Saturday Morning Post-Election Links

by | Mar 21, 2026 | Daily Links, Politics | 123 comments

Oddly, we had our local election in Glibs Gulch on Wednesday rather than Tuesday because of a state law forbidding elections on St. Patrick’s Day. That seems counterintuitive since before voting is absolutely the most appropriate time to take a few slugs. In any case, with the village party registration running 95% Team Blue, a Team Red candidate is ridiculously overmatched. But it’s fine, I just had an excuse to take a few slugs myself. I still slightly outperformed the party percentages, but not by much. This is enough to win me some sympathy from Prime, so I’ll exploit that angle all I can when I see her tonight. She is comforting me at an excellent little pizza place that has the weirdest and most wonderful wine list of any place I’ve ever eaten.

Birthdays today include a guy who wrote some songs in between massive amounts of fucking; a guy whose work was truly transformative; a guy who completely trolled us on his last name; a guy whose life’s work turned out to be folly; a guy who was John Wayne long before there was a John Wayne; the Adolf Eichmann of grapes; Q’s spirit animal; a guy who has had sex with horses; a woman who has had sex with… god knows what; and a guy who totally didn’t get where he is because of his parents, nossir.

And, unlike Sloopy, my parents had zero to do with Links.

Nothing like Afghanistan, perish the thought.

Unlimited warfare.

It would be hilarious if one landed on the Al Aqsa mosque. It would, of course, be spun as Israel’s fault.

And of course this would never be treated with the same outrage and pity party indulgence as a hit in Gaza would. Then again, the Jews put their kids in shelters during an attack.

I’m as absolutist a 1A guy as you’ll ever meet, but this decision seems ludicrous on several levels. Non-paywall version.

California tried to do this to me. I was living in Texas when they unilaterally “attributed income” to me and sent me a tax bill.

California is also trying THIS and it will be shot down on appeal at light speed.

This guy is being hilariously ratioed in the comments and on the Twatters.

Screenshots are deniable.

If you’re a geek, you’ll immediately think “Gully Foyle.”

Good riddance.

The Old Guy gave this as a what-if problem to his intro physics students some years back. Damn good song, better than my homework problem.

We are leaving VA and moving to Florida. The recent bill to raise the tax rate to 10% was the final straw. We found a family to take over our homestead, livestock and all included, so it’s worked out well.

    Recalculating…

In an op-ed Friday, Hochul laid out a handful of significant changes she’s urging lawmakers to make to the state’s landmark 2019 climate law, which requires New York to slash its greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030 and 85% by 2050 – goals the state is already on track to miss.

That includes punting the regulations for the state’s emissions-cutting program for another four years to the end of 2030, a move that would effectively nullify that year’s mandate. Hochul then would add a new benchmark for 2040 and keep the 2050 mandate while changing the methodology used to calculate emissions, a move that would instantly put the state closer to meeting its goals.

The op-ed, published on the Empire Report, a news aggregation site, comes after Hochul has hinted for weeks that she wants to roll back the law known as the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which she once enthusiastically supported as a way to combat the negative effects of climate change.

Now, Hochul says she still supports the overall spirit of the law, but claims the state can’t meet the 2030 mandate without imposing major costs on utility customers.

What’s the problem? If you want people to use less of something, make it more expensive. You don’t think she’s worried about extreme right wing populism, do you?

  35. The Late P Brooks

Environmental advocates accused Hochul of trying to gut the climate law.

They’ve brought a lawsuit seeking to force the governor’s administration to finalize climate regulations it has delayed for more than a year, the same regulations Hochul is now trying to push to 2030. As currently proposed, those regulations would include a “cap-and-invest” program, which would set a cap on emissions and require polluters who exceed the cap to pay for “allowances” that would be used to fund climate-friendly projects.

Environmentalists say the climate law’s benefits more than cancel out any costs. They called on lawmakers to reject Hochul’s proposals.

Elizabeth Moran, New York policy advocate for Earthjustice, the nonprofit leading the lawsuit against the state, said Hochul’s plan would allow her to “ totally renege on the climate law so she can keep doing nothing instead of working together with the Legislature to drive down New Yorkers’ skyrocketing energy bills.”

A jury in California found that Elon Musk defrauded Twitter shareholders during the runup to his $44 billion acquisition of the social media company, according to a verdict issued on Friday.

Total damages could reach up to $2.6 billion, attorneys for the plaintiffs said.

    ——-

Musk’s attorneys argued their client’s remarks were based on well-founded concerns about bots, spam and fake accounts on Twitter, and did not amount to securities fraud or a scheme to depress the company’s stock price.

The jury said that though Musk had made false and misleading statements that harmed some Twitter shareholders, he did not engage in a specific scheme to defraud investors.

While the verdict marks a stinging rebuke for Musk, the financial implications are minimal considering his net worth, which currently sits at about $650 billion, according to Bloomberg.

What the heck. He can afford it.
