Saturday evening Links

Yes, that day is rapidly approaching. Three days until the progeny and the missus embark on a four day excursion to The Gulch. I’ll be flying back in comfort on Wednesday. 😀 I’m sadly going to miss all the delights of the I80 corridor. But it does signal the end of eight months of blowing and going. Once we’re back, the calendar is actually open the rest of the year. I’m looking forward to it.

Links?

She had a nanny?

What an absolute fucking bitch.

“We won!” “No. WE won!”

Flat Hal is confused. And any parent who claims their 4-10 year old is “gender diverse” needs to go into the chipper.

Teeing up the next ME conflict.

Yeah, but nothing happened. The media told us so.

I have to admit, this is pretty cool.

Okay, that’s it for me. Have a great weekend. Peace out, Glibbies.

This isn’t the Minnesoda I grew up in nor the MN I presently live in.

There must be something in the water in the 7 county Metro area. Unfortunately that’s the center of population and politics and controls the other 77 counties.

The daughter of a 70s Hollywood icon has provoked anger by allegedly abusing Scotland’s legal aid funding to drive two Western Isles community groups to near bankruptcy.

    Community groups? Fuck ’em.

A little while ago youtube served up a clip from something called the Iced Coffee Hour (never heard of them). Mike Rowe, talking about jobs. I can’t find the clip. There is a stupidly long video on their youtube site, though.

A couple of hours ago we had some really promising thunder, but no rain. Phooey.

    • Aloysious

      Pfui is right.

I tried to understand WTF was going on in that story but I gave up. None of it makes any sense.

And any parent who claims their 4-10 year old is “gender diverse” needs to go into the chipper.

“But having a kid that’s ‘neurodivergent’ isn’t special enough in my book club!”

    • Mojeaux

People try to tell me I’m “neurodivergent.” Fuck you. Everybody is.

I think [insert constellation of neural pathways here] way. This does not need a label. It’s how I think. I’ve had issues with jobs and people because of it. Okay. Sucks to be me. I’ll have to route around because my brain isn’t changing.

So yes, ADHD. And? If anything, it’s a superpower, but why can’t I just live without labels? All that taxonomy is exhausting.

      • Evan from Evansville

“People try to tell me I’m “neurodivergent.” Fuck you. Everybody is.”

*fist bump explosion* I hate that phrase for everything it is. It’s another all-encompassing, amorphous term for whatever they want it to mean at that specific moment. Show me a ‘uniform,’ or a ‘normal’ person. Go ahead. *grrrrrrgle*

      • rhywun

It’s like “non-binary”. It means “look at me” more than anything else.

    • UnCivilServant

I would be ashamed of having a brain that was not normal.

      • Not Adahn

        Normal seems to be sub-optimal

      Don’t be obtuse, Roman.

      • UnCivilServant

But it identifies as a thousand years old!

      • Brochettaward

This reminds me a bit of the shit India and China play with old maps. China in particular. They go and point to any old map that shows some Chinese dynasty that once possessed a territory and claim it’s theirs. The current regime has no part of the modern Chinese commie state and China has consisted of different territories at different points in history and sometimes been divided into multiple states.

I had a professor in a history class on India who seemed to think Pakistan rightfully belonged to India. Asked everyone their thoughts on it in a paper and I pointed out that the territory of Pakistan was not part of larger India in most points of history and that the people of Pakistan would rather not be part of India proper. Kind of a big deal.

People have weird concepts of what governments/states actually are. No group really has claim to any land that they can’t hold. It’s the reality of the world. On top of that, you can’t claim some moral claim to a territory as people attempt today when the people on that land don’t want to be a country with you.

It’s a bit like no-fault divorce in my view.

    Interruptus

The Chicago Sky’s home game against Golden State was interrupted when multiple sex toys were thrown on the court Friday night, the second consecutive night for a disruption similar to what occurred in several WNBA games last season.

The incident happened in the third quarter of the Sky’s 73-70 victory over the Valkyries. Players stayed on the court while arena personnel removed the items from the court.

Were they wearing hazmat suits and using tongs?

    • Brochettaward

“any parent who claims their 4-10 year old is “gender diverse” needs to…” <– This for me is the clearest Soviet, Orwellian, example of people not hearing, but *absorbing* the lies they're fed, and now they repeat them themselves. A key part of demoralization, as I recall. There's simply no 'reaching' those people. Too much of themselves is invested in it at this point. Fuckin' frustratin'.

Went go-karting with the 6yo. He got to ride with me, but unfortunately, he had to ride with me. This was grand and we had a great time, but it did mean my car was *dramatically* slower than the others. Well. Shucks. But we had a lot of fun. He's very open and we just have conversations about whatever. The 13yo could, but is as measured as his father, and good luck with the 11yo. He won't respond to a casual "hello" when first seeing a family member.

Excited to go with him sometime to the re-done Indy Motor Speedway museum. Always look on the bright side, smiley faces in headlights, having so much time with him growing up is a huge pro-tradeoff of living here with my parents. (Still. *shudder* Tho also, other than three months in Kokomo that didn't go well, I haven't had my own place since…. 2022 in Korea. Nearly forgotten that part of adulthood. *shudder*)

I suppose the US could “win” if we really wanted to. Or could define what “winning” means here.

  17. rhywun

The U.S. Education Department announced the investigation in late July, prompted by a complaint filed with the agency’s Student Privacy Policy Office by parental rights group Defending Education, after Minnesota families said the public schools intended to use the dolls.

I am guessing that the next Dem administration is going to ignore any bigot parents and flood every public school with tranny dolls in order to (1) spite Trump and (2) smash the system.

  18. Evan from Evansville

Now pitching for the Mariners: Seranthony Dominguez. Seranthony, eh? Huh. Parents really wanted to bestow that title, I s’pose. Shorten his name, like most folk do, might cause confusion for Siri. I hope that’s annoying for ’em.

    • rhywun

I’m sure I’ve seen that name elsewhere.

Made-up Latin American names are often extremely ridiculous, just like here in the US. I’ve given up rolling my eyes at them.

      • Gdragon

When asked about his first name Dominguez says that his parents heard it on TV. Given that he was born not too long after Anthony Hopkins was knighted I have always assumed that his parents misinterpreted that name and title combo.

    TOO LOCAL NEWS: Live grenade!

A snorkeler found a live grenade in a river in Bristol on Thursday, police said.

Police said they aren’t sure how it got there, but they said they believe it has clearly been there for a long time.

The person who found it called police right away. Police called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

They X-rayed the grenade and found it had all the elements needed to be a live ordinance, meaning it could potentially have detonated.

State police said it’s not uncommon to find grenades lying around. In fact, they receive about 100 to 200 calls each year about grenade discoveries.

TOO LOCAL NEWS: Leader of Laconia Bike Week ride dead

Leader of the ride since 1991 for Laconia Motorcycle Week, Charlie St. Clair, who was also a Democrat Laconia State Representative, has died as a result of his injuries while making his way on a motorcycle to his 50th rally to the nation’s largest gathering at Sturgis, South Dakota, following a catastrophic accident with his rear wheel exploding on an interstate highway.

A man who would who would correct this reporter that this was not an “event” but many events across the state, bringing thousands of riders to its epicenter at Weirs Beach the third largest in the nation, crashed after a rear wheel tire blew out on his motorcycle in Avon, Ohio.

I’ve trying to move the video processing to the linux box so I don’t have to cache it all to the SSD in my desktop. Just rip to the mass storage RAID and do the conversion there.

But while MakeMKV has decided to work just fine, Handbrake is fighting me. I have a UI – that doesn’t respond to inputs.

Were it my choice, I’d really only have Prime, YouTube and Cubs games. <– I can't really do that last one. Well. I can get Spectrum. Unless the game's on Friday and Apple has a Cubs game on for unpredictable reasons, or ESPN or ABC FOX etc etc etc etc … shucks. They do getcha, don't they? I don't like. Especially!… when I can't get the damn radio broadcast cuz that game is national. That's why I'm on the fucking radio! (And cuz Pat Hughes is fantastic.)

I was only up in my own place in Kokomo for three months, but I just kept doing what I had been doing: Laptop for whatever I'm up to, and a tablet as my tiny-TV for YouTube or whatever I could get.

No chance to entertain. And even if I did! *heels tap* I'd be the night's en-ter-taaiin-ment! *slides on knees, hands held high*

    Is this thing on?

If I were writing an article I’d entitle this one “Sleepless in Vermont” although that’s not entirely accurate.

It’s too bad my first foray into “Glibs After Dark” is actually “Glibs Before Dawn” and on a Sunday. I may have the whole site to myself.

    • Ted S.

      No, it’s not on.

  28. Richard

    Mine! All mine!

I live in a narrow part of the Missisquoi River valley right where the river enters the U.S. from Canada. When I got back to my cabin yesterday afternoon I heard thumping music wafting in from parts vaguely northeast. Sounds echo up and down the river valley really well and this thumping music was a tune, if you can call it that, I’ve heard before. It didn’t fill me with delight because in the past when it’s started it doesn’t stop for a very long time.

It hasn’t stopped. It’s still going on. A single thumping tune on endless repeat. I did get some sleep but woke up at 2am and realized further repose just wasn’t going to happen so I decided to do something completely different. I dressed, holstered myself with a few flashlights, and hiked past the end of the road to see if the music was coming from one of my neighbors. I didn’t think so, my neighbors aren’t assholes, but I’d never checked before and I had all the time in the world.

Nope. It’s an asshole in Canada. Forget tariffs. I want to launch a missile strike.

The thing is, the river valley is shaped in such a way my cabin is a local focus for the noise. It’s louder here than almost anywhere else farther up the road.

  29. Richard

Another reason I’m commenting uncharacteristically early is I just upgraded my cabin’s Internet access which is a cell phone in WiFi hotspot mode. I used to have a $20/month cell phone plan that didn’t allow hotspot mode but used an Android app called PdaNet+ to get around that for web access. Then I was forced to upgrade my ancient phone and PdaNet+ stopped working reliably. I upgraded to a $30/month plan that has hotspot mode and after the usual trials and tribulations got it working yesterday. This online session is something of a victory lap.

  30. Richard

Well that concludes my set for this morning. Thanks everyone, you’ve been great.
