Saturday evening Links

Have I mentioned how much I hate maple trees? From the spinners in the spring to the foot deep layer of leaves in the fall. I’m headed across the street in a bit to blow leaves for an elderly couple. The husband has Alzheimer’s and the leaves are a constant source of stress, because he doesn’t have the wherewithal to pick them up any more. Thankfully, I have people that are going to handle my leaves.

Links?

Big Olive Oil is manipulating the market.

I luv me some gridlock. Lots of rended garments and tears of frustration are on the horizon.

Poland has angry trannies?

Coincidence?

Mostly peaceful, I’m sure.

That would be a lot of fun.

Bibi on the way out?

Stunning news. No, not really.

Okay, that’s good enough for today. Time to move leaves before Boise take on Colorado State. Peace out, Glibbies.

Iommi – From the Dark is my soundtrack for Sautrday lynx.

Also, I hate Sycamore leaves. Messy trees. I spent several hours mulching those stupid leaves, and get to look forward to at least two more battles against the perfidious monstrosities over the next month and a half.

Second on the list behind maples.

Maples are the gift that keeps-on givin’ – our neighborhood if full of maples and the shedding seems to go on for months.

Maples and the willow tree have cost me a lot of money. Maples grow too big here and they’re brittle. Willows are willows.

      • dbleagle

You should try Hawaii for leaves. With our climate we get growth, lots of growth, twelve months a year. Every other week I put three big green bins out and usually partially fill the weekly garbage bin as well.

But it does sound like the maples suck.

Oaks are that for me. Most maples here in southern NH drop completely and early, except for some reason for a sugar maple in my front yard.

Why Spain is taking 188,000 tonnes of olive oil off the market

Doesn’t matter – we have plenty of adulterated olive oil in the US so prices will continue to fall.

        Citation needed.

      • kinnath

Prompt: Do diamond producers maintain a monopoly on production and withhold diamond from the market to raise prices

        Answer:

Historically, yes, but today, no. For most of the 20th century, De Beers operated a near-monopoly that controlled roughly 80% to 90% of global rough diamond supply. To keep prices artificially high, the company practiced supply restriction by stockpiling billions of dollars worth of diamonds in vaults and refusing to release them during periods of weak demand. They also used their dominant market share to pressure independent producers into selling through their Central Selling Organisation (CSO) channel, ensuring they could manage global inventory and stabilize prices.

The monopoly has since broken down. Starting in the late 20th century, the discovery of major diamond deposits in Russia, Canada, and Australia allowed new producers to bypass De Beers’ distribution channel. By 2021, De Beers’ market share had fallen to approximately 25%, equal to that of its main competitor, Alrosa. Today, diamond prices are primarily driven by market supply and demand dynamics rather than a single entity’s artificial withholding, although De Beers and other large producers still exert significant influence over the market structure.

      • Trigger Hippie

Okay, consider me mistaken. Working off outdated data.

      • Trigger Hippie

Then again, if two companies control fifty percent of the market I’d be less than shocked to find out the practice was still happening.

I’ve never lived in a place where an abundance of autumn leaves would begin to be a problem. In Evansville, we had a pretty big yard, kinda walled in by trees. The leaves take care of themselves. I can see raking ’em together for whatever reason. The 13yo made a pile at their house and SiL put a “Jump ahead” sign on it. I was pleased it had one, and then a few human-sized prints a few hours later.

Y’all have particular trees ya don’t like. Damn. Weirdos. Treecist. Oh, Treexist, but “treExist” with a commie CO- under it. There’s your ‘co-exist tree’ propaganda for ya. *Thunberg takes notes, wishes for relevance*

My neighbors have three catalpa trees, and all the shit from them ends up in my yard. First there’s flowers in spring, then huge leaves, then these godawful, footlong seed pods that look like giant green beans.

    • Threedoor

      Bean trees have a name?

      Mind blown.

      • Spudalicious

Three maples, two oaks, a mulberry tree, and assorted smaller trees and bushes on my suburban lot. I actually like the bright red of the maples.

    • Threedoor

      Mulberry trees are messy.
      But delicious.

    • Shpip

I have about four dozen trees. Most are longleaf pines — no problem there.

But I also have a bunch of water oaks. Developers love them because they’re fast growing and provide lots of shade. Unfortunately, they shed branches readily (bad in a thunderstorm zone) and only live fifty years or so.

The first time my wife woke me up screaming because a water oak branch had come down on the roof like the lawn dart of the gods, poking a softball-sized hole through the shingles during a driving rainstorm, well… I’ll never forget that night.

Another tree cratered in my back porch roof, necessitating a $27k replacement. More branches have come down on my cars, causing thousand of dollars worth of body work.

And because I live in Big College Town, the tree huggers in charge of the city will fine me thousands if I pay thousands to just have the fucking things cut down. So I just get to grimace and bear it.

      • Threedoor

        Dang.
I live in what was a wheat field.

        It’s desolate.
For the first six years we didn’t have a well, I planted one tree and even with collecting all the rainwater I could could not keep it alive. I won’t live long enough to see any adult trees on my place.

    • R C Dean

I have an unknown number of junipers and an equally unknown, although much smaller, number of pines. They’re on their own.

I also have a Russian olive, whose days are numbered. I think I will replace it with a couple three aspens. I also have three Japanese Maples that I planted that are still quite small. One is in a pot, so it may not count.

      • Threedoor

Most of what we have are potted Japanese maples. I can move them to the shade when summer progresses.

      • Spudalicious

It was medieval-ish, but magical realism doesn’t need to adhere to historicity. It didn’t play like an inclusivity exercise. It was just part of the gag. I mean, the romantic hero is made out of wicker, walks, talks, thinks, so… a black tavernkeeper doesn’t offend me. ALSO, the clothes were just enough OFF to carry the magical realism all the way through.

I have mostly completed one bicycle — the 1980 Gitane Super Corsa

    Added pedals and toe clips.

Purchased use clincher wheels from the mid-80s. The original wheels are Shimano Dura Ace Ex 7200 hub with Mavic tubular rims. The new-to-me wheels are Shimano Dura Ace 7400 with Mavic clincher rims. So, an upgrade on the hubs actually.

Added a Shimano 7-speed freewheel to the clincher wheels. The original wheels had a 6-speed freewheel.

You get 7 cogs in the space of 6 by reducing the distance between them. This means you need a skinnier chain. Which I bought (mid-80s NOS matching the freewheel).

The new chain and new rear wheel is on the bike. What the fuck! Oh, the chain is too long. Now I need to shorten it.

Good time to take a break. So, here I am.

    • kinnath

Time to go fuck around with the chain.

  26. Brochettaward

I’m not scared of much in life but having my fate in anyway back in the hands of petty little bureaucrats in anyway shape or form isn’t just sickening but frankly my worst fucking nightmare.

I’ve been told outright that I’ll get this fucking dog back. I went there today because of course they turn their phones off on the weekend (I’m sure funding isn’t great for a dog shelter to begin with). I had been told three days ago I couldn’t bring treats by the retarded and lazy receptionist only for the girl who actually works there to sign off on it…if they were sealed.

You know, because I’m going to poison the dog I’m fighting for or give him super serum so he can break out or something. But whatever. Hopefully some actually get to my dog but who the fuck knows.

But back to the things they’ve said. I couldn’t get clear answers from these fucks for days. Like the law should be pretty straightforward and I was only asking about the process. The dog catcher came and talked past me and was pretty fucking condescending because legally dog wasn’t mine and he quite clearly wanted to steer the conversation to killing the dog. The receptionist was apparently too dumb and lazy to even get actual answers to questions from anyone who has authority.

Then I get looked at like I’m crazy because I’m calling every day trying to get hold of someone who makes decisions. I got the director of this place and he said that basically if it was up to them they’d destroy the dog. Didn’t say outright legally they can’t but that’s the take I get. They didn’t give two flying fucks about anything I had to say about why what happened happened and their minds were made up from the start.

I’ve still seen too many fucking horror stories about petty little fucking tyrants in local government over the years on top of shit I’ve experienced to rest easy.

And right now they’re plying him with Gabapentin because he’s scared and freaking out though they downplayed it. As I’ve said before, not a single god damn thing is being accomplished by holding the dog for 10 days. It’s really pathetic ass covering at best as far as I can tell. No one seriously thinks the dog has rabies which is the legal pretext for it.

So I sit here and wait and stew knowing the dog’s miserable right now. My anger is a lot lower than it was last week when it was like the worst I’ve ever experienced. I’m pretty calm and patient but there’s only so much bullshit I can take in life to be blunt. Everyone has their breaking point.

I don’t want to just keep ranting but like fuck this shit. Like any interaction I have with government it’s just fucking dumb.

    • Brochettaward

There’s also something about the young girls who work at places like that. They’re devoid of emotion. Like the dog is clearly fucking miserable and it’s clearly pretty cruel when I’m literally off from work and he could be with me 24/7 right now (4th vacation ruined by fuckface because of their insanity frankly). But you have these like 20 or so year old girls who could give two fucks.

I don’t know if it’s just because they deal with dogs in cages all day or just because they are told what they’re doing is right by authority but it seems to be a trend where government is doing evil shit there’s dopey young girls going right along with it all.

I mean at least the one had enough sense to let me bring in treats for the little fuck (assuming they get to him for real).

      • Evan from Evansville

I doubt there’s much ‘thinking’ at that level. Just ‘do job for two weeks, get paid.’ Repeat, for maybe a year or two.

‘Splitting up’ with your roommate seems best. I’ve forgotten and shan’t pry, but that seems best for all.

      • Brochettaward

Quick recap on that. I tried leaving, and the fuck stick attacked me in front of the dog. It was the first real incident though it had been building to that for some time. The dog warned them for months for some time by jumping up and doing a kind of not growl but some sort of noise to warn them to stop. If the dog had wanted to bite, clearly would have been able to.

Like they were shouting at me as I was trying to leave. I didn’t think they’d be so god damn dumb to try that with the dog there. They can’t win a fight against me or the dog let alone both but hey…on top of that repeatedly tried barging into my room and I had to throw them out before Butters could get at them.

But yea, things calmed down once dog was in my sole care which I wasn’t sure would be possible when I leave for work and things. Was the dog going to cry and bark and make this untenable? It wasn’t.

But then fuckface had to start going into the room. The dog seemed to react fine when I wasn’t home. But as I had warned this person about for months we don’t know what will set the dog off with them. The dog is primed to view them as a threat now – and not wrong for that. And on top of that the dog trainer I hired said outright that each time the dog would pick up where he left off. Escalation phase was over.

When I am home the dog cannot be around this person is hyper vigilant to say the least about their presence. So the crux of the issue is the dog is very protective of me but a number of cunts think I should just kill the dog. People really do not deserve dogs. Like I can’t imagine returning that sort of loyalty with a shrug and a shot to put them to sleep.

But things seemed fine. They were genuinely trying to help in their mind. I caved and let them start taking the dog out to pee and little things when I was doing longer days at work.

So it’s my fault as well. I got dumb and complacent, though mostly going off what they said about how the dog responded to them when I wasn’t there.

I’m putting a lock on the door if I stay. I don’t have a living arrangement at the moment to take this one and the lease goes until fucking August of next year.

Like the dog doesn’t set eyes on the tard otherwise. But I have concerns about if he’ll somehow be even more amped up when he comes back about them not to mention when I have to leave for work. Dog had been perfectly well behaved when I was gone. I hope that sticks but locking him up away from me for 11 days may have an effect you know?

        But these fucks don’t care.

      • Brochettaward

It’s a complicated situation. Just taking the dog and getting the fuck out of here was on my mind. First thing is getting the dog back and seeing how they’re doing and how they re-adjust.

I can’t emphasize enough how dumb I find holding the dog for 10-11 days. If he’s coming back to me, nothing about this is going to increase the chances of long term success. The dog has never done anything aggressive with anyone. it’s one person with a long history and build-up (a person the dog frankly loved at one point). Dog loves people and I can’t imagine that won’t be harmed by all this.

      • Evan from Evansville

Damn. People throwing all that shit on the dog to somehow ‘make it better’ is just… well. You described it at length, like when ignorance and idiocy start to bleed into active nastiness. Hope it ends as well as it possibly can. Given my situation, I’m as blessed as possible by my ‘roommates’ and family. I honestly cannot imagine. pheeew I suppose when I lived with my Canadian girlfriend in Singapore, she yelled at me a few times. *hands up* That’s it.

People and dogs ‘deserve’ each other. Just like kids, dogs reflect their upbringing. Was walking Peab’ a bit ago, thinking about how well he’s doing at 16 after he had a growth taken off his leg earlier this year. Last January I was giving him 3-5 months. He was with me during a seizure a bit off the trail a couple years back. Kinda always, but more now, I mostly let him walk me as long as we get to a few checkpoints. He appreciates the freedom to sniff about, methinks.

I want a pack of doggie minions around me, alert and on task to that day’s mission. I’m also gonna need a pride of sleek, crafty — and maybe kinda sexy — night watch kitties to keep everything in check on my compound where we all stay. I call ’em teams “Mass” and “Hysteria” and we’d hang out, party together. I’d also like dessert in my fantasy tree house, but I’ll have to think of what.

I don’t really need much concern. I just wanted straight answers. If the receptionist doesn’t know what she’s talking about maybe she shouldn’t say anything and direct me to someone who can. And then when the dog owner leaves a message for a supervisor, they could return a call. Or the dog catcher calling himself an investigator could stop bullshitting and do his actual job and answer a question straight.

I get your point. Like I don’t look for much but like with anything with government no one seems to know and no one knows who does know let alone who is making the decision.

Like there’s a shit ton of things involved in him being declared a dangerous dog. And you have a very short window to meet the requirements or they kill the dog anyway. So I needed an answer if they were going that route or not. Not even if they were going to do it but if the actual process was starting. And it was like no one knew.

And the asshole who can get answers, the supposed victim, was being a douche and dragging their ass while I had to bite my tongue because I need their cooperation. And I get painted as crazy.

Come live with this fucker and we’ll see whose crazy motherfuckers.

Gabapentin is good for sleep. Pup Peabody takes it too, sometimes.

So, I’ve added another production company to my preferred brands list: Black Bear. The trailers before this movie were FANTASTIC.

    • Brochettaward

What else have they made or are they making?

      • Mojeaux

Now, Wicker is the only thing I’ve seen of theirs so far. One of the trailers was a Black Bear film that was intriguing. Wife & Dog, but I went to their website, and it looks promising.

A24 has a film coming up that looks awesome.

OH OH OH AND THEN!!! Pedro Almodovar has another film coming out!

And then my genre-loving compadre Tarantino has The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth coming up also.

The movie theater is, at this point, the only place I can keep my attention span in check and sink into a story. If there’s a 1990s film renaissance coming up, I’m here for it.

        Mojeaux:

FYI, the Cliff Booth movie is not directed by Tarantino. It’s a David Fincher movie (which isn’t a bad thing for me).

I don’t know what would inspire her to wear that shirt and post it or what she is supposed to be politically or who makes the shirt even. “Kids” do dumb shit. But kicking her out of school for wearing a shirt is the sort of bullshit that’s about to make a roaring comeback. Just wait until the Dems take back the White House in ’28.

Tax the people calling for her to be kicked out of school.

And if she were wearing shorts with TAX DAT ASS scralled across her buttocks she would either be considered an ally of female empowerment or being adherent to the patriarchy, depending on her stated views via social media.

      …again, America is retarded.

“Constanza Peña, daughter of former Paraguay President Santiago Peña, poses for a gym selfie in a T-shirt reading “TTP, Tax The Poor.”

Would party hardy with Ms. Peña. I’d tax her pour with free samples of me.

Big leaf maples here and the product name doesn’t lie. The ones in front of the house fall differently than the one in parking lot that’s different than the ones in the backyard. Probably about four weeks or more of shedding. Wind or rainstorms knock down more, but also soaks the leaves so they’re harder to blow. Best is to just keep on top of them before they get wet and pulped by driving or walking over them.

Fuckers grow fast and tall, and stretch towards any available patches of sunlight causing excessive shade in the summer time. If I had my druthers, I’d cut every one on the property down and any overhanging from the neighbors.
