The health inspector came to our YMCA summer camp kitchen once a summer. Never looked in the freezer. Only looked in the fridge for covers and dates on the food stored there. Made sure the dishwater was hot enough. Inspection took less than 20 minutes.
It wasn’t the health inspector that magically made the kitchen (or the food produced there) safe. It was my sorry ass mopping the floors, cleaning out the fridge and freezer, emptying the mice traps, shooing away the chipmunks, bears, and raccoons, scalding my hands in hot water, emptying the garbage. Because it was the right thing to do.

Let’s be clear: The fact that Trump’s first move is to single out Lisa Cook is no coincidence. It is intentional. Cook’s historic confirmation to the Fed was hard-won, over a bruising confirmation battle in which some of the ugliest racist and sexist attacks were leveled at her credentials.
She is an economist who has published pathbreaking work on innovation, violence and economic growth. Her very presence on the Fed represents both progress and a challenge to the old guard.
