Friday Morning Links

Arizona throttled Arkansas. Illinois beat Houston, Purdue took out Texas, and Iowa outlasted Nebraska. The Big Ten appears to have showed up for this tournament (aside from Ohio State laying an egg). Let’s see what today brings. In soccer news, Northern Ireland and Ireland both went out of the WC knockout qualifiers, as did Wales and Ukraine. Italy are alive and hoping to make their first WC in some time. The field will be set next Tuesday once the playoffs are done. MLB opened up yesterday, which is very much a welcome event. And F1 is in Japan this weekend, which is starting to mean less and less to me every time I see these new cars trotted out. That’s it for sports, so I’m moving on.

This is such a tragic story. The state failed her over and over again…until she asked the state to go ahead and kill her. Then they finally did what she expected of them.

No wonder they’re so aggressive. You know, if they were teenagers, the government would probably propose drugging them up with downers to keep them under control. As for me, I’m just happy that they’re having a good time.

Way to fold, pussies. Although it comes as no surprise.

Of course they arrested him. He’s making them look inept. And that’s what they do to people who make them look inept.

What does he mean by “taking over?” They took that institution over a loooooong time ago.

What “dilemma” is there? Just get rid of it or send it to a museum. There’s no need for all the performative bullshit.

You gotta be more clear with your marketing, people. “Helpline” could mean more than one thing.

Ahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Get a second amendment, people. Then you can threaten people in a civilized manner. Or shoot these lizard people. It’s up to you.

Wow, that’s the tits. Literally. (Yes, its SFW.)

I honestly believe these people would complain about anything. More=bad. Less=bad. Funny I don’t hear the visitors complaining, just the activists.

Such a fun song. From a really fun band. And here’s another for you. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely Friday and weekend, dear friends.

  1. WTF

Way to fold, pussies. Although it comes as no surprise.

This is why people who disagree with Democrats don’t bother voting for Republicans. What’s the fucking point when they will just give the Dems what they want anyway.

    • R C Dean

I have days (and seemingly more all the time) where that’s pretty much where I am.

    • rhywun

Also, they see the writing on the wall. The Dems are about to get the open borders of their dreams in a few short months. I would not want to be a college co-ed walking along the shore in Chicago next semester.

    • Ownbestenemy

It was an agreement that largely gave Schumer and Senate Democrats what they wanted — no funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and parts of Customs and Border Protection (CBP). But it lacked the stringent reforms they desired, like requiring judicial warrants or requiring agents to unmask.

Isnt ICE/CBP funded thru 2029 anyway? So Im not sure how big a cave this is except come January 2027, but even then, I doubt it will be some super majority in eaither houses to make much moves.

      • rhywun

The Dems will take both houses in the midterms and cancel that funding if they can, would be my guess.

      • juris imprudent

        funded thru 2029

Seriously doubt that – operations and maintenance money has a one-FY lifespan.

      • Ownbestenemy

        Cato opined otherwise ji

Under the OBBBA, ICE received roughly $75 billion in new budget authority—seven times ICE’s typical annual budget of $10 billion. These funds remain available to the current administration whether Congress passes an annual budget or not.

      • juris imprudent

Yeah, budget isn’t appropriation. They can only spend what is appropriated and I would guess the budget bit is to allow them to spend (at that level) under continuing resolutions (vice proper annual appropriations). I used to deal with RDT&E funding in DoD and that was considered golden because it was good across two FYs.

    • AlexinCT

The democrats are focused on their evil goals, and willing to do anything and everything to get them. The republicans just want to enjoy the benefits of power without any serious effort expendatures.

It is practically never about their voters…,

    • Drake

This is how they behave with both houses of Congress and the Presidency. They don’t even pretend to fight for the mandate that got them there.

    • invisible finger

Driving a wedge through conservatives is easier than a hot knife through butter.

  2. Shpip

And in 2023, the then president, Luis Lacalle Pou, announced that the sculpture would be melted down and recast – only to backtrack days later after a public outcry.

We could’ve used that guy in Richmond a few years ago.

    • ron73440

I don’t understand all of this uproar over a swastika.

It’s like we are medieval peasants scared of an evil talisman.

Same thing with the whole retarded N-word thing.

Symbols and words only have power if you let them have power, why do the idiots insist on giving things power?

The people that actually fought the Nazi’s and grew up in the aftermath of WWII were not afraid of the symbols, I remember an episode of the Carrol Burnett show where Harvey Korman was dressed in a full Nazi uniform running a restaurant and it was hilarious.

      • rhywun

why do the idiots insist on giving things power?

Because they want power over you.

      • ron73440

        Don’t mention the war!

One of my favorite jokes of all time:

        Basil: Is there something wrong?

German: Will you stop talking about the war?

        Basil: Me? You started it.

German: We did not start it!

Basil: Yes, you did. You invaded Poland.

      • (((Jarflax

Modern humans, medieval peasants, slaves laboring in the earliest agriculture, nomadic herdsmen, and stone age hunter gatherers are all human beings with all the flaws humans are prone to, that includes culturally forbidden acts and symbols becoming imbued with a mystical taboo status.

I read that a Boston paper also ran an article flogging a moral panic because the number of calls to their gambling helpline had doubled.

    • Fourscore

They need to ask a taxi driver…

  4. Not Adahn

To be fair, gambling is a tax on stupid people.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Yeah, but they all had a sure thing.

      • UnCivilServant

Nah, the people who expect to win shouldn’t be gambling.

      • Ted S.

They’re not: they’re raking off the vig.

    • UnCivilServant

Gambling is not about the winnings. it’s about the entertainment along the way.

One birthday I was in Kentucky, went to Churchill Downs and bet on the horses. My allocated betting pool ran out and I stopped. The last race there were only four horses, and I managed to pick the one that came in third. (The bet I’d placed would have paid out for 1st or 2nd place).

I was buying entertainment (and the buffet).

      • Not Adahn

Back when dog racing was legal, I’d deliberately place show bets and make enough to cover my bar tab. Oddly enough the overwhelming majority of bartenders at the Houston dog track had never heard of a greyhound.

The point of going there was never the gambling (for me) though, it was just to hang out with friends.

      • Fourscore

My brother said that every time he drove by an Indian casino he just threw $20 out the window, saved time and didn’t need to look for a parking spot.

  5. Shpip

A staffing shortfall coupled with increased visitor numbers has already wreaked havoc at parks, and Chakrin fears this trend will continue. Delicate alpine meadows, shallow sequoia roots and other fragile resources will be trampled and destroyed without enough staff present to educate visitors.

You’d think that a simple “Keep Off The Grass” sign would be enough, but that would obscure the point, which is “Give Us Money.”

    • Ted S.

Also the people who don’t keep off the grass don’t, as a group, match the demographics of the general population or park goers?

    • Tonio

      “educate” [eye-roll]

    Re: cocaine sharks,

Many (most) automatic identification libraries for GC-MS tool were designed for drug use either in discovery and/or law enforcement. When they can’t find an actual match they can/do revert to what they know best, “identifying” the compound as an illegal drug.

I cannot tell you ow many times my GC-MS has tried to tell me various fun substances were in our fab air. Unlike Fillory, people are not clamoring to return to that workspace.

Their grounding lances are quite impressive. I never could figure out a way of smuggling the centimeter-thick braided copper cables out of the boneyard. Not to sell, they just looked cool.

That sounds like a great article waiting to be written, NA.

      • Not Adahn

      Bailed after S01/book 1 – worth it?

      • Not Adahn

I bailed before the last season, which means the second-to-last probably turned me off of the series. I don’t remember specifics, but I do remember a few interesting ideas that nobody else seemed to find interesting.

My 3 hours of online training didnt save my progress yesterday. My motiviation to go thru it again is diminished.

    • Rat on a train

Fortunately my latest round of mandatory training could be backgrounded.

      • Fourscore

No one showed up for the mandatory training and it was cancelled?

      • Ownbestenemy

In Government, the training would proceed regardless of attendance. Gotta grift better

Sharks in the Bahamas are consuming substances including caffeine, painkillers and even cocaine, according to a new study by marine scientists who say it could potentially impact the animals’ health and behavior.

This war has a rhythm that will continue.
Over the weekend, Trump will say and do batshit crazy stuff.
Before the market opens on Monday, Trump’s kids make some inside trades, then Trump announces peace talks and the war is almost over.
On Tuesday, the Israelis will try to blow up whoever is negotiating.
The rest of the week is a shit show of contradictory nonsense out of the White House.
    Rinse and repeat.

“A disgraced middle school teacher in New Jersey was arrested Thursday after her former student claimed she had sex with him in her car — and even in her classroom.

Ashley Fisler, 36, taught social studies at the Orchard Valley Middle School in Washington Township, Gloucester County, from 2014 to 2023, New Jersey 101.5 reported. Her purported victim — now an adult — alleged the pair had a sexual relationship while he was her pupil in 2021.”

“Plymouth Police Officer Samantha Pelrine, 31, and her husband, Daniel Forand, 37, were arrested after Pelrine was mysteriously suspended from her job last week.

The couple began abusing the 12-year-old victim soon after he moved in with them in 2019, court docs alleged.

Pelrine was arraigned on charges including three felony counts of aggravated rape of a child with force and one count of aggravated statutory rape of a child.”
