Saturday evening Links

It’s a balmy 103 here in Spudsville, but it’s a dry heat…fuck that, it’s hot. I look forward to heading East to the Gulch next week, where the temps will be in the 70’s and 80’s…with 60% humidity, which to me…makes it fucking hot.

Links?

Strap in, today’s Links are full of retardation.

Tammy Duckworth, Senator for all. GFY.

Frenchy finds out he shouldn’t rent to grifters.

What’s more retarded than this is the name Nampons. Tampons for your nose.

And Israel killed thousands of Palestinians daily in Gaza. Retards.

Fun fact. The innocent black woman has a lengthy rap sheet.

They believe in communism. Their dear leader said so.

“Thou doth protest too much.”

No shit. Who could have seen this coming?

Okay, that’s it for me. Ima go stick my head in the freezer. Peace out, Glibbies.

I’ll take 94 (and still climbing) with 20% humidity over jungle conditions.

Briggs had a great article debunking the now oft-cited paper which alleged Doge death claims:

No amount of USAID funding any person was given was measured, and neither was it measured whether any person lived or died because of that funding. In other words, X was not measured, nor was Y. Yet the claim (we see next) will be “X caused Y”. Instead, we get things like this: “Our modelling approach, based on previous studies, was done in two stages: first, we created a synthetic cohort of all countries for the years 2024–30, extrapolating and modelling each country-level independent variable from the retrospective dataset…”

Here are their Findings (cutting out the boring stuff, so please check the original):

Higher levels of USAID funding—primarily directed toward LMICs, particularly African countries—were associated with a 15% reduction in age-standardised all-cause mortality… and a 32% reduction in under-five mortality … This finding indicates that 91 839 663 … all-age deaths, including 30 391 980 … in children younger than 5 years, were prevented by USAID funding over the 21-year study period. USAID funding was associated with a 65% reduction … in mortality from HIV/AIDS (representing 25·5 million deaths) … Forecasting models predicted that the current steep funding cuts could result in more than 14 051 750 (uncertainty interval 8 475 990–19 662 191) additional all-age deaths, including 4 537 157 (3 124 796–5 910 791) in children younger than age 5 years, by 2030.

You see it: the direct claim of causality (deaths in children “prevented by USAID funding”) from a regression, which is forbidden in statistics, but of course happens all the time.

    • UnCivilServant

What causal method do they propose that funding left wing subversion has a positive effect on reducing mortality of any source?

Round them up and give them free helicopter rides.

    • juris imprudent

Do you SEE these numbers? I pulled them out of my ass! Now, do not question me or I will call down great vengeance on you!

    • Shpip

Without even getting into the sketchy methodology, 700,000 bodies would be hard to hide. Maybe Mr. Awande can point them out to us.

    • rhywun

I could not care less if it “saved” 700,000 Africans. I did not choose to pay for it. And I won’t.

      • dbleagle

Yep. The lives lost in African nations should not impact my wallet. If somebody wishes to voluntarily donate, all power to them.

  3. The Late P Brooks

I read that NPR thing this morning. The same people who quibble ferociously over the definitions of Democratic Socialism and communism apply the one drop rule without hesitation when the topic is right wing white supremacism.

    • Ted S.

What you see with the Patriot Front isn’t what you get. You see alleged white racists when you’re really getting Feds.

  4. Evan from Evansville

Heard the “Nampon” commercial in my car. Til the end, I swore it was “MANpon.” Was trying to figure out how that was different than “Dude Wipes,” which are also real and popular. My faith in humanity further eroded.

Then “Nampon” revealed its nosy-ness. I strongly advise furthering Dad’s strategy, and just keep an old towel in the car.
My towel’s been mighty useful. (No, never for that. That’s what socks are for.)

      • Evan from Evansville

SIRIUS still has ads. Or that station did. Baseball games, as well. I eat lunch in the car, or I did. Regardless, I ain’t got time for an audiobook, only for it to stop when I arrive. Podcasts or full albums are for ‘big drive’ times.

Further, I try to avoid distractions that could take away thought-processing power. Cuz. I’m driving.
(I don’t wanna miss any elderly pedestrians, yeesh. Ya get extra points for them. Adds up.)

      • UnCivilServant

I find that the part of my brain that processes language doesn’t get used while driving.

It does take a slice of my conscious attention, but not enough to rise to the level of a distraction. When I need to focus on something in the real world, no audiobook has managed to hold my attention over what is happening here and now.

      • Evan from Evansville

To also be fair, I’m a drummer and the dash is my constant kit. Not from consequence, but I’ve learned to not do it when the act of driving requires any real thinking. Especially true when I’m trying something new, a rhythm or fill, etc. It absolutely interferes, having two, unrelated mental pathways active at once. Adds a wrinkle.

In high school, I backed out of a parking space into Betsy’s headlight, both of us being stupid. Other than that, I’ve never had an accident involving any other people or cars. (Slid off an icy road ~15yrs ago, and last year ran over a curb.)
        *fingers firmly crossed*

        I’m an excellent driver.

      • Michael Malaise

I retain more information from audiobooks than books. Not sure why. I think part of it is I always have a place that I can associate with what I’ve listened to. (Mostly on my commutes to work but I can recall the listening much easier than words I may have read on a page)

    • rhywun

I had to look that up.

I had a LOT of nosebleeds when I was a kid. I could have used that then.

      • UnCivilServant

My brother gave me “Pumkin Spice” Dude Wipes for Christmas as a joke. He got them back this last Christmas. I suspect it is going to be a regular back and forth thing until they are whithered and dry and no longer smell of “pumkin spice”.

  5. Evan from Evansville

Odd to see BTS here. They’ve been in the news recently, as one finished their military service. Fun topic in class, that.
“All seven members of BTS have officially completed their mandatory military service in South Korea and were honorably discharged. Min Yoongi (Suga) was the final member to complete his alternative social service duties, marking the end of the group’s hiatus.”

“alternative social service duties?” Of course, he got the extra-easy (likely pointless?) path. I’d guess them performing in certain venues counted. Haven’t knowingly heard a song ‘by’ them. (I do ‘like’ two songs by ‘Twice.’ Mina’s my favorite. *swoooon-cuddle*)

    • Evan from Evansville

I’ll cut Suga some slack, Jack: “Suga didn’t serve in the regular military due to a severe shoulder injury sustained from an accident during his trainee days in 2012. His condition required surgery in 2020 to repair a torn labrum, leading the Military Manpower Administration to assign him to alternative public service as a social service worker.”

I’m still sure it was extra, extra cushy, with plum ‘office hours and caseload.’ (I’m not sure how ‘extreme’ regular Basic+ is for the mandatory service.) From what I hear, the girls K-Pop scene makes Jimmy Savile look quaint. I’m quite certain it’s the same for the boys, one way or another.

I did a quick check, and apparently ReaLemon is a much different/better product than I thought. Like, actual juice concentrate, not weird lab experiment byproduct. Maybe I’ll give home brew lemonade a try. I could certainly back down the sugar in the recipes I saw.

    • rhywun

Yeah, RealLemon is fine. I add it when I make iced tea.

      • Ted S.

        Better than DonLemon.

      • DrOtto

Ain’t no party like a Don Lemon party!

<em.The national DSA website said it believes capitalism must be replaced with “a system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and society.” The group said its vision rejects “authoritarian visions of socialism.”

You might want to check with that guy from the UAW about that.

      • DrOtto

They only last a few weeks and then close the few times they have tried.

The cases often featured left-wing and altruistic people who offer their homes to migrants who either end up violently killing them or squatting their apartments.

I’m sure there is a lesson in there somewhere.

    • J. Frank Parnell

We need more government funding for public housing for migrants?

    • Michael Malaise

I wouldn’t even classify my position as racist. I mean, there are many stories of African students coming to America and outperforming their homeland counterparts and being truly productive citizens. It’s most Culturalist, which I am fine with. I don’t want to import cultures that don’t jive with ours without some level of strict assimilation.

      • rhywun

Yup. Accusations of “racism” in this matter are just lazy, cheap shots from people who have nothing substantial to bring to the discussion. It’s disgusting.

      • dbleagle

Lionel Shriver’s latest novel deals with this exact issue- except it is set in NYC and involves out southern illegal border crossers.

“A Better Life” for those who are interested.

      • rhywun

Looks interesting. I have not read anything by her.

      • dbleagle

She is very interesting. “The Mandibles” follows a family as America collapses from debt and they try to make it to part of the continent with freedom. “Mania” is a satire about when it is it becomes illegal to acknowledge differences in intelligence because “it is the last great civil rights fight.” “We Need to Talk About Kevin” is probably her best-known novel.

  11. The Late P Brooks

Rather than being a fully defined political ideology in the United States, democratic socialism can be understood as a reaction to establishment politics that uses somewhat left-leaning principles, such as universal healthcare, creating more affordable housing and reorienting U.S. policy in the Middle East, all of which are popular among Democrats, said Nick Beauchamp, an associate professor of political science at Northeastern University.

“These are the things that the candidates are running on, these are things that people care about,” he told USA TODAY. “They’re not necessarily about either democracy or socialism, but as part of that sort of bundle of left policies that people are now associating with these terms.”

Think of it as an ephemeral penumbra of emotionalism, heavily tinged with envy and resentment.

    • rhywun

can be understood as a reaction to establishment herpity derpity doo

Or, you know, it could just be understood as a temporary stop on the way to communism – exactly as “socialism” has always been presented and exactly as the no-shit communists who have taken over the movement are treating it.

    • R C Dean

Rather than being a fully defined political ideology

The better for, err, strategic messaging, motte-and-bailying, that kind of thing.

      • Chafed

Yeah, the professor is sympathetic to the cause and doesn’t want to give away the game.

A new “housing innovator” (tinymaxxer?) has sprouted in my youtube feed.

First you erect a quonset hut. Then you build a house inside it.

    Genius!

Like they’d lose at basketball to a boys soccer team.

The Patriot Front is just an idea.

    • Evan from Evansville

I know nothing of them, but lean w the crowd here on ‘created by orgs funded /driven by Team Blue’s SPLC brigade.’
Furthering that, if you were gonna make a big, public ‘protest’ on America’s 250th, just why the fuck would they all take public transport to get there? Seems mighty risky, especially now. Feels like desperate.

Anyone heard more legit info about ’em?

      • DrOtto

Have you ridden public transportation lately? You need someone to have your back. Going it alone isn’t a viable action.

New York Times Countersues U.S. Over Claim It Discriminated Against White Male Employee

And it when it will be proven that the white male was discriminated against (because they and many similar outfits have been openly doing so for decades), the argument will mysteriously pivot to “sure we discriminate and it’s a good thing”.

    • Evan from Evansville

“the argument will mysteriously pivot to “sure we discriminate and it’s a good thing”.”

^^ My thoughts as well. ‘We weren’t REALLY discriminating. We were … making reparations for PAST discrimination.. /compared to discrimination in other newsrooms, we’re much better.. or they can start the investigation and pull out some child sex stuff on the dude they passed over.

Hmph. Norway should be gifted a goal to make up for the goal that England should not have been awarded. Iffy refereeing again.

    • RAHeinlein

Norway didn’t play as well as they should have, but the ref called everything England’s way in-general and by the end “decided” the winner. Aside – I can’t STAND Stu and John calling any match…

Downstairs for a bit and Dad was upset he didn’t get to see much of his Viking Crush. I pointed out a Belgian player who was MUCH more attractive. Mom agreed. (Don’t know the player. Short-ish brown hair, light beard, white.) Dad didn’t accept this.

He was gonna add something and then stopped. Perhaps he didn’t want more jokes thrown at him. *curious face*

Did money really get cut, or just redirected?

  17. Evan from Evansville

This is fun. Perhaps I shouldn’t fall into this trap, but I think he’s being sincere, here. (He isn’t always.)
“President Trump argued on Saturday in a series of social media posts that the Democratic Party’s leaders have lost control.

“The Radical Left Lunatics, often referred to as Dumocrats, have lost control of their Party. They are being led by loud and unattractive people who have totally lost their way. Hopefully, they will fight back, and not let this sick, Communist ideology, take over America!” he wrote on Truth Social.

“I would often say in Speeches, and otherwise, America will never be a Socialist Country, and I was 100% correct, the Dumocrats skipped Socialism, and went all the way down to Communism. AMERICA WILL NEVER BE A COMMUNIST COUNTRY!” he wrote in another post.

In a separate post, Trump described the Democratic Party as a “sinking ship.”

    • R.J.

Nobody skipped socialism. We’ve been living it for at least 50 years.

      • rhywun

        Yeah, no kidding.

Otherwise Donald is spot-on in his usual inartful way despite the furious attempts by the likes of USA Today and NPR to gaslight.

Productive day, today. Possibly adjacent thought: Among other things, I got some v-neck Ts today. Looked up my size, cuz I’m small enough I kinda gotta. So small, slim fit, same as usual, but at Kohl’s instead of my usual. Well. They fit. But like ‘look good in workout’ tight. I’m debating if I like this, and not for the look, whatsoever.

It’s kinda like I’m being hugged. I haven’t decided how I feel about this, so no extreme, either way. I hope the armpits loosen a bit, as I wear it now and likely to sleep. It does feel cozy. I hope it lasts…

Also turns out my Check Engine Light will keep just turning on cuz the damn Emissions sensor. Fuck that shit. Black tape may be coming back in style on my dash. Shyeah.
