Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) took a jab at former President Obama this week after the Democrat criticized the declared 2024 GOP presidential contender over his remarks about race and racial progress in the country.

“Let us not forget we are a land of opportunity, not a land of oppression. Democrats deny our progress to protect their power. The Left wants you to believe faith in America is a fraud and progress in our nation is a myth,” Scott said in a statement Thursday.

“The truth of MY life disproves the lies of the radical Left. We live in a country where little Black and Brown boys and girls can be President of the United States. The truth is – we’ve had one and the good news is – we will have another,” he added.

The South Carolina Republican’s remarks are in response to comments Obama made during a podcast interview with his former White House senior adviser David Axelrod published Thursday. The former president, who was asked about Scott’s messaging on race, suggested Scott was not offering solutions for how to tackle systematic racism within the country or acknowledging the difficulties Black Americans face.

Barack Obama- the poster boy of black oppression in America.

    • KK, Non-Man

The irony is Obama isn’t even descended from former slaves. Not to mention enslaved people came from west Africa, not Kenya.

      • Gustave Lytton

Similarly with Kamala, whose black father was from Jamaica. But they’re real black Americans, unlike Tim Scott or Clarence Thomas.

“And so if a Republican, who may even be sincere in saying, ‘I want us all to live together,’ doesn’t have a plan for how do we address crippling generational poverty that is a consequence of hundreds of years of racism in this society, and we need to do something about that. If that candidate is not willing to acknowledge that, again and again, we’ve seen discrimination in everything from … getting a job to buying a house to how the criminal justice system operates,” Obama said.

    Back on track

Former President Barack Obama will sit down with CNN’s Chief International Anchor Christiane Amanpour for an exclusive in-depth conversation about the state of democracy that will air June 22 at 10 p.m. ET.

Amanpour and Obama will speak in Athens – a symbolic setting of democracy – during the former president’s visit to the city with his Obama Foundation. The interview will air across a special program, “Obama & Amanpour: Will Democracy Win?”

The two will discuss the threats to US democracy as the 2024 presidential race heats up amid the ongoing controversies around former US President Donald Trump, specifically his continued falsehoods about the 2020 presidential election and various affronts to democratic safeguards in the US.

Obama and Amanpour will discuss election denialism among Republican lawmakers, voting rights and the often-corrosive role of social media.

Amanpour will also speak with Obama about his position on how the fight to protect democracy around the world can be won amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

President Obama, do you agree with the proposition that America is an inherently irredeemable racist dictatorship? Isn’t it true that the 22nd Amendment was put in place specifically to thwart your attempts to teach white people not to hate?

Basking in the light of love

They waved to a handful of people waving back. They basked in the scattered cheers. They swept dramatically off the field smiling with painted faces and swooshing their blue and black habits.

Outside the gates, several thousand were protesting their existence. Throughout the Catholic community, thousands more showered them with scolding prayers and calls for boycotts.

They didn’t listen. They didn’t run. They didn’t cave. The Dodgers, who caved once, didn’t cave again.

In a four-minute ceremony that was the culmination of three weeks of controversy, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence activist organization was finally honored as the highlight of the Dodgers’ 10th annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night.

You could have heard a pin drop. You could have seen hearts soar.

“The stands were more empty than filled, but the mood was warm and happy,” said Sister Unity after a ceremony that was held earlier than most Dodgers pregame events. “People were happy, people were friendly, the sun was shining, the grass was green, and now we have baseball and hot dogs, it’s L.A. at its best.”

The ceremony was held much earlier than the Dodgers normally hold their pregame events because of what the Dodgers claim were safety reasons. There were extra police lining the stands. It didn’t matter. There was no fear. The Sisters weren’t going anywhere.

    Bear uprising

An Arizona man died Friday after he was attacked by a black bear that dragged him down an embankment before it was fatally shot by a neighbor, officials said.

Steven Jackson, 66, died in an unprovoked attack Friday morning in a wooded area of Yavapai County, the county sheriff’s office said.

Jackson, of Tucson, was sitting at a table having a coffee on a site where he was building a cabin when the adult male bear attacked him, the sheriff’s office said.

There was a struggle, and Jackson called out for help and neighbors responded, Sheriff David Rhodes said.

“They tried to get the bear to stop attacking him, there was honking horns, different things they were doing,” Rhodes said. “There was no success in stopping the attack.”

The bear dragged Jackson about 75 feet down an embankment before a neighbor arrived with a rifle and shot the animal to stop the attack, Rhodes said. By that time Jackson was dead.

Risk assessment is not part of the curriculum

This is hardly a scientific sampling, but a high school teacher in the Dallas area tells me that her students have two big worries.

One is getting shot to death. The other is seeing their neighborhood burn up due to climate change.

You don’t have to be young to fear gun violence, but the prospect that the planet may become unlivable is of special concern to those who plan to inhabit it for a good while.

And this brings us to a remarkable lawsuit initiated by a group of Montana residents between the ages of 5 and 22.

They charge that Montana’s fossil fuel fetish is destroying the state’s natural splendor, ruining cultural customs and creating an unhealthy environment.

These kids should be suing the people who fill their heads with these terroristic hobgoblin tales.

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

Suicides are the major contributing factor.

And for some strange reason, suicides among children started spiking in 2020. I can’t possibly understand why that is.

        • slumbrew

The only kid who committed suicide in my high school hung himself. We should ban rope.

  33. The Late P Brooks

We get why much of Montana has become a giant mining pit for coal. It is the fifth biggest producer of coal. But the world is transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy, and there’s no turning back.

    She claimed, without evidence.

    • rhywun

      “clean” energy

LOL these people are so shameless.

  34. The Late P Brooks

    Killer in your kitchen

When the blue flame fires up on a gas stove, there’s more than heat coming off the burner. Researchers at Stanford University found that among the pollutants emitted from stoves is benzene, which is linked to cancer.

Levels of benzene can reach higher than those found in secondhand tobacco smoke and the benzene pollution can spread throughout a home, according to the research.

The findings add to a growing body of scientific evidence showing that emissions within the home are more harmful than gas stove owners have been led to believe. And it comes as stoves have been dragged into the country’s ongoing culture wars.

Just look at the numbers. Chefs are dying like flies. Cooking with gas is more dangerous than an Elizabethan coal pit.

    • slumbrew

I should probably prioritize getting that hookup run to my kitchen. And buy that range even if I’m not quite ready.

      • Gustave Lytton

Me too. Wood stove install separate from fireplace/insert too. But that one might be already too late somewhat.

  35. The Late P Brooks

And for some strange reason, suicides among children started spiking in 2020. I can’t possibly understand why that is.

Despair over white supremacism and the death of democracy.

  36. The Late P Brooks

Medical experts are starting to take stands against cooking with gas. Nitrogen dioxide emissions have been the biggest concern, because they can trigger respiratory diseases, like asthma. The American Public Health Association has labeled gas cooking stoves “a public health concern,” and the American Medical Association warns that cooking with gas increases the risk of childhood asthma.

If NPR’s stable of medical experts released a study claiming eating dog shit off the sidewalk is bad for you I’d be skeptical.

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

Nobody wants to take away your gas stoves.

    • slumbrew

ISTR that the study they’re all relying on involved completely sealing the room with plastic and then sampling the air.

      Real-world conditions, IOW.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM

Don’t any of these people have exhaust hoods over their stoves?

Amazingly convenient timing for an outfit I have never heard of to cough up a position supportive of the current administration’s latest fantasy power grab.

  37. The Late P Brooks

Nobody wants to take away your gas stoves.

If they did, it would be for your own good, because you’re too dumb and feckless to be allowed to think for yourself.

    • slumbrew

“It’s Not Happening and It’s Good That It Is”

  38. The Late P Brooks

    Is that what killed Divine?

Without doubt. It couldn’t have been heart disease. John Waters should have been charged with manslaughter, at the very least.

  39. The Late P Brooks

But if you’re worried about pollution from cooking with a gas stove, there are some things you can do. The most obvious is to stop cooking with gas and switch to electric.

There are campaigns underway to encourage people to do that, both for health and climate reasons. The main ingredient in natural gas is methane, which leaks into the atmosphere all along the gas supply chain and is a potent greenhouse gas.

Vegans eat all their food raw, right? Switch to veganism. It’s healthier for you, anyway.

    • Count Potato

I’ve been producing methane all morning.

  40. Gustave Lytton

I’m not sure which is worse, Joe Biden or making a “news” story out of clipping Twitter responses.
