Pre-Father’s Day Friday Afternoon Links

by | Jun 19, 2026 | Cocktails, Daily Links, I Am Lame | 50 comments

We’re back with another Friday, so let’s get you going with some links.

It’s the end of an era. [obligatory]

I blame the HOA.

*blink* *blink* You Sure About That? You SURE About That?

You Sure About That? YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?

Since I’m not from Texas, absolutely nothing.

England is a failed state.

Related: I fear we’re running out of boxes too.

I blame Beefaroni.

I remember Vikings and Browns fans drinking a London stadium dry.

People being proud of their heritage? HOW DARE THEY!

[This link intentionally left blank]

They’ll make it up in volume!

What’s beyond gaslighting?

Florida Man?

I am interested.

As it’s summer, let’s go with a tropical drink for the weekend:

Jungle Bird

  • 6 parts (1.5 oz) rum (blackstrap is traditional, but any will work)
  • 3 parts (0.75 oz) Campari
  • 6 parts (1.5 oz) pineapple juice
  • 2 parts (0.5 oz) lime juice
  • 2 parts (0.5 oz) simple syrup (demerara is the traditional one here, but this can be adjusted as well)

This is a drink that can be easy to get out of balance, so be careful with your measurements and adjust the volumes to your taste. Everything goes into a shaker with ice, shake until chilled and combined, and strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge if you would like.

With that, I hope you enjoy the weekend, and get what you need.

New research from the Partnership for Public Service found that close to two-thirds, or 65%, of Americans believe civil servants are competent, up from 57% last year. And about 61% of Americans now agree that civil servants are “committed to helping people like me,” an increase of five percentage points since last year’s findings.

It’s *possible* that since some 300,000 positions have been eliminated, the deadweight is gone and the bureaucrats who are left are actually committed to assisting the public. But since the “study” was done by an advocacy group, I’m guessing the whole thing is nonsense.

Research from the Partnership for Public Service, an organization that advocates for government improvements, shows positive views of civil servants have risen each year for the last several years. The polling results marked the highest positive responses since the nonprofit started measuring public views of civil servants in 2021. Since then, public agreement that civil servants are committed workers has increased by 15 percentage points.

    Inarguable.

    • creech

So this means OMB is improving the performance of civil servants? Somehow I doubt they will give him any credit.

Part of the appeal of the term lies in its ability to create community. Mixed-race people often feel they must choose one side, or be excluded from both.

Tiger Woods has entered the chat… though “Cablinasian” doesn’t roll off the tongue nearly as easily as “Wasian.”

    “What’s beyond gaslighting?”

Glad you picked up that link.

Time to change the locks and throw their belongings out into the front yard.

Or marry the kid off and start a multi-generational household.

Hey hey! I resemble that supposed ‘trend!’ (‘Cept I’m older.)

I made a few Jungle Birds last week. They are GOOD! Stop at the store on the way home today and get the ingredients, you won’t be disappointed (but you probably will be drunk.)

It’s been made clear time and again that only the Left is allowed to protest.

Only those with exclusive access to the truth can speak truth to power. That’s just how it is.

The coronavirus vaccine reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events linked to covid-19

Excuse me while I get my chest waders out of the closet.

    • juris imprudent

That’s because the vaccine took over as the cause of cardiovascular issues. You didn’t have to worry about the virus itself.

The local authority said the flags were causing ‘fear and division’ among residents

As clear an indicator as can be of who really holds the power in that sad place.

    • creech

These are the folks whose parents and grandparents were willing to fight on the beaches, landing grounds, etc. and never surrender?

  9. rhywun

It seems for the Right’s radicals, they’ve decided to show the state they actually do have power and are willing to use it.

Not surprising. The Left has been operating similarly for decades, and getting away with it. Why should they have all the fun?

Mixed-race Asians can find themselves in a paradoxical position; too Asian to be fully accepted as white, yet insufficiently Asian to be recognised as “properly” Asian.

And again I am reminded of a past in which the ultimate blending of races and cultures into one big wonderful egalitarian mongrel melange was looked upon as a desirable outcome. I wonder what happened to that.

I may have made a shop Lego order this morning to get the gift with purchase. My wife will find out in about four days.

For some, it’s about celebrating a chameleon-like ability to adapt and bring the “best of both worlds” to the table.

Nice scare quotes. As if there could be such a thing.

Things will get spicy in the UK and Ireland. They’ve been betrayed by their political class.

Neocons kept insisting a little push would topple the Iranian government (they were wrong). But it wouldn’t take much to push over a bunch of European states.

    • juris imprudent

They’ve been betrayed by their political class.

Eh, is there any country where that isn’t true?

      • Drake

        Not in the West.

      • EvilSheldon

It hits harder in the West because we were taught all that bullshit about, “Government of the people…”

  14. juris imprudent

I’ll take the win, but I want to hang the entire refereeing contingent this World Cup. They are almost uniformly horrible.

  15. The Late P Brooks

The current “Wasian” discussion presents an opportunity to shake up conversations about race and identity. If we’re interested in disrupting the status quo, it’s important to think carefully about how the discourse fits with broader systems that perpetuate racism and celebrate whiteness.

It must be awfully hot and dank and smelly when your head is so far up your own ass.

  16. The Late P Brooks

They’ve been betrayed by their political class.

That’s what they get for political daddy-worship. Just like that dopey Newsom bint.

The victim in the indecent assault conviction, however, was a social acquaintance of Mr. Stronach who testified that she went to his apartment after a dinner in 1977 when she was 25.

Well, I got to participate in a Juneteenth play today. Our Color Guard depicted the Union forces entering Galveston, TX.
Anyway, near the end of the play, a character is going on and on about the great African Americans who will come along in our history. Usual list, usual shout out to their “character not their color.” But I was in danger or losing my pizza lunch when the last called out were “Barack and Michelle Obama” and the audience erupted in loud and prolonged cheers. Skin color trumps all!

    Non pay.

    Pay

Naturally pay is better. Cop double tapped too.

The death of Jameson has sparked outrage and questions across the city, prompting Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell to promise a full investigation and Mayor Karen Bass to offer a public tribute to the dog.

They got $188k gofundme plus the inevitable lawsuit.

    Put it on my tab

We’ve heard that the world’s wealthiest 10 percent are disproportionately responsible for environmental damage.

Now, scientists have estimated just how much, in cold hard cash, those damages are worth.

It’s difficult to put a price on the environment, and some scientists even argue it’s beside the point: that nature has intrinsic value, beyond the services it provides to us.

But in some situations, it helps to try to put it in economic terms: especially when those are the terms the world’s wealthiest are used to dealing in.

That’s what environmental scientists Inge Schrijver, Rutger Hoekstra, and Paul Behrens, all from Leiden University in the Netherlands, have done.

The world’s top 10 percent of consumers, they calculate, owe society trillions for their environmental impact.

“According to my model,” says Environmentalist Barbie.

  22. The Late P Brooks

In other words, environmental taxes targeted at this group could help pay for the large-scale transitions needed to keep our societies safe from environmental collapse, and improve the lives of lower-income households in the process.

Kill the rich and steal their stuff. It’s the only way to save the planet.

Animal rights activists have long said the carriage horses are overworked, can get easily spooked on city streets and live in inadequate stables while their drivers regularly flout city rules. All of those allegations have been denied by the horse and carriage owners, who say the animals are well cared for and the stables are fine.

I think I know whom I believe here. If any of what the “activists” claim were true, the horses would have been packed off to the glue factory decades ago.
