IFLA: The “Hole in my Head” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of May 4

Bone grafts: avoid. Though it’s nowhere nearly as painful as I had expected it to be.

I imagine Moj will like this one

Finally, something in the stars to write about. The big one Starts off the week and is fairly subtle, a tierce with the Sun and Mars-Moon, With Jupiter contributing to the Sun leg. This indicates a positive outcome to a disturbing, perhaps violent situation. In other good celestial tidings, Saturday will be a good day to bang. There are a lot of astrological indicators to “have sex now” since Venus is one of the inner planets and interacts with greater frequency than the outer ones. Clients typically appreciate this particular advice, and since a traditional royal astrologer’s duty included making recommendations on the most auspicious days to conceive an heir, it makes scheduling that more convenient.

Taurus: 10 of Swords reversed – Overwhelming defeat, pain, affliction, tears, sadness, desolation.

Gemini: Page of Cups reversed – A waiter/contractor/subordinate makes a mess.

Cancer: Page of Swords – Authority, overseeing, secret service, vigilance, spying, examination.

Leo: 2 of Wands – Things are actually pretty good, but you’re unsatisfied anyway.

Virgo: 4 of Swords – Isolation, breakdown in communications.

Libra: 4 of Wands reversed – Prosperity, increase, felicity, beauty, embellishment.

Scorpio: The High Priestess reversed – Passion, moral or physical ardor, conceit, surface knowledge.

Sagittarius: 7 of Wands – This is about someone successfully preventing an action that they would not have been expected to. Is it you? Is it in opposition to you? Can’t tell.

Capricorn: 9 of Coins – Prudence, safety, success, accomplishment, certitude, discernment.

Aquarius: 5 of Wands – Games, competition, bathhouse.

Pisces: Ace of Cups reversed – Severely misreading a situation to believe it more favorable than it is.

Aries: Page of Wands reversed – Anecdotes, announcements, evil news, indecisio, instability.

Sagittarius: 7 of Wands – This is about someone successfully preventing an action that they would not have been expected to. Is it you? Is it in opposition to you? Can’t tell.

This would require someone to prevent me from doing nothing.

I mean…you’re not even making this fun for me…

Nope. I don’t go out to eat, I’m not having any work done on the house, and I don’t have any subordinates. Not even orphan slave labor. 🙁

Bagger at the grocery breaks your eggs?

      • Ted S.

        That’s what self-checkout is for.

And I just bought two dozen eggs on Friday at Sam’s Club.

  4. Suthenboy

Ha! Turns out all knowledge is surface knowledge. It’s like peeling the layers on an onion.

  5. Suthenboy

    “…have sex now…”
I am starting to think this astrology stuff is generalized to the point that it can never be wrong. ‘Have sex now’ is only good advice on two occasions: when the sun is shining and when….well, you get it.

    • Suthenboy

That reminds me…yesterday talking to my brother – “Hey, nephew no.1, is he thinking of getting married? Anything?”
Brother: “He has made some noise about it but they had a setback they are dealing with now. We will see.”
Me: “Ya know, you spend the first part of their life trying to make sure they keep their pants on but at some point you have to stand up and say ‘Hey bud, you need to get busy’.
My brother thought that was hilarious.

I’m days late. Thursday nights Glibflix choice was a banger.

      Soundtrack alone makes it memorable.

The short with the flight crew turning into zombies with Don Felders ‘Taking a Ride’ is possibly my favorite bit.

I learned long ago that good enough is good enough. Not sure if that’s an Iron Law, but it should be.

Got the bees installed yesterday, it’s warm (high 70s) today and the critters are out looking for the non-existing flowers. I’m guessing they’ll find some pollen on the maples/oaks/aspen. Next 10 days looks very nice, summer like.

We had some frames left over with honey plus they got fed a bunch of corn syrup yesterday, plenty to eat and they need to do some housecleaning before the queen gets in their little faces.

    • Suthenboy

5 year old fell in love with bees last week. He was scared of them but I put a tiny bit of honey on my finger and offered it to a bee that was buzzing around. The bee started eating the honey and I said “See. If you are nice to them, they are nice to you. Look at her really close.”
He leaned in watched the bee eating with his nose about three inches from her. God, I wish my eyes could still do that.
“Look at her little round fuzzy body and big eyes. She is a tiny little teddy bear with wings. She eats flowers and makes honey. Bees are like little fairy tale creatures come to life.”

He hasn’t been able to stay away from the bees and is no longer scared of them.

We had an astounding out-of-season rain today. The electro-gauge says 0.17 inches. Generally in May we get zero point zero inches of rain.

There’s nothing like the smell of the desert after a rain, either.

    • Suthenboy

Yeah that one wasn’t milked out yet. But I understand, he is going to be busy being pope.

      • Fourscore

The problem is that now a lot of folks don’t trust or believe America’s BS Artist. There’s a saturation point.

We’ve all known folks whose stories are beyond belief and so we don’t believe anything they say. The “Cry Wolf” syndrome.

We could see the evidence with Biden, Trump thinks he’s too slick for us or takes us for fools. In either case he’s wrong.

      • Suthenboy

He is the flip side of the professional pols. When they say “We are gonna get to the bottom of this!” or “We are going to cut the waste/budget/fraud etc” you are supposed to know they are lying.
With Trump he says ridiculous things that you are supposed to know he is trolling. No serious person thinks he is actually going to be pope or run for a third term. It is a handy way to smoke out the right people.

      • Chipping Pioneer

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Taurus: 10 of Swords reversed – Overwhelming defeat, pain, affliction, tears, sadness, desolation.

Damn. I’d say that resembles my inner self *most* of the time, but I’ve actually been doing rather well lately, in my own way. I got a chill full-time gig after three months fallow, a remarkable win for me. It’s silly (grocery) factory work, but it’s got a schedule and it pays! (Very little.)

The voca rehab people and I have checked boxes and I’m gonna meet my kinda-case officer in the coming weeks. Initial talks showed I’m kinda a happy unicorn in their world, a quite disabled dude who actually has talent and can do shit. (I’m only talented in limited ways. I can be shockingly dumb at all sorts of simple shit. Even pre-Incident.)

In my own odd world, I really am doing quite well. I’m holding the fort with stable, though trivial, employment, and I’ve wound the machinating gears to potentially slot me into work with potential for professional growth. The year should be interesting, moving onward. ‘May you live in interesting times’ is, indeed, a curse, but overlooked: You’re still alive. Make the most of it. Even when the “interesting” are … interesting(!), there’s always something.

My persistent chipperness has greatly benefited me, IMO. I’d say I’ve reversed the Reversed Swords. (I straightened the sword. Super sexual.) Always a pleasure to throw Life a curve, which it deserves and expects it. Bitch really does have it coming.

  12. Aloysious

That reminds me of a song: There’s a hole in my head dear Liza dear Liza

    or something like that.

Another one of these “Royal Kingdom” commercials and I am going to put a hole in my head. That is all.

      • Tres Cool

Just no Possum Kingdom or Ill be the next one with a hole in my head.

Wow. Wild Kingdom…that is some serious nostalgia that brings back some memories. There should be an ad break in that with Euell Gibbons gnawing on some pine bark.

Libra: 4 of Wands reversed – Prosperity, increase, felicity, beauty, embellishment.

Well good: I spent most of today trying to fix the awful structure of my detached garage in preparation for new siding. Hopefully I can “embellish” the appearance and have an “increase” in durability for another decade or so.

Got the frame of the man-door replaced, then started doing the same for the garage door frame and discovered that a big section of the beam over the opening (the “header” I think it’s called?) is almost entirely rotted away and/or eaten by bugs. Thankfully it looks like the rot/bugs were only in that middle section that was getting soaked by rain; the rest of the wood looks good. It’s two 2×6 pieces side by side, so I’ll have to replace them one at a time.

I run and lift weights like a madman, so I thought I was physically prepared to handle just about anything, but construction/renovation work is fucking exhausting, and I’m only out there for a few hours every day. Major props to anyone who has done this for a job.

    • slumbrew

      “the man-door”

      These euphemisms…

      • Tres Cool

        Its more subtle than “bussy”.

      • Ted S.

It’s the garage door, so that would be a front-hole, wouldn’t it?

      • Evan from Evansville

If ya hit the button on the front hole and open it all up, does that make it consensual?

I mean. That ‘Vette never woulda dressed like that were it not all moored up. So I gave her a damn-good ridin’. Don’t worry, though. I pulled out. Safely outta the drive.

    • Evan from Evansville

      *Takes notes*

I’m glad I’ve never owned a home. Plenty easy to hide the b̵o̵d̵i̵e̵s̵ ̵o̵r̵p̵h̵a̵n̵s̵ ̵e̵v̵i̵d̵e̵n̵c̵e̵ a̵u̵n̵t̵ p̵r̵o̵s̵t̵i̵t̵u̵t̵e̵ morning paper in an apartment. Why add the fuss?

      • Akira

I don’t blame anyone not wanting to own a home. It’s a ton of work, especially when 1) It was built in a stupid way to begin with that was going to result in water leakage issues, and 2) I knew it was fucked up but waited too long to do something about it.

… But if I “build back better” (just invented that myself!) I’m hoping it should last a lot longer and only require the regular replacement of finite-lifespan stuff (roof, siding, etc). I think I have it figured out how to install the proper flashing and overhangs so that we won’t have structural elements turning into a termite buffet anymore.

Speaking of the roof, there are at least two layers of old shingles under the new ones… Meaning they didn’t tear off the old shingles first; just nailed on the new ones. But that project will be next in line after I’ve fixed the frame of the structure.

I do indeed love Extreme. Thanks, NA!

  17. Mojeaux

I’mma Brooks this because it’s hours gone and I have things to say to @slumbrew and @Beau Knott above, @SDF-7, @Zwak, @GT, @Tater, @Suthen, @cav973, which is, THANK YOU AGAIN!

I grabbed Mercedes Lackey’s fairy tales, Butcher’s first Dresden Files, and Gladstone’s first Craft Sequence to start figuring out if somebody else did my ideas first.

Now I still have to write this shit, though.

    • UnCivilServant

I find this fascinating, the glimpse at another creative’s workflow. When I want to write in a given genre I have to stop exposing myself to content in that genre, otherwise my own ideas fail to form as my head is full of other people’s work. The absense provides the space to work.

Of course, no two people get their minds working in the same way.

      • Mojeaux

I learned this the hard way. I had a really awesome idea and I was working on it, and during the course of my research, I found that someone else had already done it, AND that they’d done it better than I was doing it. Mine would look almost like a bad copy.

Now if it’s an unfamiliar genre, I want to find out if other people have already done something, so I don’t waste my time.

      • UnCivilServant

I learned long ago – Everything has already been done better. It’s either write my version anyway, or give up.

      • UnCivilServant

My cynical response was too harshly worded. What I meant was I stopped worrying about my awesome idea being done before.

      • Mojeaux

I don’t want to be accused of riding someone else’s coattails, either.

      • rhywun

Everything has already been done better

I’m not a writer – other than some fumbling bad attempts – but that’s one thing I would assume to be the case if I were one.

      • Brochettaward

Have to agree with UCS on this one. Just because it has been done already doesn’t mean there’s not room for your work. It may be best not to expose yourself to anything similar in fact so that you can just do your own thing without outside influence. You aren’t riding someone else’s coattails in anyway to me.

I get your concerns and they are highly practical, but you’re limiting yourself. If you have fans who enjoy your writing and your voice, that may be enough.

    • cavalier973

      You’re welcome.

Also, I recommend re-reading The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis.

He put two things in that book that were, in my opinion, ahead of its time: the Wood between the Worlds, and Charn.

Charn is one of the creepiest places in children’s literature that I’ve ever encountered, and it’s more sci-fi than fantasy, really.

    • Gustave Lytton

      Yes, thanks.

AI hype adjacent and it’s eye roll inducing. The point about Silicon Valley desperately looking for some growth is right. How many tech company still aren’t profitable? Like in a real sense of paying dividend to their owners (stockholders).

      • Gender Traitor

I sympathize with that symptom! I had a terrible time getting to sleep last night because I couldn’t stop coughing! 😖 Finally dropped off and got at least a little bit of sleep.

      • UnCivilServant

I wonder to what extent I’m going to disturb my co-workers with it, since I am in the office and every so often get hit by a bout of phlegm-displacing coughing.

      • Gender Traitor

Pretty well, except I realized last night that I have a PT appointment, a hair appointment, and a baseball game all set for Thursday. The main problem is that the hair appointment would likely make us late for the game, so I’m going to see if I can reschedule at the salon. 🙄
