Wednesday Morning Links

Home field advantage used to mean something. Not anymore. The Dodgers (BOO!) and Mariners both went on the road and left with a 2-0 series lead. I’d forgotten about this case. And that’s about it for a slow sports day. Moving on to the links.

I’m sure this will go over well with the taxpayers. “You’re here illegally and are hunkering down while the government agency with the authority to remove you is working in the area? Here, we’ll take money we don’t have and pay your rent with it” wouldn’t go over well in a civilized part of the country. Let’s see how it plays there.

Oh no, not “upheaval.” Prosecutors are removed all the time when administrations change. But it draws gasps from the media when Trump does it for some reason.

Good. Now hurry up with the ruling. Title IX is black letter law. Don’t let the previous admin get away with perverting its text and don’t let states do so either.

“She shouldn’t have worn that short skirt.” Heaven forbid they go after the people committing crimes when they can force others to spend more money.

Nobody is above the law. Well, they shouldn’t be anyway. We’ll see how this plays out, but this lady is looking stupider and more brazen by the day.

Oh no! Anyway… I simply don’t care if they blow up every single narcoterrorist boat in the Caribbean.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Without governments forcing people to buy EVs, expect to see even more of this.

What’s wrong with these people? You get a chance to stay alive and continue holding your own people hostage, and you’re gonna queer the deal by doing shit like this? Fucking scumbags.

And another one gone. I hope their relocating employees leave their retarded politics at home.

Damn, dude. Go rent a reefer trailer or something. Or just say you’re full. Anything but this.

Continuing the rocking from Monday. Albeit with a different band. I don’t expect any complaints. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely Wednesday, dear friends.

Come on Brewers. I already have little interest in the World Series.

    • WTF

Very few people outside of the west coast will care about an LA – Seattle WS.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Why should any of us ever care about east cost sports?

        /Seattle fan.

      • slumbrew

Unless you’re a Dogers fan, or have a heart of stone, you’d want to see Seattle finally win one.

      • SDF-7

        Unless you’re a Dogers fan

Wait… those internet meme pups have a major league team now? Who knew….

      • Threedoor

Zwak, why should any of us care about the east coast at all? Rust and humidity.

    • KSuellington

The only interest I have is who is going to beat the fucking Dodgers. They are going to the WS for sure. It would be nice to see the Mariners do it.

  2. Rat on a train

General Motors said on Oct. 14 that it will bear a $1.6 billion loss to scale back its electric vehicle (EV) operations, citing weaker expected demand following recent U.S. policy changes that ended federal EV tax credits and loosened emissions rules.
Now end the rooftop solar subsidies so those companies stop bothering me.

    • UnCivilServant

🤔 Could one government put a 100% tax on the value of a subsidy put in place by another government? Just index it so that it always cancels out?

      • Rat on a train

Structure is similar to how states tax Medicaid providers to siphon federal funds?

      • UnCivilServant

I don’t know how that one works. I was thinking about how to make it pointless for state level subsidies to be added, so removing the fed and having them tax state subsidies came to mind.

  3. UnCivilServant

    Morning.

For once, I have nothing coming to mind to remark on.

I do feel obligated to make noise.

    Apologies for wasting your time.

    • Grummun

Let’s talk about your completely misguided take on chocolate.

      I keed, I keed.

Seriously, though, I’m contemplating a third article completely about the sins of Hershey’s.

      • UnCivilServant

So far my experience with specialty choclates has ranged from “what’s so special?” to “tastes like spooning cocoa powder stright from the can”

You’re free to send me argument chocolates to change my mind.

      • SDF-7

You going to ask for nylons too, UCS?

      • UnCivilServant

No, SDF, I’m a glutton, not a transvestite.

      • SDF-7

Not even a sweet transvestite from Transexual Transylvania apparently…. So noted.

      • Nephilium

I’ve recently (say in the past year or two) started seeing cocoa beans popping up at some of the produce stands up at the West Side Market. I’ve been tempted to buy one a couple of times, even though I can’t think of a use case.

      • UnCivilServant

Unless you shell out the hefty price for a melanger, you’re not going to get much out of the beans themselves. The grainy texture from being processed any other way will be distracting and diminishing.

Unless you’re one of those weirdos who just snack on the beans directly.

      • Nephilium

        UCS:

These are about the length of my forearm. I mean, I could always make my own chocolate bitters or chocolate liqueur with one.

      • slumbrew

        UCS, you have inspired me.

        *clears throat*

So far my experience with 20-year-old single malt whisky has been “what’s so special?”

You’re free to send me argument bottles to change my mind.

      • UnCivilServant

That’s a pod, not a bean. The beans are inside the pods.

So it’s even worse because the beans are unfermented, meaning they’re not useful yet.

      • SDF-7

slumbrew — I’d start asking “What’s so special about Sydney Sweeny”… but I think my wife would still take umbrage even with this new paradigm…

      • slumbrew

I like the cut of your jib, SDF.

      • UnCivilServant

@Mr Ilium – do you know which cultivar? I think some of them have a natural sweetness in the not-pith material between the beans. So that might be of use.

Or you could go whole hog and ferment the beans yourself, whereupon you will have chocolate flavor.

      • UnCivilServant

@Slumbrew – I have no intention of changing your mind. Whiskeys and whiskys are not something people should spend money on. Distill your own and drink it fresh.

      • Not Adahn

Why do you deny SCIENCE!? Obviously humans are descended from scavengers and thus we require aging/fermenting of our foodstuffs.

      • EvilSheldon

sends Slumbrew a pint of Old Smuggler for comparison purposes…

      • slumbrew

        Thanks, ES!

I have some paint that needs stripping…

      • Threedoor

        The sins of Hersheys.

That involves their highway no doubt.

  4. SDF-7

It isn’t like LA has anything else they could be spending money on.

    Like the fire department.

    Or water storage.

    Or sewage.

Or actually dealing with the homeless.

Or streamlining permits so taxpaying citizens might rebuild their homes and not be driven out…

Nope… the true priority is gulag style packed housing near mass transit for the non-citizens, because that’s going to be the voting base once they kill off or drive away all the icky people who actually pay for things now. And it will all be fairy dust, rainbows and unicorn farts… from the Pacific to Barstow.

I’m not a violent person at heart… but I truly believe every generation before 1910 at least would have tarred and feathered at minimum these horrendous “public servants”. Lincoln would have sent Sherman in by now.

    • juris imprudent

You keep forgetting that this is the govt that those people voted for. Let them get it, good and hard, and for as long as possible. Otherwise the lesson won’t stick.

      • WTF

The lesson will not be learned, never mind stick. Leftists are incapable of drawing the connection between the policies they vote for and the consequences of those policies. It only didn’t work because of wreckers and Kulaks, and they just need to prog harder.

      • SDF-7

You keep forgetting that this is the govt that those people the SEIU and the Teachers Union voted for

You forget I’ve seen California politics — the government unions are very very good at what they do there. And they’ve crafted the governments from top to bottom so the actual tax payers have as little say as possible.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

sdf is right. Given the lack of transparency in California’s elections, is it any wonder that one party, no matter how destructive, dominates? Yes, the two major cites are the 800 pound gorillas, but when there is no way to trust elections…

      • juris imprudent

See I assume that there really are that many idiot voters, not that the will of the people is being thwarted by dark conspiratorial forces.

      • SDF-7

I’m not trying to characterize it as “the will of the people”, just that the people who actually have to shoulder the cost are intentionally kept a minority (so their votes can’t overwhelm typically) and the unions are very very good at mobilizing their votes… so the sloth and apathy is what keeps out “the will of the people”.

Not a dark conspiracy… just politics as usual when the unions use the dues from the contracts they negotiate using the government officials they elect to swamp advertising and keep their rank and file voting as directed.

      • rhywun

        those people voted

That is the crux of the issue. The only way out of the mess is to stop throwing money out the window or to stop allowing people to vote themselves other people’s money.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

The problem with that, JI, is that until their is actual transparency, there is no way of knowing what the actual outcome of any given election truly is.

The worse thing about the various machinations of the political left is the destruction of integrity, not any cheating.

      • EvilSheldon

The lesson won’t stick anyway. Progressives aren’t capable of learning.

    • R C Dean

I think LA is already spending far too much “dealing with the homeless”. In fact, I think that’s a major reason they have so many.

      • UnCivilServant

That and there’s no winter frost.

      • SDF-7

That’s why I said “actually dealing with”. I’m assuming some mix of prisons and asylums would be needed, frankly. Not the perpetual feeding of NGOs they’re doing now, natch.

      • R C Dean

I guess my point was, you could actually deal with the homeless for less than they spend now.

      • Mad Scientist

Stop giving politicians credit for wanting to solve the homeless problem. They want no such thing.

You and I see homeless people. Politicians spend our money on their cronies “for the homeless.” The more homeless, the more graft. They have every incentive to keep this racket going indefinitely.

  5. SDF-7

But it draws gasps from the media when Trump does it for some reason.

ORANGE MAN BAAAAAD! PUDDING BRAINS BETTER! BAAAA!

That seems to be the extent of their logic, in any event.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

      Pretty much.

    • (((Jarflax

Politics as team sport shows humanity at its worst. People end up actually hoping things will go badly in ways that impact their own lives because they think the disaster will show the other team in a bad light.

  6. Common Tater

“Workers and unions are praising the law, saying it will boost job growth and help keep staffers safe. ”

    Because they lobbied for it?

    • UnCivilServant

I know nothing about the law, but if Unions are in favor, it’s almost certainly a bad idea.

    • Common Tater

“The National Retail Federation said shoplifting nearly doubled between 2019 and 2023, right when self-checkout was becoming increasingly popular.”

And stealing less than $950 was legal?

      • sloopyinca

It also doubled during Covid. So by their logic, we should be blaming the Chinese for the rise in shoplifting.

      • DrOtto

It wasn’t legal, it was just announced in a very public fashion that it wouldn’t be prosecuted. Pair that with most corporate stores policies of not going hands on with suspected shoplifters and you saw the results.

      • rhywun

I don’t blame them when stopping a thief can get you a bullet in the head these days.

But no worries. That sort of crime is “normal”; just ask the Democrats that run those places.

    • Rat on a train

Bell also argued that the rules will ensure that grocery companies spend less on security — including plexiglass containers, new ink tags, or private guards — and actually help with profits.
The city said it would next take up legislation on streamlining inventory and store layout. “Business owners don’t have the knowledge required to make such decisions.”

    • rhywun

Are you telling me it has nothing to do with “a tension between the rich and the poor” or “residents who live below the federal poverty line”??

JFC that article is mendacious AF. That said, the law is BS and won’t solve anything, either.

  7. SDF-7

Heaven forbid they go after the people committing crimes when they can force others to spend more money.

Revoking the “shoplifting is not a crime” last year (I think it was last year) was a start, certainly. Not sure if the DAs have started actually prosecuting… but yeah, coming down hard on the actual criminals is the pendulum swing that needs to happen… Given how much California seems willing to tolerate (see LA and rent above), not holding my breath… just hoping I can get the houses consolidated and sell the CA one before the rampaging mobs of cannibals or whatnot start roaming the countryside.

  8. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Of course Canada doesn’t give the home field advantage.

I mean, did anyone think otherwise?

  9. SDF-7

    Nobody is above the law.

Certainly North Carolina should be extraditing her “tenant” niece… might be some interesting information in a plea bargain there as well.

Given NC’s governor (assuming it is still the “Let the MAGA people flood, I don’t care!” asshole), not holding my breath on this either.

    • sloopyinca

Apparently it’s not a crime worthy of extradition under NC law. I read that in a piece the other day.

      • DrOtto

Most states won’t extradite for most crimes unless it’s a biggie. They just wait for you to show up again and get you. Or if they are part of a compact with another state, they may put an administrative suspension on your driver’s license until you get said issue resolved. You won’t find out about said suspension until you go to renew.

      • rhywun

        Assaulting a cop?!

But damn this story just gets better and better.

  10. SDF-7

This is the tip of the iceberg.

I’m hoping with the Big Bloated Bill at least killing various green subsidies we’ll see similar trends in solar and wind as well — and maybe the “Green Revolution” types can find out what the true market values of all this “Wave of the Future” crap really is.

My personal expectation is that the true market for EVs is there (they make sense for some) but is small, the battery tradeoffs aren’t entirely understood and might still kill the market… and what little market there is would be handled well by Tesla assuming rabid politics doesn’t dissuade their probable customer base.

Since I own no stock I’m aware of (401k management hides this so well I can’t really know) that would be affected… I’ll just sit back and see along with the rest of y’all.

    • rhywun

see similar trends in solar and wind as well

Reality will win in the end; it’s inevitable. Luxury beliefs never last forever.

“Look… we’ve killed so many people and have so many corpses lying around — sometimes we mix them up a little! Mea culpa…”

None of the unaccounted for hostages that were released alive were female. I don’t know how many of the supposedly dead ones were.

The reasons for trying to slip a ringer into the body bag include:

      (1) The real deal would show evidence of torture/abuse.
      (2) The real deal was executed too recently. Turning over a fresh corpse as part of an exchange is a really bad look.

I think both of those reasons make me wonder how many of the dead ones were female. If any were still alive last week, I can definitely see why the Palis wouldn’t want to turn her over so she could testify about what she went through.

      • Nephilium

I’ve read at least some sources claiming that all female hostages were released in earlier hostage swaps. It’s a reasonable enough thing that I can believe it, and I already think so little of Hamas that the veracity (or not) of that couldn’t lower my opinion of them.

Federal Government Shutdown – Day 15

Factions have begun to form. You’d think there would be clear lines and alliances by job funtion, but it seems we have broken by floor level instead.

The first floor, the Keyboard Warriors. Managerial staff, harmless enough as there is no pay for them to withhold foesnt scare much of the other factions. Their power comes from control of bureaucratic processes and their leaders, The Three, former GS-13s with the power of none.

However, they hired a mercenary group that is rumored to live deep in the bowels of the building. These fabled men have stories of old that they breath fire and ice, conjure water to appear in various spots in the building and are said to control the thermodynamic stability of the entire facility through means not listed in the maintenance manual.

The second floor consists of the Trolls and Intelligi. A mix-mash group of controllers, the Trolls, sitting aimlessly in the dark staring at computer screens remote viewing objects in the sky at great lengths.

The Intelligi was once the men and women who maintained and calibrated the sophisticated machinary that the Trolls utilized. The relationship has always been symbiotic.

The last group is the Tower Flowers. Do not let this let your guard down. They are fierce warriors of their power, sotting high upon us, watching us, judging us. They also can see outside and that the world is normal, but always report to the other factions that it is the opposite.

I sit in limbo, of neither faction as my paperwork from the times before was never processed but was released by one of the Three. This percieved role of neutrality has me perfectly situated to observe and document this bureaucratic island of absurdities.

“”A beef over a food order mix-up sparked a vicious, seven-person brawl inside a Texas Whataburger last week, according to reports and authorities.

Police were dispatched to the San Antonio Whataburger just after 3 a.m. last Sunday in response to the wild melee, the San Antonio Police Department told KSAT.

“Part of another table’s order was mistakenly brought to my son and his friends. Instead of the staff acknowledging their error, they reportedly told the other customers, ‘They have your food,’” mother Rebecca Noel posted on Facebook alongside a video of the fight.”

      • Sensei

It was too big, too fragile and a magnet for disease.

        ….

Its thin skin is easily punctured by its own stem, which means workers must hand-clip the fruit from the tree, cutting productivity in half. The tree tends to produce more apples than it can handle, so growers must thin out the fruit. The Thorntons spray the trees frequently to treat an endemic calcium deficiency.

And to coax the apple into developing its signature red-pink hue, workers lay out sheets of reflective material by hand. Even a healthy apple is susceptible to bitter pit, a disorder that marks the skin with black splotches and ruins the fruit’s flesh.

      • UnCivilServant

        I see.

When I buy apples I tend to go with Granny Smiths. They have a sharper flavor and are rarely mushy. I hope they’re easy to grow.

      • trshmnstr

It’s finicky, prone to calcium deficiency, and has to be hand picked.

The best apples I’ve eaten have been of the varieties “Sweet Sixteen” and “Gold Rush.”

However, most “Sweet Sixteen” are not as good as the one I bought at the General Store in Woodstock VT. I’ve only encountered “Gold Rush” once, so I can’t comment on variability.

    • EvilSheldon

I read somewhere that the vast majority of Honeycrisp apples (which I love, BTW) are unsaleable, and get repurposed into juice.

      • Nephilium

That would track with the large amount of Honeycrisp branded cider and juice I see on the shelves.

Different apple varieties have different uses, some work great for baking, others great for eating out of hand, others great for juice/cider.

    • Pope Jimbo

This year is expected to bring a bumper Honeycrisp crop, but farmers aren’t celebrating. A big harvest can send prices plummeting broadly as retailers discount other varieties like Gala or Fuji to compete with cheaper Honeycrisps. Apple growers say they’re at the mercy of the volatile Honeycrisp, unsure from season to season how it’s going to affect the price of their other varieties.

Fucking farmers. Not a good year? “Waaaah, I hardly have anything to sell!!” (but at least the price/bushel is high). Good year for crops? “Waaaaah, prices are too low!!!!” (but you have a lot to sell).

Growing up in a semi-farming area I watched these farmers go through boom and busts year after year. Basically you end up with pretty much the same amount each year, but you spend all year bitching. They also chase the “hot” crop. Last year someone planted soy beans and made a killing so next year everyone plants soy beans which leads to a glut and low prices. Corn is another good example of this.

I’d throw them all in jail, except they own the best hunting land so I guess I’ll let them off.

      • UnCivilServant

Saw someone with a mail-in ballot show how it is possible for an unsuspecting voter to put the ballot in and have the vote choice visible through a hole in the envelope. I think the holes are there for a machine to determine if the envelope is empty, but it was suspiciously easy to get the spot for “no” to line up with one and see if it was marked.

My charity that this was obliviousness or incompetence is long depleted.

BREAKING: College kids say stupid shit.

“The Young Republicans, a national GOP college grassroots organization, was last night plunged into chaos after leaked group chats, where members referred to black people as monkeys and praised Adolf Hitler, were published by Politico….

Vance argued that Democrats were silent when leaked messages showed the party’s Virginia attorney general nominee, Jay Jones, once called for the former Virginia House speaker to be shot and wished another GOP politician’s children dead.

The vice president said: ‘This is far worse than anything said in a college group chat, and the guy who said it could become the AG of Virginia.’
    ….
‘Translation: “Because a politician for the other team said something indefensible, I shall refuse to criticize something else indefensible said by my team” is exactly the kind moral cowardice and sophistry I’ve come to expect from our Vice President,’ wrote The Dispatch editor-in-chief Jonah Goldberg on X.””

    Arkansas Worker
    @ArkansasWorker
    Stalin on individualism and collectivism…
    —-
There is no, nor should there be, irreconcilable contrast between the individual and the collective, between the interests of the individual person and the interests of the collective.

There should be no such contrast, because collectivism, socialism, does not deny, but combines individual interests with the interests of the collective.

Socialism cannot abstract itself from individual interests. Socialist society alone can most fully satisfy these personal interests.

More than that; socialist society alone can firmly safeguard the interests of the individual. In this sense there is no irreconcilable contrast between ‘individualism’ and socialism.

But can we deny the contrast between classes, between the propertied class, the capitalist class, and the toiling class, the proletarian class?

On the one hand we have the propertied class which owns the banks, the factories, the mines, transport, the plantations in colonies.

These people see nothing but their own interests, their striving after profits. They do not submit to the will of the collective; they strive to subordinate every collective to their will.

The Super Bowl jumped the shark years ago, but this nobody is not even remotely interesting. At least with all the top name hip hop bullshit, there was a baked in audience, even if it wasn’t me.

      • The Other Kevin

That works both ways. If a “protester” is shot, they will be canonized. If an ICE agent is shot, the shooter will be canonized.

Our 24 hour gym event raised $1000 for a local charity. Mrs. TOK called them yesterday to let them know. We hadn’t told them we were doing this. The woman on the phone was stunned for a few minutes. She’s in the middle of the very stressful planning of a black-tie fundraiser, and to have someone call out of the blue and say “btw we’re going to drop off a check for $1000” was a nice surprise.

    • Rat on a train

      • UnCivilServant

But but how are the hobnobbers supposed to virtue signal to their fellows about how charitable they are without black ties?

      • The Other Kevin

As far as fundraisers go, this one was pretty efficient. The only cost was us buying snacks and pizza. Mrs. TOK had to plan out the workouts, but she had a head start from our last event.

Speaking of stunned, I was at a fundraising banquet on Saturday night (for a group of local doctors trying to build a new hospital building in Honduras). One of my friends at my table made a stunning pledge of $20,000! I’ve known him for 20 years, and while thinking him about as well off in retirement as me, could not conceive of him having that kind of money to give to a charity. My $300 donation was kind of embarrassing.

The credit, officially started under the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008, revised under The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and expanded under former President Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, had been a key driver of EV sales in the United States.

“Following recent U.S. government policy changes, including the termination of certain consumer tax incentives for EV purchases and the reduction in the stringency of emissions regulations, we expect the adoption rate of EVs to slow,” GM said in a filing.

Unfortunately, I’ve only had the truck for 18 months, so I’m not sure how used and abused the cluster is.

I do know that it has substantially declined over the past year, and the unresponsive thing is new. It does seem to respond well to smacking the front “glass”, so it’s still drivable for now.

The downtime is a concern, but probably workable.

“A “student media advisor” at Oregon State University complained about Olohan and Allen’s scheduled speaking engagements at the conference and took it up with organizers on a Zoom call. He said he wouldn’t allow OSU students to attend if these two were speaking.

Steven Sandberg told the Columbia Journalism Review that he was tipped off by the “faith track” portion of the conference. “I saw pretty far-right, anti-LGBTQ language,” he said.

He took his concerns to the College Media Association, Associated Collegiate Press, and the Society of Professional Journalists, who jointly organize MediaFest. He said, “These speakers’ work doesn’t exist in a vacuum. LGBTQ students are feeling targeted by our administration, by the government, and by society. So I was disappointed to see them bring in people who espoused anti-LGBTQ views.”

What he meant by “anti,” of course, was “factual.” Olohan has written a book recounting the experiences of people who have detransitioned, that’s people who were eaten up by the medical industrial complex in service to the lie that they could change sex only to be spit out the other side damaged, maimed, and even worse off than they were before. Allen’s big crime was just writing for The Daily Signal, which is backed by the Heritage Foundation.”

Bill Lindeke is an “urban geographer” and is always writing stories for the local proggie website about how great mass transit is. He always pushes for population density where everyone can walk every where. I think deep down, he thinks letting people use bicycles is a bit too permissive. In his ideal world bicycles would be replaced by those pedal pub deals where 12 people sit and pedal together.

Anyhow, I can’t quit him. No matter how silly his columns are, I keep reading.

This story is typical. All that mass transit needs is a mobile app!

From time to time, I meet someone new to Minneapolis or St. Paul who intends to try out the transit system. It might be an incoming college kid, a transplant, or an older person who downsized and moved to an urban area. I tell them that transit is great, but using it can be harder than they think. Without a few tips and tricks, the experience can quickly sour.

For example, always board the front car of the train when taking light rail. (The second or middle cars attract bad behavior, and all the regulars know this, which makes the situation even worse.) Don’t make eye contact or talk to with people unless absolutely necessary.

Yes, yes, I know it is dumb that a complete mass transit bobo starts a column where he admits that 2/3 of the train is a no-go zone, but that is what makes Bill great.

    • Pope Jimbo

Based on some of his comments in the story, I’m sure Bill is a big believer in the fact that Voter ID laws are too onerous for the common rube.

Contactless payment is the latest big innovation: Riders can use almost any credit card to pay fares, without any other hoops. The technology is available in cities like New York City and Portland, Oregon, and removes a hurdle for tourists or visitors for whom simply acquiring a transit card can be a deal breaker. This major leap forward from the era of physical tokens, which were part of my first transit experience of the Boston T in the 1990s.

Imagine! Trying to buy a transit card. From one of the many, many vending machines at each station. Way too hard.

    • Pope Jimbo

If paying for a ride (which most don’t bother to do anyhow), imagine the difficulty in … reading a map

Knowing schedules has long been another larger barrier for transit noobs, especially things like frequency and span (i.e. how early or late a bus might run). In the old days, route schedules used to be arcane knowledge reserved for insiders, those who had access to the hundreds of labyrinthine printed schedules and who knew how to read them. In those years, Metro Transit didn’t even have bus stop signs with information on them, something that once prompted a grassroots DIY movement of self-made signage.

  48. The Late P Brooks

Don’t make eye contact or talk to with people unless absolutely necessary.

    They’ll just demand cake.

  49. Pope Jimbo

    Speaking of mass transit….

Whycome no one rides buses and trains? NGO dedicated to mass transit pinky swears that everyone really wants more mass transit

The Twin Cities remains a car-dominated metro, with 84% of all trips occurring by vehicle, according to data from the Metropolitan Council. The Covid-19 pandemic caused a rapid dropoff in transit use and upended traditional travel patterns, and brought a rise in criminal and antisocial behavior on light rail lines.

Polling conducted by Move Minnesota and research firm Data for Progress shows that people are curious about non-car options, Carpio said. One-fifth of all Minnesotans surveyed by the group said they’d prefer not to drive for transportation, and one-third of respondents in the Twin Cities’ seven-county metro said the same.

    There is also this gem:

Metro Transit ridership has not bounced back from the pandemic and lags behind other systems across the country, the Star Tribune reported in August.

But Metro Transit is expanding service. The network has improved frequency on its most used routes, and launched two new lines to its Metro service, which includes light rail and bus rapid transit routes.

Everyone knows that when you don’t have customers, you should expand your capital outlays and increase operating expenses.

By the way, Honeycrisp apples are lame. The new hotness? The kudos apple!

First of all, let’s talk about the new Kudos apple. It sounds like an amazing combination. The University of Minnesota crossed its Zestar with its Honeycrisp, making it a sister to the ever-popular Sweetango apple. The new Kudos will be ready for harvesting in late September, and pretty red in color. The apples are supposed to have a sweet, well-balanced with tropical overtones flavor. That sounds interesting! Tropical overtones? Does that mean pineapply? Coconutty? That’s what I think of when I think tropical.

The apple is described as being very crisp as well as juicy, with the color being an 85 to 98% blush red color. The apple is supposed to keep very well in storage for up to 5 months.

I tasted the kudos at THE State Fair this year and thought it was OK. I thought it was very similar to a Honeycrisp. The Altar Boy who is a fiend about apples absolutely loved it.
