the project was coming along so well, everything was beautiful. I made the mistake of starting my pour at the wrong time of day. As a result, my resin came out slightly wrinkled, which I initially thought no big deal, I’d seen worse waves, but then I set it in the sunshine to cure rock hard, and when I came back an hour later, I found this.

The resin cooled before it outgassed, and when it warmed up the air said I want out! Fuuuck! My project was essentially ruined, all that time wasted, and I still have my custom chess pieces, so what now?
I completely change styles, no more resin, block and mirror, to great effect.

So I got out my good old metal cast blue and purchased some 2 inch mirrors and added them in. What you see is the coating over the mirrors until I’m finished, we shall see.
next was to get a frame, and this time, I made sure it was at least 16 and a 1/2 inches to accommodate the little stretch that I get from the 2 inch squares.that being said on we went and I lined it up, I could have used glass or plastic. I chose plastic just due to the stress wear and tear and well, we’ll see.

last is the frame, nice,

I did the pieces early on nice and blue and white pearlescent, I think the whole thing fits in really well. I may go ahead and coat them, but we’ll see, until then, this is what you see thanks and have a good time.

lovely work
Thankee Sir,
Nice looking board.
When my wife and I were first dating, she refused to learn chess, since she knew I was pretty good. So we would play other games instead.
I never beat her at backgammon, and she’s never beaten me at Othello.
Now my chess skills have atrophied to the point where I would be trounced by a clever eight-year old.
I completely lack the “strategy” gene that chess requires. I suck at all such games. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I could never remember all those rules. I can identify the pieces.
That looks very nice. (Admission: I really liked the board’s different colors and ‘patterns’ contrasted with the blue.) Ah. (*pssst* “They’re reflecting, ev.”)
“But of course, Evan.”
The pieces are damn cool. Strongly, strongly approve. Well done.
Im glad you caught the subtlety in the colors and design,
Cheers!
Looks good!
How often does resin fail like that?
It only happens if you have inconsistent temperatures. In my case, the temperature started out fine and fell through the evening, slowing down the catalyst and allowing the gas to be trapped. Once it warmed up in the the daylight, the next day, done.
