Friday Rivalry Rematch Afternoon Links

It’s… beautiful!

Yeah, it would be better if the Stillers and Bengals were flipped, but that can happen this weekend. Yes, the feeling is different here in Cleveland this season. It’s a mix of confused optimism. All of us expected this season to be a wash, setting us up for a prime draft pick next year. Instead, our young team (2nd youngest roster, 2nd most snaps played by players drafted in 25/26) keeps finding improbable ways to win. Deshaun is looking like a mediocre QB (and a garbage person, but I’m not going to be shamed for cheering for Watson by people who cheered for Vick), and even the newly acquired players grasp the rivalry. We’ve beaten the Stillers already, they’re coming off international travel, and Browns fans are traveling for this one. I’ve gotten several offers for group bus rides (round trip) to Pittsburgh to watch the game. The Browns have not swept the Stillers since the 80s, and lost won in the regular season back in 2003.

The last time we won in Pittsburgh was not in the regular season though…

But you care not for my sportsball fandom, and worry not, it’s likely that the Browns will play down to expectations at some point, but damn it, we’re going to ride with the Kardiac Kids 2.0 for a while and enjoy it.

Fuck off Tim. Steam’s most arm twisting action was requiring it be installed and used for Half Life 2 and the Orange Box. That was a LONG time ago, they’ve built up trust by not being douches like you.

Prepare for potential salt shortages this winter (again).

Monsters live among us.

In things I never thought I would need to explain, some people don’t even know what a Walking Taco is.

I am not opposed to this.

Whenever there’s work to replicate a recipe like this, I wonder about ingredient shift over time. Not just sizes, but quality of ingredients and the like.

Interesting that this is coming from NPR.

Maybe they can relocate to Gaza?

He will free the devil and put you back in CHAINS!

What could possibly go wrong?

I’m sure some of you have noticed this.

Alright, that’s enough for bad news, let’s get going with a cocktail. Bringing it over from this week’s Alchemist post:

Monkey Gland

  • 1 part (1.5 oz) dry gin
  • 1 part (1.5 oz) orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon grenadine
  • 1 tablespoon absinthe

Orange juice is an ingredient that was popular in the pre-prohibition era up until the disco era (where it lingered on in Screwdrivers, Harvey Wallbangers, and Tequila Sunrises). If you’re not at a craft cocktail bar, it’s possible that they won’t have orange juice. It can be finicky as well, as the sweetness level can vary wildly, and in most of these drinks, the orange juice is there as a sweetener as well.

The name of this drink comes from the Prohibition era, named after medical experimentation in which grafting some very specific glands from monkeys onto old men would make them feel younger and more virile. Thankfully, we’ve moved past crazy experiments for longevity and have decided to make better drinks.

This drink is built in a shaker, shaken and strained into a chilled coupe glass. I’ve seen some recipes move the absinthe to a rinse of the glass (which I am not a fan of, there’s no reason to waste booze), or swap out the absinthe for another herbal liquor (such as Fernet Branca or Benedictine).

And with that, I’ll let you get to your weekend. Let’s go Browns! Let’s go Bills!

My brother went to Pittsburgh for an AFC championship game. Visiting fans were not well received.

Oh, nor would I expect to be. They, like their players, are dirty.

To encourage more of these beneficial donations, the Brewers Association supports an excise tax credit tied to the dry weight of spent grain donated. The proposal is simple: when brewers give their byproducts to farmers and ranchers, they would earn a credit against their federal and state excise tax bill(s).

My local microbrewery sends its spent grain to a hog farm. The farm gets a premium price for pigs finished on the grains.

This is a policy proposal that has some chops.

    • Grumbletarian

And if both are prosperous enough, they will both end up living high on the hog.

Do you have agitators at your lake demanding to shut down the salt mines? They were doing that when I lived on Cayuga Lake.

    • Nephilium

Nope. There’s still other active salt mines under the Lake. But there’s quite a bit of concern about the one that got shut down, as it was from water intrusion. If that’s from the Lake, that could get very bad, very quick.

      • rhywun

They’re Very Concerned™️ about salt leaking into the water. Who knows.

Also interesting as it is literally the only reason an occasional train still passes through town. The line north of the salt mine was abandoned long ago, along with several others that used to serve long-gone industry.

I used to drink copious quantities of absinthe, so much that I saw God and founded a new religion.

This caused some issues at my job, since they weren’t on board with my absinthe-theism.

From the earlier thread, it was noted that Rand Paul or Thomas Massie could get the GOP nod in 2028 and the media would still label them as Trump supporters. Well, don’t any of you find it curious that Thomas Massie and Adolph Hitler have the exact same number of letters in their first and last names?!!!

    • Drake

They both enjoy living in remote hilly hideouts. The similarities are too disturbing.

The TV at the gym has the local news on. Just saw 5 minutes straight of alternating Darlene Graham and Annie Andrews commercials. I hate them both more than ever now.
