a small house or condo in the city to see fam and friends and such. But what’s also missing in that above exchange is that most rich that I encounter are not the idle rich. They work, often still long workweeks, and as such need to be in or near the big city to keep that up. Even in these days of Zoom meetings and whatnot.
My cousin is the driver for a hedge fund manager. That dude works his ass off.

But a cautionary tale: Two years ago our son scored a 1560 on the SAT, which was the 99.6 percentile. We were thrilled and even started raising our expectations for the applications. But we were stunned at how many schools turned him down, or put him on the no-chance waiting lists. He even was rejected from the college both my wife and I (and her mother) had attended, which he went early decision, even though we had been very generous donors for over 30 years continuously. (We stopped donating after that, those fools). We learned from a contact on the admissions panel that he was 1) too lightly complected; 2) they wanted kids who would be the first in their family to attend college, 3) we weren’t poor enough; 4) there were too many other applicants from northern California; 5) he wasn’t lgbtq+; 6) there was no evidence of him being a social justice warrior, in fact his interest in majoring in economics said the opposite. All his extracurricular stuff, leadership positions, lacrosse team play, and starting his own successful internet business in HS apparently were meaningless.
He only applied to two Ivies and two other schools at the Ivy level, out of 16 applications, so it wasn’t setting his sights unreasonably, either. Some much lower ranked schools dinged him too.
Despite this, we are thrilled where he ended up, and his college turned out to be a perfect fit for him. He’s doing great. But it still blows our mind at how a stellar transcript and winning essay weren’t near enough in the current era.
Our major institutions are clearly filled with very serious people.
I had a classmate with similar academics as me who got a free ride to Harvard. I got into an Ivy but I didn’t get any free ride. So I said fuck you and went state. This was 30+ years ago – this shit’s been going on forever.

oh yes, we have most of those things the same (Asian=White, of course), plus the pandemic screwed up a lot of placements as well, since kids (reasonably) took a gap year last year so there’s even fewer slots for next year available. I said earlier in the week that my reaction to these sorts of things has gone from “that’s tinfoil-hat territory” to “that’s plausible” in a depressingly short period of time.
I was just thinking that same thing. Today I had that realization with the pharma companies. They are making big bank on vaccines, and are in position to do so by force of law for every year for eternity. They spend tons on advertising with the corporate press so anything shady will never be reported. This week I saw that blacked-out congressional hearing about ignoring reactions during the vaccine trials. There is no way they aren’t hiding something big, probably multiple somethings.

If you are trying to improve dexterity, use spent cartridges, it’s more difficult to load than live ammo.

You can use whatever you want for the speedloader. Unless it’s a .22, dry firing an empty or spent chamber should not damage the gun. Otherwise, there would be all of these broken centerfire revolvers, because people often miscount how many shots they fired. Although, check with the manufacturer. Using snap caps is fine, but some people are against using them for safety reasons because it’s “loaded” with something. Regardless, never dry fire with the muzzle pointed in an unsafe direction.

Our truck would randomly not start up after having been driven somewhere. Turned out to be some PCM thing that only the dealer could fix. Yes, I hear you groaning at the word “dealer”. My husband was quoted $600 via text. He approved this via text. Almost 2 weeks later, it’s done and the final cost is … $1800. So my husband says, “I don’t fucking think so. It’s a goin’-to-Home-Depot truck and I’ll let you keep it before I’ll pay that.” They dodged his calls for over a week. Yesterday (mind you, we’re a month out and we needed the truck during our move, didn’t have it, and had to rent one), the dude finally calls and they can’t come to an agreement, so the dude says, “I’ll eat the labor. Let me find out what the parts cost.” He did not find out because the parts manager was out. Now, look, if he can’t hit a couple of keys on his keyboard and look that up, I’ll eat my hat. So he says, “Why don’t you come get it and we’ll hammer this out Monday?”
Husband tells me we need to go get the truck and I’m just floored. “Without paying for it? Absolutely not.” “Why not?” I explained what a mechanic’s lien is. He had never heard of such a thing.
I mean, there is no way anybody could wring $1800 out of that truck. It’s 21 years old and has almost 400,000 miles on it. But don’t think a dealer wouldn’t be enough of a dick to slap one on that truck if we didn’t come up to scratch.

In celebration of what might be one of my last trips out to get high quality, and maybe interesting and exotic food (due to my imminent jab-firing), I stopped in at the Asian market today for some hondashi, some king and oyster mushrooms, fresh Szechuan peppercorns and ginger root, and some shichimi togarashi and furikaki.
While there, I saw something that caught my eye and said what the hell. I’m now the proud owner of 1.2 pounds of fresh chicken hearts. I’m a huge fan of offal; tripe, tongue, and liver pate are among my favorite things. But this is an entirely new one to me. I’ve seen several recipes already at the usual suspect sites, but I’d love to know if there are any Glibs out there with preparation suggestions. (BTW: my propane and propane accessories are stashed in the garage due to some ongoing outside work, so that method isn’t available to me).

Grilled chicken hearts sounds epic. One of the recipes I saw somewhere was marinated hearts on skewers, flame grilled to perfection. Damn right I’m going to try that method as soon as I can get my damn grill back where it belongs.

In my youth I would have said bullshit how can you have too much iron? But several years ago my own elderly dad was getting a check up and when it came time to draw blood they couldn’t get enough. Dr said it was way too much iron and they showed me a drop going in to a vial where it just dropped like a rock. Didn’t think it was possible to have too much of a good thing but there you are.

I’d put aside half the hearts for that purpose, except that I’m cutting out carbs starting YESTERDAY(!). However, when I ease them back into my diet, I’ll keep that fact in mind….

I’ve never prepared chicken hearts.
I have eaten a lot of them at Brazilian BBQs. Whatever the folks at those restaurants do, chicken hearts are delicious.
I can’t stand them, but whenever mom made fried chicken, dad always scarfed down the fried hearts and gizzards first.

When I buy whole chickens, I sometimes make pate from the liver. And sometimes fry the heart and gizzard. There used to be a drive in in my hometown that offered a bucket of fried gizzards. Always my dad’s favorite.
Organ meats, acorn squash, butternut squash, and octopus are really the only things I won’t eat.
Octopus? The sweet delicious meat? Are you including calamari (squid) in that? And Ink for black pasta?

Octopus is delicious, but for me, it’s ethical; they are too smart for me to want to kill. I love squid though and will eat my weight in fried calamari.
Well you’ve hit upon one of my weak points. Once a year or so, I vow to give up pork. I can’t stand it, because pigs are sweet, intelligent, loyal creatures, on par with dogs. In my mind of I eat a pig I should be able to eat a dog, which I would never do. It’s just so damn easy to buy pork, and it’s so freaking delicious. This is try number 4,371: I’m quitting pork. They don’t deserve to be eaten.
l0b0t, same here, while us kids enjoyed the fried chicken, our parents would be savoring the gizzards. I never understood. Then as I came of age, slowly I started to dig it too, and now that I’ve hit middle age, I’ll be damned if I didn’t turn into my parents re: chicken gizzards, okra, tabasco sauce, pickles, and a hundred other things.
OK for my first attempt, I think I’ve decided I’m going to marinate them in an aioli/olive oil mixture, then broil them in the oven on skewers.
Whether they turn out well, or they suck, this is only my first attempt out of many. I’m fascinated by a highly nutritious organ meat, that’s also very affordable, and can adapt to so many flavors. If I end up in the poor house due to the jab, it might be the best thing I have going for me for a while….
So the sea bass now have a purpose, but do they have a sole?

The easily offended are making the usual demands , etc. etc. I guess the Dems just couldn’t find enough or manufacture enough ballots to have Durr lose on a recount.
Should’ve assembled their opposition research earlier if they wanted to bring down Herr Durr.
