Let’s get things kicked off for February. There’s the annual visit of the Suberb Owl on Sunday, which will have many Americans wishing ill will on N’awlins. Locally, it means that a brewery is throwing their annual big beer and big food specials, and people start planning their St. Patrick’s Day out.
Yes, I’m going to consider talking about Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, because another three episodes dropped. Only five more episodes dropping over the next two weeks for them to wrap up the first season. They’re really going heavy with Easter Eggs (Nico is in foster care!) and references to Marvel characters (some I’ve even missed), but making some changes to the core characters that I do not like. There’s a scene where Peter says something completely thoughtless about Uncle Ben having passed (and just refers to him as Ben, not Uncle Ben). The 110th street gang appears to be written by people who have only watched 70’s cop shows about how gangs work. Harry and Peter aren’t friends and meet through Norman (who has been being helpful, which is in character, but I’m trying to figure out what the inevitable and obvious betrayal will be). It still pales to Spectacular Spider-Man.
On the other hand, Invincible Season 3 is kicking ass and ripping people apart.
Poor little Bobby.
Life imitates Monty Python.
I didn’t even like the old lap desks, these are even worse.
The real shock is that the game is still online.
For those who have fond memories of Bioware, pretty sure they’re just memories at this point. EA does not look to be giving them any help either. Meanwhile, I finally finished off my first BG3 play through, and started up another.
They’re really reaching here.
A fairly good read, my favorite bit was Newsom complaining.
Lockpicking must be much more popular among Japanese teenagers.
For those looking for some more entertainment in the DNC collapse, this may be of interest.
This was written by someone writing a finance and money column. Contemplate that on the tree of woe.
Once again, we waste a remake on something that was already done well enough (and was a loose remake anyways).
In Canada’s defense, they have at least two really good breweries. As a strike against them, they’re both Quebecois (Brasserie Dieu du Ciel! and Unibroue).
I’m pretty sure that Great Lakes Brewing is trolling me with this drink offering: The What She’s Having: Codigo blanco tequila and pickle juice shot with Tajin rim and a sweet horseradish pickle chip. I will do my best to never troll you like this, instead let’s go with a girly drink of old made correctly.
Amaretto Sour
- 6 parts (1.5 oz) Amaretto liquor
- 3 parts (0.75 oz) cask-strength bourbon
- 4 parts (1 oz) lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon rich simple syrup (2:1 ratio of sugar/water, double with regular simple syrup)
- 1 egg white (or 0.5 oz aquafaba)
Now, this one uses some bourbon to pump up the ABV and uses less simple syrup, relying on the bourbon to add some sweetness as well. If you don’t want bourbon, or want to go with a lower ABV drink, drop the bourbon, and step up the simple to 2 parts (0.5 oz). You can also add depth by swapping out some of the lemon juice for some lime juice, or even add a splash of orange juice to add sweetness.
With all of that out of the way, this requires a dry shake, which sounds impossible, but what it means is without ice. So you add your ingredients to a shaker, and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds. Then add ice, and shake again until chilled. Double strain (fine mesh strain over the glass, Hawthorne strainer on the shaker) into a glass filled with fresh ice (if you’ve just got a single strainer, you’ll be fine, there just may be some egg white that got a bit cooked by acid/alcohol that will be visually unappealing). Garnish with a lemon twist and some brandied cherries if you wish.
With that, I hope your weekends go well, and your gatherings remain drama free.
Seriously?
I refuse to believe that’s real.
Would you believe Sheikdjibouti?

Oh for the love of Pete… I’m terribly embarassed that even as a non-sports guy it took me a minute to get that…. thought you were referencing one of your crazy cocktails / local ales or something at first.
Well played, I suppose.
Oh, I stole it from What We Do In the Shadows.
The Superb Owl would make a great hipster pub name.
Or Harry Potter pen pal club.
Same quality of drinks…
I’ve seen much discussion in the last few days about a Superb Owl in New Orleans.
This is my own superb owl who lives in my back yard.
I’ve named him Shakespeare… because he’s a Bard Owl.
*golf clap*
They released too early then — Lent doesn’t even start until March….
I also like Boreale
I also also like the Quebecois tradition of describing beers as if they were women.
Never heard of them, a quick check doesn’t seem to show them distributing to the US (at least not in my area).
I have to say that Unibrow sounds like it would be even worse than regular beer.
Fishing for the obligatory I see….
Okay — but how does it compare to the last one I bothered to watch… Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends? And you know full well why young men of America at that time were watching that show — and it sure wasn’t for Peter Parker….
Oh, I watched the Amazing Friends, even to the point of remembering the video game monster that came to life in two different episodes. Honestly, if you like Spider-Man, give Spectacular a shot. The animation style took a while for me to get used to, but the writing, character development, and overall care put into the character are amazing.
I’ll consider it… as mentioned before, I’m not hugely a Marvel fan — though he’s probably one of my more favorite from their Universe.
At least he didn’t want to change his name to Lucille.
Maybe the kid was conceived in the kitchen, among the cereal bowls.
See, when I see the name Table, as I mentioned, I think of little Bobby.
If it makes you feel better — I got it from the Links reference and didn’t need you to overtly show us.
And they tried adopting another kid named Lucille — but she picked a fine time to leave them.
Politico can suck it.
You have to admit, they are sticking to their brand, what with the dishonesty and sleaziness.
…And sucking it.
I can not argue with you — nor do I have any hope any semblance of the original spark remains there (or at Obsidian at this point).
I still haven’t made it through Act 1 in BG3 for some reason… and that’s playing in story mode. I think I just don’t like modern D&D rules for one thing…. now get off my beholder’s lawn, dangnabbit!
I’m still a bit optimistic about Avowed, but I know Obsidian well enough to wait for the patches to come out before picking it up.
I have zero background in D&D, and the playstyle looks like a steep learning curve. I’m going to play my copy of Divinity Original Sin 2 (maybe next, when I’m done with this round of Skyrim), which I think has a similar thing going on.
Anyone want to know Kamala’s deep thoughts on the LA fires?
https://x.com/WesternLensman/status/1887873159182884974
Straight out of this weeks’ Hat and Hair rerun.
Not really, sorry?
I’m sure that fires have been devastating because of the devastation in our neighborhoods… the places where we live with our neighbors. Or somesuch.
“A fire is a hot thing that burns other less hot things. “
Even Mr. Science on SCTV made more sense.
Consider that she came close-ish to being President.
On the Tree of Woe.
I’m just hoping that the economy isn’t taking a dump within range of the next election. It will take more than one term to blowtorch the swamp to ash. Good start so far, but at some point we need enough people in Congress who are afraid to vote against legislation to back it up.
Just imagine if Joe had crapped out mid term.
Dunno, ‘adaptation and resilience’ seems much more reasonable than her appeals to climate change. This was less demented than normal for her.
Sigh… I had hopes it would be interesting from the title (I think tipping culture these days is insane too)… but then it goes right into “Black people hardest hit!” Yay…. I can’t imagine living my life with the perpetual chip on the shoulder that these people seem to… everything is always tied to immutable characteristics that just happen to give them Victim Points ™… bleah….
Lazy lies, too. It’s not 1955 Alabama anymore, asshole.
“Goli Sheikholeslami”
I don’t believe this is a real name.
You think it is a bunch of Sheikholebaloney?
Do you think Fuk U Ok Ah,is a city in Japan?
Politico can suck it.
At least he didn’t claim to be scrupulously nonpartisan. That would really be tempting fate.
In a two-party governance system such as we have, it is impossible to have meaningful* political opinions without being aligned with one party or the other.
*for values of “could actually show up in policy or legislation”
“I hope your weekends go well”
Same to you. Tomorrow I’ll be in scenic Pekin, IL to play a few hockey games that don’t really count but it should be fun.
Thanks!
I’ve got to make a batch of chili (which, as I’ve done the past several years will be put into a pie dish, and covered with shredded cheese) at some point, and go to a friend’s house for his annual Superbowl party. Shit will be talked, children will be underfoot, drinks will be consumed, and hopefully a good time had by all.
Do you put tortilla chips (or crushed taco shells) as the pseudo-crust of the chili cheese pie? I could definitely see that…
SDF-7:
Nope, I bring a bag of tortilla chips to serve next to it. Some people use it as a dip, others fill up their bowls with it.
“Shit will be talked, children will be underfoot, drinks will be consumed, and hopefully a good time had by all.”
As long as nobody goes stupid and talks politics, it sounds like you can’t go wrong.
Looks like I will be house sitting for a friend of the wife’s. Starting Sunday, so…
Superb Bowel, here I come!
The entire world needs to go into the woodchipper 🖕

Do you still have a job?
Ok, Zoomer.
Mortally wounded
Nearly 170 employees at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights (OEJECR) were placed on paid administrative leave on Thursday, according to agency officials speaking on the condition of anonymity because they fear retribution.
——-
The number of staff put on leave is significant, relevant to the office’s size, and “leaves the environmental justice program at EPA on life support,” says Matthew Tejada, formerly deputy assistant administrator for OEJECR during the Biden administration. He is currently a senior environmental health specialist at the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Pull the plug.
“Office of Environmental Justice”
If it takes more than 10 seconds to describe what the department does, it’s bullshit and we don’t need it.
Gasp! Does that include the guy who plays the didgeridoo and does the land acknowledgements?
Was that ever approved by congress? Yes, no? No, then kill it with extreme prejudice.
Fetterlump to vote against RFK and Tulsi. Where’s my shocked face at?
He votes against his party only when his vote doesn’t really matter, huh?
He’ll be reelected by 10 points in 2028 in a swing state. That’s if he isn’t on the national ticket.
He beat Dr. Oz. Maybe PA Republicans don’t have any better, but even Casey wasn’t invulnerable (despite the legacy).
The Lump is going to be hard to beat. He does seem smarter than the average Dem, even with the brain damage.
In an email statement, EPA spokesperson Molly Vaseliou wrote that employees put on leave had jobs that did not relate to the agency’s “statutory duties or grant work.”
No shit, Shirley?
Seems like “job does not relate to statutory duties” would be an automatic termination.
Of course, they are all stilling pulling paychecks.
https://x.com/bennyjohnson/status/1887960632789434706
LFG!
Sacoby Wilson, an environmental justice expert at the University of Maryland, says despite employees being placed on administrative leave, the Trump administration can’t erase the impact of the office of environmental justice.
“ What’s at stake here is public health,” Wilson says. “What’s at stake here is the future of our children to live in healthy environments. What’s at stake here is our democracy, the rule of law, the American dream.”
That’s some top shelf mumbo jumbo.
To add to a previous comment, if the only thing your degree allows you to do is work in government, the degree is useless.
Because collective-we made it that way?

“urban barbarisms”
lol 🙄
OK, the author is desperately trying to tie this phenomenon to pLaGuE but the fact remains that we are a culture of theft because we have chosen to be one.
we are a culture of theft
I’d say that certain subcultures that we tolerate way too much BS from are cultures of theft. Your average suburban soccer mom isn’t swiping stuff off the shelf or looting when the power goes out.
No, and I was going to add that none of this stuff is visible in my town but I didn’t want to jinx it because the politics are 100% in favor of it flourishing.
trshmnstr:
Based on some of the stories I’ve read, the suburban soccer moms are lifting more than most people expect. I’ve even seen articles written by some of them defending it.
@neph
I almost caveatted my statement because I’ve heard similar. However, I don’t think the rate is anywhere near what it is in the urban areas.
Now I’m wondering what a “rural barbarism” might entail.
And if it would be more or less traumatizing than walking in on Dirty Mike and the Boys defiling a public restroom…
I suspect it would entail barbecue, cheap beer, and firearms.
Why does Michael Vick keep calling me telling me to place a bet on the Superb Owl
It’s better than being asked to bet on the super bowel.
He’s doggedly determined?
Don’t take any of Vick’s advice about wagering on the Puppy Bowl. 🐕
Ask Kristi Noem instead.
Is there a name for the animation style where the backgrounds are all gorgeous matte paintings bordering on hyper-realistic, but the characters are all ugly, misshapen, low-detail caricatures of a human form despite the story supposed to be serious?
Just insanely-priced “pro” subscriptions. That’s totally different. Trust me.
I want to see a list of the private organizations that bought those “Pro” subscriptions at the same price.
Like Hunter’s paintings that had so much ‘artistic value’ people paid hundreds of thousands.
POLITICO is a privately owned company. We have never received any government funding — no subsidies, no grants, no handouts. Not one dime, ever, in 18 years.
Their definition of “subsidy” is rather malleable. Just ask them about Musk’s enterprises, or the oil and gas industry.

You mean “discovered.”
Huh, I knew you could make batteries out of potatoes, didn’t know about bananas. Not sure why that should be illegal, though.

Not so fast on the firing the USAID workers, says Trump judge in DC.
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2025/02/breaking-judge-temporarily-pauses-trump-admin-placing-usaid/
I’m sorry, Yer Honor, but you don’t get a say in the matter.
It amazes me that the President, aka the head of the Executive branch, can’t fire people that work in the Executive branch. I hope this quickly works its way through the courts, and we can forget about this nonsense.
Someone mentioned that a constitutional challenge was the point of a lot of this. In that the judicial and legislative branches should have zero say in how the executive is run. I would over turn much of the New Deal BS, so the left is not to happy to go to bat over it, as they would have zero chance of coming back from that.
ZWAK, same for birthright citizenship. Team Trump is expecting to win that one, so they say bring it on.
It pisses me off that they insist on losing on birthright citizenship when they could just win by dropping the family unification POLICY.
Of course that makes me anti-family!!!
BOTH need to go.
SC won’t overturn the precedent. As they say – settled law.
I donno, plenty of bad precedent has been overturned.
There isn’t anything grievously wrong birthright citizenship. Related thoughts.
Yes, because JI thinks it stupid, there for it must be stupid.
Post hoc, ergo propter hoc.
Sorry, JI but there is everything wrong with “Oops, that baby just happened to pop out while you were standing on our soil, we have to treat it like it has a right to be here.”
There were contemporary arguments indicating that “birthright citizenship” was NOT the intent.
Anyway I don’t really give much of a shit – it’s low on my list of such things – except insofar as how many of my tax dollars are going to them.
End that and I’m happy to let birthing people who are not subject to this jurisdiction knock themselves out.
The baby does, the parents don’t. One you can win, the other you’re going to lose.
That is a twisted and deliberate misinterpretation of the law by people with malicious intent.
Birthright citizenship wasn’t controversial until we adopted the anchor baby policy.
I disagree on the “wasn’t controvertial” assertion of yours.
In fact, you appear to be attempting to separate two things which are not separable.
Unless you take the stance of “your citizen gets a free post-birth abortion and you get a deportation”
You know, JI, they can lose on birthright citizenship and still dump the family unification policy. Having the stink of family unification on birthright citizenship may help their chances of winning on that one.
The authors of the 14th amendment made it clear that it didn’t apply to aliens. It was specifically for freed slaves, and to overrule Dredd v. Scott. It didn’t apply to American Indians, who had been given their own sovereignty. That didn’t happen until 1924.
Yes, the President should be able to fire people. But let’s be careful what we wish for because at some point a Donkey will be wielding that power.
I really like that movie but one look at the screenpics and it’s obvious what direction a remake is going to be required to take.
I gave him 50 bucks for scotch, and he tried to leg it. Of course I grabbed him.

That cocktail, and the variations, sounds really good.
Might have to go to the likker store.
Meet the guy with the worst luck in the world
On the day of his out-patient procedure to remove a kidney stone, Chad Gerlaugh drove himself to Morton Plant Hospital in a specially modified van.
A quadriplegic since a 1998 car accident damaged his spinal cord, he was confined to a wheelchair and had only limited motion in his arms.
When he was discharged 23 days later, he couldn’t drive himself home. His legs and arms had been amputated.
Reckon he ought to have gone to a people hospital instead of a plant hospital.
Well, he is practically a vegetable.
Wait ’til he gets the bill for the extra services!!
It amazes me that the President, aka the head of the Executive branch, can’t fire people that work in the Executive branch. I hope this quickly works its way through the courts, and we can forget about this nonsense.
Trump should start making a point of meddling in Congressional staff employment issues and see what happens.
Ah yes. Always highlight the crisis at the national parks whenever the money stops.
https://www.sfgate.com/national-parks/article/senators-warn-national-parks-could-close-20154149.php
Privatize the National Parks, those that are worth it don’t need external funding.
The Dems clearly haven’t gotten the message that everyone is sick of their shit.
Ask him which of those USAID programs he’s willing to give up to save the parks.
…Trump does not have the authority to offer buyouts to all federal employees.
But Biden could cancel any student debt he wanted, right?
So the national parks will close and people cant have avocados? The horror.
Never mind the rape, murder and mayhem going on in a world afire around us, mostly because of dem policies, you cant have your fucking guacamole dip.
This has Obama’s fingerprints all over it.

We don’t need to wreck some kid’s life over dumb social media posts that have nothing to do with work?
LOL at some point the left has to grow weary of going apeshit.
Only when it stops getting results.
I am guessing you dont have a lot of experience being around the mentally ill. For them apeshit is the default condition. It never ends and they never tire of it.
Elez was one of a cadre of young Musk hires who joined DOGE as part of what Musk has said is an effort aimed at “dismantling the radical-left shadow government.” That has included tech-focused personnel with no government experience, some of whom have left behind considerable social media footprints.
Gavin Kliger, another DOGE staffer, was reported by Rolling Stone to have previously reposted content from Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist who has dined with President Donald Trump.
White nationalism is contagious.
Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist
Them white hispanics again huh?
I have to tell you all. My mom is SOOOOO happy right now. She’s cracking jokes and laughing. She is so happy to be going to skilled nursing. She’s practically giddy.

So HAPPY to have my mama back.

LOL at some point the left has to grow weary of going apeshit.
Not likely. They’re addicted to it. With any luck some day there will be a mass ragegasm leaving who-knows-how-many people dead or permanently catatonic. Fingers crossed.
Not with Trump goading them like this.
Enough is enough
The escalating tension was laid bare last week, when Newsom’s aides chided the commission for getting sideways with his efforts to help LA quickly rebuild from last month’s wildfires. Newsom’s frustration came when the commission released a fact sheet that effectively contradicted his executive order allowing fire victims to rebuild homes and businesses in the burn area without obtaining a coastal permit (often a costly, yearslong process).
Newsom’s administration forced the commission to scrub the fact sheet from its website and called its move “legally erroneous guidance.” And the governor issued another executive order that prohibits the commission from taking any action that “interferes” with his LA reconstruction orders.
The reprimands came after Trump — a developer seemingly speaking from personal experience — headlined a fire recovery roundtable with elected officials and displaced residents in LA where he maligned the commission’s “antics.”
”They are considered the most difficult in the entire country, and we cannot have them play their games and wait 10 years to give somebody a permit,” Trump said.
Everybody is finally sick of the coastal commission’s high handed bullshit, apparently. Now get to work on those desalinization plants.
The Coastal Commission was established to allow the commissars to operate without political influence. This is EXACTLY what they wanted when it was set up.
Yeah, it is the same with the many “public authorities” in the NY area. Somehow the “without political influence” always translates into “monstrous waste and fraud that no one can ever question”.
But he’s still going to prohibit reality-based fire insurance, right?
