I have a good friend who works for Health Canada that I have seen just once since COVID. We were getting together to watch the World Series last year and he agreed to show up. But we all had to sit outside in late October and keep our distance.

I’m all set to go to Syracuse.
It’s funny. I grew up there, but I can’t navigate the city because I didn’t get my license until after I moved out. So my mental map of the town is a bunch of small, disconnected areas that aren’t even correctly positioned relative to one another. I have a much better mental map of towns I spent very litle time in, but did drive.
This month, I will have officially lived in the Albany Metro area for as long as I lived in Syracuse.

Overdependence on technology atrophies the mind.
Back before GPS it really was interesting to encounter people who had a different mental map than you.
When I lived in Tulsa, my Dad made me memorize the streets in order before I was allowed to get my learner’s permit. Tulsa is notoriously regular, so once you know that navigation is simple and pretty much everyone agreed on where things were and which locations were close or distant from each other.
Norman and Bryan/College Station don’t count, they’re too small.
Houston and Austin though, I found I basically had a “mother road” from my house to work (US183), and other locations hung off of that. When talking to people who had a different mother road (like MoPac) we’d have completely different definitions of “short drive” and “too far.”
My mental map of the Albany area is based upon the lines of 9, 87, and 787, and the cross-cuts to switch between them. I understand there are deep neighborhoods in between, but I have little reason to enter those areas. North of Albany, I prefer 9. It may be slower, have more red lights, but you can exit pretty much anywhere.

Here in Cleveland, growing up along the lake meant that we were all taught “The Lake is North.” This has greatly impacted my mental map when I’m somewhere with a large body of water to the east, west, or south.
It also meant that none of us were ever afraid of getting lost. We knew the coastline enough that if you didn’t know where you were, you went north until you got to the lake, then figure out if you needed to go east or west.

Pole barns in loose rocky soil use that method. But you should put gravel on the bottom then put the post in before the concrete for drainage.
Sadly the county inspector, who lives in Washington, not even in the state that employs him has decided that all pole buildings must use concrete. My guess is he has buddies in the pole building business and they want to rebuild shops when they rot out in twenty five years.

My daughter had profile pictures taken at her college and had a piercing in her nose. I suggested she have them redone without the piercing and got an ear full from her. Then she showed the pics to one of her professors and he made the same suggestion for the same reason. She had them redone. I have never officially been told this from my daughter. I only learned it after the fact from my wife. Nose piercings are both a red flag and an IQ test rolled into one. See also “gauges” or whatever they put in the ears.

I haven’t worn my hearing aids for several years, I can still hear sort of OK but women’s (higher pitched) voices are more difficult. I began to have problems with men’s voices on the phone. Accents and talking faster than I can interpret so yesterday I started back to try them out again. I’m going to a high school class meet up today (only 5-6 attendees) so I’ll see how it works. The other guys all have hearing aids, the lone girl doesn’t but needs help interpreting from the boys

“There is no cause for panic here,” says Reeves, who’s been studying the decades-long decline in labor force participation among men. “But I do think we should be alert to signs that the labor market might be moving even more quickly in directions that are leaving too many men behind.”
Reeves notes that for years, the country has embraced policies and programs aimed at getting more women into science, technology, engineering and math, and the share of women in STEM jobs has grown.
“But that didn’t happen by itself. It happened as a result of concerted efforts to break down gender stereotypes,” he says.
Still, gaps remain, and some of those efforts have seen their government funding cut under Trump.
Now Reeves says what’s needed are policies and programs to draw male workers into fields such as nursing, teaching and social work.
“Those are occupations that serve people, and they should look like the people that they serve,” he says. “And it’s good for men because it means they won’t lose out on those jobs if that’s where the growth is coming from.”
