So Fox ran an article talking about 10 snacks from the ’80s and ’90s that people miss and want to come back. Personally, I found the list a little dubious, with the exception of Butterfinger BBs and Doritos Salsa Rio.
You can find the article here.

So what say you, Glibbies? Do you like the list? Is there something missing? Please discuss.

Are these the Jello Pudding Pops that Bill Cosby put the Quaaludes in?
I’m surprised they didn’t mention that the product is probably dead because of him.
Make them sugar free, like Jello pudding I can buy and Iβm in.
I remember they had the sugar free pudding pops back in the day. Mom would buy them occasionally when going on the sugar free diet fad.
Ugh my mom was on a diet Pepsi jag for a few years, back when diet soda meant saccharin and completely undrinkable.
Butterfinger BBs and the Keebler Magic Middles.
Wait – is that snack food or some kink descriptions?
Yes
I don’t remember most of those but speaking of Keebler I do remember a sort-of peanut butter candy-bar shaped cookie that was amazing but is impossible to find in recent decades.
Nutter Butter?
No. Finger-shaped. It had an outer layer of chocolate and a dense peanut butter flavored interior.
Chic oβ Stick?
I love those things.
Little Debbie peanut butter bars?
https://www.littledebbie.com/peanut-butter-crunch-bars
That is closer but not quite. The interior was not “creamy”, more like a Clark bar but less crunchy. And there was no cookie wrapper.
SCREAMING YELLOW ZONKERS!!!
I swear I recently saw Altoids or something similar going with sours. I noted it was the first time I’ve seen ’em, so it was a recognizable brand, though I don’t remember which one.
Nutty Buttys are still a fun, nostalgic throwback. (They are much bigger than they used to be.) Planters Cheezballs? I wanna see Reese’s take on ’em. Don’t really need to, cuz their puffs are just bigger versions of the same fantastitude. Zebra Cakes were an elem. school go-to. (They don’t hold up.)
The new sour Skittles (not the gummies) are divine. I need to pick up a new “Shareable” sack for myself tomorrow. They’re the bestest.
I was just struck by the stock footage of a strip mall-ish type area. You know, where the lower classes hang our, not the sophisticates like ourselves. The paucity of obesity is striking for a location like that.
I was always partial to Charleston Chews in my youth, but a quick DDG indicates they are still being made, so they don’t fit the theme.
I saw Charleston Chews advertising on the bags and in stores to make s’mores with Graham crackers and two mini Charleston Chews. If someone handed me that and called it a s’more, I would call bullshit.
I remember those. I think I lost a filling to one.
I’ve been an absolute fiend for Tim’s Cascade jalapeno chips ever since I won a “how many can you eat” contest at summer camp when I was a kid (tell me your church was 99% white without actually telling me…). Haven’t had them in years. Not available in this area. All the other kettle chip brands with a jalapeno flavor wimp out on the spice.
I liked Cheetos Paws when I was a kid. Sour Altoids sucked. I don’t think I ever sampled any of the other brands mentioned.
I was going to mention Surge and Sierra Mist from Coca Cola and Pepsico, respectively, in the late ’90s, but apparently Surge was reintroduced, and Sierra Mist was only discontinued in 2023 – I thought it had disappeared at least a decade earlier than that.
Jolt Cola or GTFO.
From my home town. Is it still around? I haven’t seen it in ages.
Sort of but not really looks like, they sell some kind of Jolt Cola thingy on Amazon but itβs a kind of energy drink.
I saw a can of Dr. Jolt in a customer’s car last week. Fake ass Dr. Pepper.
I remember almost none of those. No nostalgia.
I’ll sit between UCS and Kinnath.
My kids wouldn’t even remember them
Most I don’t recognize.
Likewise.
I remember the PB Crisps. Those were pretty good, but the Trader Joe’s filled Bombas are better. Didn’t really think about them after I stopped seeing them on the shelves. I didn’t know the rest had been discontinued.
Breyer’s used to make quart (?) tubs of coffee and fudge ice cream that was sinfully good. Among other flavor combos. Haven’t seen that since high school.
Let a carton of Bryerβs thaw in the sink and youβll never long for it again. Looks like ice cream, tastes like ice cream, not ice cream though.
I have no idea what that implies.
Chemicals that donβt belong there.
It melts into a kind of foam thatβll maintain (sort of) the shape of the carton if you dump it out. Iβll still eat the mint chocolate chip from time to time because I canβt argue with the taste but itβs the only ice cream Iβve ever seen do that.
The whole point of Breyer’s in my memory from the 80s was none of that shit. Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
vanilla ice cream ingredients from the Breyer’s website:
milk
cream
sugar
skim milk
tara gum
natural flavor
This is what you are complaining about:
Tara gum (E 417) is a natural, high-viscosity polysaccharide derived from the ground endosperm of Caesalpinia spinosa seeds, native to the Andes region of Peru. It is primarily used as a thickener, stabilizer, and gelling agent in food products like ice cream, dairy, sauces, and bakery items, where it imparts a creamy mouthfeel and improves texture without altering flavor.
Yeah whatever that is wasn’t present back in the day.
We had some generically packaged substance called ice cream sold in the commissaries in Europe in the ’60s. I think it was frozen soybean oil.
If it was left out in a bowl in the sink it was tough to get it to go down the drain.
In Spain we got a product called milk in a 8-10 quart box with a spigot. Took some getting used to but after a couple weeks we were accustomed to it. On our return to the US I drank whole milk like an addict. It was good.
Gums and carrageenan
You stupid briar.
/winks @ GT
I fell in love with these in Germany in the 80s – by far their best product. I saw them in one or two bodegas in the NYC area ages ago but nowhere recently – it’s the usual gummy bears and snakes and cola bottles if anything.
I have ordered them via Amazon a few times.
They carry those in the Dollar Trees around here. Solid productβ¦
Maybe I’ll check the Dollar Tree or WalMart nearby. I made my first visit to a WalMart a couple weeks ago – it’s not as convenient as the Wegmans and the selection kind of sucked and JFC the People of WalMart meme is true.
Wait ’til summer come, Rhy, the people of (any) Walmart will put on a daily show that will scare the bejesus out of you.
It’s not a meme if its true and accurate.
HARIBO!! My wife, who also lived in Germany loves those, and buys them still.
It has to be that specific construct though. They have a waxy exterior protecting the gummi inside… yum.
Got made in deutchland Haribos with my last tool order before the Trump Tariffs. Now CBP is seizing all imported foods that don’t have FDA pre approval. All the Haribo here is made TukyeΓ«αΊ½ΓͺΔΔΔΓ©.
My son brings German made Haribos when he comes out to visit. The green ones are a entirely different shade.
Doritos protip- turn the bag upside down, shake it, then open from the bottom.
That way you get all the flavor dusts that usually hides in the bottom. I learned it from a colored person, so you know it works.
Also- avoid Cheetoh Fingers
Noted for future use.
Doritos went to crap about a decade ago.
Donβt know what they did to them but Iβm guessing even lower fat and more seed oils than they were in the early 2000s.
Care less about any on the list but would like the original recipe Butterfinger before the Eyetalian Candy company “improved” after buying from nestle. Other than that, I mostly miss the packaging. Foil wrapped hersheys or Kit Kats with paper wrapped around it. Or M&Ms in a tearable paper wrapper. Tired ofplasticized everything. Sugar Pops in foil bag, dammit.
I miss non-food items with cardboard backing and peelable plastic container glued to the cardboard. Fucking unopenable frustration packaging.
I saw some fool-proof way to defeat those fucking clamshell hand-slicers a few years ago but I forgot what it was. Maybe involving a can-opener…?
Ding Dongs and Ho Ho’s must be foil wrapped and not this plastic imposter of a wrap.
Yes!
I havenβt seen a Rolo or a Score bar in over a year.
They still make one of my historical favorites (Chunky) as a square candy bar. But now it’s done by Nestle and only has one variant, that being milk chocolate, raisins and peanuts. Used to be 3 or maybe 4 versions, with different types of nuts and one that was made with dark chocolate.
Rondos. Frozen ice cream balls.
That and a takeout pizza where my dinner for my ex-wife’s and my prom dinner (to my defense, I had no money, but I did have a tuxedo).
Perhap a portent to come.
I’m not sure if it makes me bougie or poor that I didn’t eat, and thus do I not miss, any of that.
I was too poor to eat stuff like that at one point then, later, I wouldn’t choose to eat it.
Ha I probably ate more richly in the 80s than the 90s when I was poor as dirt during and after college.
Damn your confusing privilege.
I don’t remember much of any junk food from childhood, we weren’t allowed to eat that stuff.
I DO remember the Government cheese, and I don’t miss that shit at all.
I am with Aloysious — though we were allowed to snack on some junk food; these are just obscure at least for my childhood.
McDonaldβs apple pies fried in beef suet. I remember.
Doritos that were not low fat and didnβt suck.
Oreos with lard and not cotton seed oil. Like eating candles since the early 90s.
Suet or tallow? Actually. Garble, garble, I agree otherwise.
Late 90s Walmart had these Mint Fudge Cups that were banging.
I also miss SoBe.
You know…I have been in that position before. Thinking you are making a profound connection and smarmy comment but once you hit send and you realize — Fuck, that was dumb.
Wow. That is… something.
The amount of wishing America loses/hope that pilots become POWs is fucking goddamn insane. TDS has fucked up a way too large part of the population.
Dovetails nicely with self loathing of their own country.
#amerikkka
Idiots, all of them.
Dovetails nicely with self loathing of their own country.
Fenix Ammunition loves America but hates the government.
If you want actual TDS, here you go.
I can’t find licorice nibs these days. And Twizzlers (red and black) are nowhere near as tasty as they used to be. Or maybe one’s taste buds just change as the years roll on?
Once you have had black (coffee) you can never go back.
Good black coffee.
Lane splitters are psychopaths.
https://www.reddit.com/r/dashcams/comments/1sfj6sn/motorcycle_accident_san_diego_i5_south_april_7/
Fortunately, or unfortunately, the meat crayon didn’t smear himself into the next world.
Still amazed thatβs legal in Cali, itβs just a matter of time before a car changes lanes after not seeing you coming and punches your ticket. I see how it could be beneficial in bumper to bumper traffic though.
That is why “filtering”, as the Brits call it, is good and should be legal. Driving like an ass, as in the vid, is still illegal. And people would do it anyway, just like they speed, drive drunk, pass blindly, and so on.
The solution isn’t to make things illegal, but to teach better driving/riding.
I remember none of those.
However, Iβve solved for Girl Scouts Thin Mints: Keebler Grasshoppers.
Dollar General, at least around here, has these.

I do not find this post to be inclusive.
There was a frozen burrito brand that had a chili dog burrito; match made in heaven. The original Snapple Fire, with real Dragon Fruit juice, they brought it back but now it’s a peach juice mixture meant to mimic Dragon Fruit; and https://youtu.be/YC4ioMUORCQ?si=3F2Ih1QuUcNxjyz-
Since somebody mentioned McDonald’s apple pies above, I came across a commercial for something in the late 1970s called Appleasy which sounds horrible.
And in the sidebar was a commercial for Sizzlean.
Wakey, wakey folks!

Good morning, Sean and Ted’S.!
Good morning, Ninja Cat!
As a matter of fact, he’s right here in my lap.
How are you today?

Good morning, U! How are YOU today?
After our illuminating conversation, I slept through the night (π₯³), was a bit behind schedule getting moving, but got back on track by skipping the early morning Glib visit to get on the road. Made it to the office and have been reading email while having breakfast.
Just mild Italian sausage, and just for me: Dad finds such food too spicy in his old age. No meatballs either.
Finds what too spicy, the fennel?
Everything, it seems. He claims he can taste a difference between store-brand sauce and Ragu.
No breading or marinating chicken, either.
He makes you look daring in terms of seasonings any more, UCS.
I do find that slander tiresome.
*UCS pulls on his offended gloves*
I do find that slander tiresome.
Is that why you consistently comment on getting lousy sleep? :-p

At least I don’t see that they’re actually betting on the wrestling matches. Yet.

Good morning, DEG! How’s it going?
The interviews I’ve had have gone nowhere, which is OK because I’m enjoying unemployment too much. I’ve been sleeping nine hours a night, going to the gym whenever I want, going for walks around the neighborhood, watching youtube videos, and reading. But, I have started ramping up house projects.
And how are you doing?
I didn’t realize you had become unemployed when did that happen?
Also – Now I’ve got this stuck in my head
I’m doing okay, other than being tired of the recurring cold weather. Eager to set up my futon chaise out at Tranquility Base.
UCS, The company is consolidating operations for the product I worked on at certain facilities. I’m not going to publicly say what I think is actually going on with the product. They gave me an opportunity to move to California to stay employed or to interview with certain other groups to stay employed. I said no to move to California. I interviewed with other groups in the company but those went nowhere. I still have opportunities to interview with other groups inside the company that laid me off, but I think at this time I’ll exclusively interview with other companies.
recurring cold weather.
We had snow yesterday. Some of it stuck. I had swapped the winter and summer tires on my daily driver. With the roads wet and the air temps around freezing, I took another car with all-seasons. I did not want to drive my daily driver with its summer tires in those conditions.

I think you made the right choice. Good luck in your search.
Good luck in your search
Thanks!
Good luck, DEG. My wife is in a similar situation, being that the university is dead broke and is eliminating her position. So she has been home for the last month and a half, while they (the broke ones) keep paying her. She had a good phone screening yesterday with XXX company, and they have already tapped her for an interview tomorrow, so things are moving along.
And in the meantime, I get to eat homemade bread.
I assume “XXX company” is not a euphemism for OnlyFans….
Hola.
Since WW3 hasn’t started the market futures are screaming. I expect energy will be down.
I don’t have any direct investments in Energy. My stocks are in entertainment (CDPR, GW), Food and Drink (PepsiCo), and some funds (Gold Mining companies, S&P Index).
I hop at least the S&P Index goes up, it’s my biggest dollar investment and it’s down from when I last put money in.
A low expense S&P500 fund is a fine investment vehicle for anyone with a longer time horizon.
SP future is up 2.75% this AM, but the index will likely still be flat or slightly down YTD. I think last year it was up 16+%.
So far I have not sold anything I’ve invested in. I’m just a bit miffed that as soon as I put a decent chunk of change into the S&P Index, it began a dip.
I know eventually it will turn around, and always planned on waiting, but it does make me go π

Kettle Cookies.
Way back in childhood, like the late ’70s and maybe early ’80s, there was a cookies assortment that came in a red/pink package maybe 10″ long and 4″ wide. It had a plastic tray in it with a few of several kinds of cookies (Oreos, Lorna Doones, maybe Nutter Butters, some shortbreads, etc.). Well one of the things in there was called a Kettle Cookie. It was like an extra-dense shortbread, about 1.375″ square, and had a hearth-with-kettle scene embossed on the face.
Those were the best. Never saw them sold separately. Those packs still exist but sans Kettles.
