I am too often reminded of two basic truths: 1-People are monsters. 2-At least they will self-identify.

This is my review of TRVE Brewing When Its Cold & When its Dark Black IPA:

Let me tell you, it’s is unbelievably difficult to find something else to talk about this week. Forgive me if I chose something a bit more tangential. (TW: CNN)

Whether users wanted to see them or not, videos of horrific moments have been flooding social media feeds over the past week. These videos have reignited calls for tech giants to exert more control over how content appears on their platforms as some companies have scaled back their moderation efforts.

Each platform has its own content rules, especially around particularly violent content. Most allow some violent content but place restrictions on especially gory and bloody videos and restrict such content from younger users.

By default, social media sites like X, TikTok and Facebook autoplay videos as users scroll, a tactic to immediately grab their attention, unless the platform has designated them as restricted. YouTube also autoplays non-restricted content when users hover over the video while scrolling.

This person is serious. What about the children?

Mainstream media, like CNN, usually implement strict standards that prevent airing or showing such graphic moments on TV or on their other platforms. These outlets will often edit videos and use other techniques, like blurring, to protect viewers and the victims. But on social media, where more than half of US adults say they get at least some of their news, there are no broad standards everyone follows.

Medical experts warn that being exposed to traumatic and graphic moments can cause “vicarious trauma,” where one absorbs the trauma experienced by others, which can directly impact people’s mental and physical health.

Will someone PLEASE think of the children!?

Nobody wanted Iryna to get stabbed and even those that wished harm on Charlie didn’t want to watch it repeatedly, censoring it on behalf of the squeamish is every bit the same evil as those calling to stop “disinformation” a few years ago. If free speech is to continue to be valued, and if the direction we must take is the “consequences” of free speech result in violence, every gruesome or horrifying thing needs to be available to everyone. Lest your children and perhaps you be underserved and unprepared for the monsters that populate the world.

You must watch dear, it’ll all be over soon.”

A dark topic requires a dark beer? Maybe whiskey is the better call here, but maybe not. Black IPA remains an unusual choice for those that still want something hoppy, but without the intense palate cleansing quality. Balance is key to everything, somehow the hipsters that came up with the idea perhaps unwittingly created balance. I just don’t get why this is as unpopular as it is. Perhaps I am the monster? I don’t think that’s what pale means?

    • DEG

The traditional English IPAs I’ve had are a little darker than pale ales and a little darker than many American IPAs I’ve seen.

They aren’t as dark as this beer.

    • mexican sharpshooter

Sure, but what does black mean to you?

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

The Pale of Settlement[a] was a western region of the Russian Empire with varying borders that existed from 1791 to 1917 (de facto until 1915) in which permanent residency by Jews was allowed and beyond which Jewish residency, permanent or temporary,[1] was mostly forbidden.

If something is “beyond the pale”, it refers to being outside the land approved for settlement.

That is what you mean, no?

  2. Common Tater

I haven’t seen either video. I don’t need to because I have no doubt about what happened.

    • SDF-7

Same. I can imagine it just fine from what I’ve heard — I have no need to actually see it.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

If you’re even slightly squimish that’s a good move.

      • Common Tater

Not squeamish at all, but I wouldn’t enjoy it, and it would tell me nothing.

    • The Last American Hero

I have watched both and believe it’s important to do so, especially when progressive voices with loud megaphones deny that the Trump assassination even occurred or believe that it was a carefully crafted setup to galvanize his base.

      • Common Tater

I saw that one. No accounting for crazy people, I don’t think anyone is denying both of those people were murdered.

    • The Other Kevin

I have not seen either murder videos from this week. I’m not going to. I tend to obsess over things, and either of those would occupy too much space in my mind. And it would take way too long to fade away.

      • Nephilium

As I said last night, I never thought saying “I don’t want to watch a snuff film.” would be a controversial opinion.

  3. The Late P Brooks

Medical experts warn that being exposed to traumatic and graphic moments can cause “vicarious trauma,” where one absorbs the trauma experienced by others, which can directly impact people’s mental and physical health.

    Also, cameras steal your soul.

    • (((Jarflax

Meh, seeing horrific things does horrify people. That is at least to some degree traumatic. I know watching these videos this week had an impact on me. The part I think is stupid is the notion that one should be entirely insulated from trauma. It’s a cruel world we live in and between being traumatized occasionally or being blissfully unaware of dangers I think you’re better off with the trauma.

      • Brochettaward

Eh…I find the people who see videos or pictures of traumatic shit and make it about themselves narcissistic in general. I’m reminded of a story. I had a professor who focused on the Holocaust in college. He went to some conference with other teachers and was doing his thing – showing the horrific shit the Nazis had done. Grown adult professors attacked him for it and said that he had traumitized them by showing them such graphic content.

He relayed that story to us as a class and everyone agreed they were douchy cunts.

There’s a reason to show content like this unfiltered. It’s so people see just how horrific people can be and learn from it.

      • Gender Traitor

        Paging Mathew Brady.

      • (((Jarflax

There’s a reason to show content like this unfiltered. It’s so people see just how horrific people can be and learn from it.’

That’s pretty much what I was saying.

There’s a reason to show content like this unfiltered. It’s so people see just how horrific people can be and learn from it.

When he’s right he’s right. Although when he’s wrong he’s first.

      • Nephilium

        Brochettaward:

I already believe that humanity can be monstrous. I don’t need more confirmation.

However, I don’t think the video should be banned, and I do appreciate the warnings I’ve seen when linking to it (so I knew enough NOT to click on it).

    • dbleagle

David Hogg enters the chat with his weaselly grin.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Yes, but there is an image of the murderer burned onto the retina of your eyes!

  4. Common Tater

Also, clever title. I think that’s why his murder goes beyond politics. Ball games have announced moments of silence. It’s that even though his work was political, overall his ideas were very vanilla — basic beliefs most Americans hold.

    • (((Jarflax

That is part of it I am sure, but I think the juxtaposition with Iryna which showed the normies how shallow the compassion of the left is as they soft pedaled denouncing the murder in favor of denouncing people for showing the murderer, and the dark irony of a man being assassinated for calmly debating his opponents while actually doing so is what really set people off. If this were a script for a propaganda movie it would be criticized as too heavy handed

    • The Last American Hero

No way that shit happens in a Harris-Walz administration. Of course, under Harris-Walz, he might not have been allowed on college campuses.

    • SDF-7

Israel buys Greenland instead of us and ships all the Gazans there?

You didn’t say a good endgame, after all…

    • The Last American Hero

Still pulling for the Adam Corrolla solution – leave the Middle East, take the top 2 inches of soil from Israel in shipping containers. Spread it on the Baja Peninsula.

Give it one generation and Mexico will be a prosperous country, the cartels will be brought to heel, and the Middle East tribes can continue to tear each other to pieces.

‘Sources say’ — so large grain of salt until harder evidence… but if so — barring him being on track to be a DC Congressional Republican (according to different sources), this should shut down the “He was hardcore MAGA blaaag!” storyline, I would expect.

    • Common Tater

Who knows? So far everyone who knew claims he was an angry leftist dipshit. Regardless, a person can be MAGA and have a trans gf.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

        Possible yes likely no.

  6. Brochettaward

BBC is saying that “thousands” are taking part in the Unite the Kingdom protests. I’ve seen reports of up to 3 million people.

Not sure what the actual number is, but I’m sure the BBC is downplaying it. And describing Tommy Robinson as “far-right.” I was sick of that label a decade ago. Now it’s a badge of honor. Everyone who isn’t a fucking prog is far-right at this point.

In other news, people on social media instantly cheered and wished that “far-right” author JK Rowling would be next after Kirk.

    • SDF-7

If I lived in the UK — the Beeb would be roughly as respected as Pravda at this point.

And yeah — Thursday there were screen captures of tweets / Reddits of whole lists of “Wish they were next”. At least they’re make it clear who and what they are.

    • Nephilium

Considering I’m going to be in London in three weeks, I’m keeping an eye on the situation over there.

    • Common Tater

      JK Rowling is a lefty.

      • rhywun

With one minor difference that upsets “trantifa”.

      • Brochettaward

Yes. I was making a point there.

      • (((Jarflax

She is the kind of lefty that we can coexist with because she forms her own opinions and considers evidence rather than following doctrine. The fact that she disagrees with me on most issues pales in comparison to that one key element.

    • Akira

I did see on France24 this morning that they characterized them as “extreme right”. I only understand about 25% of spoken frog-language, but all I saw were a bunch of people waving British, English, or Scottish flags.

      • Nephilium

“Raising the flag and singing the anthem are, while somewhat suspicious, not in themselves acts of treason.”

      • rhywun

Love of country is now far-right white supremacy. Try to keep up.

    • Evan from Evansville

Wow/sigh. BBC: “More than 100,000 people have joined a march in central London organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, with a counter-protest by anti-racism campaigners also taking place.”

OK. So Tommy Robinson and his 100k are the PRO-racist protesters. And the good-thinkin’ folk are obviously proper-thinking folk. Yay.

      No point, that war’s lost.

    • Drake

Why does anyone think that hurts Russia more than Europe?

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

It doesn’t. Europe is trying to have it both ways, and too many people have been killed in the Ukraine as it is?

If free speech is to continue to be valued, and if the direction we must take is the “consequences” of free speech result in violence, every gruesome or horrifying thing needs to be available to everyone.

    Yes.

And full disclosure: I watched both the Iryna murder video and Charlie Kirk murder video.

I’m not exactly thrilled to see left wingers ratted out to the Stasi any more than I am right wingers.

I don’t like it either but if both sides have to live up to the same standards maybe those standards will change.

  9. The Late P Brooks

Mainstream media, like CNN, usually implement strict standards that prevent airing or showing such graphic moments on TV or on their other platforms.

They worked hard to become the gatekeepers of “legitimate” news, and they won’t give it up without a struggle.

    • juris imprudent

Charlie Kirk, Charlie Hebdo – it’s all the same to them.

  11. The Late P Brooks

    Unintended consequences?

“When you try to silence a voice like this, they don’t go away – you only amplify it,” the second-year student said. “There are now going to be a million Charlie Kirks, and I feel like that’s the thing that we need to do.”

As the immediate shock of the attack calms, some at Utah Valley University said it has been replaced with a deep sense of resolve to continue what Kirk began.

Students with various political ideologies – including those vehemently opposed to Kirk’s beliefs – told the BBC they’ve felt a personal sense of responsibility to ensure healthy debates on college campuses continue.

Cut off the head, and seven grow back.

    Let’s hope.

I knew nothing about Kirk, but if what everybody says is true (and I believe it) maybe his political opponents hated him specifically for his reasonableness, which made it hard to dismiss him as a fire breathing lunatic.

  12. Gustave Lytton

9am kickoff for football? Totally lost the plot. Fuck the D1pshits.

    • mexican sharpshooter

I actually kind of liked that in Hawaii. The sports bars serve breakfast.

    • The Last American Hero

Fun fact, West Coast teams playing the early game give up 2-3 points for the time change. It doesn’t happen when East Coast travels west.

The reason is that players are so keyed up the night before and are sleeping in a hotel room in a strange bed that they often don’t sleep well. If you travel the other way, there is the whole day to nap and feel somewhat refreshed before kickoff.

Yet the NFL and NCAA don’t schedule the West Coast teams for the afternoon or evening games. Bastards.

      • mexican sharpshooter

More east coast bias in sports!

      • Gustave Lytton

“But if we just schedule early games, fuck our actual fan, we”l attract east coast audience that already supports other, local teams”

  13. The Late P Brooks

Kirk, who had millions of followers online, would often tour college campuses across the country to debate issues like gender, race, gun control and immigration. His views – and his confrontational style – often drew criticism from the left and attracted protestors to his on-campus events.

“Confrontational” meaning he declined to accept the talking points of his opponents as given incontrovertible fact?

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Debate and even discussion among those that disagree are confrontational almost by definition. From what I’ve seen he was pretty respectful even when going after the truly stupid/ignorant/vicious.

      • Drake

Extremely respectful to a fault, even to screaming lunatics.

    • Gustave Lytton

Like how my wife’s says I’m arguing if I don’t agree with her.

England has a ‘protect the children’ act for online material. I support it. Children should not see just how badly their government violates their rights and has betrayed their own people and country.

    • Drake

England… Probably protects them from learning they should avoid immigrant rape gangs.

  15. Nephilium

Interestingly enough, the beer that may have been the first black IPA (AKA “Cascadian Dark Ale” when people were offended by “black” being used as a descriptor) was labeled as a porter. Specifically, Avery’s New World Porter, which was hopped to the level of an American IPA. That was a strange time, as everyone was spinning out different variants of IPAs, Black and session were really the only ones to survive after that, I rarely see IPL (India Pale Lagers), White IPAs, Pink IPAs ,or sour IPAs around any more.

    • mexican sharpshooter

Its a lot of hazy IPA and Kölsch around here. I don’t blame them for producing what sells.

      • Nephilium

Hazy IPAs are still popular (not with me, but I’m but one man). Kolsches have been becoming more popular recently, which makes me happy, as I’m a big fan.

  16. Sensei

The joy of trying to find a speciality audio cable. I want an 4 pin XLR extension in 3 feet. I don’t want some $100 boutique ultra pure silver coated cable. I just want a well made cable with proper construction and a reasonable sized conductor. It’s for “balanced” headphones meaning the L and R minus are separate.

    • Sensei

      Third time the charm.

Buy the $10 and $7 Neutrik connectors I should have in the first place and make my own cable

      https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CMCJYWN1

Bonus they make the nicest XLR connectors. So much nicer than the Chinese clones. They really are a pleasure to use.

However I’m now like 50% of the way to the audiofool custom cables that use the same connectors.

      • Common Tater

The strain relief on Neutrik is better than Switchcraft.

      • Sensei

Switchcraft aren’t especially popular in the home HiFi crowd.

For professional use I can see why you’d want to avoid $10 connectors as you have quite a few on stage. OTH, you just want them to both work and take an absolute beating. Everybody swears by Neutrik’s stuff.

  17. The Late P Brooks

Doublethink is a right wing myth

The program requires refineries, power plants, oil wells and landfills to report their emissions without risk of penalty as officials seek to identify high-polluting facilities and develop policies to lower emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Experts say the reporting held the companies publicly accountable for their emissions.

    ——-

But experts say dropping the requirement — as Zeldin promised in March when he unleashed what he called the greatest day of deregulation in U.S. history — risks a big increase in emissions, since companies would no longer be publicly accountable for what they discharge into the air. And they say losing the data — at the same time the EPA is cutting air quality monitoring elsewhere — would make it tougher to fight climate change.

Anything you say can and will be used against you.

    • mexican sharpshooter

Amazing how that society produced AC/DC.

      • Akira

    • The Other Kevin

I’m pivoting away from trans people having a mental illness that causes them to do horrible things, to trans people tending to be indoctrinated lefties, which causes them to do horrible things.

      • UnCivilServant

Glorious victory over the forces of darkness

In a historic victory for California YIMBY and the YIMBY movement, the California state legislature today voted to pass SB 79, a bill that will make it legal to build more homes near the highest capacity transit stops across California.

    ——-

“With the passage of SB 79 – thanks to our allies and legislative partners – we’re delivering on what we set out to do: more affordable homes, cleaner air, vibrant neighborhoods, and better transit,” Hanlon said. “This is a historic win—and a testament to the growing power of the YIMBY movement.”

Savor the vapid buzzbuzzbuzzword soup. What does that mean? Will the bulldozers roll in behind the eminent domain notices, or is this just some theoretical future and futuristic dreamscape?

    • UnCivilServant

I’m going with “Bulldozers and eminent domain” after all, the legislature passed it.

    • Gustave Lytton

Fuck SFHs and people who thought they were buying in a certain type of neighborhood. Projects for everyone! Walkable cities! Death to car lovers!

I’m sure the folks over at CommieTowns are stroking out over defeating evil zoning masquerading as “deregulation”.

YIMBY = ram shit down that bureaucrats want with astroturfed support

  20. Brochettaward

This one makes me laugh, particularly in light of the Kirk assassination:

A day after Trump had protesters yelling in his face before dinner, former President Joe Biden went out to eat at a different DC restaurant. And guess what? No protesters. Just applause, cheers, selfies, and handshakes.

It’s from the Derpbook which is showing me a lot of left wing pages (constantly has really) with plenty of obnoxious shit about Kirk being a piece of shit.

They take this as some win for Joe Biden/Dems when it in fact reveals what a detached toxic left wing cesspool DC is and how intolerant they are in general.

    • Akira

Gee, the population of Washington DC – being completely dependent on Big Government and the noxious fungus of lobbyists that grow around it – are more friendly to an avowed Big Government guy than the guy who talks the big talk about cutting government?

Also, this is a crappy way to write a sentence: “A day after Trump had protesters yelling in his face before dinner, former President Joe Biden went out to eat at a different DC restaurant.”

      It creates ambiguity between:
      – Trump ordered protesters to yell at Biden, then the next day Biden chose a different restaurant
      – Protesters yelled at Trump, but then the next day Biden dined out with no problems

/ Uncredentialed, unofficial, and unwanted English professor

    • rhywun

Town populated almost entirely by radical leftists cheers radical leftist in their midst. Film at 11.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

It’s well known that the braindead are venerated in DC so no surprise there.

  21. The Other Kevin

Today a few things reminded me that we are in an entirely different country from 2024.

Elon Musk posted the question on X: Should people celebrating Kirk’s death be banned from X? Almost every reply I saw was NO. “Let these people continue to out themselves, and make sure they can’t delete it. Let everyone see it.”

While there are a few assholes disrupting rallies and getting their asses beat, we’re not seeing any rioting and looting from the right. Even though “their guy” is in the White House, and in the Trump is Hitler world people imagine, he’d allow his followers to be violent without repercussions.

There is some “whataboutism” for people getting canceled. Continuing with point 1, nobody is getting censored or banned from social media that I have seen. And I’m not seeing the FBI visit any of these people, nor are they getting swatted (do you think CNN wouldn’t report that if it happened?) The worst I’ve seen is people’s vile posts getting reposted, and their employers getting contacted. It’s still up to the employer to decide to fire the person, or to say “Meh, I don’t care.”

We’re just beginning to see the extent of how bad the Biden admin was for this country.

  22. The Late P Brooks

We’re just beginning to see the extent of how bad the Biden admin was for this country.

But he appointed black women to important positions!

    • dbleagle

Question for the group. Did any of biden’s DEI appointees prove themselves up to the office to which they were appointed? Harris didn’t. Jackson hasn’t. Pete B didn’t. Dude in dress as Surgeon General? Nope. Luggage thief dragster? Nada.

I can’t think of one who when examined you could say. “That person is a good fit for the duties of the position.”

      • Gustave Lytton

Harris was a great fit for an office that’s not even worth a bucket of warm spit.

      • Suthenboy

It was a freakshow that was deliberate and calculated to be completely incompetent. Remember the head of the SS was in Vegas drunk and screwing and only found out Trump had been shot when the press asked her about it.
The entire administration was a giant middle finger to America.

      • creech

The liquid named in the actual quote was not “spit.”

      • The Other Kevin

I can’t think of a single person in that admin that wasn’t either bad at the job (mayor Pete), or outright malicious (Mayorkas, etc.).

  23. The Late P Brooks

I can’t think of one who when examined you could say. “That person is a good fit for the duties of the position.”

Well, let’s see. There was Lloyd Austin.

    No, wait. There was, ummm…

  24. Suthenboy

Bro = what is really funny about the Biden/Trump comparison you mention is that Joe Biden was president like Mordecai was the sheriff in High Plains Drifter. He was no more president than Harris was VP. If Harris was really the VP why didnt she step in when Biden was so obviously demented? She didnt because neither one of them were calling the shots. Those people applauding Biden (I assume it was scripted) knew that very well.
Who was actually calling the shots? We will probably never know but if you make a list of possibles one of them is likely correct. I wonder how much Brussels had to do with it? Obama? The WEF? In any case it is the biggest travesty in our history and not by a little bit.

Who was actually calling the shots?

The fact that it wasn’t the president is criminal enough without even knowing the answer.

It was someone or another from the Deep State – ya know, that organization that is simultaneously a crazy conspiracy theory AND a beneficial cadre of wise political leaders who work to save us from the scourge of Donald Trump.

Same reason Buttglug didn’t resign to spend time with family. Or was fired when he took leave instead of immediately resigning.

I don’t think it was one person. Look at the Democrat leadership right now. There is none. Like George Carlin said, you don’t need a conspiracy when everyone is on the same page. What passes for “leadership” in the party is just high profile individuals catering to the far left. I think that’s how the Biden admin was. Just a bunch of people, many of them holdovers from Obama, doing what they knew they had to do to support the Democrat party and the deep state.

My anti-Israeli brother pointed out how it’s been 3 days and we know more about the guy who shot Charlie Kirk than the one who tried to wack Trump (he thinks the entire thing was staged).

He’s not wrong. Something remains very weird about the assassination attempt. I’m not saying it was staged, but the entire thing was swept under the rug and no real questions were ever asked about who the kid was or what motivated him.

The incuriosity has been strange but it does honestly look like it was a lone nutjob who decided to take a shot. The feds cleaning up the crime scene the day after (the same day?) and the quick creamation sans autopsy do look fishy though.

‘Looks fishy’. Yeah, that is one way to put it.

It isnt just the shooting in Butler. I think nearly everything we are fed is bullshit.
