Genre – Sci Fi Anime
Movie Total Runtime – 18 Hour 1 Minutes
Spoilers – Yes
The second half of Season 1 opens with a change in the credits music. I don’t like it. I can’t understand the lyrics, but the first theme had a nice upbeat, high energy sound. This one mellowed out a lot, and just doesn’t sound as good. The episodic plot comes back to the baseball kid with a sports tournament plot where the protagonists are pitted against the school’s official team with the expectation of humiliation. Principal Antagonist matches wits against Koro-sensei’s strategies. It’s more of a character episode for the baseball kid. It closes out with a downright soporific new closing credits theme. I do guess I’m skipping the credits at least until season two now.
In an attempted draft of this paragraph, I caught myself describing one of the episodes as ‘filler’, but that’s not correct. Filler can be discarded from a series without losing anything. The problem was since I’d taken a break after the first half of season 1, my brain reset to the elevator pitch premise. Viewing the series as “ensemble tries to kill koro-sensei” misses the point. While you could try to build a forty-seven episode series on that, it’d be much darker than the tone the show aims for. It’s not about killing Koro-sensei, it’s about the ensemble of misfits. Which is why each plot shuffles between which set of characters are in the fore. Since the stories are about these oddball individuals, the comedic elements fit more naturally. It can be quite deadpan, but I have broken out in full-blown laughter at the most flat delivery landing at the perfect time. It is not entirely a comedy, switching to full serious when the plot demands.
The finals arrived in Episode 16 of season one. Which confuses me with regards to the end of the world deadline. Admittedly, I know nothing about the Japanese academic year. And I still have a “No research” policy for these reviews. I’ll have to see if the show exposits on the timeline more. They do put a lot of effort into making taking examinations appear tense and exciting for the spectator. The lack of understanding of how things work in that system means I couldn’t unravel the results of the bet between the misfits and “A” class. The background scenes imply there is more to Principal Antagonist’s motivations in crushing the “E” class, but details are not forthcoming.
I do learn two things in episode 17. A: There is a Summer Vacation in this educational system, and B: the deadline was not the end of the academic year. The summer vacation arc returns to the main premise of the class trying to kill Koro-Sensei. Opportunistic outside assassins do jump in to exploit the situation after the students launch their plan. So the plot switches to dealing with the rival assassins who began targeting the students. Infiltrating a resort against human opponents is a significant change of pace from both the academic side stories and the main premise. As the whole arc’s theme is about autonomy by the students in expressing their educational attainment, something had to be done to remove the superpowered being in the room. Enter New Powers as the Plot Requires. Something I particularly hate. Anyway, what happened was that the students assassination plan for Koro-Sensei was supposedly so well executed that he had to enter his “ultimate defensive mode” which is smaller, portable, indestructible, and immobile. He can’t voluntarily leave it, so he’s removed from the plot for twenty four hours. All to avoid an attack he looked like he could have ducked.
But the plot demands it. Among the human bad guys we have the poisoner who incapacitates a chunk of the students and their adult supervision, forcing further autonomy. We have the head honcho, who remains in shadow much of the time, and the psycho henchman. Psycho henchman is introduced using his revolver to eat ramen. Immediately the scene makes me batty. One, you have a supposedly knowledgeable assassin asking about whether the safety is on. We get lovingly drawn closeups of this revolver, and it is a normal design, meaning it has no safety. Two, psycho henchman keeps his finger on the trigger at all times. Three psycho henchman puts the muzzle in his own mouth repeatedly. Supposedly he’s using it to transfer the broth, but that is physically impossible, the cylinder gap means the barrel is an open tube at both ends. You’re not holding ramen broth in that.
Moving through the resort and dealing with various henchpeople introduced or newly deployed invokes a lot of Anime tropes, and it gave me nostalgia vibes for stuff I watched in college. In college, however, it was pirated fansubs due to a lack of North American distribution. It was annoying to get my hands on legal copies, and I haven’t found some even to this day. PS, screw Crunchyroll.
This does burn through episodes so that we don’t end up tripping over the deadline for the end of the world. I’m trying to stretch out the commentary, but without a plot synopsis of what amounts to a boss rush as they move in towards the main bad guy. Surprisingly, the season one end bad guy’s plan for dealing with Koro-Sensei’s Ultimate Defensive Form was pretty much my plan, only slightly more extreme. I won’t spoil it.
It turns out his motives were not so straightforward as simply taking the bounty on Koro-Sensei. But really, that just makes for a better villain. The writers did manage to set up a one on one fight for the season climax with most of the ensemble left as commentators. Season One wraps up with the main deadline still looming, but enough of a resolution for what it is.

So who won the tournament??
The misfits, of course.
It is fiction, after all.

I don’t know if many of you have heard of him, but I have. He had some catchy tunes.
Never heard of him.
Yikes 😳
RIP
Well that’s confusing: then collided in mid-air THEN crashed into each other?
Terrible and too young regardless of who he was.
OT: Pakistan Prime Minister says a deal has been reached
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Sunday that “the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED.”
“Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” Sharif said in a post on social media Sunday evening.
“The official signing ceremony will be on Friday, 19 June in Switzerland,” the prime minister added, thanking Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for their help in the “mediation effort.”
Aaaand – it’s been broken.
And what front would that be in Lebanon? So they’re opening admitting Hezbollah is Iranian controlled now?
What is the Orange Turd going to do now to stroke his ego after this humiliation of his nonsense? Maybe put a stripper pole in the new ballroom?
This, combined with the UFC outside his bedroom? That’s the presidential fantasy version of Costanza’s sex + food in bed. And if Melania still pretends to sleep in the same bed as him? BIG plus. The biggest.
I’ll give him this, he’s had an extraordinary life. He was great in Home Alone 2! (I do admire his persistence with the character, even if I don’t always love it. (Sometimes, like in his mug shot? *chef’s kiss*))
Stripper poles in Havana ballrooms.
There is no chance the ceasefire holds in Lebanon holds unless Iran reins in Hezbollah. And to answer your question, yes Iran has admitted they control Hezbollah.
Amazing,
Are the kids so cog-like they don’t matter yet? I guess I know one kid plays baseball. Are any of them … good at what they do? (Are any of ’em hot is an obvious question, as well.) What are their special powers /abilities? Seems Baseball Boy is the most ‘unique.’ I guess the ones culled didn’t matter much, hence, their culling.
Hrm. I liked Dragonball Z, through the Frieza era, then I got to high school. (Vegeta’s my favorite.)
Dude – these are middle-schoolers.
The problem with the kids is not the lack of distinction, but two facts A: I am terrible with Japanese names. B: There are so many that just trying to recap them would run so long the article would be unreadable.
Ya see, I thought they were high school /early college. They’re still cartoons I haven’t seen. *searches .. flips hands up* Ya see! Brunette, ponytail, red scrunchy? (Oh. Green kooky hair and the blonde, too.)
The “they are so many” confirms my initial “cog” hypothesis.
Youre free to stay wrong.
The Japanese are strange. Comes from living by themselves on those tiny islands.
For 10 maybe 15 minutes as Japan was looking for an equalizer against the Netherlands, the announcer kept going on that sending in crosses wouldn’t work because of the Dutch height advantage. Then Japan scored a header off a corner. The announcer comes back with “I must apologize to every member of the Japanese team”.
That turned out to be a good game and I was pleased with the result.
I admire his humility.
What a crazy 15 hours. We had just gone with Papa (Mrs OBE’s dad) to breakfast in the AM yesterday to meet somr friends of ours. He spat facts on NASCAR car #s and thier drivers to our friends young child.
He gave us some red beans to take home he was making for dinner and reminded us at 3pm ‘make sure you add some sweet peppers’ while we gleefully were rowing on the lake.
Those who’ve seen Mrs OBE on zooms, just make it a man and that was her dad.
My loss of my dad…sucked. my wife losing her dad has floored me. No more stories on why a big rig has double exhaust stacks or how a church on a lonely road was built and he remembers when it was being built.
This place…is such a rock and I appreciate it
My condolences.
Thanks DEG.

Oooh, that’s a lovely picture. That’s a great one to make ya smile further along the road.
Great picture
So sad, OBE, if I could sit across the table from you.
It might make you laugh and cheer you a bit. No one can replace those you love
I think I have only caught you on the zooms twice.
My condolences.
Thanks. You’d remember the force of Mrs OBE…but that was…god…5-6 years ago.
He would have been a great blast on the zooms.
Sorry man.
So sorry to hear that.
I’m very sorry.
And that is a great picture. I see so much love.
I’m sorry for your and the Mrs’s loss.
So sorry to hear, OBE. Condolences to you and your better half.
Deepest condolences.
I rate this 10 racisms out of 10 possible racisms. And it’s funny and accurate as fuck.
Must have been a Knicks fan.
This reminds me, has anyone got any news on Suthenboy? He’s been MIA for quite a while now.
Someone was going to check on him.
HA! Though, I’d agree with Sowell, that white folx’ interference post integration served to keep black folk down and reliable. ‘Graduating’ illiterates and paying per b̵a̵b̵y̵ vote. Generations in, and we’ve got a big, fatherless problem. Clearest example of the State is your ‘family.’ (Other than the factory mom, that is. Don’t fret, she getting a cut.)
the aircrafts collided mid-air before crashing into each other. Per CBC, the helicopters then crashed atop a car dealership with electric vehicles, with CNN reporting that approximately 20 vehicles were hit and caught fire
Going out in style.
Seems like that beats Randy Rhoads’ previous crazy musician plane crash record.
That kind of action sequence would be ridiculous if I saw it in a film.
I’m betting there will be a dash cam or a security cam video of it.
I attended a couple ticker tape parades when I was working on Broadway, one each for the Rangers and Giants IIRC. The sentiment is probably correct – a good time was had by all. But that was 20 years ago so who the hell knows anymore.
Geez, thete are so many whose whole lives seem to be consumed by fanaticism for guys who play ball in a uniform with your geographic location on it.
Circuses.
A fun diversion from the daily grind – I support it.
Celebratory rioting brings us together as a civil society.
That kind of action sequence would be ridiculous if I saw it in a film.
Needs more school bus full of nuns.
I’m Sure there is a film about Brazilian nuns somewhere.
Would we like some T&A? Why yes, yes we would.

Nice. Like a Glib Fit throwback.

Yay!

Serious news for a serious world.

PS. this World Cup is teaching me to hate the dumbass “posing” by every player pre-match more than usual.
Any talent you’re eyeing? Noticed some MLB facial hair that made me think of you. Pretty much a (my) age-old question, cuz I can’t grow one (though what does is black black), I don’t understand them in many ways. I get the look. Don’t understand the ‘touch’ attraction. Hrm.
I’m afraid I have no idea what you’re asking there.
How’s the flopping?
Don’t worry, it was a strange thought. I can’t imagine kissing the bearded. They look great, depending. My brain went to blank-land and I spent too much time thinking about it, then realized I was trying to pinpoint a cloud with a needle.
Paraguayan player got a yellow card for a flop, which was nice.
The new “mistaken identity” rule is pretty interesting – if review shows a flop it’s not just that the initial penalty is waived off but the flopper gets an equivalent penalty.
In this case, the US player initially got a yellow, review shows it was a flop, so the yellow goes the other way.
NBA could use that.

Lol
I remember watching Cher on TV writhing on the 16” guns.
I was embarrassed as a child for watching that.
I enjoy watching it now for how over the top it is. And that the Navy would green light the entire thing. Good lord, what the hell were they smoking?
Happy Army Birthday, to those who celebrate!
I did not know.
I don’t think it was ever celebrated or mentioned when I was in.
It’s certainly not as gay as the marine Corp birthday.
“Let no man cry out in their hour of need, if only I had been trained”
Flag Day always overshadowed it. History and heritage only seemed to matter for boards and dining in.
Never made it to a board.
When I wasent on profile I was too white to go.
Me neither. Not disappointed either.
I’ll just leave this here:

Monday is my Friday.
And I had the weekend off.
Good morning, Sean, Ted’S., U, and Derpy!
Morning, GT.
Morning, 😺.
Morning, 🐱👤.
Morning, 🎸.
How goes things?
Pretty well, thank! It’s a short work week, and I found my way clear to take the following week off. How are you?
(ThankS, that is! Certainly deserving of more than one thank!)
Fingers crossed that I’m in the home stretch of fixing my sleep schedule. But I’ve also been particularly cranky of late.
On the less significant side of problems, the store was out of diet dew, and diet coke, leaving the optiosn of either “zero” or diet pepsi. Since diet pepsi is undrinkable, I risked a ‘zero’. They taste awful – too syrupy.
I hope getting your sleep back on track helps you feel better. 🙂
Fuck Juneteenth as a government holiday.
Let people commemorate like Flag Day, but don’t close shit down.
Did you have business you wanted to do with a government office this Friday?

11 skydivers and one pilot. Sad.
I like not this news, bring me different news.
I’ve concluded that we focus too much on negativity.
I want good news and positivity, and not the glurge-y crap Jimbo mislabels as sunshine.

I am a collector. I do not plan to sell.
I still have to print a new iteration of grip. I’m waiting on the new multi-material print module so I can do it right.

It sounds to me like the district has an obesity problem, and he was concerned about their medical coverage.
If you’re a public official on a live mic keep the fatty slagging between your ears I guess.
Something along the lines of “Nice ass!”?
Mark Twain said something like: First god made idiots; that was for practice. Then he made school boards.
I guess he could have said “he comes tons-of-fun.”
Naggers?
I went to see Disclosure Day with my mom yesterday. She wore her Roswell alien shirt. I thought the movie was meh and an hour too long, though I did enjoy the part where the North Korean soldiers were all looking at their smartphones, as if that bears any semblance to reality.
Anyway, she wanted to get fried chicken after. Her latest checkup noted impaired kidney function. She doesn’t need dialysis yet, but she’s heading that way. I did my best to diplomatically suggest that high salt foods may not be the best choice. She said she wouldn’t eat the skin. I don’t blame her for having a “smoke ’em if ya got ’em attitude”. Her mom did and she smoked like a chimney and drank like a fish until nature took its course when she was 73. Her husband, my maternal grandpa, made it to 96 after he quit smoking his beloved pipe 20 years prior. My mom will probably outlast her mom, but maybe not by much, which is odd given all the fretting she’s done about her health.
My mom drank Diet Coke daily for about 40 years. It’s high in phosphorus which is bad for kidneys. I thought people should know that.
GOOOOOOODD MORNINGGGGGGG!!! GLIBASTAAAANians
And fine morning it is. 42 to start the day and 76 later this afternoon. Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with that.
🥵
Too hot later on.
Good morning, 4(20)!
In Sweden they say there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
That’s perfect weather.
Bee inspection Saturday. All 4 hives looks good. Every year we start optimistically only to sometimes see a little disappointment at HH.
Bees are busy but we could use a little more rain and a few more flowers.
Now I have this mental image of the bees standing in neat ordered formation while Fourscore looks for problems with their uniforms.
Someone want to tell me what this is supposed to mean?

https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/nyc-lawmakers-consider-making-mamdanis-city-owned-grocery-stores-permanent
Ultimately, it’ll be a cluster of six figure do-nothing jobs minding empty shelves in shitty neighborhoods.
A permanent money suck on the municipal coffers.
So, opportunities for those experienced in feeding the children.
I mean, if you can make $40/hr slinging nachos at a stadium, surely a grocery store cashier should make at least as much.
$40/hr? That’s only $83k/yr without overtime. You can’t live in NYC on that!
/progic
I might live in NYC if I made an obscene amount of money. There are many other places where it’s way easier to be poor.
If I made obscene amounts of money, I’d avoid New York like the plague. I can have luxury delivered, so I’d pick some place where I can have acreage between me and the neighbors, and not face constant calls to confiscate my money.
Hey, if you’re gonna graft might as well go for the gold.
🤣😂
Laughably stupid but a drop in the bucket among all the rest of the grift, especially the pubsec jobs whose unions have absolute control.
