Civility obsessives love a silver-tongued devil, wearing a nice suit, sporting a tidy haircut, while whispering sweet bigotries. The conservatives among them push for marginalized people to lose their rights and freedoms and, sometimes, even risk their lives. They will tolerate a protest but only if you congregate in an orderly fashion, for culturally sanctioned causes, and if you don’t raise your voice or express anger or overstay your welcome.

People seem to appreciate the depth of study and the genuine community without the 19th and 20th century cultural baggage some of the more conservative churches in our denomination carry. I know my family does.
I went to my childhood Lutheran church last month as they were having a service in my recently deceased mother’s honor. Attendance was a tiny fraction of what I remember. Nearly everyone had white hair. And there was a progress pride flag hanging on the wall.
