Saturday Morning Tales From The Gulch Links

by | Jul 5, 2025 | Daily Links | 168 comments

It’s been a delightful week here in Glibs Gulch. It started with a young professor whom I know slightly, her husband, and their kid coming up to the counter of our little café to place an order. The child had on a cute dress and hair decorated with a ribbon. WebDom smiled and said, “Oh, she’s really cute!” The professor looked gobsmacked, then angry, and snarled, “YOU MISGENDERED MY SON!” She paid for her drink, then stomped out angrily.

And we apparently now have weekly demonstrations at out traffic light. A ragtag band of perhaps a dozen people, almost all faculty from the liberal arts school, almost all wearing Birkenstocks, almost all gray haired, paunchy, balding, affluent, and hirsute, holding up home-made signs and chanting. Besides the obligatory TRUMP whining, this week’s demonstration featured many waving Canadian and Mexican flags. I asked one of the motley the significance of that. “It’s to show our support for immigrants against our dictatorship!” I was about to ask about the massive wave of Tim Horton’s fiends stealing across our border to improve their lives by eating Burger King, but then I remembered that I have a business in town, so just smiled and thanked her.

Of course we had the usual entitled folk who order a burrito, then after we make it and serve it to them, ask, “Now, this is gluten-free, right?” I made a Panang curry this week with seitan and assured people that there wasn’t any gluten, it was wheat protein. Liberal arts people are not terribly scientifically literate…

Birthdays today include a guy who was just a shadow of himself; the true spiritual father of Donald Trump; a guy who could have been Kelvin; a guy who said, “I think I Kann, I think I Kann!”; another of the hereditary morons who dominate New England politics; one of my personal heroes (and obligatory reading if you want to understand anything about biology); the best parts of Brazil and Soap; a fine actress who was wonderful in the most infuriating film ever made; a guy whose fielding was so bad, his nickname was Clank;  a guy who would be happy to string you along; and arguably the greatest comic strip auteur of all time (“Imagine Walt Kelly, but actually funny.”).

And just as funny are the Links.

The Porkfest is complete, hold on to your wallet. “The era of big government is over” was accurate- now we have the era of yuuuuge government.

And here’s the best explanation.

Think of it as evolution in action.

Can they both lose? Please?

My eternal question eternally ignored- how about we SELL them instead of paying for them ourselves?

“The leadership of the occupation, supported by America and the West, will have to submit to our just demands,” he said from amidst the rubble.

It’s not anti-semitic, you see. No, of course not. Totally different. We just like to kill Jews.

The always-reliable useful idiots.

OMG HE REFERENCED SHAKESPEARE IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH!

Great covers say something new about the song rather than slavishly copy. The Old Guy avers that this is a great cover of a great song.

That kid sounds way too young to be a femboy.

  3. Ted S.

    ¡Happy birthday Ricardo Montalbán!

“We are not at any lower point, stockpile-wise, than we’ve been in the three and a half years of the Ukraine conflict,” Smith said.
So the US has been low for years.

    • Drake

Yes. Lower now that we are resupplying Israel.

That stuff isn’t cheap. We shouldn’t give it to anyone other than our own forces.

      • Pat

Or, we commoditize it by selling it to anyone with enough money who we’re reasonably sure won’t use it against us, and then demand takes care of supply and vice versa.

      • Drake

Cash on the barrelhead as they used to say.

They made a joke on The Office 20 years ago (!!) about a woman bringing her newborn son to the office dressed in pink, getting offended when one of the characters says “She’s adorable!” and stating that “Pink is his favorite color.”

a guy who would be happy to string you along

    Happy birthday Jascha Heifetz!

the true spiritual father of Donald Trump

But I thought Hitler’s birthday was on the funny weed number day?

      Happy birthday Larry Flint?

assured people that there wasn’t any gluten, it was wheat protein.

I assume you also ensured they imbibed dihydrogen monoxide with it, you monster!

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Sounds delish. I’d ask for a recipe, OMWC, but 1) too much effort for you and b) it probably serves dozens.

      • Old Man With Candy

It’s actually super easy. The RIGHT way to do it is outlined in Victor Sodsook’s True Thai. And if I were making it for the family, that’s what I’d do. But making it for our audience here…? I cheat and stir fry a bunch of Aroy-D Panang Curry Paste, add coconut milk, cook for a bit more, then adjust salt-sweet-sour balance with Bragg Aminos, tamarind paste, and palm sugar. Then add vegetables and tofu or seitan.

      • Old Man With Candy

Oh, and as usual, I forgot something- my secret ingredients. After adding coconut milk and bringing it back to a boil, add a can of pineapple chunks in juice, along with the juice. If I feel generous, I’ll toss in some cashews just before serving. Ditto some Thai basil if we have any that’s not wilted.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

Thank you. I have some palm sugar and A-D (or Mae Ploy?) green curry paste that date back to the Obama administration. Bet the sugar is still good.

      • Old Man With Candy

I have no brand loyalty between Mae Ploy and Aro-D, I just use (for any given curry type, red, green, yellow, whatever) whichever doesn’t have seafood in it. And increase the suggested amount as a proportion.

    • Evan from Evansville

Hear, here, to Waterson. Key figure in my youth, culturally. Taught me to read past Dr Seuss, also a saint.

The art alone is incredible. I’d sneak into check all the time. Will give to the 4yo soon, once I find em in ‘storage.’

  10. Common Tater

    “gargle with chlorine dioxide”

That doesn’t sound completely insane. It is a disinfectant. Not that different than gargling hydrogen peroxide.

    • Common Tater

“Fiona O’Leary, an anti-chlorine dioxide campaigner, said she told managers of Trump National Doral of her concerns about the Truth Seekers event in a failed bid to get it cancelled.”

It’s always censorship with these assholes. Instead, explain why using bleach to cure autism and HIV is retarded.

  11. Pat

    The Porkfest is complete

I was about to correct you with *Porcfest, but that’s something else entirely.

    • SDF-7

At least they’re honest… we the people get a big, big bill. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course. (Or is that petrification and stun are in the eyes of the beholder?)

  12. SDF-7

arguably the greatest comic strip auteur of all time

I (unsurprisingly given you mentioned Kelly) guessed it, and absolutely can not dissent. One of my favorite strips, and huge respect for the man as an artist just trying to follow his muse, not sell out — and knowing when to quit.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Think how well Hobbes dolls would have sold, though.

    • R C Dean

Kelly is definitely on the short list, but if I had to pick one, it would be Watterson.

  13. Pat

Protip for the Deadline: connivence is actually spelled connivance. If you want to use a 10 cent word to prove you took those 100 level English classes in J school, invest in a word processor with spellcheck.

  14. SDF-7

    The always-reliable useful idiots.

While I agree that relying on “Gaza doctors” is just repeating propaganda (just like every building seems to be a “hospital” or a “school” that oddly seems to co-habitate with a military encampment)… all I can think of is how humanity survived before formula… “Are there no breasts? Are there no wet nurses?”

    • Common Tater

I’m sure Q will post here later.

    • Pat

All the lactating women in Gaza were already killed 2 or 3 times by the filthy Jew pigs Zionist IDF occupiers.

    • (((Jarflax

You have to allow women enough to eat if you want them to lactate. That wastes food that could otherwise be used to build up stores in the tunnels, and handed out to potential recruits in the madrassas.

  15. SDF-7

OMG HE REFERENCED SHAKESPEARE IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH!

I’d wish folks would find religion again so they could calm down about politics (their current religion)… except radical Islam seems to be what they’re moving to next (I suppose fusing politics and religion as it does makes it the obvious choice) and that’s not going to be good either.

But it should would be nice to be able to think “Once OMB is out maybe they won’t go nuts on every point”… without immediately realizing they most certainly still will. Regardless of how milk toast their opponent really is.

    • Rat on a train

Since Republicans reached literally Hitler with Trump, I predict the rise of super Hitlers.

      • SDF-7

I never expected the Dragon Ball Z model of politics… “He’s gone Super Saiyan Hitler!!”

      • Ownbestenemy

Or full blown Idiocracy with hosting a UFC at the WH. If they had a sense of humor, they’d call it Rehabilitation

  16. Pat

OMG HE REFERENCED SHAKESPEARE IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH!

While he was using it in the same sense one might use “chiseler,” for example, I’d still probably avoid the term in formal discourse or public oratory. Per usual, it’s always fun watching the keffiyeh-wearing retards who chant “From the river to the sea” at their weekly totally not antisemitic protests opposing the filthy Jew pigs Zionism sling accusations of racism against the bad orange man with Jewish grandchildren…

    • Ownbestenemy

Its more amazing to watch a press that invented the Uncle Joe narrative out of wholecloth with Biden suddenly take every word and utterence spoken through the lens of Trump=Hitler.

I know, its not new…its always been there, its just surprising that they still do it.

      • Ownbestenemy

Roll the tape on Biden’s use of shylock and we get the full picture. Fuck I despise the media, just not enough

      • R C Dean

On Substack, I’m seeing posts now about how Trump totally has dementia and here’s the proof!

I haven’t actually clicked through and read them.

Substack’s feed is interesting. I kinda like it. It cycles through stuff I haven’t clicked through on (this week was lefty frothing and, uhh, survivalist stuff). The Jews-are-totally-genociding-innocent-Palis posts seem to be dying back.

Not that I would ever judge, lest I be judged, but it’s kind of hard to square making a living showing skin to horny boys with “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.”

The ordeal began at 3:53 a.m. when police responded to a report of a person who was shot at the 7 Elements restaurant, bar and lounge on 11th Street and Washington Avenue.

When police arrived, they discovered three people who were suffering from gunshot wounds. Police took the victims to area hospitals. Philadelphia Police Inspector D F Pace initially told NBC10 at least eight more victims from the shooting were also taken to various hospitals, bringing the total number of victims to 11. Overpenetration?

Improper counting of shots by bystanders? I’m going with the latter. Earwitnesses are unreliable.

      • EvilSheldon

The really high body counts tend to be when the shooter locks down the area and spends his time shooting all his victims in the head while the cops are ‘securing the perimeter.’

This sounds more like gangbangers hitting a rival in a crowded bar. Lots of peripheral hits.

    • Threedoor

      Only two in critical.
It’s a good thing the sub 80IQ crowd dosent but good ammo. They steal the cheep stuff.

I wish more companies would say “California isn’t worth the hassle to do business with.”

Stop giving money and guns to that tin pot grifter in Ukraine. Just stop.

“It has been revealed that Oregon State Hospital, the state’s highest security psychiatric facility, distributes taxpayer-funded sex toys to its patients, according to a local news investigation.

The report from KGW found that the state-run hospital dispersed 65 sex toys to patients in 2024 at the cost of $2,900, while 42 sex toys were provided to patients the year prior.

Oregon State Hospital predominantly houses criminal mentally ill patients who were deemed unfit to stand trial or found guilty except for insanity on charges ranging from misdemeanors to serious violent crimes such as murder and sex offenses.

Patients are able to access a wide variety of sex toys with brand names such as Throttle Stroker, Her Pocket Bullet, The Vortex, Vibrating Helping Hand Pro, Vibrating Shower Stroker, Double Dancer, and Waterproof Prostate Massager, according to a 10-page catalog obtained through a public records request. A hospital spokesperson, Amber Shoebridge, told the network that these sex toys are paid for with public tax dollars, which range in price from $14.78 to $84.99.”

Several neighbors wasted a lot of money on fireworks last night, which was fine by me. They all kind of overlapped and it turned into about a 45 minute show. Apparently most Indiana people aren’t exactly trembling under the fear of Trump’s authoritarian tendencies.

I went to a 4th of July cookout at Prime’s best friends’ place. Some folks I’d met before, some folks new to me, all very nice people. There was an occasion ignorant political comment, but rare, mostly people being human. A snatch of overheard conversation among the 3-4 kids (20-30 y.o.) who were there was a bit disturbing, but performative fashion-grade antisemitism is something I’ve largely gotten accustomed to.

      • Old Man With Candy

Oh, and some really loud and totally illegal fireworks at the end, procured across state lines.

    • Threedoor

The local shoe and the locals putting on the show were bigger than I’ve seen since I was a kid.

The little people enjoyed it immensely.

    • The Other Kevin

As I sat on the porch watching the booms, it occurred to me how worried I was over the last few years about our government going after people for their political and religious beliefs, and how I’m no longer worried about those things on a daily basis. At least for now, it’s nice. When I feel myself sympathizing for “the other side”, I remind myself they are the people who wanted to shut people out of society and deny them health care over taking a vaccine. I had to worry for four years, now it’s their turn to deal with it.

The escalation spiral we’re in is discomforting, but it is nice to have a reprieve from being on the receiving end of it.

    • RAHeinlein

      That estate tax is insane:

“The first $3 million of an estate’s value will be exempt from the tax, but estates exceeding that amount will face progressively higher tax rates, up to the maximum of 35%”

      • Common Tater

        That sucks for farms.

      • Threedoor

You get to keep the farm house, grandpas pickup and the old depreciated R6 combine that dosent work.

    It’s, like, scientific consensus, man

Shylock was the greedy Jewish moneylender and main antagonist in Shakespeare’s classic 1600 play “The Merchant of Venice.” Amy Spitalnick, the CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said Thursday in a post on X the term remains “among the most quintessential antisemitic stereotypes.”

    There it is. Case closed.

    • (((Jarflax

Yes, the guy, with the Jewish kid and grandkids, cutting funding to the schools that terrorized Jewish students and celebrated Hamas’ rape and murder is the real anti-semite. Keep voting blue geniuses. I’m sure nothing bad will come from it.

      • Suthenboy

I wonder what Spitalnik had to say about Trump’s moving the embassy to Jerusalem.

  41. The Late P Brooks

no going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker, and in some cases, shylocks and bad people.

He’s stealing Elizabeth Warren’s material. Except I don’t think she ever called a banker “fine”.

  42. The Late P Brooks

“This is not an accident,” Spitalnick wrote in her social media post. “It follows years in which Trump has normalized antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories — and it’s deeply dangerous.”

Yes, yes, of course. A blind man could see it.

Democratic lawmakers denied entry to “Alligator Alcatraz”.

Any dictator worth his salt would let them in and keep them there. Do better, Trump.

The child had on a cute dress and hair decorated with a ribbon. WebDom smiled and said, “Oh, she’s really cute!” The professor looked gobsmacked, then angry, and snarled, “YOU MISGENDERED MY SON!”

While I believe you, part of me keeps thinking there is no way that’s real.

People have lost their damn minds.

  45. The Late P Brooks

I’m still trying to figure out if it was a boy in a dress or a girl in a dress who wants to be a boy in a dress.

I’m too old for this shit.

    • ron73440

Had,xt thought of it that way.

I assumed it was a boy in a dress, but who knows anymore.

Either way it’s like a vegan cat, we know who’s making the choices.

    • (((Jarflax

It’s a kid with drug abuse, mental illness and self harm in its future whichever it is.

        I’m a boy, I’m a boy, but my ma won’t admit it 🎶

OMWC….and everyone else: I remember when anti-semitism was a relic. It seemed impossible that it would ever come back. It was only expressed amongst people who were a special kind of stupid. The kind of people who were not only dumb but very damaged. The kind of people who joined skin-head groups. I grew up with a great many people that had seen and participated in WW2. The TV was WW2 all the time. It seemed all the movies were WW2. If there were a lot of people that held anti-semitic views they were too ashamed to admit it.

What I see going down through the ages are the same kinds of people taking the same moronic views over and over…in today’s case our leftists. What I notice about them is a common stupidity and lack of self-awareness. It really is striking to me, or maybe I am just seeing what I want to see. In any case I have yet to have anyone explain to me in a coherent, sensible way what the source of Jew-hate is.

I post this in response to OMWC saying he has become accustomed to anti-semitism. This is not the world I grew up in.

    • creech

Envy. And the belief that only some devilish “outsider” could be clever enough to fool and manipulate those other folks in your group (who are obviously too stupid to see what the “outsider’s” real end game is.)

    • trshmnstr

It’s a combination of two things.

One is a reflexive move to the exact opposite of the taboos of the day. “Oh, Jews are untouchable? Well, let me touch them as much and as roughly as I can.”

The other is an outpouring of economic despair on a successful minority group. Thomas sowell had lots to write about that.

      • Threedoor

        Yep.

    • Threedoor

Even the local ‘skinheads’ pretty much played at racism.

They were drug dealers that got along just fine with the Mexican and Indian traffickers and users.

They had a compound and marched with their swastikas.

If anything they kept California out of Coeur d’Alene and northern Idaho for a time.
