House of the Long Shadows

The guy on the far left is John Carradine, who looks nothing like that in the film. That must have been sketched from a 1940s photo.

House of the Long Shadows

Tonight we have something classic with John Carradine, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee! This grouping did not happen any other time in a film, so that makes this a film to watch just for the novelty. This film also falls into a “Forgotten Film” category, as it almost never showed up on TV, and it did not get a DVD release until around 2011. I can only assume the reason for this was some kind of legal rights struggle which doomed it to obscurity. That kind of thing happens more than people would like to admit.

So what is this about? It’s an “Old Dark House” picture which falls into the comedy/horror class of films. A writer makes a bet with his publisher that he can write the next Wuthering Heights in 24 hours in a haunted mansion. That’s the plot. It is from 1983 and was designed more as a vehicle for Desi Arnaz, Jr. than for the four excellent co-stars mentioned above. Desi really cannot out-perform them so the film ended up not being a well-remembered classic, regardless of the cast. It is still an entertaining film despite Desi and it does not deserve obscurity. Be forewarned that there is 20 minutes of build-up with Desi as he has to make a bet with his publisher to launch the story. Ten minutes might have been sufficient.

Trivia! This was the last film by longtime independent director Pete Walker. He did do some horror films, notably Frightmare (1974) and The Flesh and Blood Show. He is still alive, should you wish to ring him up and ask why he could not afford proper lighting for this film. My assumption is when the film ran out of money three weeks in, the lighting technicians were let go first.

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary. Remember, if you hat ethe film, talk about your garden or football something. There are no rules on Thursdays! Next week, the month of Halloween movies continue with Sifu vs. Vampire! It’s a newer vampire film where we have the traditional style hopping (flying now) vampire loose in modern Hong Kong.

A little late to the start. Did I miss anything?

    • R.J.

Apologies. I was late as well. Been playing Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. It’s terribly addictive.

Ugh I hate the evil Link parts. It makes me want to throw my controller out the window.

The lava dungeon link and boss were both a pushover. Keep going!

I was smoking weed and listening to Judas Priest, as one does. Then a friend called and was too high to get off phone politely. These things happen.

        Keep going!

Enh I don’t have patience for dying over and over anymore.

Relaxing fun puzzle game turns into frantic die-fest now and then – pffft not fun.

      • R.J.

Hahaha! I thought about it tonight. Work is winding me up too much.

My relaxation this week is tomorrow. Bethannica is coming by, she is going with me and the family on a ghost hunt. Should be a good time.

      • Chafed

I want to hang with you, Common Tater.

A writer makes a bet with his publisher that he can write the next Wuthering Heights in 24 hours in a haunted mansion.

So another version of Seven Keys to Baldpate (Wikipedia confirms), except in the other versions the house isn’t haunted.

Apparently the 1929 version is on Tubi, but not the versions from the 1930s or 1940s. JustWatch claims two silent versions survive.

It’s the 1980s. Everyone was on drugs.

  9. Rat on a train

Damn. LA leads the series 3-0.

    • Common Tater

So we’re competing to TNF and baseball?

      • Nephilium

        Bengals/Stillers?

I have to watch, and at least for now, cheer for the Bengals.

    • rhywun

      *barf*

    • Evan from Evansville

Good thing about the Bengals game? ‘Local’ radio stn is 700am, so I listen to that for Reds games, plus I get the (actual) local ‘conservative’ take on Cincinnati. Stupid we don’t get 680 outta Chicago clearly ’round here. (I don’t hook up my phone to my car, heathens.)

It’s also close, so that’s a fun Thurs for you NFLers. I am highly displeased that LA is (almost) assuredly going back to the WS. Rooting most for Game 7, but I’m just fine with either Toronto or Seattle winning the ALCS.

      • rhywun

I have a soft spot for Toronto having visited there many times. Never been to the northwest quadrant of the country so obviously I have to root against Seattle.

      • rhywun

Plus I like that tubby guy who plays for Toronto (Kirk?) – short and fatter than me but hits homers. 🥴

      • Evan from Evansville

I strongly approve of your pro Toronto stance.

Fun with Kirk! Yesterday, he faced Kirby! So KIRk v KIRby! Of zero consequence, I’m sure that odd naming similarities has never occurred in MLB.

Kirby must have the best nicknames. I’d name him ‘Swallow!’ Such fun tossing that around in the locker room, steam clouding our eyes and soaking our pores…

      • rhywun

Sadly with the fast-approaching digital unfreedom I will probably never visit Canada again.

      • Chafed

The way things are going up north, it won’t be long before they would throw you off a roof if did.

I’ve got this queued up for later viewing. I was out and need to go to bed. Thanks RJ!

Amongst some other political pins. I have a Clinton Gore pin and a Hitler youth one.

I don’t like either flavor of socialist.

    • kinnath

It’s a set up. Someone added white and red tape or paper to a standard American flag. The reds do not match.

      • rhywun

lol The white tape is obvious now that you mention it.

The whole thing is so ridiculous, as in – who would come up with this let alone display it in public?

    • Ownbestenemy

What…you don’t have that just lying about?!

  11. R.J.

A twist ending with a twist ending. Nice! I hope you all enjoyed tonight’s post, see you next week. I have a heck of a Friday to prep for.

    • Rat on a train

It was all a dream … or a nightmare or something … anyway I see dead people, mostly … Little Ricky is still alive.

      • rhywun

I had to look up Desi Jr. on wikipedia and I was disgusted to learn that Little Ricky was played by someone else.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

As Sheldon Leonard told Carl Reiner when reworking Head of the Family into The Dick Van Dyke Show: “We’ll get a better actor to play YOU!”

  12. Aloysious

    This looks awesome.

It was an early morning, and I’m not off work yet, so if I fall asleep, will you wake me up?
    Stupid sleepiness.

    • rhywun

I slept straight through last night instead of the tossing and turning that often hits me a couple hours before the alarm goes off.

I’m not sure which is worse. When I sleep straight through I’m like, “Really? Already?” At least with the tossing and turning I feel like some time has passed.

      • Aloysious

Some nights are just a bitch.

      • Chafed

And then you marry one. I’ll see myself out.

“• Bolton says he is a victim of Trump’s weaponization of the DOJ: “When my e-mail was hacked in 2021, the FBI was made fully aware. In four years of the prior administration, after these reviews, no charges were ever filed,” Bolton said in a statement. “Then came Trump 2 who embodies what Joseph Stalin’s head of secret police once said, ‘You show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime.’”’

    That’s precious, precious.

    • rhywun

Bolton is not on my radar in any way. I have no idea what he may or may not have done.

There are just so many villains from the last decade or two that seem more obvious.

      • Evan from Evansville

Rogan had John Kiriakou on recently. Riveting and enraging. He specifies Brennen as being the POS most responsible for much of the CIAs shit and why Kiriakou was specifically targeted for being the only CIA official involved to be against the CIA’s “̵E̵n̵h̵a̵n̵c̵e̵d̵ ̵I̵n̵t̵e̵r̵r̵o̵g̵a̵t̵i̵o̵n̵” Torture Techniques.

He had an interesting bit praising the FBI, who actually fucking *knows* how to interrogate to get actionable information, whereas the CIA fucking never knew anything and killed *a bunch* of people in their ‘Cold Cell” and sleep deprivation torture sessions.

I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s damn, damn good. He talks personal shop about how Brennen was a fucking no one who was fired by his (female!) CIA boss and how he wormed his way in through being a lapdog for The Right Important People and eventually found himself ‘outranking’ said female former-boss, and how Brennen also took note to call her in and fire her in person, just as the petty, vindictive fuck he is.

      • rhywun

Oof. My eyes just glaze over when reading about FBI and CIA shenanigans. I don’t know why.

    • Ownbestenemy

We are just going to gloss over that 2.5/3 years of the Biden presidency was just ran by his staffers?

      • Chafed

No. But I also won’t ignore Trump is vindictive and happy to use DOJ for his personal purposes.

      • DrOtto

The DOJ has always been weaponized. Trump is just showing team stupid why they are called team stupid.

      • Ted S.

        So much this, MrOtto.

A couple of days ago on a classic movie forum, somebody made a comment: “The film made me long for the time when the FBI was focused on protecting our citizens and their civil rights.” regarding the Denzel Washington movie The Siege. I immediately thought of J. Edgar Hoover and asked what time that was, albeit without mentioning Hoover. Three or four people immediately jumped in to say basically, “But Trump!”

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Of course Bolton’s going to say that but in the grand scheme of things he’s a minor shitbag compared to so many others that truly deserve similar treatment. Is it weaponization as succor to a personal vendetta from Trump? To some degree probably so but it’s hard to give a damn and I hope the warmongering jerkoff gets fucked by the system that he so desperately wanted to see weaponized against others. Fuck that guy.

    • UnCivilServant

      Not it.

That dude was stupid. Work a second job off-hours, you just need to fill out some paperwork. Work a second job during work hours you catch felony charges.

  14. UnCivilServant

Morning, Glibs. I’d rather not go in to the office, but I’ve got little option. I do so prefer to have a roof overhead and food on the table.

    • Sean

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, U, Sean, Roat, and EfE!

      • Gender Traitor

Hey there, U! How are you today?

      • UnCivilServant

        Grumpy.

I realized I didn’t have dinner last night, slept with the lights on, and would rather not be in the office, but I am in the office already. Plus Monday is another office day.

      • Gender Traitor

No dinner?? 😱 Have you at least had a good breakfast this morning?

      • UnCivilServant

I’m in the middle of a breakfast salad with sliced chicken.

      • Gender Traitor

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

For the people nastalgic for that certain truckstop bathroom off I-95? I could see how it might be useful for a large family though but just how difficult is it to change a roll of TP?

      • Rat on a train

Nothing is too easy for the lazycapped.

      • Fourscore

I’m not lazy, just, well, situationally challenged.

    • Ted S.

It’s a lot more difficult to squeeze.

      • UnCivilServant

        Give it a hug instead.

    • UnCivilServant

If it’s a “Forever” roll, why does it need Refills? Is this false advertizing?

      • Ownbestenemy

Given what people sue for, I don’t doubt it will be filed somewhere

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

First The Neverending Story and now this…it’s outrageous.

      • UnCivilServant

When I watched “The Neverending Story” as a kid, I thought it lived up to it’s name well enough. I was so bored out of my skull I was happy when it was over.

Perhaps an abstract concept such as “the nothing” as the antagonistic threat isn’t a good fit for small children.

      • rhywun

Yeah, my first thought is “class action lawsuit”.

      • rhywun

        “The Neverending Story”

At least we got a Limahl track out of it. That’s all I remember.
