GLORIOUSLY WEIRD FISH HAS TEETH ON FOREHEAD — FOR SEX: The ratfish’s extra teeth line a cartilaginous appendage called a tenaculum that in males can be erected and deployed to grasp a female during mating. Many fish have clasping appendages near the pelvis that they use to hold their mate close during the deed. The spotted ratfish has the tenaculum in addition to pelvic claspers.
GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN ROUNDUP: During a government shutdown [r]estaurants and barber shops [in the US Capitol and Congressional offices] are likely to close. Garbage won’t be collected. Fox is told that it’s unlikely that congressional parking restrictions are enforced. Quelle horreur! But, wait, there’s moar! In a memo from the Office of Management and Budget, obtained by NBC News, the Trump administration indicated it’s prepared to go beyond the traditional furloughing of some government employees during shutdowns and fire federal employees. Contrast who will be feeling the pain during the potential 2025 shutdown with who was made to feel pain by the Obama administration during the 2013 government shutdown.
SHE TOOK A CHANCE: It didn’t turn out as planned. Your feel-good story of the day, folks. You will remember that these ppl previously fired a flare gun at their own boat, then claimed it was an [Israeli] drone attack. Obligatory music link.

SEE, SHE WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG: Mother of Dallas ICE shooter Joshua Jahn is hardline liberal who raged against gun rights. I’m sure that someone on the left will claim that if only the politicians had listened to Sharon Jahn and those like her that the ICE detainee (presumably not an intended target) would still be alive, because nobody planning to go on a shooting spree would ever acquire a weapon illegally. The murder weapon appears to have been a WW2 era US Army surplus M1 rifle, so they can claim that it was the sort of dangerous military weapon that should not be in the hands of “civilians.” For some reason all the press coverage goes out of its way to state the weapon was “NOT an AR-15.” CORRECTION: I originally indicated that the shooter killed an ICE agent instead of an ICE detainee.
THE ROARING TWENTIES, REDUX: US economy grows at fastest pace in nearly two years as spending roars back: ‘Steady as a rock.’
JOHN BOLTON WAS INDEED HIDING CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS AT HOME: Details here.
LIFE ON MARS? I know this was covered earlier, but here’s an update with some interesting info about bureaucratic hurdles (COSPAR), and, of course, a pitch for reviving the Mars Sample Return program. I’m just spitballing here, but maybe have the SpaceX robots (hopefully landing on Mars next year) retrieve the sample tubes and then transport them back to earth on a future mission. Alternately, send analysis equipment to Mars and do the work there; whatever equipment they send will doubtlessly benefit the future Mars colony.
ICE-HUNTING LUNAR VIPER MISSION ON-TRACK FOR 2027: Details here.

But why should a shut down of the federal government affect trash collection and barber shops? I was told as recently as last week that D.C. is a strong independent black
womancity that don’t need no man, and Donald Trump using federal resources to police crime was a fascist takeover.FED city and all that…oh wait…I mean, cause Trump!
I’ve said it before — none of DC should be housing barring the White House and the Veep Pool Cabana. Let the residents live in actual states so the stupid representation thing goes away, there’s no question of services when the Fed shuts down and the town can be focused on just the actual work.
Capitol (building) not capital (city).
Good point. Although I suppose I also kind of assumed that the barbers and trash men working the capitol building weren’t federal employees.
Can we do a “what’s the difference between a congressman and trash? Trash gets picked up” joke?
It would be capital, to raise capital to install a decorated capitol on the pillars of the capitol in the capital city, but only by means short of murder or treason, lest we receive capital punishment.
Non-essential contractors get a non-paid vacation.
Look, a shutdown is disruptive only in the newscycle. Though this one might be different, as it might expose a swath of die hard ‘Im not political, but Trump!’ folk.
Happy Thursday Tonio
Happy Thursday, buddy.
I thought that only migrants got hit.
Oops. Fixed. Thanks.
Oh, okay. I was wondering if I’d missed an update somewhere.
And obligatory.
I’ll have to wait until Jimmy Kimmel weighs in on this one. Sounds like a definite MAGA turrurist.
She should read up on Cindy Sheehan…might be informative
Can we now dispense with the pretense that children always and everywhere inherit the politics of their parents?
Only in cases where that fits the narrative!
Sorry, government employees aren’t available to block veterans from visiting open air memorials. Please block yourselves.
“Remain orderly and pick up after yourselves”
Should be easy for all the absentee ballot users — they’ll have writers block.
Obama my savior! Oh wait, one of the longest shutdowns, no backpay for forced sequestration days while being expected to work, smallest GS scale cost of living pay increases….but hey, I can get a mamogram now!
I recall the poor government employee who was stuck supervising the essential contractors while the others got a back-paid vacation.
ICE is on the Moon now?
Just on the dark side
You know who else is going “straight to the moon” one of these days?
Alice?
Jose Jimenez?
Tonio’s going straight?
Gay man going straight, goes straight to the moon? One step at a time I guess?
STEVE SMITH OFTEN GO STRAIGHT TO THE MOON WHEN HE ‘HELP’ HIKERS WITH PANTS.
THEN HE DOES A SLINGSHOT TO URANUS.
AND BY URANUS MEAN….
SDF-7:
Alice? Who the fuck is Alice?
Alice Kramden from the Honeymooners.
Ralph always threatened to punch her and send her straight to the moon.
This was considered family entertainment when I was growing up.
I know a guy who plays on the Jimmy Sturr orchestra.
kinnath — I think Neph knows… he’s just doing the more profane version of the refrain response from the song I linked. I’m sure it is common in Cleveland.
Sean — Better than a guy who plays on Liberace’s organ.
SDF-7:
You would be correct.
Won’t be the first time I didn’t even flinch as the joke went flying over my head.
Ed Norton?
Lmao, I was just reading an article yesterday, think it was Campaign for Liberty, stating how tariffs and inflation are about to crater the economy.
Even environmentist cheer tariffs…
And now she couldn’t escape if she wanted to.
Yeah, sorry — I’m cynical and jaded after all the numbers have been “walked back” for so long. We’ll see if this reporting holds after a few months… OMB’s picked people have as much reason to pump him up as PPP’s did, after all.
Agree, particularly since we’ve had to pare spending back tremendously trying to recover from debt that was largely anccumulated because of mass inflation from 22-24.
I sent an email about Judge of Jinwick because I was unsure who to pester regarding it.
I’m also not sure at what point I become annoying for the sumbissions notifications (please confirm if submit for publication creates emails) and other attempts to get noticed.
Things are a bit hectic here with the death of Swiss Dad (RIP).
I understand.
Tonio, I sent an article about a month ago. I may have missed the publication ’cause I don’t always see everything that goes up.
Re: Haircut
I don’t believe anyone gets e-mails when something goes to Pending, but when I’m looking to put things on the schedule, I go to that section in the Posts. Since we have quite a few things on a regular schedule, those are easy to pick up and schedule. It’s the stand alone pieces that usually get snapped up and scheduled in the non-claimed spots.
I just worry that every time I hit that button, someone is getting pestered, especially because I make a load of typos.
I see pending clogged with stuff – but it is all 3 sources. I will figure scheduling when I get off Bereavement Leave, ok? I’m a bit @#$%ing busy AND sad right now.
But the pawn shops will still be open, right?
They’ll unlock them en passant.
As will the “working girls” on 14th St.
When are they getting a warrant for the Walrus-stache? You could hide at least two Libraries of Congress in that monstrosity.
Casualty and after action reports, but those were just for batin’, not espionage
God I’d love to see that miserable piece of shit die in prison. Preferably with the handle of a toilet plunger lodged in his ass.
He can smuggle that in his mustache
why do you hate the toilet plunger?
He’ll do easy time in a “Club Fed” minimum security facility. No “lifers” there so less likely that another inmate will be willing to do a hit.
There was something in the air that night…

Ooh-ooh, she can sail, hear her lies

And they will piss and moan again when their invasion fleet is turned away again.
It’s all cosplay. Every single one of the people in that flotilla are basically just try to become famous for doing absolutely nothing.
In a year they’ll be at the next international outrage.
This seems like the simplest option — easier to send data back, after all… and I doubt we’d miss any of the equipment in the long run where a hypothetical colony could find it invaluable.
And absolutely <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNWRkhcR2mQ"obligatory. And unrelated bonus just because you made me think of the band and I love the “subtle” double entendres in the refrain.
I’m not sure it would still be in working order after sitting around waiting to be collected.
“I’m not sure it would still be in working order after sitting around waiting to be collected.”
That doesn’t make sense. The Perseverance rover collects samples and seals them up in numbered metal tubes, and occasionally shits them out onto the surface of Mars for future collection. There are literally several small piles of sample tubes just sitting there on the Martian surface. There is no “it” required to be in working order. And even in a worst-case scenario where a critical sample got stuck inside the rover, the SpaceX Optimus humanoid robot would be in a much better position to retrieve samples through disassembly of the rover than would a purpose-built sample retrieval robot which would also be expected to load said samples into the purpose-built sample return rocket (which might, in-turn, have to rendezvous with another rocket for the voyage from Mars orbit to earth).
From the snippets I was thinking the proposal was “send the scientific instuments to do the analysis up there and leave them so the colonists can later reuse the science instruments”
Dang bloody nabbit.
And UCS — maybe, maybe not… I can imagine they could design it to seal itself back up as much as possible and shut down to preserve functionality. Spectrum analyzers aren’t really rocket science after all.
From the snippets I was thinking the proposal was “send the scientific instuments to do the analysis up there and leave them so the colonists can later reuse the science instruments”
Yes. But the unstated part was that the instruments would go up with a crewed mission and live in a clean room type environment or controlled storage until the colony needs them again. Bottom line is that purpose-built MSR hardware is increasingly difficult to justify when we are approaching colonization.
The science community wants “their” solution and is generally suspicious (if not downright hostile to) human space exploration.
You will remember that these ppl previously fired a flare gun at their own boat, then claimed it was an [Israeli] drone attack.
I do not remember that. Is that really what happened?
On the video I saw, I didn’t see anyone shoot a flare, and whatever came down and hit the boat looked too fast to be a flare.
The lithium battery for Greta’s vibrator ruptured from abuse?
Eww. How dare you!
[golf clap] and a hearty “EWWWW.”
The reporting was that it was either that or someone dropped a cigarette in a life jacket locker and it flared up on deck, as I recall.

I didn’t think Blue Origin was reliably above sub-orbital yet (maybe I’m forgetful… it certainly happens). I would not be banking on them for lunar insertions just yet…
The BO (tee-hee) New Shepard is their suborbital rocket they use for space tourism. The New Glenn, which has launched once, is their two-stage orbital rocket which has has flown once, on a successful test flight. They have several other launches/payloads scheduled. I wish them well.
I have the same kind of gun that Kirk’s killer used. I also have a surplus WW2 M1. Maybe I should check to make sure nobody has emptied my gun cabinets.
You mean had, before the boating accident, right?
Right. Maybe I need to go dredge the lake.
Word is, SpaceX is aiming for Oct 6 for next IFT launch.
Not from an M1 Garand, either. The M1 Garand uses an 8-round enblok, shown here: https://pictures.gunauction.com/7050225948/17226812/20210723215158-4260.jpg
Completely unconfirmed and single-source, but I have a friend with some LE connections in Dallas who claimed to have gotten a peek at the actual rifle, and he described it as, ‘either a Yugo M48 Mauser or a Czech vz24 bolt-action rifle; I didn’t get a close enough look to see if the bolt handle was straight or bent.’ Either of those rifles would take the 5-round stripper clip that has been making the rounds.
I always wanted a M48 or a vz24, but didn’t want to add another caliber to the mix.
Thanks. I should have reached out to you or NA before linking to that article.
I know some folks on a discord that saw the pictures of the dead shooter with rifle. M48 came up as a possibility. Kar98k also.
Got a question for the firearms aficionados here; the rounds in that clip look like .30-06, but that’s a 5-cartridge clip. The clip for an M1 holds eight rounds. Anybody have word on what the shooter was using? Maybe a Springfield 03A3?
Another Mauser maybe? Did antifa buy in bulk?
They all found Grandpa’s guns
There are loads available on GunBroker on any given day of the week.
Prices range from $300 to $3500.

Dammit, late as usual.
It’s possible he used an M1 Garand to shoot and left the pictured bullets behind to be found. If he doesn’t have Garand thumb, then it probably wasn’t an M1 Garand.
Possible, but for now I’m going with the ‘hear hoofbeats expect horses’ explanation.
Boy will those coconut bearing migrating swallows surprise you, EvilSheldon.
HEAR HOOFBEATS EXPECT GREEK COUSIN SATYR SMITH! AND BY GREEK MEAN WHAT YOU THINK!
You can get .30-06 in stripper clips for 1903 Springfields. I used to have some. Greek manufacture I think it was.
The ammunition pictured is not .30-06.
You load the 1903 springfield with stripper clips like that.
Those are 8×57. Note the tapered cartridges. The 30-06 has far less taper. The krauts had the brass stripper clips. I think ours were oxide coated steel
That is a strait stripper clip for the mauser. the Garand takes blocks with 8 cartridges staggered.
These shootings and the stories around them are stinking worse and worse every time.
Savvy
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is endorsing Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayor’s race. The move comes as other top Democrats have shied away from Mamdani, despite his landslide win in the Democratic primary in June.
“Look as far as I’m concerned he’s the Democratic nominee and he should be supported,” Harris said during an appearance Monday on MSNBC, but she also appeared to downplay his national significance. “He’s not the only star,” Harris said.
——-
Some Democratic leaders have also distanced themselves from Mamdani because of his progressive stance on economic policies, including a call for a rent freeze, free childcare, and higher taxes for the wealthy and corporations.
“Socialism does not work and his proposed plans would make New York a less competitive city and state,’ said Rep. Tom Suozzi, a moderate Democratic congressman from Long Island who announced he won’t back Mamdani.
New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul endorsed Mamdani in an editorial in the New York Times earlier this month, describing him as “a leader who is focused on making New York City affordable — a goal I enthusiastically support.”
Listen, if Charles Manson shows up on the ballot as a Democrat it’s your solemn duty to vote for him. Otherwise democracy is dead.
This sentiment right here makes me want to kick a nun in the cunt.
But Trump’s supporters are totally in a cult because they agree with him on everything, except when they don’t.
There are definitely some who are cultish. Not nearly as high a percentage as on the left, but I have been yelled at as a lefty for saying tariffs are stupid and for siding with Musk in the tiff about cutting spending.
Enh, he’s just openly supporting all the same policies most Dems have always supported but were too afraid to run on.
Free childcare? At govt rates the daycares will all shut down…then what? Press them into service? Cuz that is what ‘free’ services means…government pressing people into service at rates they would not ordinarily accept.
Last of tomato harvest so its tomato soup tonight with a pesto and prosciutto grilled cheese.

Needs more warts.
The murder weapon appears to have been a WW2 era US Army surplus M1 rifle
I don’t buy that. The pictured ammunition looks more like 8mm Mauser. That is also not a Garand en-bloc clip. It’s a Mauser style stripper clip.
Bet you’re right. The shoulder on the .30-06 cartridge is sharper than the stuff in the clip photo.
Thanks. I’m ashamed that my firearms expertise is lacking.
So question about ammo….
I’ve woefully neglected to collect ammo for quite some time now. I have 4 calibers and a shotgun round that I would most likely need to buttress, but because of the exorbitant cost of ammo these days, I’m not sure how I ought to prioritize acquisition.
.223/5.56 – for the AR
45ACP – for the pistol(s)
6.5 Grendel (for the AR Pistol and an overall much better round)
.308 (long gun)
12ga
I think the pistol and AR rounds would be most useful, but even narrowing to just 2, which to prioritize? And what’s the best way to go about it when you’re starting from veritable scratch (I have enough ammo for a short range trip)?
They’re all in current production, so concentrate on what you shoot.
I’ve used Ammo Seek to find deals.
Right.
But I’m thinking more in terms of usefulness n a real-deal SHTF scenario, which seems ever more possible by the day.
In the event of a real-deal SHTF scenario, your level of training and skill is going to be way more important than the amount of ammo you have on hand. You should be buying ammo in bulk, and shooting it in practice on a regular basis.
You still want to have some ammo on hand.
I like to have 500 or so rounds of 9×19 and 5.56mm (each) fighting ammo on hand. Those are my two go-to defensive rounds. I keep most of it loaded into magazines, but keep some loose for zeroing a new gun.
For practice ammo, if I have less than 2000 rounds on hand I get itchy. I also get itchy if I don’t practice at least once a week.
Right now, bulk ammo prices are down.
Buy! Buy! Buy!
sgammo.com
I, too, have the ammo problem. It depends on what scenario you think is most likely: long-term survival hunting vs a brief period of very active self-defense, and of course all the in-betweens.
Maybe this is a good article topic (hint) or one we could drop as an open thread.
For long term survival, learn to use a bow or crossbow. Keep everything else as simple as possible, and quiet as possible.
I did all my panic buying in 2020. I am well stocked at this point. But, I do feel the urge to buy more.
Bulk ammo buyers: any concerns about online purchases being tracked?
I mean, your credit card company knows you spent money at a company that sells ammo, and the mail carrier or UPS guy knows they hate your guts because they just carried a bunch of 40-70 lb. packages to your door, but there are literally millions of people buying ammo online.
It’s far, far too late for me on that note.
Nope.
I’m concerned about everything that the government and their crony banking corps do to track our gun purchases, but not much we can do about it short of getting laws changed. It’s technically possible to buy all your guns in cash in private transfers and pay cash for ammo at physical stores (ripoff!) but if you’ve ever filled out a 4473 in your life, the government already knows you’re a gun owner. At least ammo is expendable, so it’s not very useful info to have since it could have all been shot up.
Of course, I haven’t had to worry about any gun-related matters since the boating accident. Damn faulty hull construction on these cheap Chinese sailboats.
Sounds like there is a need for reloading equipment.
I haven’t shot anything besides reloads (except 22LR) for 40 years. Now I rarely shoot much anymore but I have some exotic calibers.
ie, 30 Herrett , handgun with which I killed a deer. A 6.5mm X 223 handgun, .45 Winc Mag handgun. I sent a .22LR, a .223. and a 41 Rem handgun (deer slayer) to Alaska with my reloading equipment.
A 30 Remington, 270 Weatherby Mag, an SKS, all of which I reloaded. Since my legit accident I don’t spent a lot of time in the woods.
I’m glad you clarified between legitimate and illegitimate accidents, because most illegitimate accidents aren’t discovered till 9 months later.
I am with ES: they know who I am.
If that is something that worries you, hit every Cabela’s in a 200K radius and pay cash.
Thanks all. There’s a gun store here that sells in semi-bulk for good prices. I compared their over-the-counter prices with bulk stuff online. With the shipping charges it’s pretty much a wash.
This 45 Win Mag you speak of….what gun is it?
I had a cylinder chambered in that caliber for a Blackhawk. I have ammo and dies for it…functionally it is redundant as the 44mag exists but I might be interested in acquiring another…should anyone be interested in selling. Just sayin’.
Fourscore:
I actually do have reloading gear for my more esoteric calibers. I have several 20 calibers of different sorts. When I first got into 6.5 Grendel you had to reload it too. It seems to have gathered some steam into semi-wide adoption enough for several brands to make ammo. But I’m not about to take my manual load8ng gear to make hundreds and hundreds of rounds.
I believe the lowly 22lr is a woefully overlooked round for a SHTF scenario, at least for food collection. Also, a good pump for the flying food.
.22LR has a lot to offer in terms of rifle practice, low signature, price, and availability.
“Mamma Mia! Greta’s Gaza Flotilla Flooded with ABBA Music on Repeat as Radios Hijacked
Greta Thunberg waves as she greets people while sailing on tMario Wurzburger/Getty Simon K
*Swedish professional protester* Greta Thunberg and supporters now traveling in a 51-vessel convoy to Hamas-terrorist infested Gaza have a problem. Opponents have hijacked their radios and communications systems to play ABBA on repeat and block out any other comms within the anti-Israel fleet.”
Damn, that’s a funny first-graf. [G]oddamn these people are so fucking tedious. And for what?! (Well. $$, duh, but regardless.) Rather than the tip of the iceberg, I think global awareness of the graft and bullshit is only now the toe of the mountain under the drapes. I have hope the skirt will continue to blow upward. (Not Greta’s. Yuck.)
A stripper clip for a K98 mauser with surplus 8×57 and now we are told a Garand rifle?
Shitty reporting? Lying FBI? Both? What the fuck is going on here?
Knowing our media, I’m surprised they didn’t call it a fully-semi-automatic AR-47 with heat-seeking bullets in one of those 600-round assault clips.
Oh, and btw the *11 system has gone down statewide. There have been a number of sabotages lately here.
Commies have regrouped and are on the attack.
Fiduciary duty
A group of Disney investors is demanding access to company records, alleging that the entertainment giant’s handling of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension reflected political pressures rather than the best interests of shareholders.
In a letter sent Wednesday to CEO Bob Iger, lawyers representing the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, a federation of labor unions, and Reporters Without Borders said they are seeking board materials, communications and policies related to the suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Strictly focused on the dollars and cents.
Uh, would someone like to look into the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, and if *they* are reflecting political pressures, or the best interests of their public union and army of reliable D-voters? (Oh. Those goals are the same. Damn.)
My understanding is that all of the late nite propagandists were losing money, including Kimmel. If they cancelled his show they were acting in the shareholder’s interests.
Also, I am pissed off about the info coming out about all of the shootings since the Vegas shooting. I dont think they have given us one bit of accuratre info on any of them, not one whit. The narratives are designed to confuse.
Cheaper to let Kimmel run out his contract and not renew than risk the inevitable lawsuits. That’s what’s in the shareholders interest.
For record, sore as hell, but bright eyes and mentally well. Getting driven to work tomorrow, but at work, I shall be.
Dad *just* got back after 2nd knee replacement. (Different knee.) This should be interesting. My second (hip) replacement was 11yrs ago. He won’t take this well. His 76th bday was on Tuesday.
The investors seek board minutes, internal communications, affiliate agreements and analyses of the financial impact of the suspension.
They suspended him out of the blue, and the stock went down. There was no conceivable potential impact related to the content itself.
These people are irremediably dishonest.
Knowing our media, I’m surprised they didn’t call it a fully-semi-automatic AR-47 with heat-seeking bullets in one of those 600-round assault clips.
The armor piercing kind that explodes in your liver.
I’m just proud, and I’m sure some of the gun control crowd can agree with me here, that the kids are learning to shoot guns without the thing that goes up. Baby steps.

Nice little peppers.
I am now at 11+ hours on a bridge for an issue that started two fucking days ago. There has been no progress, no ideas, but we’ve burned through a lot of trust and good will from our customers (it doesn’t help when you flip flop at least three times on the browser version being the root cause).
If I was ready to start burning some bridges, I’d be pointing out to my supervisor that a couple of months back, I pointed out that are shitty documentation, release management, notifications, and tier 3 support infighting were going to cause a multi day outage that may hit the news and destroy our reputation. So far, two out of three on the predictions (no media stories that I’ve seen yet).
Sorry. Best wishes.
Have you tried rebooting?
Have you checked the thermostat?
That blows. One of my most loathed tasks in life in general – but especially at work – is trying to craft a delicate enough way of saying “I told you so” that doesn’t put them on the defensive and might actually prompt them to make positive changes.
And with bosses, than can be a dangerously fine line.
“Holding my tongue” is one of the most valuable skills I’ve developed over the years.
Don’t jump!
