Final Friday Afternoon Links of April

by | Apr 24, 2026 | Cocktails, Daily Links, I Am Lame | 70 comments

Important house keeping announcement, as it currently stands there is no pending articles waiting to be scheduled. If you want to keep having the same snark, comments, and posting schedule, any assistance would be appreciated.

April comes to an end, the NFL draft continues, and Bananaball returns after the Bananaball Open. It looks like we’re finally past the freezes for the time being, although we’re still going to be dropping into the 40s as the high for a bit. The trees are starting to bud leaves, and the maple seeds are forming on the trees. You care not for this though, so let’s get to the links.

I have opinions on this list (original here), and I’m sure you do too. For the record, I’ve read three of the books.

This is worse than the Star Wars special edition.

Are you sure?

Important analysis of a Japanese research paper.

In case you haven’t been following the news, there’s a split on home distillation.

In beer news, Stone acquired by Duvel (through Firestone Walker), and Evil Genius out of Philly is acquiring what’s left of 21st Amendment.

Let the fighting begin!.

Is this supposed to make me dislike him? I didn’t have an opinion of him, and now I kind of like him.

They were just really confident!

Why do medical costs keep going up?

For the mythical among us.

For the cocktail this week, I’m going with one to honor on old bar that came back briefly before dying again. To have some more fun with it, there are rumors that this drink was invented as a way to get rid of dead stock (consider this a warning before you go buy a bottle of Banana du Bresil, creme de mure, or creme de violette).

The Rum Runner

  • 2 part (1 oz) light rum
  • 2 part (1 oz) navy strength rum
  • 2 part (1 oz) banana liqueur (Banana du Bresil is the recommendation here)
  • 1 part (0.5 oz) blackberry liqueur (creme de mure)
  • 4 part (2 oz) pineapple juice
  • 2 part (1 oz) lime juice
  • 1 part (0.5 oz) grenadine

Yep, there’s a lot going on here. On the plus side, there’s quite a bit of flexibility when it comes to the juice. You can swap out any tropical juice or blend thereof to change the flavor to your liking. To make the drink, everything goes into a shaker with ice, shake until combined, and then pour into a hurricane (or shaker if you don’t have a hurricane) glass filled with crushed ice. To garnish, go with a brandied cherry and a chunk of your tropical fruit (so pineapple juice gets a pineapple wedge).

I hope you find something enjoyable to spend your time doing this weekend.

This is worse than the Star Wars special edition.

Sounds like it might be a bit of a crisis on infinite Earths….. no comic book IP ever tries to reset their multiverse historically… nope, never happens. And never gets undone a while later as writers who grew up on the old stories try to bring them back…. never ever happens.

I’ve depleted my reserves of material outside of the recurring series. There are three vaporware articles in the pipe, but they need more work before I can even put text to page.

    • SDF-7

I wish I had something… but I’ve embraced the suck and just don’t have any ideas I think merit one, sorry.

    • R.J.

I have my article comparing types of government vs rights violated but the chart is in fuzz o vision. Pisses me off

    • Unreconstructed

So…I could still probably write up an article on hybrid rice, but I’ll probably have to vet it with the corporate leaders to ensure it doesn’t spit out IP (unlikely, TBH, since I barely understand some of the mechanics/genetics, but I like my phony baloney job)

  4. SDF-7

    Are you sure?

Speaking of universes to reset…. maybe next time don’t make the writers’ room’s politics much more important than their story crafting abilities? Just sayin’….

(And while I really think the SW:EU went off the rails by the time of the extra-galactic S/M biological freaks (Yuzhan Vong or something?)… it never ceases to amaze me that they didn’t try to tweak at least the beginning of that and bring in some of the characters to draw in the OT fans, the EU fans and set up for their new stories… ah well…)

    • Nephilium

Disney burned that right at the outset when they declared all of the novels, comics, games, and the like non-canon.

      • SDF-7

Yeah… can’t really blame them. For most IPs, books and whatnot are only canon until something on screen (TV / film) cancels it out. So I think folks could have lived if their preferred replacement canon wasn’t such a steaming pile of bantha poodoo.

“Crikey, after twenty years of us screeching about the irredeemable evils of men, it appears that many more women hate men than vice versa? How could this have happened?”

Here I was thinking it would be Sasq

If Mr. Ream undertakes this hobby, he is subject to a felony conviction, $10,000 in fines, and five years in prison. But Mr. Ream respects the law, and even though he believes the prohibition on home distilling is unconstitutional, he has not distilled alcohol and is prepared to obtain all necessary state and federal licenses needed and pay all applicable taxes.

[anti-government extremist voice] You shouldn’t need a license or have to pay taxes to distill alcohol. [/anti-government extremist voice]

    • SDF-7

Look… if you impact interstate commerce just by growing your own wheat for your own cattle…. you know you’re impacting Jack Daniels sales by home distilling.

They have altered the New Deal. Pray they do not alter it farther.

    1) Okay, yeah… that’s rather reddit trollish on its face.

    2) Since when do military leaders need to be liked to be effective anyway? Pretty sure Patton (and Sherman probably) wasn’t a guy I’d want to hang around with… the only criteria is “Can he do the damned job?”

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

When some one charged Gen. Grant, in the President’s hearing, with drinking too much liquor, Mr. Lincoln, recalling Gen. Grant’s successes, said that if he could find out what brand of whisky Grant drank, he would send a barrel of it to all the other commanders.

      • SDF-7

Now I find myself suddenly wanting Jackie Chan to make a Grant biopic.

“The Pentagon confirmed that failed congressional candidate and current undersecretary of the Navy Hung Cao would be replacing John Phelan, who was abruptly fired on Wednesday. It’s an appalling move, given that Cao once made a poor joke about the KKK in an interview with Steve Bannon.”

Appalling. Even though he may be a genius on all things Navy (unconfirmed), he made one tepid joke and thus should be forever barred from making any contribution to the national defense. Also, pretend outrage is getting pretty old.

The sale of my parents’ house just closed and I feel like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Drinks on me for the rest of Happy Hour.

    • Fourscore

I just put a 24 acre piece on the market today. See if there is any interest in my asking price. Property prices are going higher and higher, hope to sell before the crash.

What You Should’ve Read By Age …

I’ve read three on the list. “Nineteen Eighty-Four” (read in high school), “War & Peace” (read in my twenties), and “To Kill a Mockingbird” (read in high school). I haven’t heard of many of the books on the list. I suspect I’m not missing out on anything.

    • Nephilium

Swap out War & Peace for Handmaid’s Tale and you’ve got my list too. I suspect you read the better book.

      • DEG

I have considered reading “The Handmaid’s Tale” just to see if it is the Writer’s Barely Disguised Fetish.

      • SDF-7

Beats milking a minotaur, I suppose.

      • juris imprudent

DEG even if not the author, clearly the readership and cos-players.

    • SDF-7

Hmm… I haven’t indulged in a Russian Lit spree in a while… think my copies of War and Peace and Anna Karenina are still back in California… If I do decide to dive back in, probably would start light with Crime and Punishment though…

Can’t comment on the list as a whole since NYT wants me to login and the archive link is 504’ing me.

      • DEG

I’ve read “Anna Karenina” and “Crime and Punishment”.

        Depressing.

Though, there is a bit of redemption at the end of “Crime and Punishment”.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

      Where’s Atlas Shrugged?

      • DEG

On my list? I never read it. I read Heinlein instead.

      • R.J.

Atlas Shrugged is a brick. I did enjoy it but she has shorter works.

    • juris imprudent

I suppose I am to be impressed both with the works and the people recommending them.

      Too bad, I’m not.

      • R.J.

I am with you on that.

    For the mythical among us.

I would be 100 percent behind buying a really nice third world country outright and moving all the women who believe that they don’t need men and that they should have a society without men so they can form such a society. Even willing to spot them basic infrastructure. Let them put their theories into practice instead of just exploiting all the men they hate to run the world they depend on.

All the women who have enough sanity to realize that half the human race isn’t collectively evil are more than welcome to stay… just want to give the crazies their shot.

    • Sean

They’d be quickly overrun by spiders.

    • Furthest Blue pistoffnick (370HSSV)

Who’s going to open the spaghetti sauce jar?

      • SDF-7

The women who honestly think they’re stronger than men?

        Or the spiders, apparently.

The acquisition of 21st Amendment isn’t the first time Evil Genius has made moves to keep traditional craft beers available. In 2022, the company struck a licensing agreement with Lancaster’s Stoudt’s Brewing Co. — one of Pennsylvania’s first craft breweries – to bring back several of its signature beers at bars in the Philly region after the brand shuttered two years earlier.

    I didn’t know Stoudt’s had shut down.

I’ve had some Evil Genius beers. I thought they were good. Their acquisition of 21st Amendment could be a good thing.

    • Nephilium

Stoudt’s closed a while back. That used to be a common stop on road trips out Philly way.

      • DEG

I feel like I need to put a dunce cap on for not noticing.

    Not a fire sale

Porsche AG has agreed to sell its 45% stake in supercar brand Bugatti Rimac, fully exiting the joint venture that houses the iconic brand.

Porsche and Croatian sports-car maker Rimac Group established Bugatti Rimac in 2021, with Rimac holding a 55% majority stake and Porsche taking the remaining 45%. It will sell its stake to a consortium led by New York-based venture capital firm HOF Capital, with BlueFive Capital as its largest investor.

The deal comes as the automakers face mounting pressure to restructure business portfolios amid slowing growth, rising costs and intensifying margin pressure from tariffs and geopolitical disruption.

I’m sure Bugatti has a bright future, same as Rimac.

The reason I go on about this is because I see what it is doing to young women. It’s making them miserable, angry and nihilistic. I have seen many alarming posts and endless threads made by young women about how much they despise men and how terrified they are around men.

At least the author got in a “Women hardest hit” bit.

    • SDF-7

No problem… we can find them lots of bears to hang out with, right?

      • Gender Traitor

        Not bulls?

      • SDF-7

        Apparently not.

Though the fans of the spicy minotaur farm book might want the bulls… who knows.

Open Enrollment in NH in trouble

More than 20 House Republicans broke with their party and helped Democrats kill an open enrollment bill that would let students attend the New Hampshire public school of their choice.

But supporters of open enrollment say the fight isn’t over, and another bill accomplishing the same goal is headed to the House floor.

The 184 “no” votes included Reps. David Miltz (R-Derry) and Terry Roy (R-Deerfield), both committee chairmen who violated the unspoken—and sporadically enforced—tradition that committee chairs do not break ranks with House leadership. It’s a sign of how heated the opposition had become.

SB 101 would have allowed public school students to attend any public school in the state that had the capacity to accommodate them. Funding would largely come from the state and follow the student. Districts would be able to set their schools’ capacities, and the bill included funding accommodations for students with disabilities.

In today’s Mourning Lynx, I commented about the soldier who was arrested for placing bets on the prediction markets, and how he needed to be elected to Congress before he could get away with that.

Turns out that it’s worse than I imagined.

I have no idea of the veracity of the poster’s claims, but no reason to doubt him either.

When you write the laws it is easy to give yourselves class immunity. Q’elle surprise.

Wait… is that going to be a drink strong enough I’d be willing to submit to sodomy and the lash? What kind of family friendly site is this!

  18. The Late P Brooks

I am pleased to report the only book on that list I have read is 1984.

Also- I was under the impression Handmaid’s Tale was a children’s book.

    The Rum Runner

A place in Islamorada claims that they invented the Rum Runner decades ago.

My college roommate and fraternity brothers would stay at a place in Lower Matecumbe Key back in the day, and trips to the Tiki Bar were a near-nightly occurrence.

Back then it was a roadside dive bar. Now it’s part of an upscale resort. I’m sure it’s an improvement, but I miss the old place and its weird admix of old Conchs, fishermen, drug smugglers, and tourists.

    • Nephilium

There are records of a drink called the Rum Runner existing since the 1930s, but the modern recipe. The hotel claims to have invented it in the 70s, and I would likely credit them with the modern recipe. It’s likely it’s along the lines of the multiple generations of drinks called the Cosmopolitan.

  22. The Late P Brooks

There seem to be a lot of stories popping up about the far-reaching effects of the Oil Crisis.

I wonder how many of the “leave it in the ground” morons have any conception of just how many things are made of petrochemical derivatives.

      • Threedoor

My guess with the baking mats is they are against vegetable oil not rock oil.

Dammit, I missed Pie partying during Stoic! (Oh. “Silencio Serie M 2025 Reserva Roja Magnum” is the name of the cigar and not an additional wine on top of it. Saw the “anyhoo” and had a fun scene in my head, of Pie (as his avatar) unwinding his Friday evening in a classy, white bathroom and tub, tophat most certainly on, gettin’ tipsy in the suds as he smoked his unraveling cigar. (Still a smile on his face. Kinda crucial to the image, that.) Window open, he was kinda chuckling as Europe past by.

Well, I’m not deleting that image, cuz it’s kinda awesome. Anyhoo, that’ll get created with the first stone of *my* evening. First week is done, the last two spent actually scoring the tests. Some fun ones, but those thoughts for later. Time to catch up a bit on the world.

    Thanks for those, Ron.
