What I am Reading: Plug, Plug, Plug

Everyone here remembers in fondness the one Glib who has made it big. Gord Magill (aka Gordilocks) has been actively writing, speaking, and protesting for the world of truckers. An ex-pat Canadian now living in my neck of the woods, he rose to prominence during the Canadian truckers’ Freedom Convoy. Since then, he has appeared on every major TV news show, radio, and podcasts, and has been tirelessly writing op-eds and his own (HIGHLY recommended) Substack. And Tweets.

He attributes his big break to his exposure on glibertarians.com, but mayyyybe a strong talent for observation, writing, and story-telling will find its way to be known in this world. End of the Road deals with vaccinations, economics, lifestyles, mortality, morality, sociology… everything, and told from a libertarian perspective. Buy the fucking book, it’s enlightening, it’s infuriating, it’s wonderful.

I’m assuming you’re reading the kindle version, or did you use your TPTB status to get a preprint copy?

    • Old Man With Candy

Gordie had a GoFundMe to which I contributed. That got me an advance copy.

I hate that Kindle shit, give me a real book.

I hate that Kindle shit, give me a real book.

I don’t get that, since my eyes have crapped out on me real books are harder to read.

I can wear readers but they make me dizzy sometimes.

My kindle can change the size and has a backlight, not to mention the fact it holds a million books.

Also, I did buy the book, it will be delivered to my kindle March 24th.

If I had known about the GoFundMe, I would have contributed, I’m sure it was mentioned here, I must have been busy with work at that time.

I have been crazy busy. I must have missed that GoFundMe too.

Get with the times Old Man. Books are digital and syrah australian these days and you’ll have to take it.

Even with intermodal transport taking over for long haul trucking, there is a need for the last mile transport, which means trucks.

    On truckers:

I’ve been making some decently long drives a couple/three times a year since before Covid. This most recent one I noticed a significant difference in their behavior: they’re speeding again. For a while they stopped speeding (I’m assuming onboard telemetry ratting them out) which meant when one wanted to pass another it would take ten freaking minutes of two lanes blocked.

Not sure what changed exactly, but it’s welcome.

    • UnCivilServant

Growing up, there was a period of time when my dad took a job as a truck driver. I spent a week on a ride along during a school break.

The onboard telemetry most definately ratted out going over 55, regardless of local speed limit. This was the 90s, so I’m not sure what changes have happened since.

What I’ve noticed in recent years is a lower level of paying attention by truck drivers. Nowadays they change lanes blindly a lot more than they used to.

I would bet dollars to doughnuts it’s bc the illegals who can’t speak English are allowed to AND their governors are taken off. I was under the impression that trucking companies were using governors instead of relying solely on telemetry.

Whatever the case, current regulations are not conducive to making a decent living trucking.

I know why the regulations exist, but I also know they throttle commerce and livelihood potential.

        Cue old Linda Ronstadt joke.

    • Gustave Lytton

The speeders are obstructing the roadways here. Using the wrong lanes. Blasting through work zones and other reductions. Obstructing traffic with their snail races. Scales are never open and zero enforcement. “Professional” drivers.

    • Akira

Slim Dusty’s trucker ballads are legendary as well.

I do not care what is going on in your life. “Eastbound and Down” does not fail as a pick-me-up.

    • PieInTheSky

How do you people know this obscure music.

      • Necron 99

Theme song from Smokey and the Bandit – second best film from 1977.

      • Mojeaux

This is NOT obscure in the least bit.

      • PieInTheSky

Well it was certainly not playing in Buzau county in the 90s.

So my own little conservatarianish book tale.

My client is a “compassionate conservative” (I hate that label) who writes political books. The latest one has TRUMP in the title. Amazon let him upload, no problem. But the OTHER (pretty much only) major distributor won’t allow him to because TRUMP.

    • PieInTheSky

Drop the T amd call it Rump

  6. Gender Traitor

What do you mean it’s not the same kind of trucking ? 😕

  7. PieInTheSky

I suppose the european mind cannot comprehend american trucking. all that distance in trucks that are moat likely inferior to european trucks.

    • PieInTheSky

Though the australians take it by measuring distance in beers not miles.

    • Evan from Evansville

      I admire your pro-Romaniam sentiments.

Freight should be hauled on electric trucks no more than 25 feet long. Think of the job creation.

    Negotiating tactic

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), in her capacity as head of the Senate DOGE Caucus, sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) outlining what she says are $93.5 billion in savings that could be incorporated into a filibuster-skirting budget reconciliation bill.

“Republicans should seize every opportunity to advance policies that lower prices, cut taxes, and lift burdensome regulations off the backs of American families while we hold the White House and majorities in both chambers of Congress,” Ernst wrote in the letter, shared first with POLITICO. “This moment will not last forever.”

Her list includes proposals to claw back unspent COVID-era funds; rescind more of former President Joe Biden’s climate initiatives; impose stiffer penalties for states with high rates of inaccurate SNAP food aid payments; implement a new $250 fee for new electric vehicle owners; and create more accountability for government charge cards.

“This is not an exhaustive list, and I stand ready to help you pass another transformational reconciliation bill,” Ernst said.

The DOGE Caucus, created to mirror the work of the now largely defunct Department of Government Efficiency formerly led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, has little tangible power on Capitol Hill. But Ernst’s appeal signals the extent to which jockeying among Republicans has begun as discussions accelerate around a second megabill — even if there’s scant evidence congressional Republicans can pull one off.

And they all had a good laugh.

For Pie: Prime and I are meeting up shortly for some day-drinking of fine New York beer. Woodburning oven pizza as well. No Romanian wine, alas.
