Sunday Morning Drowning in Retards Links

by | Sep 14, 2025 | Daily Links | 208 comments

For a community that is dominated by scholars (or “scholars,” more accurately), I am ceaselessly amazed at how fucking stupid everyone is. And the stupidest among them end up working for us. We don’t serve lunch on weekends because our weekend cook is incapable of doing the (very simple) recipes. Not that he’s much better with breakfast- he is having trouble mastering the operation of a toaster. That’s not a joke- he sent out 30 breakfast sandwiches, our most popular item, with untoasted bagels before we caught it. The cook who trained him is no brain trust, but he’s solid, consistent, and reliable. He’s been trying to convince the weekend guy to apply for a job at Taco Bell (“That’s probably more within his capability.”). Our weekend barista literally cannot count to ten nor count money, nor make change, even when the POS tells him the amount. And let’s not get into the questions of writing or spelling… But this is all college material. And they all vote.

Birthdays today include a guy of foggy origins; a woman that Oliver Wendell Holmes approved of; the guy who started the masking craze; a guy who would have hated my students; a guy who always made you wonder wtf he was doing there; a guy who blew a mean horn; a guy who exemplified the ethics of the legal profession; a wolf I got to see close up and personal in a surprise appearance at a coffeehouse; the second best thing in homicide; the queen of crappy burgers; and proof that affirmative action doesn’t result in mediocr… oh, wait.

Me, I vote for Links.

But don’t ever say that “trans” is a mental illness. No, of course not.

Not surprisingly, these guys are just not very good at this.

When animals die, they often thrash around just before the finale.

That First Amendment shit is just sooooo old fashioned.

We do love our stupid symbolic shit.

CONSPIRACY!!!

There’s so many jokes here. So many.

But as long as it’s Other People’s Money, they’ll sure try. But then, so will the other Team.

Let’s be honest- he’s an overhyped midwit.

I take a perverse pleasure in the spectacle of people who are very good at what they do suddenly encounter next-level. There’s a very competent and entertaining jazz band playing, then Dexter Gordon walks on and you can instantly see/hear how much better he is. I mean, it’s almost done casually. I’ve watched AAA baseball games where an MLBer on rehab walks on and you suddenly see the field change. This is kinda the same and all credit to the other guys in the band who clearly recognize this. DG is incredible, and the Old Guy feels lucky to have seen him live at least a dozen times.

I don’t like the snitching but someone who celebrates murder and sees it as an instrument by which goals can be achieved can’t be trusted and I don’t want to work with them in any capacity. They’re the type that’d stab you in the back, maybe literally, the first chance they got.

Unfortunately that describes about half the electorate these days.

““Our goal is not to see a certain numeric reduction in ads,” a senior administration official told reporters during a background call this week. “Our goal is to ensure that patients have proper information about drugs that have potential harms, and it’s to rebuild public trust.””

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

It is the economy, along with a rejection of a lot of leftist* shibboleths. They don’t like seeing the daughter who was the first in the family to go to college come home with no tits.

        Hahaha! That’s so precious 🥰 💞

I don’t like those things. I’m surprised UCS is enamored with them enough to query and complain it wasn’t working. 🤨

    • Grumbletarian

That the writer assumes it’s the working class who switched sides and not the Democratic party speaks volumes.

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

        Ding ding ding!

The working class hasn’t really changed except perhaps a bit the margins. It’s the media and academic classes that have leaped leftward, and seen that as proof that everyone else leapt rightward.

Example 1: 15 years ago, no one thought that men could become women simply by proclaiming themselves as such. Now if you don’t think that you’re a Christian fundamentalist Nazi bigot hell-bent on killing anyone who isn’t white and straight.

Meanwhile the working class is like, “Wait, what? I just want affordable health care and to make sure my employer isn’t ass raping me.”

  7. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

By the way, what is up with leftists and big hair?

Look at Gladwell’s picture in the article.

Gladwell and his ilk are why we are in the mess we are in.

  8. Strange Brew

“More than 110,000 people join Tommy Robinson-organised protest…”. The reports I saw yesterday were saying over a million. There’s software that can accurately determine the number from the aerial photos. From what I saw it was definitely a lot more than 110,000. But then again, expecting accuracy from The Guardian is a bit naive. To be fair though, they are also incapable of making correct change because they’re retarded.

    • Suthenboy

I see the accusation of racism and hate speech but no examples. I wonder what that means.

      • juris imprudent

Why don’t you hear the dog whistle?

Also, correctly ascribing motivation of the participants is not in the Guardians wheelhouse.

“The Metropolitan police said at least 25 people were arrested and 26 officers were injured, including four who were seriously hurt. Marchers were arrested for a range of offences, including affray, violent disorder, assaults and criminal damage.”

      WTF is affray?

      • Ted S.

Have you tried looking that up?

That is about what I thought. The first pictures of the London marchers I see a lot of black faces, some of them holding up photos of Charlie Kirk.
Also, looking at the crowd…110K my ass. Multiply that somewhere close to ten times.

    • rhywun

      110K my ass

I loved the range of estimates. I doubt the “3 million” I read yesterday but The Guardian’s estimate is ridiculous.

About 5,000 counter-protesters from trade unions and anti-fascist groups marched in a separate route in central London

      LOL!

Some years back, the marketing director of my credit union employer recognized the name of a newly-hired teller and said, “She goes to my church, and we had to ask her to stop taking up the collection because she couldn’t count the money correctly.” 🤦‍♀️

  22. DrOtto

The word mediocrity suggests mid-level performance (not great, but not bad). Affirmative Action Jackson would have to put in some work to even achieve mediocrity.

    • (((Jarflax

This is the real truth of affirmative action. People tend to think of it as a single thumb on the scale at the point where someone is hired, gently nudging the balance to less, but still somewhat, qualified person. A bit unfair to the more qualified person perhaps, and probably a mild decrease in quality in the job, but no big deal. It’s not. It is a cumulative effect of that thumb being used to nudge dozens of scales along the entire life of the ‘beneficiaries.’ Every teacher that inflated their grading, at every level, every testing institution that racially normed scoring, or just simplified the test to inflate results, every admissions committee that insisted on a specific make up for the entering class, all nudged scales. You end up with people who cannot use a toaster, count to ten, or make change, not just in a coffee shop, but on the bench presiding over trials, in Congress, in an operating theater. How can you not? At every stage where someone had the responsibility to say, “I am sorry but you’re not up to the standard and need to go back and repeat this class, or give up on this career” they shirked it and just rubber stamped a passing grade. And it doesn’t just affect the minorities it was instituted to aid. The grade inflation and dumbing down of tests and standards means ALL the students coming through the schools are unvetted and unchallenged.

      • Chafed

Every Harvard undergrad with a 3.8 GPA knowingly waves.

Will we ever have civil discourse in this time of rising political violence? Concerned liberal journalists want to know.

  24. The Late P Brooks

    Civil discourse

Charles James Kirk, 31, died on Wednesday from a gunshot to the neck at a Utah Valley University campus event just as he was trying to deflect a question about mass shootings by suggesting they were largely a function of gang violence. He died with a net worth of $12 million, which he made by espousing horrific and bigoted views in the name of advancing Christian nationalism. The foundation of his empire was the group he cofounded and led, Turning Point USA, which is a key youth-recruitment arm of the MAGA movement. Kirk was able to launch Turning Point at the age of 18 because he received money from Tea Party member Bill Montgomery, right-wing donor Foster Feiss, and his own father, also a prolific right-wing donor. He was an unrepentant racist, transphobe, homophobe, and misogynist who often wrapped his bigotry in Bible verses because there was no other way to pretend that it was morally correct. He had children, as do many vile people.

It is rude of me to say all of this, because we live in a culture where manners are often valued more than truth. That is why a slew of pundits and politicians have raced to portray Kirk’s activities, which harmed many vulnerable people, in a positive light—and to give him the benefit of the doubt that he did not grant to anyone who wasn’t white, Christian, straight, and male. California Governor Gavin Newsom framed Kirk’s project as a healthy democratic exercise: “The best way to honor Charlie’s memory is to continue his work: engage with each other, across ideology, through spirited discourse. In a democracy, ideas are tested through words and good-faith debate.” This downwardly defines both “discourse” and “good-faith.”

Let it all out. Speak truth to power, The Nation girl. This is America, not some tinpot shithole like England.

  28. The Late P Brooks

When asked about mass shootings he said, “I think it’s worth it. I think it’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year, so that we can have the Second Amendment.” Perhaps Kirk did not believe that his own life would be cut short by gun violence, but, like the rest of us, he has witnessed countless school shootings. When he said “some gun deaths” are acceptable, he surely knew he lived in a country where the deaths he deemed acceptable included those of children, some of whom were the age of his own. There is no inherent virtue in caring about your own children; that is the bare minimum requirement for effective parenting. Virtue lies in caring about the safety and well-being of children you don’t know.

Now do cars. If you drive a car you are an unfeeling monster willing to profit from the deaths of others merely to keep from having to walk.

    • rhywun

    • Muzzled Woodchipper

That idea that political assassination is the same thing as “gun violence” is fucking retarded.

  29. The Late P Brooks

Some of the people valorizing Kirk insist that all of his toxicity was acceptable because at least he was open to debate—a bar so low, you’d have to dig into the Mariana Trench to get to it. And he certainly paid lip service to it. “We record all of it so that we put [it] on the Internet so people can see these ideas collide,” he said of his own streaming operation. “When people stop talking, that’s when you get violence. That’s when civil war happens, because you start to think the other side is so evil, and they lose their humanity.”

But Kirk’s actions undercut that notion every day. His entire business was saying the other side was evil and dehumanizing them. The debates were simply performances, and he could not have an entertaining public fight without opposition. Turning Point did not work to bring people together; it worked to bring about a country where anyone who wasn’t a white Christian nationalist wasn’t welcome. I won’t celebrate his death, but I’m not obligated to celebrate his life, either.

    Dissent is genocide.

      Nothing critical (yet) thank goodness.

      • UnCivilServant

I did that yesterday. A whole half working day of dealing with a Sev 1 outage.

        Not fun.

I have to get dressed and walk up to the bar to watch the game, drink beer, and eat wings. It’s a rough life.

The flatiron was so tender and well-done.

“A 2025 Forever postage stamp to honor the beloved actor Betty White was announced Friday by the United States Postal Service.

The actress, best known for her roles in “The Golden Girls” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died in December 2021, less than three weeks before her 100th birthday, according to The Associated Press. No date has been announced for the stamp’s release. ”

Amazing how fucked up the MTA is. Mondami wants “free” busses. Which guarantees every bus will have at least one criminally insane homeless asshole.

      • slumbrew

They’re already effectively free, unless they suddenly cracked down on fare evaders.

      • Ted S.

        That’s the point.

        effectively free

The subways – even more highly subsidized – too, and I haven’t seen Mam-commie advocate for free that yet but you know it’s coming.

    • creech

From $2.50 to $2.90. That’s 26 percent on my calculator. In any case, who knows what the SEPTA subsidy is because no journalist probes the numbers. I’ve seen “annual number of rider trips” reported as anywhere from 250 million to 470 million. My guess is $1 fare increase would cover the operating deficit.

      • creech

        Dammit- 16percent.

    Living in a dream world

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, another potential Democratic presidential prospect who recently announced his 2026 reelection campaign, said he would not change his public schedule because of the increased threat even as political violence will be on his mind.

“It’s never something that completely leaves you, but I don’t think it can be something that debilitates you,” Moore told The Associated Press.

When asked if he expects a retaliatory attack against Democrats, the former Army captain insisted, “We are not at war with one another.”

“As someone who has seen war, as someone who knows what war looks like, as someone who will live with the realities of war for the rest of my life, I refuse to ever believe that we in the country are at war with one another,” he said. “And I refuse to believe that that we as a country are devolving into some just kind of type of retaliatory tit for tat.”

““Political violence is unacceptable and gun violence is an epidemic from coast to coast that needs urgent action. Reforms to reduce gun violence are supported by a majority of Americans. No one should have to fear for their lives because of who they are,” a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement to The Advocate. “It is also a demonstrable fact that Charlie Kirk spread infinite amounts of disinformation about LGBTQ people. Lies and vitriol about transgender people were a frequent part of his rhetoric and events. We need leaders and all those with platforms to prioritize safety over disinformation, irresponsible politics, and profit.”

GLAAD further said that the nonprofit “stressed the extent to which Kirk and Turning Point USA promoted anti-LGBTQ+ narratives.” GLAAD also highlighted Turning Point USA’s college campus campaigns featuring speakers such as Riley Gaines, Chloe Cole, and Pastor Junsun Yoo, saying the group regularly spoke against transgender people.”

    they found the real killer

As authorities at the federal and state levels parse the details of the fatal shooting of far-right activist Charlie Kirk at a university in Utah, a recently passed state bill that allows people with concealed-carry permits to carry firearms on college campuses has drawn fresh scrutiny.

Utah has allowed for permitless open and concealed carry of weapons since 2021. But before the passage of HB 128, firearms had to be concealed when carried on college campuses. The law allowed people with the proper permit to carry them openly.

When the law passed in August, university staff voiced concerns about what carrying could mean for classroom emergencies that might require students to act as armed responders and their presence in laboratories where harmful and potent chemicals were stored.

While it’s unclear whether the suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was legally allowed to own the hunting rifle used in the shooting, or have one on a university campus, the proximity between the bill’s passing and the shooting has pushed the law into headlines across the US.

If only there had been an applicable law, this tragedy would have been averted.

And they’re still not convinced after she tries explaining it (she’s super smart and data-driven, but not as convincing as professional pitchmen). So yeah, sigh of relief.
