I think one of Modi’s biggest drivers is the fact he sees CCP China as an existential threat to India. I am going to be spending a fairly significant (for me) amount of time offline at the beginning of March. I guess I’ll need to pre-cast some stuff.
Mom has moved into a retirement home and wants me to pre-loot the last house she and Dad lived in. I should probably make a list. It is going to make me sad to see things that she valued not being picked up by her descendants, but none of us got the house-decorating bug like she had.
I’m not looking forward to that. However, it doesn’t read like assisted living or the dreaded “memory care”.
It’s not. She’s moving because my sister did and she wants to be in the same town as her for when she does start going downhill. I’d be happy if she moved up here but making a new start as an oldster is probably a LOT easier in San Antonio than upstate NY.
We’re going through some of the same symptoms. I have a few artifacts from my parents. We’ve been giving away the mundane things to friends that have a bigger and younger family. I force fed boxes of photos on my kids by surprising them but if it’s not on an Iphone it’s too local.
A few things that missed the last boating accident are still being pondered…
The best things my parents did before they passed was:
a) Got pre-paid funeral plans. Removing all that was a huge win. We actually got money back from the burials. My wife and I are in the process of finding a plan for ourselves.
b) Decluttered the house. They did a lot of work getting rid of stuff. When we started in on what was left, I was surprised at how little was left in the storage rooms. Again, it removed a big weight from my sister’s and I’s back. Wife and I are trying (or at least one of us is) to do the same.
The wife and I’s parents have mostly passed, and the one left (my mother) has been hell bent on spending any and everything she and her husband made. Now they live in a mobile home in a park with nothing. And this is a woman who built and owned a multi-million real estate management empire.
I do have the bug for, not decorating exactly, but stuff in general. I have the collecting gene, much like my father and my son. And this does cause fights with my wife, who doesn’t really have it.

Our old cat had been declawed and we put bells on his collar and he still came home with dead animals every morning. He’d proudly lay out his latest kill on the deck and wait to be let in.
He was 50% feral. He stayed at our house just to get some good Z’s in.
The current cat is 100% domesticated and catches a few mice in the garage, but that is it. Of course he is snow white and would be picked off by the local owl in about 10 minutes if we ever let him out at night.
They cut the video off before it showed the cat running inside the house with his new trophy (which is still alive). Then letting it go so it can catch it again.

Anyone have a recommendation for a dumb wireless camera?
I’m working through the accessories included when I bought my new 3D printer back in November (delivered in December, but I’ve been procrastinating on things). The camera included in the set (it was ‘free’ as part of the Black Friday bundle) doesn’t work if you don’t use their cloud services. I don’t use their cloud services, and as such it can’t even be connected to my local network.
So what I’m trying to find is a dumb camera small enough to fit in the upper corner of the enclosure where the provided camera would have gone. I don’t want a cloud anything, just connect to wifi. (for the main printer you could sideload wifi data in a text file, so I can see an SD card with that info being used)
if all else fails, I could just hang the potatocam from its ribbon cable in there, but then I’d have to figure out where to attach the raspberry pi.

I went Saturday because I come from a union family. My dad and my brother are both in the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 290. So I’m a union kid. I was really excited about worker solidarity with immigrants. One of the things that’s really upsetting about the time that we’re living in is that it seems like people with power who are abusing their power are pitting groups against each other. So it felt like the opposite of that. It just felt really positive. And then my daughter thought she would see her science teacher there. She’s a middle schooler, and her science teacher had said, “Oh, you might see me in an inflatable costume.” So she was excited to go.
I really thought this was going to be a family-friendly event. Like, we are not people who are interested in throwing down with cops or getting ourselves in trouble. We did not come with a gas mask or anything. I mean, I wouldn’t have brought my kid to something that I thought was going to be dangerous.
